The Garden State is blessed with fertile soil and weather conditions well suited for the growing of a wide variety of fine grapes. And, throughout our State, some 45+ vineyards and wineries grow and offer the “fruits of the grape” for our enjoyment. This month’s main editorial feature introduces you to the GSWGA, its members and some upcoming festivals for you to experience. How long has it been since you visited Asbury Park. If more than a few years, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. The main downtown section of the area centers around Cookman Ave. A thriving mixture of retail shops, entertainment venues and dining experiences. A must visit is the relatively new Asbury Ale House. Owned & operated by the Gullace family, this establishment, noted as “the only Sports Bar in Asbury Park”, offers a great menu, a family-oriented, fun atmosphere, games, a friendly staff and lively entertainment. Read more in this issue’s Restaurant Profile. Enjoy the real sounds of the 80s & 90’s and long for the original performers? Don’t be depressed. Seek out The Counterfeiters! This band, billed as the “best 80s, 90s, etc. party band” performs and delivers a perfect copy of the original music and sounds just as they were first performed. Learn more

in this month’s Band Profile. As the saying goes, “April Showers bring May Flowers”. And flowers in May include hops …. and hops help make beer! Yes folks, a “hop’ is actually a flower. The variety of hops brewers add to their brews today help distinguish the tastes and balance of modern beers. Let “Bill the Brewer” tell you more in this month’s All That’s Beer feature. Time for our contributing writer Steve O to introduce you to a man from Matawan who now lives in Los Angeles and works full time as a professional comedian. Meet Sam Fedele, a stand-up comic who spends most of his time between Cruise ships, Vegas, Reno and other entertainment venues on the west coast. His original goal was to be “the next Elvis.” That not being achieved, he joined the Marines, afterwards chased money in various business ventures, and finally now considers himself “one of the lucky ones” doing exactly what he enjoys … making people laugh.

“The Only Sports Bar

in Asbury Park”#justsayaah

The Gullace family has brought something new and exciting to Asbury Park: the town’s one and only sports bar. The Asbury Ale House Sports Bar & Grill located on Cookman Avenue, offers a great menu, a family-oriented, fun atmosphere, games, a friendly staff and entertainment. And, according to Matt Gullace, who co-owns the family-owned and operated business with his brothers Frank Jr. and Chris, the Asbury Ale House is the only sports bar in Asbury Park. The sports bar opened in October 2015. “We took the sports bar theme and created a family atmosphere with good, comfort food, games, entertainment and specials 7 days a week,” he said. “We offer a fun atmosphere, a good menu, games, good quality food, daily specials, Happy Hour and entertainment. Our games are fun for kids and adults. No other restaurant around here offers arcade games and other games to the extent we do, with the exception of maybe a few on the boardwalk.”

“We take pride in getting to know our customers very well,” Gullace said. “We know their names, their drinks, what they eat. Our dad taught us that getting to know our customers and making sure they have a great experience here is one way to ensure they will come back.” Gullace’s dad, Frank Sr. owned and operated bars in Jersey City for over 30 years and taught his sons the business. Frank Gullace Jr. opened Shore House Bar & Grill, Point Pleasant 7 years ago with the help of his father. Matt and Chris Gullace also became a part of the business. “After working together for five years, we know

the business like the backs of our hands,” Gullace said. Asbury Ale House features 57 beers on tap with monthly rotation, along with craft beers, including 12 of New Jersey’s most popular local brews.

The eatery provides 50 TVs to view sports games and events, including UFC fighting with no cover charge. The restaurant accommodates 225 guests indoors and 80 additional guests in the outdoor dining area. Games are available for adults and children and include bar pong, darts, shuffleboard, and bingo, along with air hockey, Trivia, basketball shooting games, and arcade games, such as Buck Hunt and golf. Asbury Ale House welcomes children to enjoy the food, play games and enjoy the fun. “We take pride in the fact that this is not just a bar,” Gullace said, adding, “We have a kid’s menu that offers a soft drink, food item and ice cream every day.” The main menu is extensive and includes signature dishes, such as “Drunken Chicken,” Ale House Burger, tuna steak, and tempting spicy Buffalo wings, also including the signature Ale House Wings with a special sauce created by the family. The restaurant offers a VIP club where for $35 you receive a 23 oz. beer mug stored in the locker of your choice. The mug gets you 23 oz. of beer for the price of a 16 oz. mug. Try the 57 different beers on tap to win a free Asbury Ale House hoodie and

get your picture on the Wall of Fame.Stop in for their $12 lunch combo specials Monday through Friday from 11a.m. – 4 p.m. which includes a burger or sandwich, cup of soup, domestic draft or glass of house wine. Enjoy Happy Hour Monday through Friday 4 p.m. -7 p.m. where $2 domestic drafts, $3 wine by the glass or $4 mixed drinks are on tap.

Daily specials are also on tap: Monday offers ½ price “Mac and Cheese Bowls,” and $3 Coronas and Corona Lights from 7 p.m. to close. Monday night Shuffleboard League and Speed Bingo happen at 8 p.m.

Tuesday offers Mix & Match apps, $2 domestic drafts $3 NJ drafts and Bar Pong hosted by Pong Kings. 7 p.m. to close.

Wednesday offers “2-4-1” burgers and $3 Miller High Life bottles. It’s also Ladies Night where ladies drink for Happy Hour prices all night long.

Wednesday is also Trivia Night with Ryan Maher.

Thursdays offer 2-4-1 “Drunken Chicken” entrée or sandwich.

Fridays indulge in $3 Miller Lite bottles and $5 Stoli vodka drinks from 7 p.m. to close. Enjoy free Pop-Shop Photobooth which begins at 10 p.m.

Enjoy the Breakfast of Champions on Sundays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and get a beverage with breakfast. Build-Your-Own Bloody Mary, Mimosa or Screwdriver. Sunday features $2 Coors Light Pints and $3 Coors Light bottles. Combine brunch with “Bingo with BJ” at 1 p.m.

Sunday night is Industry Night where restaurant industry workers may indulge in half price apps and Happy Hour prices all night long.

Asbury Ale House will also be happy to cater your private parties. “We take pride in our business and want to make sure we give proper care to everyone who walks in so they want to come back,” Gullace said. “We want to give our customers the best experience. This is very important to us.” Gullace said the family created a theme that would literally draw audiences from all ages, not wanting to target one audience. “There is something for everyone here,” he said.

Counterfeit is an imitation intended to be passed off as genuine.

There is nothing fake about this talented New Jersey band. The Counterfeiters are billed as “the best 80s, 90s, etc. party band” and that’s exactly what they do. They are not there to deceive their audience in believing that they are the original musicians, but to bring a perfect copy of the music from wildly popular songs from the 1980’s onward.

So who are these Counterfeiters? The band is comprised of David Fagin, vocals/guitar, Gina Rubertone, guitar/vocals, Mike Tedesco, keys/vocals, Dave Shapiro, bass, and Larry Nelson, drums. They have been playing together for over four years. Dave Fagin was a member of the band, The Rosenbergs and had toured with Echo and The Bunnymen, opened for No Doubt, Duran Duran, and The Strokes. Currently, you can also see Dave Shapiro in his acoustic side project called Crazy Ivan.

At a Counterfeiter show, a set might include anything from Cheap Trick, The Stray Cats, The Cure, The Goo Goo Dolls, The Knack, The Ramones, The Bee Gees, Bob Marley, or even The Sugar Hill Gang. “It gets pretty diverse. One of the things we like to do is to break up the sets a bit, style-wise” Dave Fagin goes on to say, “the first set might be predominantly 80s pop stuff, the second may consist of dance hits from the 70s to today, and by the end of the night it’s mainly 90s rockers like Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, etc.”. They avoid the over played pop songs that air on the radio all day, every day. “You can hear those songs 80 times a day as it is, not to mention, 90% of bands out there already do it.”

There are always personal favorites while playing, for David they are “I Want You To Want Me”, “Born To Run”, “Slide,” “End of the World As We Know It” “Shake It Off” and “Kiss (Prince)” simply because it’s so much fun to watch the crowd get into them.

Not your typical nightclub band, the Counterfeiters set out to musically perform a perfect copy of the songs that are covered. “What sets us apart from the other bands out there is we work really hard to sound as close to the artist we’re covering as possible.” “We love seeing people standing there with their mouths open, trying to figure out how we manage to sound like Springsteen one minute, The Outfield the next, and Erasure the next.” They pride themselves on being a totally “self-contained” act. “What you see is what you get. Overall, I think that’s

why people respond so positively to us. We put on a show that resembles a high energy original rock band, but we’re playing songs everyone already knows and loves.”

Where can you spot a Counterfeit? They perform all over the tri-state area. You can find them at places like The Downtown, Moore’s Tavern, Water Street, Willie Mc Brides, The Shannon Rose, and midnight shows at The Red Lion in NYC. “Our favorite venue to play by far is The Downtown in Red Bank. They have a fantastic stage and sound system and the place gets packed. When you’re used to bringing your own sound to gigs, and most times setting up on the floor, it’s quite the luxury to not only play places that have their own sound/stage, but really care to make it the best experience for their bands.”

When asked about what they hope the audience takes with them after seeing their show, David Fagin said, “we love doing what we do and love that they love it, too.”

by Bill “The Brewer”

Once upon a time, before beer was beer, it was called gruit. Gruit was like the beer we know today but made with different herbs, flowers, and spices. This was a sad time, the Dark Ages of brew. The gruit “beer” would spoil quickly and it didn’t really taste that good. (I know because I actually brewed some from a historic recipe I came across.) Then something miraculous happened. Brewers started adding hops to their brews and the modern day beer was born. Whether it was an accident or experiment it still a little unclear, but the hops proved to be an amazing improvement to the drink of choice. The beer tasted more balanced, was more resistant to infection during fermentation and had a much longer shelf life. So what is a hop anyway? Well, simply put a hop is a flower. Hops grow in long vines, properly called bines. The bines have off-shoots where clumps of the cone shaped flowers grow. Inside the cone of the hop is a sticky, yellow, fragrant resin called lupulin. The lupulin is primarily what the brewer is after. There are also essential oils found in hops which contribute to taste and aroma, and

antibacterial elements that help stabilize the beer and help prevent spoilage. Craft beer is booming and hops are now widely popular as well. There are hundreds of different types of hops and new hybrid strains of hops are popping up every day. Each variety of hop has its own unique flavor, kind of like grapes in wine. A chardonnay grape will usually taste similar to other chardonnays, with subtle flavor differences depending on where it was grown. Hops varietals are the same.

Hops can be separated into a few different categories. There are some hops that lend well to bittering. These are added to the beginning of the boil when making beer. The other type is flavoring or

aroma hops. These are added at the end of the boil, and as the name suggests they add most of the taste and smell of hops to the brew. Flavor and aroma hops can be further broken down into a few types as well. There are hops that are very citrus like and others that are spicy. Some hops

are more floral and others are tannic and earthy.

Next time you’re at the bar, try a few different IPAs (the most hoppy of the beers) and see if you can pick out what type of hops they are using. I’d love to hear what you think. You can catch me on Twitter @TheBrewerBill. Cheers!

The Garden State Wine Growers Association is a coalition of 42 member wineries across the state of New Jersey. Founded in 1984, the association has driven exponential growth through wine education initiatives, cooperative marketing campaigns, and a slate of annual events dedicated to taking our wines across New Jersey, and encouraging enthusiasts to visit our wineries. The association also serves

as an educational and informational resource for current and prospective grape growers, with the overarching goal of improving the quality and quantity of grapes and wine being produced in New Jersey. This is accomplished in part by working closely with the Rutgers Agricultural Experimentation Station network throughout the state, and the newly formed Rutgers Wine

Grape Resource Center, chaired by Dr. Dan Ward. The association forges and maintains positive relationships with state and local government entities, and advocates on all levels for wine grape industry interests. The association also serves as a resource to those seeking assistance in navigating governmental compliance issues during the winery licensing and permitting process.”

CAGNEY “CAGNEY’s” new Broadway appearance with the same Off-Broadway cast, director and choreographer, is a slicker, fuller production that should send Westside Theatre audiences out with big smiles. Under Bill Castellino’s direction, Robert Creighton gives a much stronger, more empathetic performance and the whole show moves at a swift and steady pace. The star wrote just four of the score’s selections, with the rest penned by Christopher McGovern. Their work is capable and catchy, but the musical climaxes are reserved for the George M. Cohan tunes that wrap up each act and are featured in the second half ’s most memorable dance sequence. Bookending the story with scenes depicting the evening in 1978 when Cagney accepted the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, Peter

A Review

Colley’s book covers a lot of years, but concentrates on the character’s artistic ambitions. After losing John Barrymore to a New York production of HAMLET, movie mogul Jack Warner tells one of his flunkies to sign up some unknown kid who just got great reviews on Broadway. Dismayed to find out the kid is a short, streetwise punk instead of a handsome leading man, he sticks him in a supporting role in a low-budget gangster movie. But when Cagney proves to have an irresistible charisma playing the tough guy, he’s graduated to the lead. When THE PUBLIC ENEMY proves a hit, Warner orders his writers to start cranking out identical vehicles for his new star. YANKEE DOODLE DANDY gives the actor a chance to show off other talents, but when it

becomes apparent that Cagney will never be given the opportunity to stretch artistically under Warner and do uplifting films that will inspire people, he forms his own production company. Though his mother, brother and wife appear as characters, the actor’s personal life is barely touched upon, though his left-leaning politics and professional friendship with Bob Hope provide some textures. Thus, Cagney isn’t crowded with plot, as some bio-musicals tend to be, but it doesn’t tell you much about the man either. Think of it as more of an entertaining salute that really shifts into high gear whenever choreographer Joshua Bergasse has the cast flashing their tap shoes, which occurs more

frequently as the evening progresses. Creighton sings with gusto, dances with even more and is an extremely likeable presence, suggesting the guts and determination that attracted Depression-era audiences to Cagney’s gritty portrayals. His performance is most emotionally effective in the second act, when the star makes a reluctant return to Warner to make WHITE HEAT and his experience and developed acting skills allow him to elevate his familiar performance into one of high art. And while Cagney isn’t high art, it’s peppy, sincere and a heck of a lot of fun.

Sam FedeleVenues-NJ: Matawan, New Jersey, circa 1960, and now a Los Angeles based professional comedian. Cruise ships, Vegas, Reno, C’mon, HOW?! I mean, I know you were class clown but fill us in. How do you get from Matawan to where you are today?

Sam Fedele: I never wanted to be a comedian; I wanted to be the next Elvis. That dream died young and I joined the Marines. After that I tried a stint in the coin room at a hotel in Vegas and a couple of other crappy jobs until I ended up owning a blueprint company in Newport Beach for 12 years. I always thought lots of money was the goal but after making it and being miserable I knew it was time for something else. I decided to go to school and become a lawyer. I saw a comedy class at the local college and took it. I decided if I can make people laugh I could certainly persuade a jury. I came out first in the class, took the advanced class and came out first in that as well. I was immediately offered paid gigs and figured “heck this is way easier than going back to school so I jumped in with both feet. My first full year as a comic I went from making 6 figures to making four thousand dollars, the next year I made ten thousand so it was tough sledding at first but it’s certainly paid off. I’m one of the lucky ones, I get paid to do something that I would do for free and I make people happy doing it, what more could you ask from a career? Ok I’d rather be catching for the Yankees but until they ask…

V-NJ: When I was in the Marine Corps I used to do open mike’s whenever I could, when did you first decide to try it?

SF: I was caught imitating a DI in boot camp and everyone was laughing, the other DI caught me and made me do it for all the other squads DI’s. It was awful 12 grown men standing there with their

arms folded and NOT laughing once, now its 1200 people sitting with their arms folded and not laughing once). I guess that was the first time I ever “went up” as we call it. The first real time I went up was 12 years later at The Laugh Stop in Newport Beach Ca. and I haven’t looked back since.

V-NJ: A quick glance at your schedule and it’s obvious you spend a lot of time on the road. How does that affect family life, I mean it’s gotta be tough sometimes, right?

SF: It was very tough in the beginning when my girls were young, I missed soccer games and drill events but made up for it by being 100 percent locked in when I was home. I never really sat around watching TV. I was always on the track running with the girls or playing with them so we are all really tight now. The girls liked my job and I shared it with them as often as I could, taking them to Vegas hanging by the pools all day, stuff like that.

V-NJ: What do you have coming up and when

are you gonna be back east so we can see you here in Jersey?

SF: I do quite a few cruise ship gigs and I just finished The Laugh Factory in Reno and I’m heading back to Vegas 4 more times this year, so I’m really looking forward to that. I’m VERY excited to be heading back to Iraq and Kuwait this June. I’ve performed for the troops over there 3 or 4 times already and it’s always a treat. They are the most appreciative audiences and it’s always a blast. As far as Jersey, I’d LOVE to do a charity benefit for The Maximum Hope Foundation but it’s difficult finding a venue. I approached The Stress Factory but we were unable to match up on dates so I need to find

somewhere that can accommodate 3 or 4 hundred people for an evening, any ideas? :):):)

About St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital: Unsure of his life’s direction, a young Danny Thomas sought guidance from St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes. If the saint would point to the path he should take, Danny vowed to build a shrine in his name. Success followed Danny’s plea and soon after, the legendary entertainer set about fulfilling his vow to St. Jude. The result was St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay. We’ve spent more than half a century finding cures and saving children, and our groundbreaking research has helped push the survival rate for childhood cancer from less than 20% in 1962 to more than 80% today.

APATHYA lack of interest or concern; indifference.

Whether it be in personal life or business life, this trait can lead to disaster or at least hold back opportunity and progress. In the field of hospitality, service and responsibility are essential to growing a profitable business. If a restaurant chef (or cook) feels that his food preparation is “the best” with no regard to the custom’s taste or feelings, or if a bartender is inattentive to his or her customers, the results will be the loss of a guest, a bad rep for the venue and ultimately, a negative impact on the bottom line.

If your employees spend their time “watching the clock,” with little or no regard to the day-to-day operations of the business and a lack of pride in their jobs and their place of work, customers will take note and eventually not return. You can present a beautiful dining area & a comfortable bar, but if the rest rooms are no inspected hourly and are dirty & untidy when a customer enters, that customer will not come back. In business, you have to be aware of your surroundings; know what’s going on in your world and how the actions of others are affecting you. And in your personal life, this awareness is equally important, if not more so. Know how the actions of others affect or will affect you and your family and take the necessary steps to make things better.

And, with that said ……
