Oh Ethiopianism! A Short Historical Fiction on What It Means to be an Ethiopian

Note: Thanks to the ethno-fascist regime that is ruining Ethiopia today, the concept of Ethiopianism is being eroded slowly but surely day by day. During its glorious days, Ethiopianism literally stands for freedom. For most of the African world and all black people, the word Ethiopia meant freedom especially for the reggaes in Jamaica.

    Ethiopia=Freedom was the equation.

Ethiopia was the first known black African country recorded in history that whipped the white Italian army. Not any more. That is history and not a present reality. That was too many wases as you can imagine. Ethiopia is now known not for its freedom but for its famine and poverty. For heaven sakes, how low have we fallen? We have transformed from glory

to shame and from bravery to cowardice. What happened to us? Who did this to us? Who is responsible for Ethiopia gradually moving towards a scary and an unknown future? How can we return Ethiopia to its former glory and save this great land and people from an impending destruction?

We cant go without a fight. One thing that we can do is reintroduce the former glory to the generation that may

have forgotten its history. And the other critical work is to teach the new and the young generation about their glorious past. And open a discussion along the lines of what the youth can do to restore Ethiopia back to its greatness.

One area we can work on is literature. To serve this purpose, there is a historical fiction book written entitled, Oh Ethiopianism!.

I have received calls from buyers complaining about finding out that their home or condominium had less square footage than was represented on their original MLS listing. My immediate thought was "did the

home shrink after closing?" In other words, if the square footage was really important to you, why didn't you measure it yourself before you bought the home? Here are 5 lessons to remember about square footage:

    1. When you buy from builder plans, nothing is guaranteed Some builders attach plans with square footage to their agreements, other don't. Even if the plan is attached, The Tarion Warranty Programme permits registered builders to make errors up to 2% and unfortunately, there are no penalties if the error exceeds 2%. While buyers can request a price adjustment if the error exceeds 2%, in my experience, most builders will not agree with this. In addition, there is confusion as to whether the measurements are just for interior living space or whether it goes to the exterior walls, and it may not account for pillars or other obstructions inside the unit. So even if you are relying on builder plans when figuring out the square footage, there may be errors in them.

    2. Buyers may be able to sue if the difference is substantial The case law has gone both ways as to whether a buyer can successfully sue if they find that the seller misrepresented the square footage and the difference was substantial, say over 10%. In some cases the listing brokerage was held responsible for not properly verifying the information. But it is not guaranteed.

    3. Will disclaimer clauses protect sellers and real estate salespeople

A disclaimer clause will likely protect a seller from liability, unless they knew the information was false and gave it out anyways. However, a real estate salesperson is required to do their due diligence. That does not mean that you can just copy the square footage from an expired listing. If you do not do any due diligence, you may still have violated the Real Estate Council of Ontario Code of Ethics, even with a disclaimer clause.

    4. If you are acting for the buyer, ask how the seller came up with the square footage While buyer salesperson can normally rely on a listing salesperson to conduct due diligence, it is a good idea to always ask where the number for the square footage came from. Was it on plans, through MPAC or just from a prior MLS listing when they bought in the first place? In addition, if you see a disclaimer clause, explain this to the buyer and consider having the property measured by the buyer themselves for verification.

    5. If you are not sure, just measure it yourself It is easy to be fooled when it comes to square footage. Professional home stagers are experts at making rooms appear larger than they are by the furniture that is used. If you are acting for a seller, discuss with the seller the advantages of hiring a professional to verify the square footage before putting the home on the market. If you are acting for a buyer, ask them if the square footage is important to them, and if necessary, take the time to do some of the measurements with the buyer to make sure the area is close to what is being represented. By asking the right questions both before listing and during the offer negotiations, there should be no complaints or claims about square footage after closing.

Sylvia Pankhurst: Citizen of the World Her Struggle against Colonial Aggression in Ethiopia

Emperor Haile Selassie, Sylvia E. PankhurstAnd the Ethiopian Independence

    By Berihun Assfaw (Toronto, Canada)

    Ato Berihun Assefaw

Continued from the previous issue When Emperor Haile Selassie arrived in London morally and physically defeated, it was Sylvia who mobilized the big British crowd and greeted him at the station. For Sylvia, ever the champion of the underdog, the Emperor became her personal responsibility. She told him that She was not helping him because he was an Emperor, but because his cause was just. The most important thing for her was the future of the people he represented and consequently the future of Africa and that part of the world under colonization. The British Government and the King wanted Haile Selassie to be in London acting not as a head of state, but as a refugee. Their concern was not Ethiopia or Haile Selassie but Mussolini. They didnt want to anger Mussolini by allowing Haile Sellasie to act as a head of state. In fact his presence in Britain was an embarrassment and they forced him to leave London and stay in the small town of Bath. In order to keeps the Ethiopian independence burning, Sylvia wrote numerous articles in her paper as well as in other national papers like The Manchester Guardian, The Times, The Daily Mail and The Chronicle. Sylvias newspaper, by keeping the British public well informed and up-to-date, succeeded in pressuring the British politicians. She was also in fierce battle with the British papers the Daily Mail, the Observer, and the Morning Post, which were supporting the fascist invasion of Ethiopia.

Pankhurst, like most of Ethiopians and European Military experts, was not happy when the Emperor fled to Europe leaving his country leaderless. She thought he would have stayed in the country and battled the Italians. There was a time when Emperor Haile Selassie was morally and financially bankrupt. At that terrible time in his life it was Sylvia Pankhurst, and the friends of Ethiopia that she organized, who supported him. After the British recognition of the Italian conquest of Ethiopia in 1938, the hope of the Emperor came to an end. At that juncture the financially and morally broken Emperor tried to negotiate with Mussolini through different persons making Sylvia Pankhurst unhappy. She was totally against it. Deep in her heart she most likely considered it as a betrayal of Ethiopia. Sylvia Pankhurst condemned the policy of the British government when Mr. Nevill Chamberlain recognized the King of Italy as Emperor of Ethiopia. Because of this knife in the back work of the British, Sylvia and her friends doubled their campaign against the British government. Because of her principled stand against colonialism and fascism, Sylvia was insulted and she was hit by a stone at an anti-fascists rally on Oct.4, 1936. It was Sylvia that was threatened by the fascists in Britain because of her campaign against the inhumane massacre of the Ethiopian people, by Marshall Peitro Badolgio and General Rudolf Graziani, Mussolinis commanders in Ethiopia. Finally, it was Sylvias strong

campaign that pressured the British government, under Winston Churchill, to recognize the independence of Ethiopia, and accept her as an equal partner against Hitler and Mussolini in 1941. She almost forced the British government to play the Ethiopian National Anthem along with other Allied Nations Anthems on BBC. It was because of Sylvia and her friends campaign that Mr. Winston Churchill, whom she had known as a political adversary since the turn of the century, was forced to send Emperor Haile Selassie to Sudan and later to Ethiopia, as one of the leaders of allied forces, to fight the remaining Italian forces that were isolated in few towns and cities. In 1905, when Winston Churchill was campaigning to be a Liberal MP, there was

a confrontation between him and the young Sylvia Pankhurst. He physically pushed her from where she was questioning him about his support of womens right to votes? Because the public forced him to answer her question he gave a negative answer about womens votes in Britain. She held a low opinion of him throughout her life, most especially his support of Mussolini and fascism, against Ethiopia, was contemptible to her. The only time they agreed politically was when he came to the opinion that fascism was a danger to the world, and later became antiHitler-Mussolini Axis. Of course, he was about 20 years late in recognizing the dangers of fascism.

    Samuel Getachew

In the 2014 municipal election, I should have voted for Olivia Chow. I voted for John Tory and that was a mistake. I saw in Tory a moderate and inclusive public servant. I was blinded by the widespread support he held from citizens and institutions I respect and admire John Crombie, David Peterson, Bill Davis, Zanana Akande, the Toronto Star editorial among many others. I was not just a supporter of his but I was also his biggest cheerleaders. Citizens like me and many others made him look smart, progressive and moderate. Sadly, he is not. Essentially, we became the human face of a man whose ideals are wrong for Toronto and Torontonians. We should have known better. Like a young Jean Chrtien, who in 1958 went to Ottawa as a Lester B. Pearson delegate yet supported Paul Martin Sr. out of pity, I was drawn to Tory for that very same reason at the beginning. I did not study his perspectives well and embraced him rather quickly. The late David Pecaut believed in him and that meant something for me. Less than a year after he became our mayor, he has disappointed me a great deal. He has endorsed carding, rejected an idea to have new immigrants participate in our local democracy and his idea of engaging our young people by way of Starbucks employment is a farce at best. I should have followed my instinct and voted for Olivia Chow. Chow has always been a proven fighter for better ideals in our society and reflects the more perfect Canadian citizenship to us all. She supports the idea of allowing new immigrants to vote, does not support racial profiling and is a noted youth advocate as an elected official and private citizen. Tory is an elitist and he reflects the rejected ideals of the old Reform Party. Chow lost because of people like me. I should have known better. I would like to publicly apologize to Olivia Chow. Last night at Ryerson University, Mayor Tory once again broke the trust we placed on him and rejected the idea of allowing landed immigrants and other non-citizens the right to vote in our municipal elections -- a practice many Canadian citizens take for granted. "I would not support the extension of the vote to people who are not citizens of Canada," he said. The mayors of

Mark Saunders Has a Duty to End Toronto's Racist Carding Policy

The first time I met Saunders was at an AGM hosted by the Black Business & Professional Association last year. I was a candidate to be President of the national organization. I had a vision to take the organization to an advocacy route and I received significant support when I announced my candidacy via the Toronto Star. The incumbent wanted to maintain the status quo and have the organization continue to be an award-granting institution. I sold lots of membership and I was confident. At the last moment, I was made aware that I would not be allowed to stand as a candidate since I was new to the organization. I was disappointed and challenged the decision openly but ultimately, I failed to convince the board to allow me to run. The President was acclaimed. I felt rejected, heartbroken and disappointed. I felt alone. Mark Saunders came, sat next to me and encouraged me to continue to be active in the community. He made me feel like the issue at hand was more powerful than my own ambition. He shared with me words of wisdom, handed me his business card, hugged me and departed. That was such a fulfilling gesture coming from someone significant. He did not have to do that and he did. That made such a profound impression on me. When his appointment as Toronto's top cop became public on Monday, he reflected how "being black is fantastic," though "it does not give him superpowers" and that if we "are expecting that all of a sudden, the earth will open up and miracles will happen, that's not going to happen." Sure, but it still is a significant milestone for him and the black community. As the Toronto Star editorial reflected, "his rise is a testament to what can be accomplished through dedication, inspiration and hard work." Isn't that what the Canadian dream is all about? Saunders is a pioneer and has travelled a road less travelled by someone of his colour, from becoming the first black to lead the homicide unit to being the first black sergeant with the elite Emergency Task Force unit. To the average black citizen, who is interested in policing as a career, his is a reminder that the ultimate destination is

friendlier now because of him. To him, I hope the voice of the average citizen will be as important as the privileged. I hope, he knows, in our Toronto society, no black person is safe, from racial discrimination and that the new carding policy -- the practice of stopping, questioning and documenting civilians disproportionately brown and black men -- he supports is an unfortunate milestone in our citizenship. If he continues to endorse racial profiling, as a black citizen himself, his historic achievement would be in name only. Young blacks are thought to be victims of the new policy however the reality is that we are all becoming victims. To the average police, our black skin is an invitation to be a target. It does not matter, if one is a 49-year-old Rhodes Scholar Bay Street lawyer from Rosedale or a random person from Scarborough. To them, we are all potential suspects -- "young and black." In Canada, when most of my friends and I consider to rent or buy a luxury car, before insurance costs or the actual price of the car, our primary concern is the constant abuse we will be subjected to from the police. I wonder, with the new carding policy, if we would become targets on foot as well. That should not be the case in a progressive and inclusive society such as ours. As the Toronto Star's Rosie DiManno explained eloquently this morning, our fear is based on the fact, "there have been too many black men killed or wounded for nothing, or as the consequence of minor infractions." Lest we forget, Chief-designate Saunders is on record as supporting carding as a "valuable tool." It might as well be but it should not come at the expense of the rights of law abiding, for the most part, black citizens, of Toronto. The policy is racist, wrong and reflects poorly on our collective public ideals. We are all potential victims of it and it does not matter if we look like the new Chief or his adolescent 10-year-old son, who reminded him of the historic nature of the appointment. At the press conference announcing his appointment, he was asked about the new carding policy and he responded how he is "open to (exploring) whatever" is going to be best for the city."I hope he is sincere.

    Chief Saunders

I Regret Not Voting For Olivia Chow

Mississauga and Ajax endorsed it. Ryerson University professor, Myer Siemiatycki, sees the lack of opportunity to engage new immigrants to the political process as a "lost city of residents--who pay municipal taxes through their mortgages or rent, and contribute to services and programs through various user fees--but have no say in electing the mayor, city council, and school board trustees." Mayor Tory reflected how he has long called for keeping the status quo the way it is. For him, "better success with a program that educates students on how to get elected, including fundraising" is a better way to diversify our politics. If that was the only ingredient needed to inject diversity in our politics, I, my friend Andray Domise and many others would be councillors today. We are not. As for me, I took the most intensive and extensive political training for prospective candidates via Maytree Foundation in Toronto. Domise was overwhelmed with financial support, more than he needed, during his campaign. Yet, we both lost and became fringe voices in the end. We are a failed experiment of what Mayor Tory thinks works in our politics. If Mayor Tory really wants to promote diversity in municipal politics, he should advocate for real reform such as term limits and a recall legislation in case electors have a voter remorse. Better yet, he should reflect on allowing our new neighbors the chance to participate in our local democracy. Former American Vice President, Dick Cheney, was once asked why he oddly supports same-sex marriage for a Republican. He responded that his daughter, Mary Cheney, is a lesbian. Mayor Tory was also asked a similar question on his support for police carding and he reflected how "his kids, if they were stopped in the street, they wouldn't be treated (the way young people of color are)." I voted for Tory but I certainly did not endorse a second-class citizenship for myself. Why is he endorsing public policies that Torontonians, for the most part, do not want? Why are we, our fellow black and brown citizens, allowed to be treated in such a way? Why does he continue to fail to understand our anger? Is it because it does not affect him personally? John Tory is taking us backward not forward. Chow was the better candidate I should have supported.

If you came from another country to live in Canada, do you remember what happened on your first day here? How did you feel? What surprised you? As the days went by, turning into weeks and then years, how did you adjust to your new life? When you look back now at the process of moving to Canada, what do you remember most? The answers to those questions, and more, outline the experiences of millions of immigrants to Canada. Most Canadians or our ancestors - came from somewhere else and share similar histories. Whether the stories are happy or sad, they are told at the newly expanded Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, often through the immigrants own voices. Voices like Zena Feleke, who immigrated to Alberta from Ethiopia and remembers well his first encounter with a Canadian winter. Well, I would say the hardest thing to get adapted to in Canada was the cold weatherIt gets really hot back home, but not this kind of cold weather, says Feleke. It was very hard to experience the coldlike something Ive never seen before, the snow falling like that. It was very hard. But I think a year afterthe more you stay here, I think you get used to it. Each person has unique experiences, and immigrants are of varying races, religions, political beliefs or national origins, says the museums CEO Marie Chapman. Some arrived today and others came hundreds of years ago. Some come by boat, some by plane and others by road. Immigrants may flee war, famine, or persecution; or seek new economic and educational opportunities; or come for love or adventure. Despite such diversity, there are many common experiences when immigrating to a new country, Chapman says. Immigrants have been instrumental in shaping Canada into the nation that it is today, so the individual and collective stories are essential facets of our national history, she says. Sharing them creates greater awareness of newcomers contributions to the nation, as well as nation-wide empathy for the immigration experience. The stories are not always easy to tell or to hear, says Chapman. But they reflect who we are as Canadians. They inspire us, and they teach us. This is our story, and it is your story. You can find your story here. The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 is located at the historic Halifax Seaport and was once a major entry point into Canada. Opened to the public in 1999, the museum originally told the stories of

the over 1.2 million people who passed through its gates. The museum underwent substantial renovations in 2015 doubling its original size, making space for more exhibits that tell the larger story of Canada-wide immigration, from hundreds of years ago to the present day. It is the newest of our six national museums and the only one east of the Ottawa region. Organized around the themes Journey, Arrival, Belonging and Impact, the new exhibits describe first impressions, including details about passing through customs and obtaining documents, finding a place to live and shopping for necessities. The museum also tells the stories of new Canadian adventures, like discovering new foods and new words, learning to dress for the weather, making friends, finding jobs, exploring the country, getting involved in sports or leisure activities, and carving out new lives lives that touch other people and have an impact on Canadian society. Somewhere during this process, Canada begins to feel like home. The museum shares the stories through traditional exhibits of photos and artifacts like shipping crates, trunks, luggage, and personal treasures. Innovative digital technology allows visitors to see the waves of immigration since the late 1400s, and hear immigrants voices describing personal experiences. Immigrants and their families are represented in the exhibits, and there are opportunities to contribute personal immigration stories to Canadas history. Interactive exhibits have museum visitors boarding a rail car west to settle the prairies, smelling spices that reflect diverse ethnic backgrounds, dressing in period costumes, exploring accommodations on a trans-Atlantic ship, and participating in other hands-on exhibits, including some specifically for children. A film, genealogical research, and temporary exhibits help round out the museums offerings. The museum will continue to evolve as more immigrants come to Canada, and we collect their stories, too, Chapman said. The renovated Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 will reopen May 5, 2015.For a high resolution version of these photos, contact [email protected] questions or comments, contact [email protected]

The trend reflects what critics say is an increasingly inaccessible prime minister, who rarely holds news conferences and who, last week, signalled he would not participate in election leaders debates organized by a consortium of broadcasters.

Now he has less time for question period where, by convention, the prime minister is held to account by MPs for his governments performance.

Harpers attendances rate in the 45-minute question-and-response sessions has declined almost every year but dropped more sharply in 2014 and 2015, the review of House of Commons transcripts shows.

In 2006, his first year on the job, Harper responded to questions on 64 per cent of House of Commons sitting days.

But in 2013, when he faced hundreds of queries about his role in the Senate expense scandal, he made it to only 46 per cent of question periods.

The downward trend continued in 2014, when he attended only 36 per cent.

In April and May of this year, he has made it to only six of 22 sessions (27 per cent).

His attendance this year has been markedly worse than that of the past two Liberal prime ministers in their final years in office.

It is considered unparliamentary to refer to another MPs absence in the House of Commons, but in a scrum with journalists on Wednesday, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair referred to Harpers truancy.

It was the first time we had had a chance to see Prime Minister Harper in quite a while, he said, after a session Harper attended. We dont see him very often in the House of Commons.

When the prime minister is not in question period, he is promoting Canadian values and interests on the world stage, spokesman Stephen Lecce said in a email. The prime minister is also meeting with Canadians and Canadian businesses on our governments low-tax plan and benefits for families.

Attendance in the House of Commons has been a campaign issue before. In the televised leaders debate in the 2011 election, then-NDP leader Jack Layton turned on then-Liberal leader Michael Ignatieffs poor voting record in the House.

Most Canadians, if they dont show up for work, they dont get a promotion, Layton famously quipped.

You missed 70 per cent of the votes. I think you need to understand a little more about how our democracy works.

Ignatieffs successor, Justin Trudeau, has posted only a slightly better record attending question period than the prime minister.

Since he became leader in April 2013, Trudeau has asked questions in 39 per cent of the daily sessions, about the same rate for 2015. His office did not respond to a request for comment Friday.

As Ethiopia votes, whats free and fair got to do with it? by Terrence Lyons | The Washington Post

Ethiopian journalist Simegnish Lily Mengesha (R) sits with President Obama during a round table with persecuted journalist for World Press Freedom Day at the White House in Washington,

DC, May 1, 2015. JIM WATSON/AFP/Getty ImagesEthiopia, Washingtons security partner and Africas second most populous country, is scheduled to hold national elections on May 24. The ruling Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) and its allied parties won 99.6 percent of the seats in the last round of elections in 2010. There is no doubt that the ruling party will win again.

The party has ruled since 1991 when it seized power following a prolonged civil war. It dominates all major political, economic, and social institutions, has virtually eliminated independent political space, and opposition parties are fractured and harassed. Ethiopia has jailed more journalists than any other country in Africa.

The EPRDF is an extremely strong and effective authoritarian party. Yet Wendy Sherman, the Under Secretary of Political Affairs in the Department of State, recently said, Ethiopia is a democracy that is moving forward in an election that we expect to be free, fair and credible. What roles do elections play in authoritarian states and what, if anything, do they have to do with free, fair, and credible standards?

Part of the answer is to recognize that elections and political parties in autocratic states play different roles than they do in democratic states. Electoral processes are used by authoritarian regimes to consolidate power and to demonstrate the ruling partys dominance, as argued by scholars of comparative politics such as Schedler and Gandhi and Lust-Okar. Research by Geddes shows that single-party authoritarian regimes tend to be more stable and last longer than military or personalistic ones. Strong parties manage instability by encouraging intra-elite compromise, co-opting opposition, and institutionalizing incentives to reward loyalty. Elections and strong political parties thereby contribute to authoritarian resilience, as scholars note with reference to China, Iran and Syria, and Zimbabwe.

Non-competitive elections are common in authoritarian states and incumbents often win by incredible margins. In Sudan, President Omar al-Bashir won 94 percent of the vote in April 2015 elections, Uzbek President Islam Karimov over 90 percent in March

2015, and Kazak President Nursultan Nazarbayev 97 percent in April 2015. Rwandan President Paul Kagame, when asked if his 93 percent landslide in 2010 represented the will of the people, reportedly answered: So, 93 percent I wonder why it wasnt higher than that? The EPRDFs 99.6 percent victory in 2010 created credibility problems in North American and European capitals where diplomats often asked, Couldnt they have just won by 60 or 75 percent? But the point of elections under authoritarian rule is not to obtain a working majority or to win international approval. The purpose is to dominate domestic politics completely and thereby deter any leader from thinking he or she could challenge ruling party successfully. The dramatic, overwhelming victories send an important domestic message of strength and power, even as they strain credibility abroad.

The EPRDF recognizes the dangers it faces from competitive elections and that it democratizes at its peril. In 2005 Ethiopia held competitive elections, complete with significant opposition participation, major rallies, and televised debates. According to official results, the oppositions share of seats in parliament increased from 12 to 172, representing 31 percent of the total. The opposition parties swept all the seats in Addis Ababa and many cabinet ministers and high-ranking officials lost their positions. This shift represented the potential for an important advance in democratization and a major break in the ruling partys domination.

Members of the opposition, however, refused to accept the results and claimed that massive fraud had denied them outright victory. Some opposition leaders boycotted the parliament. Post-election demonstrations turned violent and were brutally put down by the Ethiopian military, leaving nearly 200 dead and an estimated 30,000 arrested. The 2005 election began with a democratic opening but ended with what the Department of State characterized as the criminalization of dissent.

In the aftermath of the 2005 crisis, the EPRDF responded by demonstrating its extraordinary strength in using the levers of state power and its considerable organizational capacities

to control all aspects of political life. New laws largely eliminated civil society institutions and the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation has been used against journalists and other critics. Just before a visit by Secretary of State Kerry in April 2014, the regime arrested a group of young bloggers who called themselves Zone Nine and charged them with terrorism. Washington recently urged Addis Ababa to refrain from using its Anti-Terrorism Proclamation as a mechanism to curb the free exchange of ideas.

As a consequence of its restrictions on politics over the past decade, the ruling party has little to worry about with regard to the opposition parties competing in the upcoming elections. The limits on formal political competition have made social mobilization outside of the electoral process more important. A series of non-violent protests in 2012 by Ethiopian Muslims provided an important model of sustained, peaceful social mobilization. The regime arrested the movements leadership and has tried to link the protests to external enemies and terrorism. In 2014, the security services quickly suppressed demonstrations on university campuses by Oromos, highlighting the historical sense of marginalization perceived by many in Ethiopias single largest ethnic group. In April 2015, a government organized rally to mourn the killing of Ethiopian migrants in Libya by the Islamic State (ISIS) ended with arrests and clashes between security forces and protestors. The Ethiopian regime has managed each of these challenges without significant difficulty but the

    underlying grievances remain.

Under Secretary of State Sherman characterized Ethiopias elections in terms of free, fair, and credible but that obscures the nature of the regime and mischaracterizes the functions of elections under authoritarianism. A Washington Post editorial recently criticized Sherman and argued: If the election is not judged by independent observers to live up to Ms. Shermans billing, the administration should swallow her words and change its approach. But the results in Ethiopia and other authoritarian regimes holding elections are largely settled months if not years in advance, as powerful ruling parties restrict political opposition, civil society, and independent media in ways that virtually eliminate competition. The voting that will take place on May 24 will not provide citizens a meaningful role in selecting their next government. Such elections, however, are not pointless. As in other authoritarian states, elections play a key role in providing the setting for the ruling party to demonstrate its domination.

He began his research on Ethiopia in 1987, served as Senior Advisor to the Carter Centers election monitoring mission to Ethiopia in 2005, and currently is writing a book on Ethiopian politics since 1991.

Chinese medicine believes in nourishing egg quality with herbs and acupuncture. Is there anything to it?By Magaly Olivero March 24, 2015 | 10:47 a.m. EDT + MoreThe ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture is fast-becoming an accepted supplement to modern-day assisted reproductive technology that helps infertile couples become parents.

More doctors are open to referring patients to complementary medicine for their reproductive health as well as for their emotional well-being, says Mimi Baker, a licensed acupuncturist in Princeton, New Jersey, who practices traditional Chinese medicine and works in conjunction with fertility experts.

Dr. Frederick L. Licciardi, a professor at the NYU Langone Fertility Center, where he directs the Fertility Wellness Program, says more women are seeking ancillary services while they pursue fertility treatments. The program offers acupuncture, yoga, psychological services, nutrition and mind-body classes.

Women and couples face many pressures when they are undergoing fertility treatment. Anything we can do to promote their emotional well-being and make the process easier so they can continue with their treatment is beneficial, says Licciardi, a reproductive endocrinologist and co-founder of the fertility center.

About 7.4 million women of childbearing age have used infertility services, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Assisted reproductive techniques

East Meets West: Treating Infertility With Acupuncture and Modern

Medicineinclude medication, artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization, which involves the transfer of an embryo created in a laboratory dish to the uterus.

An ancient form of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture involves the painless placement of ultrathin needles into strategic points on the body to balance Qi (pronounced chee) a form of life energy believed to flow throughout the body. A blocked Qi can lead to physical and emotional illness.

Acupuncture helps to stimulate the bodys own healing mechanism, says Baker, who is treating an increasing number of women in their mid-30s to early 40s.

Experts believe acupuncture can increase blood flow to the pelvic area (which could help with embryo implantation), regulate the menstrual cycle, trigger ovulation and reduce the side effects of medications associated with assisted reproductive technology. It also increases the release of endorphins, the bodys mood-enhancing hormone that reduces stress and relieves pain.

A lot of good hormonal things happen when people are deeply relaxed, says Steve Blumenthal, a licensed acupuncturist with the Green Hills Natural Health Clinic in Nashville, Tennessee, and a fellow of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine. Women with fertility issues represent about 70 percent of his practice. For further information call:-

  • Op-ed Ethiopia where a single party has ruled for 25 years

TZTA: Page 24: May 2015: [email protected] / [email protected] / www.tzta.ca.: Follow us on Facebook & Twitter

    Op-ed

EPRDFIf the dignity of the individual is upheld across Africa Americans will be freer as well I believe that none of us are fully free when others in the human family remain shackled by poverty or disease or oppression. President Obama, June 30, 2013

    This is true in my country of origin, Ethiopia where a single party has ruled for 25 years and intends to rule perpetually. This Orwellian state receives over $4 billion annually, the largest in Africa and the U.S. is the largest bilateral donor. Imagine one party winning elections every 4 years in the U.S. by barring or intimidating contestants. Imagine candidates being clubbed, jailed and or forced to flee if they protest peacefully. Imagine an election without meaningful policy debates. Imagine the notion that despite $40 billion in development aid, Ethiopia is ranked as one of the poorest and most corrupt countries on the planet;

per capita income is a third of the African average. This food aid dependent country supported by the U.S. lost $10 billion in four years through illicit outflow. Imagine how many factories this would build in a poor country.

It is not the stolen money that forced this American voter to write this op-ed. It is gross violations of human rights and degradation of Ethiopians, decimation of civil society and criminalization of free expression and political contest, values Americans cherish the most. In Journalism is not a crime Human Rights Watch had forewarned donors The Ethiopian governments systematic repression of independent media has created a bleak landscape for free expression ahead of the May 2015 general electionsat least 22 journalists, bloggers and publishers were criminally charged, and more than 30 journalists fled the country. The Ethiopian government uses the 2009 Anti-Terrorism and the Charities and Societies

Organizations (CSO) legislations as blunt instruments to punish those who stand up for freedom, democracy and the rule of law. Employment opportunities are guided by ethnicity and political affiliation. Dont you think these conditions contribute to instability and terrorism? Is this in Americas long-term interest?

Freedom Houses Freedom in the World Report 2015 ranks Ethiopia 43 out of 49 Sub-Saharan African countries that are not free. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) identifies Ethiopia among the two top jailers of journalists in Africa and among the top four in the world. It is my genuine belief Americas long-term security and trade interests and the interests of the Ethiopian people will be best served by promoting and defending respect for human rights and freedoms, civil society, accountable and representative governance in Ethiopia unconditionally. At minimum, the U.S. should stop providing aid dollars to a regime that decimates independent media, obstructs the participation of opposition parties and jails or forces critics to flee in droves. These requests are consistent with Americas own core values of political pluralism, free expression and freedom of the press, respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law. No free, fair, open and credible election would take place on May 24, 2015 under this suffocating environment. I do not believe Americans want dictatorship over democracy.

Consider an editorial comment on May 6, 2015, Elections, Ethiopian Style by Human Rights Watch. Since the last election, the ruling party has exerted more control and increased its repression of

basic liberties, including the rights to free expression, assembly and associationAs Ethiopians go to the polls in late May, 2015, prospects for the opposition to fully and fairly campaign are grim and a similar editorial by the Washington Post on May 1, 2015 Make-believe in Ethiopia rebutting remarks by the Department of States Undersecretary for Political Affairs, Wendy Sherman that Ethiopia is a democracy that is moving forward in an election that we expect to be free, fair, credible, open and inclusive. I commend the post for stating the facts. The regimes repression deserves condemnation, not praise, from Washington. I fear genuinely that the Ethiopian government has created a suffocating environment of disempowerment engendering terrorism that may lead to the fracturing of an already polarized and volatile country. I urge the Government of the United States and American voters to help avert another failed state in the Horn of Africa.

Would you urge your representatives in Congress and Government of these United States to do all they can so that your taxes no longer shore up one the most oppressive governments in Africa?

Again: About 1,000 Ethiopian Israelis have flooded Tel Aviv on Monday night

By Tova DvorinEthiopian Israelis have flooded Tel Aviv on Monday night, demonstrating from Rothschild Blvd. to Ibn Gavriol St. to protest racism and discrimination.

They say that there are rifts, they say there is no leadership but each and every one of us has come here to make a change, protest organizer Inbal Bogula shouted during the rally. Lets show the residents of Tel Aviv and the cops what noise we can make, we will walk here slowly so they can feel us, that each of us is a leader who came to make a change.

Hundreds of police officers, some with riot gear and on horseback, have also flooded the area after violence tore

through similar protests earlier this month. Police forces were concentrated in Rabin Square.

However, while both protestors and police noted that the demonstrations were pre-coordinated and not meant to be violent, they have begun to spiral once again out of control, according to Yediot Aharonot.

Despite the strict boundaries set by police, demonstrators have now begun walking in the middle of the road to Rabin Square, actively disrupting traffic and in some cases laying down in the middle of the street.

Of the 1,000 original protestors, about 300

are at the center of the ruckus, according to the daily, and police have lost control over the event in the intervening hours.

Earlier Monday night, some of the protestors attempted to block the Ayalon Highway once again, according to Channel 2, but were successfully deterred.

Despite comparisons with previous protests, however, some news outlets are now noting that the ruckus overall is more subdued and estimate that it may be due, in part, to both the pre-coordination with police and the notable absence of former Yesh Atid MK Pnina Tamno-Shatta, who was present at a previous demonstration which saw the Ayalon shut down for several hours.

    What went wrong?

When protests began, both police and protestors affirmed to the media that the demonstration would keep to strict boundaries and not interrupt the commute.

This demonstration is planned and approved, subject to conditions that were set through dialogue and agreement with officials leading the protestand local authorities, a spokeswoman for the Tel Aviv District Police, Chief Superintendent Hila Hamo, said to

Walla! News earlier Monday night. The District Polices policy is to do everything possible in order to allow members of the Ethiopian community and their supporters toexpress their views freely. The police will be there to secure and protect the protesters, residents and the general public.

However, the spokeswoman added that in light of recent events, the police are prepared and equipped ahead of the possibility of violence.

Enforcement measures will be taken against wrongdoers immediately, with an emphasis on arrests and indictments in an accelerated procedure, Hamo warned.

Several protestors noted to the news agency that they had no intent of becoming violent during the protest and that the demonstrations were more about keeping issues to the Ethiopian community in the public eye.

Two Israel Police officers brutally beat Ethiopian soldier Damas Pakada in Holon earlier this month, sparking a series of mass protests in major Israeli cities.

Israel has some 135,500 Jewish Israelis of Ethiopian descent, including more than 50,000 born inside the country, according to AFP.
