THE WRIGHT UPS MAY 2015 ISSUE Greetings dear loved ones! We are in the middle of Easter season and once again celebrating that Christ is risen! This time of year calls us to reflect on being Christian and God’s miraculous love in our lives. There are many things happening throughout our community and in our church that help us dig deeper into understanding our Christian identity. Our church specifically is celebrating God’s call and presence this month with confirmation. Since September, Dakota Hunt and Elizabeth Shockley have been faithfully discerning being confirmed at Wright. They have gathered every Sunday morning before church to discuss what it means to be a Christian and a member of Wright. They have used music, history, prayer, and dialogue to deepen their understanding of God’s call on their lives. Traditionally confirmation is the third rite of initiation into Christianity. The other two rituals are Baptism and Eucharist. Confirmation in our church is a meaningful time for young adults to reflect deeply on their relationship to God and community. We as a church support these two through their journeys because we also ask the same questions. Adults usually have had a previous experience where it was affirmed that their church and faith were where they belonged. We all know that this is not the end of the journey, and that questions continue. Confirmation provides our young adults the opportunity to prayerfully dig deeper. Their journey mirrors the spiritual exploration we all have throughout life. We support with love and prayer those who go through confirmation because their discernment reveals how God is still speaking and moving throughout our community. This month of confirmation comes with the celebration of Pentecost, which is the first calling of the Christian community. This is also known as the birthday of the church. This is a celebration of the Holy Spirit’s power. The story of Pentecost comes from Acts 2:1-21. This is where the disciples, having watched Jesus ascend into heaven, are moved by the Divine to proclaim the Good News. The Holy Spirit is traditionally the member of the trinity associated with creativity and the ability to fill us with God’s movement. It is the Holy Spirit that descends on confirmation candidates as they affirm their faith. This Being of the Divine Trinity was what came to the disciples to move them from fear into love. The Holy Spirit is the one who propels us all to answer God’s call on our lives. This month let us pray and celebrate the presence of the Holy Spirit. We do this in the celebration, support, and love we have for Dakota and Elizabeth. We also do this because we are aware that Dakota and Elizabeth are not alone in their adventure. Our whole church joins them knowing that we ourselves are discerning God’s call on our lives. We know deeply the truth of faith as a lifelong commitment of seeking understanding. Let us take this month to celebrate the Holy Spirit’s power to care for and move us through life. Many blessings to you throughout this month! God Bless Rev. THE WRIGHT UPS

September 2014 edition

MAY 2015 ISSUE Greetings dear loved ones!

We are in the middle of Easter season and once again celebrating that Christ is risen!

This time of year calls us to reflect on being Christian and God’s miraculous love in our lives.

There are many things happening throughout our community and in our church that help us dig

deeper into understanding our Christian identity.

Our church specifically is celebrating God’s call and presence this month with

confirmation. Since September, Dakota Hunt and Elizabeth Shockley have been faithfully

discerning being confirmed at Wright. They have gathered every Sunday morning before

church to discuss what it means to be a Christian and a member of Wright. They have used

music, history, prayer, and dialogue to deepen their understanding of God’s call on their lives.

Traditionally confirmation is the third rite of initiation into Christianity. The other two

rituals are Baptism and Eucharist. Confirmation in our church is a meaningful time for young

adults to reflect deeply on their relationship to God and community.

We as a church support these two through their journeys because we also ask the same

questions. Adults usually have had a previous experience where it was affirmed that their

church and faith were where they belonged. We all know that this is not the end of the journey,

and that questions continue. Confirmation provides our young adults the opportunity to

prayerfully dig deeper. Their journey mirrors the spiritual exploration we all have throughout

life. We support with love and prayer those who go through confirmation because their

discernment reveals how God is still speaking and moving throughout our community.

This month of confirmation comes with the celebration of Pentecost, which is the first

calling of the Christian community. This is also known as the birthday of the church. This is a

celebration of the Holy Spirit’s power. The story of Pentecost comes from Acts 2:1-21. This is

where the disciples, having watched Jesus ascend into heaven, are moved by the Divine to

proclaim the Good News.

The Holy Spirit is traditionally the member of the trinity associated with creativity and

the ability to fill us with God’s movement. It is the Holy Spirit that descends on confirmation

candidates as they affirm their faith. This Being of the Divine Trinity was what came to the

disciples to move them from fear into love. The Holy Spirit is the one who propels us all to

answer God’s call on our lives.

This month let us pray and celebrate the presence of the Holy Spirit. We do this in the

celebration, support, and love we have for Dakota and Elizabeth. We also do this because we

are aware that Dakota and Elizabeth are not alone in their adventure. Our whole church joins

them knowing that we ourselves are discerning God’s call on our lives. We know deeply the

truth of faith as a lifelong commitment of seeking understanding. Let us take this month to

celebrate the Holy Spirit’s power to care for and move us through life.

Many blessings to you throughout this month!

God Bless

Church Library News The Church Library is undergoing some reorganization. The non-fiction section is being converted to the Dewey Decimal System. This will make it easier to find books as each book will have its own call number. The card catalog is gone and the books are being entered into a spreadsheet. There is a printout of the spreadsheet in the library listing books by author, title, and call number. The spreadsheet will also be posted on the church website. This is an ongoing project. Only the books on the bookcase closest to the sink have Dewey Decimal numbers. As more books are given Dewey Decimal numbers the printout in the library and the posted spreadsheet will be updated.

All are welcome to use the church library. Books are checked out on the honor system by filling out the book card in the front of the book. Please write the date, your name and placing the card in the box with the two ducks on the book case. This box is at the end of the table. When returning the borrowed books just leave them on the table in the library. The Library has purchased the 12 volume set of The New Interpreter’s Bible Commentary. This set is currently on the top of the bookcase at the end of the conference table

Looking for something to read? Try the Paperback Book Exchange table in the hall in front of the Library. The paperback books on this table do not need to be checked out. Just leave a paperback book in good condition in place of the one you took. You are welcome to leave paperback books in good condition on the Paperback Book Exchange table even if you don’t take one.

We wish to thank Suzanne Robb for all her hard work in getting our library in the proper order and into tip top shape. Suzanne, your work is greatly appreciated.

Saturday, November 7, the craft group is hosting a craft bazaar for any

the public for you to sell your wares. If you would like a table contact Carol Rivers or Robin.

Speaking of ART.

All the folks of Wright Church would like to congratulate CANDY CANNING on being chosen to do a sculpture for downtown Boise.

She was 1 0f 3 artist selected from 13 applicants. Candy's "Le Retour" and will be completed and installed some time in October. Stay tuned for more details.

New Lights Are In!

Over the past couple months our property committee, Bright Ideas Lighting, and Idaho Power have been working to bring Wright Church‘s

lighting into the 21st. Century. New motion censor switches have been installed in all restrooms. High efficiency

bulbs have replaced old ones for energy savings. All exit lights and emergency lights have been upgraded. All this at very little cost to Wright Church because

we qualified for the Idaho Power rebate and incentive programs. Yea! Can You See Me Now?

Robin is happy to report that all emergency lights work after a recent power outage in the neighborhood. The ones in the ladies room came on immediately– thank heavens .

JEANS 4 GENES You all know that here at Wright Church you are welcome to come as you are and that you can dress as casually as you like. But on May 10th, you are encouraged to wear your jeans in support of Huntington’s Disease Awareness. May has been designated as Huntington’s Disease Awareness in cities and states throughout the country including the State of Idaho and the Cities of Meridian, Boise, and Twin Falls. Wright Church has long been a supporter of those affected by Huntington’s Disease, opening our doors to the only support group currently offered in Idaho.

By recognizing Huntington’s Disease, we are in no way diminishing the celebration of our Mothers.

In further support of Huntington’s Disease, please consider donating whatever you are comfortable to the HDSA. A giving basket will be available in the back of the sanctuary on Sunday May 10th.

What is Huntington’s Disease?

Huntington's Disease (HD) is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown

of nerve cells in the brain. It deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities during

their prime working years and has no cure.

o HD is known as the quintessential family disease because every child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 chance of carrying the faulty gene. Today, there are 30,000 symptomatic Americans and more than 200,000 at-risk of inheriting the disease. o Many describe the symptoms of HD as having ALS, Parkinson’s & Alzheimer’s – simultaneous-ly. o Although medications can relieve some symptoms in certain individuals, research has yet to find a means of conquering or even slowing the deadly progression of HD. o Symptoms of HD usually appear in an individual between 30 and 50 years of age and progress over a 10 to 25 year period. o Eventually, a person with HD becomes totally dependent upon others for his or her care.

o If one of your parents had HD, you have a 50% of inheriting the gene that causes the dis-ease. o A genetic test is available for people over the age of 18 to determine if you have the defective gene. o If a predictive genetic test indicates the presence of the mutant Huntington gene, you will develop the symptoms of the disease (100%) unless new therapies are developed to stop the progression of the disease.

o More than 30,000 people in the United States are currently diagnosed with HD, and another 200,000 are at-risk because one of their parents was affected by HD. o Approximately 10 percent of all HD cases occur in children under the age of 18. o Juvenile onset HD progresses more quickly than adult-onset HD.

o Because scientists know exactly what causes HD – a specific genetic mutation – there is a lot of research going on to help Huntington’s disease families and also learn important infor-mation that can help other neurodegenerative and genetic diseases, like Alzheimer’s, Parkin-son’s, and Lou Gehrig’s (ALS). o The genetic defect that causes HD was discovered more than 20 years ago.

Note from the Board Chairman Community Supper

Have any of you ever wondered where your next meal will come from? Wright Church continues to provide meals to our extended community every 4th Thursday of the month. This past Thursday I was one of several volunteers that helped out. I al-ways feel better when I do it for a number of reasons. · The smile on someone’s face to know that they are getting a “healthy meal” in a safe place. · I particularly like when around 6:45, knowing that even after everyone is fed that we have leftovers. While many of us are watching our weight or know that tomorrow we have food, some of the folks we serve dinner to may not know when or where they will eat again. · The appreciation that I see, hear, and feel from our guests. · The satisfaction that I helped out another and helped them feel connected to our community. I greatly appreciate Julie and Janice's efforts in organizing this event each month as well as all who volunteer. What a great way to express our Christian faith, fellowship, and love by sharing food and hope in a supportive and non-judgmental way. Volun-teers are always needed and it is one of those jobs that makes you feel better.

Don’t Forget our Spring Clean-up week. Carol Rivers has done a great of job identifying cleaning tasks for all to help with. Just like we all do our spring cleaning each year, the church needs it as well. Thanks in ad-vance for all your help. Please stop by the church and help with what you can
