The Easter season is here! If you’ve been in worship

lately, you’ve probably noticed me trying to emphasize

that Easter is not a single day in our church year – it’s a

new reality that began in Jesus’ resurrection and

continues for us today and every day. Jesus is still

risen! Because he is alive, we have hope of new and

eternal life ourselves. Perhaps the best way to celebrate

the Resurrection is to remember it and look for its signs

in our own everyday life.

Here are some of the Resurrection reminders I’ve

noticed lately:

The rosebushes and hydrangeas in my yard. After a

winter of neglect that left them looking deader than

dead, here they are sprouting up again! They are

full of green right now and soon will be blossoming

out in beautiful colors – a reminder of life that not

only endures through a period of death, but awaits

even greater fullness.

The medical symbol, the Rod of Asclepius, seen on

hospitals and ambulances everywhere. This staff

with a snake around it is a common sight, but did

you know its meaning comes

f r o m G r e c o - R o m a n

mythology? Asclepius, the

diety associated with medicine

and healing, would use this

staff to cure all sorts of

diseases, and even raise the

dead. In reality the serpent may

have become a resurrection symbol in ancient

Greece because of the way it sheds its skin (leaving

death behind) and for the known medicinal

properties of certain products derived from snakes.

The addiction recovery groups that meet in our

building. Perhaps it’s too obvious being right under

our noses, but virtually every day of the week there

are people gathering in our church to support each

other in leaving an addiction behind. Many will tell

you that getting sober is like waking up from the

dead – they are breaking free from sin and its

consequences that had held them captive so long. I

am thankful that in this place, people are finding

new life and the opportunity to move past their

mistakes.

So where have you seen signs of resurrection, in the

world around you or in your own life? I hope you’re on

the lookout and will let me know, as we celebrate this

incredible new reality together!

In Christ,

Pastor Dave

PRAYER CLOSET

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” -

Jeremiah 33:3, NIV

What if God does not demand prayer as much as gives prayer? What if God wants prayer

in order to satisfy us? What if prayer is a means of God nourishing, restoring, healing,

converting us? Suppose prayer is primarily allowing ourselves to be loved, addressed and

claimed by God. What if praying means opening ourselves to the gift of God’s own self

and presence? What if our part in prayer is primarily letting God be the giver? Suppose

prayer is not a duty but the opportunity to experience healing and transforming love.

DATE NIGHT!

A Ministry to Strengthen Marriages

Dates: Sat. May 13th

Sat., June 10th

We will have our second date night in our series for married couples! This is a

ministry targeted at younger couples, but open to all. If you and your spouse are

looking for new skills and insights to help make the most of your marriage, or even

just a chance to get away for a date together, this is for you! Couples will gather at

the church on a Saturday night and receive Biblical advice from experts in the

relationship field, and then have a chance to go out with their spouse and practice

what they've learned. IF YOU MISSED THE FIRST ONE, YOU ARE STILL

WELCOME TO ATTEND. You might go to dinner, to a fun activity, or even to

take care of some errands - our hope is simply that whatever you do, you do it

deliberately as a way to enjoy the gift of each other. Childcare (including pizza

dinner) is provided at the church from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. We will divide younger and

older children with age appropriate activities for each. If you would like to

participate in this program please sign up in the Commons, or call or email the

church office. We will be emailing an announcement and asking for reservations so

we can plan accordingly. There is no charge (but donations by participants for

childcare/pizza will be accepted). Strong marriages take time and intentional work

to develop. We hope and pray that this opportunity will help you and your spouse

along the way!

Dear Pastor Dave and Members of Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church,

On behalf of Camp Kum Ba Yah I would like to thank you for all the work the men of the church (and

These volunteers gave unselfishly of their time to pressure wash our large art shelter and to repair

and pressure wash fifteen of our aging picnic tables. Rodger Beeker was especially helpful in planning

and supervising their work. Thank you and your church so very much for your support of Camp Kum Ba

Yah.

Sunday School

May 2017 Current & Upcoming Class Offerings

You are welcome to join any of these classes at any time!

Even classes that indicate a topical study or series are structured in a way that members or visitors

can enjoy and benefit from an individual class.

Ricketts Class East Corridor Vic and Rita Fleet

The Rickett’s Class is studying I Timothy and will then continue to Titus and II Timothy. Join Vic

and Rita as they lead this class. Through a process of reading, reflection, discussion and creative

expression, both the first-time learner and the lifelong student are invited to an engaging, rewarding

encounter with Scripture that will greatly deepen their knowledge and understanding of the Bible.

Faith in Life Class East Corridor Dan & Heidi Lang

We all carry baggage that makes it hard for us to experience the “abundant life” Jesus promises.

Max Lucado, in his study of Psalm 23, asks, “Why don’t you try traveling light?” Beginning April

2, the Faith in Life class will discuss the many forms our burdens take and how God can help us let

go of them. Lucado’s book, Traveling Light: Releasing the Burdens You Were Never Intended to

Bear, will serve as the basis for our discussion.

“Searching for Sunday” (April 30; May 7) Betsy Smith & Kelly Ward

New York Times Bestselling author Rachel Evans embarks on a quest to find out which it really

means to be part of the church. Evans takes readers through a liturgical year with stories about

baptism, communion, confirmation, confession, marriage, vocation, and death that are funny,

heartbreaking and sharply honest. A memoir about making do and taking risks, about the messiness

of community and the power of grace, Searching for Sunday is about overcoming cynicism to find

hope and, somewhere in between, church.

LAST DAY OF PRESCHOOL

The last day of Preschool for the 2016-17 year is on Fri., May 26th. On

Thurs., May 25th beginning at 9 a.m. is Preschool graduation. Please use

caution when coming to church on that day. Watch for little people!

Congratulations to Erin Kane and teachers for another outstanding year!
