May 2015 Dear Friends The whole world honors nurses this month. Here in the US, we mark National Nurse Day on May 6th, while other countries celebrate International Nurses’ Day on May 12th. To all the nurses at Mary’s Center, I say thank you for looking after our patients in such a caring and compassionate way, especially our immigrant patients as they navigate the sometimes complex and intimidating health care system in this country. In fact, it was the nurses I met as a young immigrant girl who inspired me to pursue this profession. As a child and a tree climber, I ended up being treated in the emergency room several times and had to have a cast on my leg and on an arm at different times, all under the care of amazing nurses. Interacting with the nurses helped me to channel my interest in science and math and decide to go to nursing school, one of the smartest decisions I ever made. As a nurse I learned to be courageous and creative, to make decisions quickly, and to take action while keeping compassion and integrity as my compass. Those skills have served me well over the years. I see similar characteristics in the Mary’s Center nurses. There is the nurse who goes out of his or her way to make sure that the patient understands how to take their medication. There is the nurse who brings staff together to acknowledge great team work and support each other. There is the nurse who is enthusiastic about starting a medical assistant program. There is the nurse who works hard to understand Mary’s Center’s partnerships and to breakdown any obstacles for the sake of the patients. And there are the awards that they receive, like the one Vivian Cativo, our Nurse Manager at Ontario pictured below, just won from the Centers for Disease Control, the CDC 2015 Childhood Immunization Champion Award for the District of Columbia! She truly deserves the recognition for her commitment all these years. Well done and keep up the good work Vivian! We also honor mothers on Sunday May 10 th . Motherhood is another challenging job which also requires a mix of tenderness and toughness. The 7 th President of the United States, Andrew Jackson, put it best when he paid tribute to his mother, saying: “There never was a woman like her. She was gentle as a dove and brave as a lioness.” To all those gentle doves and brave lionesses, the mothers and grandmothers who keep our communities strong, I salute you on your day. Much health and joy to you and your families all year long! Warmly, Maria S. Gomez, President and CEO MC News May 10th: Happy Mother’s Day! Our Caring Nurses In celebration of National Nurse Day (May 6 th ) and National Nurse Week (May 6- 12 th ), we say thank you to our more than 20 nurses at our four locations and CCIN for the wonderful work they do and the commitment they show every day. Dear Friends

The whole world honors nurses this month. Here in the US, we mark National Nurse Day on May 6th, while other countries celebrate International Nurses’ Day on May 12th. To all the nurses at Mary’s Center, I say thank you

for looking after our patients in such a caring and compassionate way, especially our immigrant patients as they navigate the sometimes complex and intimidating health care system in this country.

There

is the nurse who works hard to understand Mary’s Center’s partnerships and to breakdown any obstacles for the sake of the patients. And there are the awards that they receive, like the one Vivian Cativo, our Nurse Manager at Ontario pictured below, just won from the Centers for Disease Control, the CDC 2015 Childhood Immunization Champion Award for the District of Columbia! We are days away from being one of the first community centers in the area that has a mobile app! How cool is that?

Our Communications Department is working diligently with the app developers to have it available and ready for our participants, staff, board, volunteers and donors ready to install on iPhone and Android. More details to come.

Coming VERY SOON!

The partnership continues to grow stronger!

Briya, in partnership with Bridges Public Charter School, was recently awarded the building complex at the Mamie D Lee Center (100 Gallatin Street NE), near the Fort Totten Metro station, and Mary’s Center will partner with both charter schools to provide medical, dental, behavioral health and social services.

Bridges serves children in Pre-K through 5th grade and specializes in serving children with special needs, which means we will be able to focus more on this population. The new site is scheduled to be operational towards the end of 2016. David, Dara and Dr. Elliot couldn’t be happier with the

board’s approval to move forward with Briya’s “Mamie D Lee” project. Here they are holding the Mamie D. Lee ‘gift horse,’ given to Mary’s Center by Briya as a symbol of this exciting expansion to their partnership.

Christie McKay, Director of Education, and her team have been working on this project for months. Congratulations for making it happen.

Exciting Mary’s Center - Briya Expansion Project

Several community organizations in the area, including Mary's Center, organized a very successful community forum with Congressman Luis Gutierrez of Chicago on April 30th at Bell Multicultural High School. Thank you to those of you who joined us.

Mary's Center and Congressman Luis Gutierrez

Over 300 people came to hear the Congressman Gutierrez speaking about immigration reform and they left with a great sense of hope and renewed commitment to continue the fight for immigration reform to help millions of hard-working immigrant families.

Congressman Gutierrez spoke for more than one hour and answered questions from the audience, including one from Juan Miranda, the site director at our Georgia location.

The DC-MD-VA Coalition in Support of Children Feeling Violence in Central America (which we are part of) recently released a report about the challenges facing unaccompanied children when they arrive in this country, and the work done by organizations like Mary’s Center and many others.

A big thank you to Maria Andreina Vethencourt and the Family Support Workers, the clinicians and all of you who are supporting these families for your amazing work. Here’s the link to the report.
