Commodore’s Comments ..... Comm. Steve France 2016 Boating Season – By golly, it’s here! Our 2016 sailing season begins. After a productive work day, our club and grounds look great and we’re ready to see the basin fill up with sailboats and for all the summertime adventures on the water and in the club. The clubhouse and restrooms get a thorough cleaning weekly and we all can help keep the whole premises looking shipshape between cleanings by doing a little policing after ourselves. Our first race takes place Wednesday evening for PHRF and JAM, May 18 and our Sunday morning fun race series debuts on May 29. This is a real opportunity for those who can’t make the Wednesday evening races to gather family and friends for a low key race in the bay on weekends. Thanks to everyone who came out on our spring workday to help get our Club ready for the summer. The next board meeting of the Sandusky Sailing Club will be Tuesday, May 10 at 7:00pm. Meetings are open to all members in good standing. If you have any issues that need attention, please contact me at [email protected], or any board member. Vice Vice Baby!! .............. VC Wendy Kaufman Yearbook – The 2016 yearbook is almost ready for publishing. Thanks to those who have assisted, especially PC Eric Winkel and Comm. Steve France. If all goes well, you will see them mid to late May. Spring Work Day – Thanks to all those who could make it even though the weather was not expected to be very warm. Please remember that Tim and I will have lists of small and large projects that will still need to be taken care of, so if you are at the club feeling ambitious, (or even a little guilty) please call or ask and one of us can make some suggestions of tasks that you could help with. Thanks again. Please contact me with any and all brilliant ideas that you have and I will try to incorporate them. RC Wendy Kaufman 419-656-9566 (cell) or email me at [email protected]. The View from the Rear .......... RC Mark Gross Galley Committee – I am putting out a call for any members who are willing to serve on a new Galley Committee. The committee will work with the Rear Commodore and Club Manager to ensure that the galley is stocked with all necessary items, including food, paper and plastic products, and cleaning products, and to make sure we have everything we need for Wednesday night racing. This will be especially helpful during the summer, when we go through a lot of stock for Wednesday nights racing and the many other events that take place at SSC. in the direction of Kingsville. John is working on a location for our group dinner, possible at O’Sarracino’s – it was a hit last year. Our return sail is on Sunday. Customs re-entry is at Cedar Point. Just a reminder: Passports are required for all skippers and crew members. If your boat is 30’ or more, you will be required to have a Private Vessel Decal in order to re-enter the States. See more info at this link www.cbp.gov If you would like to reserve a dock, please email Sheryl at [email protected] Include the following information: First and Last Name, Boat Name, LOA, Beam, Street Address, City, State, Zip, Phone, Email, Arrival and/or Departure Date if different than SSC, Number of Crew, Number of people for wine tour, and Number of people for dinner. Sheryl needs your information by may 20, 2016 – marina requires 3 weeks notice to reserve your dock!Fleet Communications – There will be a lot going on at SSC this summer. In an effort to communicate the most up-to-date information about cruising activities, we are taking a three-pronged approach. You can get information anytime by visiting our www.sanduskysailingclub.com website. A second source is Cruise News emails and texts. If you don’t recall getting emails, check your member profile and make sure cruising is in your list of fleets. You opt-in to get text messages by sending a ssccruisers message to 84483. And finally, come down to the club and read the posted signs and notices. If the weather is at all nice, there will be a group meeting under the pavilion on Friday and Saturday evenings to discuss where to sail next. Send your articles for publication or questions to [email protected].

Junior Race Team ...................Stephanie WallsSpaghetti Fundraiser – The Junior Race Team extends a heartfelt thanks to the many people who supported this fundraiser! For the second year, the Sandusky Yacht Club provided ample space and delicious food to support this joint venture between our two clubs. In an unexpected twist, the day of the fundraiser was quite snowy for April, but a few snowflakes weren’t enough to deter this hardy group of sailors! The dinner was a success, and the funds will be used to cover expenses during the upcoming season. If you would still like to support the race team with a donation, it’s not too late! Please contact Kristin Koliha ([email protected]) for information. Thanks again for supporting the next generation of sailors!2016 Season – In the next few weeks, you will begin seeing activity once again at the junior barn! The kids are excited to start unpacking the boats and gear to prepare for the first regatta on June 4 hosted by the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club. Once the barn is open for the season, feel free to stop by and say hi to the junior sailors and their parents, most of whom are sailors as well!SSC to host regatta – Our club is scheduled to host a junior regatta in the Traveler Series this year on June 18. Please look for forthcoming information about this exciting event!

Learn to SailPlans are well underway for a fantastic Learn to Sail program this summer. We are eager to welcome many community student groups to our sailing lessons including: kids from the Nehemiah center and the YMCA. A U.S. Sailing Level 1 course is scheduled for June 6-9 and a Level 2 Coaching course following on June 11 and 12. Both classes will be taught by our incoming Learn to Sail Director, Rick Pinnone, who is an Instructor Trainer for US Sailing. Check the US Sailing website for more information and registration.

Website Committee ........................ Matt [email protected] is the newest address to add to your contacts when requesting updates to the SSC website or have questions/issues with the site. The SSC Board created the Website Committee. It is made up of Mark Swabley, Matt Bedee, PC Eric Winkel and PC Mike Fishbaugh. Our goal for 2016 is to more fully integrate the website with club operations and used to keep members up to date with news and events. Keeping members up to date via the website requires a team effort. When sending updates for the website, make sure you send them to [email protected] and include the following information in the subject line: SSC Website-[EVENT NAME]-[DATE OF EVENT]. For example: SSC Website - Sandusky Junior Race Team Spaghetti Dinner and Fundraiser - April 9, 2016. Once you send the email, one of the Website Committee members will respond that the request was received and when it will be addressed. If you do not get a response within 48 hours, do not assume that it was received and has been addressed. We will get updates or changes to the website done within seven days of the request being sent to [email protected]. The other part of the team work is to make sure that requests are sent in a timely manner. Most events require planning to start several months out, so include updating the website/calendar as part of your event planning activities. The website is a very important tool for sharing information with current members and perspective members. All of us look forward to engaging members more via the website. Each month’s Cross Bearings will include an article to help members get more familiar with using the website or explain a feature users may not be familiar with.
