Debbie Rodriguez

By Mary Barr

I shook the grain and hollered in a high-pitch voice, “Comepoooonnneeeee!”

No response from the guy.

Did the wind carry my voice away?  So I walked out in the pasture to where he could see me, yelled again, “Comechippeeeeeeee!”

He picked up his head, mouth full of hay, but remained immobile. OH MY GOD, my horse must be sore from the two-day WDCTA clinic held March 17-18 at Rosebury Farm in Mukwanago WI with USDF “S”, FEI 3* and Eventing ‘R’ Judge Debbie Rodriquez (VA). He can’t move to get his grain! What have I done? I am a horrible horse owner! I called again and Chip trumpeted out a whinny in reply, then another, then picked up a canter, whinnied again, and rocketed in to his paddock. Maybe he is not a sore as I thought!

The dressage clinic was challenging and a good learning opportunity for all rider levels. Debbie had Chip and I marching along, using a metronome to keep the beat. We worked on moving forward and laterally in a correct manner, using my core in downward transitions, and checking my half-halt with the outside rein. ALL. THE. TIME.

My hamstring cramped up during the annual awards dinner, and my hips were talking to me all week. Maybe that was why I thought my 19-year-old riding partner was too sore to come in for his grain, but I was wrong, as evidenced by his exuberant entrance just now.

Why would I subject my body and my pocketbook to such strain? I could have stayed home and been cozy on the couch all weekend, instead of dragging my poor ol’ boy at the crack of dawn to an unknown barn and riding in front of (gulp) strangers who might judge me?  Because … I love the developing partnership with my horse and love the fact that even though I’ve had

him for his entire life, I am still learning how to ride this wonderful beast.

I also love to be in the companionship of those who also challenge themselves and their dancing partners. I watched other riders much more advanced improve in their move-ments. Observing them gave me a feeling of camaraderie and inspir-ation. Maybe, someday that could be me?!

Melinda DeLuca of the Kettle Moraine chapter and the staff at Rosebury Farm were

kind, generous and helpful hosts. The facility was WARM and spacious — I even was able to wash Chippy Saturday night. He stood stock still, enjoying the warm water and the overhead infrared heater.  I was overwhelmed by the generosity of the KM chapter members — from the coffee and homemade pound cake to the handwritten notes of our rides.

Now back to the reality of the early spring mud and cold after the clinic… I keep in my head the lessons and the feeling of my rides with Debbie. I have notes  from the helpful chapter members and video from my friend, Kris Blacklock, to review and continue learning from my lessons with Debbie. I have formed new friendships with the fellow horsemen I met throughout the weekend.

It may still be cold outside in South Central Wisconsin, but I have the promise of better rides ahead.

How is it that I am again writing my President’s message, and the weather is still completely crazy?

Today is Monday, April 16, the day after The Snow Storm of All Snow Storms. We were fortunate, as I live just south of Madison, because we only had about a half inch of ice and maybe three or four inches of snow.

I only lost power once, briefly. North and Central Wisconsin got obscene snow. And Midwest Horse Fair starts this week! Oh boy. Hopefully when you read this, you’ll nod your heads in remembrance, but will be enjoying 60- or 70-degree weather.

I understand there was some confusion regarding my April mes-sage and the awards banquet. I heard back from some members who thought I was speaking of the event in a derogatory manner towards the KM chapter. Let me be perfectly clear: NO, definitely not. Everything for banquet was phenomenal, as was the speaker.  What I was bemoaning was the

perceived lack of interest and attendance from our membership.  The State has asked Chapters to take turns planning and being fiscally responsible for the annual meeting and banquet each year, and KM graciously bailed out the SW Chapter, who’s turn it was to host. (SW begged out a year, due to hosting the William Fox-Pitt Symposium this past fall.)

But I digress.

My point is the chapters need our members to attend to help cover the costs associated with bringing in one (or more) speakers/clinicians.  Normally the annual meeting is an opportunity for a chapter to make some money for their treasury. The State does not wish the awards banquet to become a burden on the

chapters. I don’t know if I am being clear or further muddying the waters, but I want to be clear, the KM chapter hit a home run with the dinner and awards banquet! Great job, Melinda and crew!

This issue is our Awards issue. Once again, a huge congratulations to all the winners. Marie Caldwell, our awards chair, and Mary Hanneman did a great job ordering some phenomenal awards. I heard from several members they were so impressed with their awards. Great job everyone, and don’t forget to sign up for this year’s awards program!

President’s Message

Mary Hanneman Voted WDCTA Member of the Year

The WDCTA State Board chose Mary Hanneman as the 2017 Member of the Year for her dedication as the State Board President for many years, and her volunteerism for numerous WDCTA events. Congratulations, Mary!

Quick Winter Escape In mid-March, Marie Caldwell and I escaped to West Palm Beach for a long weekend, as guests of Janet and Michael Foy.

Marie had never been to the area before, so it was fun to show her around. On the first day, we spent visiting friends who were wintering in Florida. (We wished we were!) We visited private farms including those at White Fences and Little Ranches. Some friends of mine work with George Williams, so we stopped in to visit the farm in Little Ranches, where he has his winter training operation. Another friend trains with Oded Shimoni, so we stopped in to watch her lessons. What a stunning farm! It’s quite amazing how many multi-million dollar farms are in the Wellington-West Palm Beach-Loxahat-chee area.

One of the things Marie said she enjoyed the most was seeing so many people we knew in just a short drive. “It was fun to catch up with people we know from all over the country,” she said, “all gathered together in one place for a few months.”

Another favorite adventure for both of us was the Saturday evening Grand Prix jumping competition at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (just down the road from the location of the Global Dressage Festival). Margie Engel on Royce celebrated her birthday by taking first place in the evening’s $500,000 Rolex Grand Prix 5*.

Of course, what winter getaway would be complete without going to the beach? Michael was kind enough to drive us there — not that he didn’t enjoy sitting in the sand, enjoying the ocean breeze and the sounds of the waves. Later, the three of us enjoyed lunch at a restaurant with live music only a few steps from the beach. Ahhh, the good life … at least for a few days!

It was a great getaway, but we thought when we got back, there’d only be a week or two left of winter. Who would have guessed “winter” would last until nearly the end of April?

I hope by the time you get this newsletter, we are finally enjoying spring, and all the tulips and daffodils that dared to poke out of the soil in early April have survived and are treating us to their beautiful colors.

Canadian Cindy Ishoy rode her horse, Dynasty, at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, placing fourth as an individual and, with her fellow riders, earned a Team Bronze medal. Ishoy said this was her most memorable show because “it was an accumu-lation of years of work that all came together at the right time.”

She began training as a swimmer, but switched to horses in her teenage years. She started riding in Germany while her father was stationed there. She was thirteen at that time, and there was a riding club close to the base. “I asked my father if I could have lessons,” says Ishoy, “and that was the beginning of the end.”

She first represented Canada on the inter-national stage at the 1971 Pan American Games where she won a gold medal in the team dressage event and placed fourth individually. She then attended her first edition of the Olympic Games the following year, where she finished 26th in the individual dressage and sixth among 10 nations in the team event. She was selected for the 1976 Olympics, but did not compete, and was then slated to attend the Games in 1980, until Canada boycotted them.

Although she was offered an opportunity from the Soviets to pay her way to Moscow, she turned them down and had to wait until 1988 to get another chance to partici-pate in the Olympics.

She placed second individually at the 1988 World Cup, behind Christine Stuckelberger of Switzerland. The following year, Dynasty died of colic. At the 1992 Summer Olympics,

she placed 10th in the team event and 34th individually, and in 2004, she placed 9th with the Canadian team. In 2010, she was named Dres-sage Canada’s Owner of the Year.

Ishoy’s husband, Neil Ishoy, was also an equestrian who represented Canada at the 1980 Alternative Olympics in France and the 1982 World Championships. Together they

ran a dressage business in Ontario until Neil's death in 2015.

Ishoy’s mentors include some of dressage’s greats including Germany’s Willi Schultheis.

Ishoy coaches on a daily basis, and says she “takes great pleasure in teaching people who really want to learn, no matter what level they are.”

Two clinics have been scheduled at Caryn Vesperman’s Touchstone Farm in Brooklyn, WI.

WISCONSIN DRESSAGE & COMBINED TRAINING ASSOCIATION WAIVER, RELEASE, AND HOLD HARMLESS AGREEMENT

In consideration for my participation in the [Patti Becker Clinic - May 13, 2018 or Oct. 7, 2018] (hereafter, “the Activity”), I (the “Participant”) hereby acknowledge and voluntarily agree to the following (hereafter, “Agreement”). “Participation” includes, but is not limited to, riding, handling, instructing, or spectating.

1. Acknowledgment of Inherent Risks of Equine Activities. I acknowledge and understand that there are numerous inherentrisks of participating in equine activities, including, but not limited to: (a) the propensity of an equine or other animal, irrespective of its training, to behave in ways that may result in injury, harm, or death to persons on or around them (for example, jump, run, kick, buck, bolt, spin, rear, strike, or bite); (b) the unpredictability of an equine’s reaction to such things as sounds, sudden movements and unfamiliar objects, persons or other animals; (c) certain hazards such as conditions at or below the surface or ground, whether seen or unseen; (d) collisions with other animals or objects; (e) the potential for another person participating in an equine activity to act in a negligent manner that may contribute to injury to me, or to others, such as failing to maintain control over the equine or not acting within his or her ability; (f) the breakage or failure of tack or other equipment; and (g) the potential that an equine or other animal may cause injury or harm to the rider or to other persons or animals in the vicinity. I understand these risks and further acknowledge that I am not relying on the Wisconsin Dressage and Combined Training Association (hereafter, “WDCTA”) to list in this document all possible inherent risks of participating in equine activities or the Activity.

2. Acknowledgement that Participation in the Activity is Voluntary and Requires Personal Judgment. I acknowledge andunderstand that riding instruction by its nature requires that the instructor issue directions in the form of “commands.” I understand that while I should consider such commands, I must and will use my own judgment during my participation in the Activity. I understand that while participating in the Activity that: the commands and all activities engaged in as part of the instruction are entirely voluntary; that the instructor is not entitled to nor requests absolute obedience; that I may elect not to comply with any command or suggested act; and that I am expected to at all times be alert and thinking while participating in the Activity. I represent that both my equine and I have the requisite level of physical fitness and mental alertness to enable us to participate in the Activity, and are in good health and free from injury, illness or other defects which may impair our ability to engage in the Activity.

3. Waiver and Release of Liability. I understand and voluntarily accept the inherent risks of engaging in equine activities, including risks from my voluntary compliance or noncompliance with instructor commands associated with the Activity. I voluntarily agree to hold harmless, release, waive, and covenant not to sue Patti Becker], WDCTA, its officers, members, non-members that pay an auditing fee, Story Creek Farm, owners Rebecca Bebber-Wells or Kent W. Wells, as well as all other participants in the Activity (“Released Parties”) from any and all injuries, death, liability, or damage to person or property arising from my participation in the Activity, unless caused by Released Parties’ reckless, intentional or willful misconduct. Thus, I understand that this waiver and release is effective even if the injury, death, liability, or damage to person or property is caused or contributed to by the negligent action or inaction of Released Parties.

4. Equine Activity Liability Law. I acknowledge that I have read the State of Wisconsin’s notice regarding equine activities:

Notice: A person who is engaged for compensation in the rental of equines or equine equipment or tack or in the instruction of a person in the riding or driving of an equine or in being a passenger upon an equine is not liable for the injury or death of a person involved in equine activities resulting from the inherent risks of equine activities, as defined in section 895.481 (1) (e) of the Wisconsin Statutes.

5. Governing Law. This Agreement shall be construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the State of Wisconsin.Any controversy, dispute, or claim arising out of or related to this Agreement, shall be resolved exclusively through proceedings filed in the federal or state court in [Dane County, [WI. The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision or sentence of this Agreement shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision or sentence of this Agreement, which shall remain in full force and effect.

I have read this waiver, release, and hold harmless agreement, fully understand its terms, understand that I am assuming risks inherent to my participation, and agree to be fully bound by its terms. I understand that I am free to consult with any counsel about the terms of this agreement.
