Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, What is the next big thing for Shepherd of the Hills? We’ve committed ourselves to a vision – to be a place of refuge in a stormy world – and a mission – to multiply places of refuge throughout our world. By His grace, God has allowed us to live out our purpose statements as a congregation for nearly five decades of transformational, life-changing ministry. Approach-ing a major milestone of 50 years of ministry in 2019, now is a good time to begin asking ourselves how we can celebrate our history and look ahead to what is next. How can we best carry out our vision and mission in the years to come? This article is the beginning of a conversation about a vision for the future of our ministry at Shepherd. First, we strive to be a PLACE of refuge. Shepherd is a wonderful place. In recent years, we’ve dedicated significant resources for maintenance and modernization upgrades. We’ve redone the lobby, retiled the church, added new audio-visual technologies for worship services, installed a digital sign, installed a lift to the upstairs of the church, and performed needed upkeep on our property. What’s Next for Shepherd? Rev. Christopher M. Kennedy-Senior Pastor [email protected]

One area of our campus, however, could use much more attention than it has received in a while: our school building. The yellow metal building is lovingly nicknamed “Old Yeller.” In the 1980s, a busy time for our campus, we had eight different building projects for the school, resulting in the current facilities. The 1980s were a while ago, three decades to be exact. The need for updated facilities is great, as new char-ter schools are attracting families with brand new campuses, and we’re working hard to keep up with ag-ing buildings. Tirelessly, we continue to offer academic excellence in a Christian environment, making the most of all we have. We’ve long called our school our number one mission; through our school, we’re reaching more than 400 families daily with the Gospel. The first question I invite us to pray and dream about is: Could we be a better PLACE of refuge through new school facilities? A second question reflects on our calling to MULTIPLY places of refuge throughout our world. As one ex-ample, exciting work in Haiti is evidence of our congregation’s heart for missions. In addition to all work being done internationally, there is also more work to be done locally. San Antonio is fast multiplying. The northwest and west sides of town beyond 1604 are booming. Those areas are expected to grow by 20 percent or more over the next five years. But there is minimal LCMS presence out there. Recently, Rev. Mike Newman from our denomination’s Texas District approached the church staff with a challenge: The district would like to start new churches in the growing areas of San Antonio. Would Shepherd help? From the district’s perspective, the need is present. We’re a part of a district that has planted 100 new churches in Texas in the past decade – and none in San Antonio. The state’s population is projected to grow by 12 million people over the next quar-ter century – and two thirds will be unchurched. The number of new unchurched people in Texas will be greater than the population of 44 of our nation’s 50 states. Rubbing up against that statistic is the words of Scripture, which say God our Savior “wants all people to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:3-4) The second question, then, is: Could we better MULTIPLY places of refuge by starting a new ministry in a growing area of San Antonio? Both questions are big. One has to do with strengthening our presence at 6914 Wurzbach and one has to do with expanding our influence through a daughter or satellite congregation (not a relocation or campus move). These questions may be some of the biggest we’ve asked ourselves in many years. I believe they’re both great questions that merit discussion and prayer. Much more could be said – and needs to be said – as we explore these big questions. Future vision will be the main topic of conversation at the May 17 congregational meeting. More opportunities to dream to-gether and to share your thoughts and ideas will follow. I invite your prayers for the future vision of our ministry. The Lord has called us to great things and graciously empowers us to do even greater things in His name. To God be the glory! Yours in Christ, Pastor Chris

Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran School has been blessed to celebrate 35 years of education this school year. As we come to the end of another school year, we thank God for the opportunity we have had to continue to educate over 400 students each day. The 2014-2015 school year highlights include the following: Cooper, the comfort dog, received a huge welcome by the SHLS students. He is part of the Shepherd family,

has received millions of hugs, and brings joy to all who meet him! SHLS was blessed to have Mrs. Debbie Eickstead voted as “Outstanding Texas Lutheran Educator of the Year.”

What a blessing it is to have Debbie lead our Pre-Kinder program. SHLS launched its first robotics team — SHLS Rambotics. We are proud of their accomplishments and their

participation in various competitions. Classrooms were painted by SHLS teaching staff who generously gave of their summer vacation time to paint

each and every classroom. The painting looks great! Restrooms were remodeled…wow, they look great! Science Fusion curriculum was adopted for Junior High giving the students the capability of online resources,

STEM based instruction and the opportunity for a successful science fair. SHLS sports hosted its first annual basketball tournament on the LHS campus for Junior High students in and

around San Antonio. BRAIN POWER HOUR was launched under the direction of Mrs. Kathy Becker — enrichment/advanced weekly

learning opportunities for all students in grades K-5. Advanced reading groups were added to the K-2 instructional program. Art/music enhancements — SHLS received a grant to integrate a new music curriculum for K-2. SHLS opened the “Ram Café” with Chef Tony providing breakfast and lunch to our students. Students enjoyed their journey and research on different cultures and countries as SHLS staged its first Inter-

national Day and International Open House. The SHLS band program hosted the Texas PALS Music Festival. Schools from across Texas joined us for this

competition. Shepherd’s band and choir each received an “excellent” rating. The annual SHLS auction earned $25,000 for student educational enhancements. Along with our accomplishments and celebrations, we also mourned the loss of special brothers and sisters in Christ this school year, as God welcomed Sandra Whittle (cafeteria), Homer Whittle (cafeteria) and Margie Hinojosa (retired teacher) into His eternal presence during the 2014-2015 school year. While we grieve their loss, we celebrate who they were to us and what they did in helping to make our school a place of refuge for so many young souls throughout the years. Thank you for your continued support of the Shepherd school ministry. Working for Christ, Sue Gary Principal

Ministry Matters Alice Klement-Director of Equipping Ministry [email protected]

2015 - First Distribution of World Mission Funds Remember: The purpose of the World Mission Fund (WMF) Ministry Team is to solicit, manage and publi-cize money that is taken into the WMF. Their mission statement reads: The mission of this team is to help ensure that there is a well thought-out financial plan in place for responding to mission opportunities as they arise. WMF money is not part of the congregation’s spending plan (budget). Money is ear-marked for this fund through special donations (Birthdays, Anniversaries, Memorials, and the use of “Mission” or “Designated Fund” envelopes in the offering envelope box). The WMF Ministry Team met April 19, 2015 to discuss three requests for funds that had been received: Chen Wang submitted a request for funds to support Andrew Martin’s work in Cambodia. The team allotted

$300 for Andrew Martin’s work which includes discipling young men at Water of Life and leading three dif-ferent outreaches: one at the dump, one at the killing fields, and the Cambodia Crocheting Sisters. These were street women who have been taught to support themselves by crocheting and selling stuffed animals.

Pastor Ezekiel, with whom we have worked in the refugee community in the Wurzbach/Gardendale area, requested $3,500 to bring his brother-in-law here to do ministry. Pastor Ezekiel’s brother-in-law was assis-tant to the president of Bhutan. After his conversion, as he says, “All of his riches were gone in order to gain the true riches of knowing Jesus Christ.” The team decided to reserve $3,500 to be released when Pastor Ezekiel’s brother-in-law receives his visa and a sponsor in the USA.

Judy Meyer requested $480 to sponsor an orphan in Kenya for one year. The Meyer’s previous congrega-tion was instrumental in getting Rev. ChuChu ordained and placed in Kenya. The team decided that the op-portunity to sponsor an orphan in Kenya will be offered to the people of Shepherd to take on as individual/family missions along with opportunities to sponsor orphans in Nepal and Haiti.

Would you like to influence future world leaders? This is not as far-fetched as it might initially sound. The young people who come to San Antonio from foreign countries to further their education at the UT Health Science Center will assuredly become leaders when they return to their homelands. 80% of them are never invited into American homes. Scripture has much to say about God’s desire for his people to welcome foreigners and strangers. Folks from SHLC take lunch to the internationals at San Antonio Station Apartments every Saturday, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The purpose is to build relationships with resi-dents. You can become part of the team that serves this weekly lunch. We pray that as relationships are built there will be individuals/families from Shep-herd who are willing to take international students into their homes for meals or to go on outings. Please think about it. Please pray about it. As is usually the case, when we step out to serve our Lord, the blessings we receive far outweigh the bless-ings we give.

Greg & Denise Treadway invited Bo Meng to join their family for Easter.

Haiti Mission Alice Klement-Director of Equipping Ministry [email protected]

Haiti Mission “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the au-thorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiri-tual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:10-12 One cannot help but think of spiritual opposition when the roadblocks to our Haiti mission are recounted.

How we rejoiced when our own Herb Nordmeyer (pictured in the selfie above with a Haitian girl from the or-phanage that we helped build) was able to develop low cost, disaster resistant housing. After much planning and meeting, it was determined that the houses would be built on a city dump in a dire slum called Jubilee in the city of Gonaives where we partner with Faith Lutheran Church. Herb wrote a construction manual and made arrangements for it to be translated into Creole because our goal is to have the Haitians carry on the construction that Herb teaches them. The mayor of Gonaives was brought onboard. Through his influence, the building site was procured. Herb went to Haiti in early April to build a prototype of his dome house design and to address issues that arise be-fore the “big” trip with the SHLC mission team in July. Then the roadblocks began to appear: The shipping company neglected to load the supplies needed to build the prototype. The construction manual was not translated on time. The mayor was taken to the hospital. Meetings with him were delayed. The mayor became insistent that the July trip be moved to June. This is because, as in many parts of

Europe, vacations are taken during the month of July. In Haiti that means the government shuts down in July. The mayor would be unavailable.

Herb determined that it is so important that the mayor take a lead in the building project plans that he is now working to advance his next trip to June.

Now the problem of funding rears its head. There is no mission team scheduled for June. Going to Haiti without a team, means that costs for a June trip for Herb will amount to between $5,000 and $10,000.

We who are part of the home team are asked to pray tirelessly. See Ephesians 6: 10-20. Please prayerfully consider giving to offset Herb’s travel expenses.

Music Ministry

Rev. Craig D. Meissler-Pastor of Music Ministry [email protected]

Church Music Ministry – A heartfelt thanks to all of the singers and musicians who participated in the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter Sunday services. Our music ministry is comprised of over seventy congrega-tion members who devote their time and talents in dedication to the music of the church. Their commit-ment of time in regular weekly rehearsals, extra rehearsals, and regular participation in Sunday services adds so very much to the worship life of our congregation. It is truly a joy for Mr. Urban and me to work with and for this group of people and especially you, the congregation. We are very blessed to have such a wealth of musical talent, and I encourage each one of you to keep in your prayers and support the people that make up the music ministry of Shepherd of the Hills.

Worship Service Planning - Service planning continues to go well as Pastor Chris, Pastor Doug, and I are in regular communication with each other to insure that the most important activity in our week is done with excellence and in good order.

Senior Shepherds – The Senior Shepherds group continues to meet each month. Plans are being made for the May and June events. Please contact me if you are interested in participating in this group.

Would you like to participate in the music ministry? If interested, please don’t hesitate to talk to me after services, call, or drop me an e-mail. We would love to have you participate.

Pastoral Care - It is a joy and privilege to continue to help with the shut-in and hospital visits, as well as other pastoral care opportunities.

Student Ministry News Nick Arnold-Director of Student Ministry [email protected]

Current Activities: We recently celebrated the First Communion of about 30 young people!

These students are now participating in the Sacrament of Holy Commun-ion and having their faith strengthened through this meal.

We are looking forward to celebrating the Rite of Confirmation with about 15 young people on May 24!

We have 19 students signed up to participate in Summer Serve in June. This annual event involves serving the community with several other LCMS churches. This year, Mt. Calvary is hosting it. We’re looking forward to this event! Summer Serve is June 11-14.

Sign-ups for Camp Eagle are still coming in. We have filled all of our mid-dle school spots and have started a waiting list and still have openings for our high school session. Camp for high school is July 13-18 and the middle school session is August 1-4.

Continuing Education: I am participating in an online coaching program with a former-pastor-

turned-consultant. The program includes weekly emails and monthly Skype conversations, challenging me to grow as a leader. These past few lessons have been on practicing well and “beta testing” your work.

I am currently reading a book called Searching for Sunday, which is part mem-oir and part reflection on reaching Millennials. Another book I recently finished was called Tribes, which was about creating community around a singular cause. The book was written for businesses, non-profits, and any organization.

Thank you for your prayer support, your encouragement, and your financial sup-port! You make it possible for Shepherd to provide a place of refuge to teenagers and for teenagers to multiply places of refuge with their friends.

Off to see a movie!

Frankly Financial

Tim Eickstead-Director of Operations [email protected]

You can always tell around my house when a storm is coming. In fact, it is even possible to know the size of the storm and never watch the weather forecast! We have four collies and one is an extreme worrier. She starts pac-ing the house about two hours prior to the arrival of the bad weather. During the last weekend in April this year when two major storm fronts passed through our area, she was very aware that the weather was about to change. Our collie Aubrey began pacing the house way before there was any rain, thunder or lighting. She knew that it was coming, and boy was her awareness correct! When the storms were done, our house had many branches knocked down, leaves all over and even a little water damage, just like Shepherd’s campus. Life sometimes gives us the courtesy of forewarning when things are going to get tough. Once in a while the rough spots in our lives which need repair just sneak up on us. At Shepherd, we do a decent job of responding to both. In our annual Ministry Plans (the financial budgets for the church, school and childcare) we have always aside funds to help with emergencies. In recent Ministry Plans, there have also been funds allocated for Maintenance and Mod-ernization. This category is designed to help with the upkeep and improvements necessary to keep our congrega-tion’s property in good working order. Many projects have been accomplished over the past 3 to 5 years such as: the renovation of the Worship Center, a lift to reach the second floor in the Worship Center building, renovations to restrooms in the school and childcare building, repainting the lobby, upgrades to the landscaping around the school building, tiling the school and childcare office area, and many more. These projects will continue to occur as funds are available. In the coming months we hope to restripe the parking lot, repaint the outside of the Dove house , replace and upgrade several doors in the gym building, repaint the gym, and resod the grass area outside the church offices. The Board of Directors has a five year plan which they are working through to keep the property at Shepherd in good condition. We praise God that He has blessed us with such a beautiful place of refuge from which we can go into the world and multiply places of refuge! It is our desire to do our best to maintain it so those who are ministered to through the church, school and childcare will benefit from the use of this gift from God! There are many people who give weekly of their time to paint, maintain gardens, make repairs and upgrades – all of which are a big assistance to the work of our paid maintenance staff. If you have a desire to assist with any of the landscaping, maintenance or modernization projects which we need to accomplish at Shepherd, please contact me. We will gladly help you find an area where you can use your God given talents in the maintenance and moderniza-tion of the property or facilities. I can be reached at [email protected] or by phone, 210-415-6588. May God continue to bless the work we all do to use the gifts He has given us to carry out the work of His Holy Spirit! “Built On Christ”

Rev. Doug L. Bielefeldt-Pastor to the School [email protected]

Our school theme for this year has been “Built on

Christ” (Acts 4:11-12), and what a year of building it

has been! The cornerstone sets the starting place for

construction. With Christ as our cornerstone, we

began building our school year on August 21, and the

construction project will be complete on May 29.

We thank God for our 35th year of sharing Christ as

our firm foundation. Here are some of school minis-

try “stones” that were laid in place during the school

year:

September: International Pot Luck and Talent Show recognizing the diversity of our ministry and showcasing our many talents. A birthday party was also held in which families gathered for hotdogs and games prior to the Sat-urday evening service.

October: Our 2nd annual Trunk or Treat event was held on October 25, followed by worship in the gym after-wards and a great turnout!

November: On Veterans Day, numerous SHLC veterans visited with our students in the classroom sharing their stories of faith and service. A Family Advent Event was held on November 23.

December: Our annual Shoebox Gift Wrapping Party was held on December 12 following the 10:45 a.m. ser-vice. On Christmas Eve, approximately 100 school children attended our special Children’s Service that included a live nativity.

January: As part of Lutheran Schools Week, we had an International Open House. Each classroom researched a different country and decorated their classroom with projects. The chapel praise team, comprised of Jr. High students from our school, helped lead our Saturday evening worship service. School students were invited to participate in a special blessing and song at the close of our Sunday morning services.

February: Our annual School Baptism service was held on February 2 and eight children were baptized into Christ. For Valentine’s Day, school and church parents were treated to a “Date Night” after worshipping at our Saturday evening service.

March: On March 21, our First Grade students sang songs in Spanish in our Saturday evening worship ser-vice. On March 28, families gathered to make Resurrection Eggs in preparation for Holy Week.

April: A Children’s Easter Celebration was held on Easter Sunday with a special devotion followed by an Easter Egg Hunt. Approximately 50 school children attended this event.

May: A Mother/Daughter Brunch was held on May 9. Our National Junior Honor Society sponsored a “Kick Out Cancer” kickball tournament on May 15. On May 16, our 1st & 2nd grade students performed their “Wax Mu-seum” in conjunction with our Saturday evening service. On May 29, our 8th Grade Graduation provides a time to bid farewell to the 41 students graduating as the class of 2015.

Sharing Jesus on the Border and in Mexico

Rev. Gary Martin [email protected]

Cristo El Salvador, Del Rio, TX Spring 2015 Sharing Jesus on the Border and in Mexico

The Lord is risen! He is risen indeed! And because He lives you and I also shall live as He has promised to each of His disciples. We have a new Bible class of children in a different area of Cd. Acuña, Mexico. Our teacher is Miss Carmelita Armendariz who teaches the class Sat-urdays out of her small home in Mexico (Cd. Acuña is the name of our border city). The class has been studying for about 2 months now, and we ask you to join us in joy and thankfulness to our Lord for this wonderful outreach opportunity for us to teach those 3 boys and 3 girls in that class.

Cristian Morales has completed his first year of studies in the Hispanic Department of Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. We have made application for his two year vicarage which is to begin June 1st of this year. God willing he will serve his vicar-age here at Cristo El Salvador mission with an emphasis on our outreach work in Mexico during the week. The reason for the two year vicarage instead of one year is the program al-lows Cris to serve Cristo El Salvador, Del Rio, TX, in the spring of 2015.

You may not know about our English as a second language class that meets in Del Rio on Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 p.m. We have 4 students from that class who are quite regu-larly attending Bible classes and worship with us now. In fact, in the English class now we are using the Beginners Bible in English as our lesson guide. We open and close with prayer, and the students are very attentive to the Bible study each Monday and Tuesday. There are about 9 students currently in the class. Three of them are members of our congregation in Del Rio and they do a super job of welcoming the students. Thank you for your prayers and support which are very encouraging to us in our mission outreach! Confirmation on May 24 for 17 eighth graders I am awaiting word from Candice Dominguez when she returns from Haiti to learn how I may be of service to our partners there when Shepherd’s team returns in July. There is a possibility I will be teaching a seminar at the Seminary there, as well as leading a seminar along with Amy for the seminarians and their wives. Along with Nick Arnold and Nick McNabb, we are planning how to restart Sunday evening services with a gather-ing that is specifically geared toward outreach and service to the un-churched and de-churched. On a personal note, hopefully by the time you read this I will have been promoted to Captain in the SAFD. Thank you again for all your prayers and support.
