Key Club Car Wash

On the beautiful

day of April 26th from

9a.m. to 1p.m Millburn

High School’s Key Club

had a successful, free car

wash in order to raise

money and awareness for

the Eliminate Project.

Many people did not un-

derstand why the car

wash was free. When we

explained that it was to

raise awareness about the

Eliminate Project and that

all funds would go to-

wards helping cure

mothers and their ba-

bies they generously

gave donations. Our

spirited Key Club was

able to raise around

$400!!! In addition to

washing cars we sold

delicious baked goods

and lollipops. Not sur-

prisingly, I had a great

time dancing with post-

ers to attract passing

cars, washing cars, rais-

ing awareness for Elimi-

nate and spraying my

friends with water. Key

Club events are always

great to raise aware-

ness in our community

and meet members in

the club.

KIWANIS KARNIVAL

On Arc Day local

Key Clubbers gathered

at the Livingston Kiwanis

Karnival. Arc Day is a

day dedicated to all

children and adults with

intellectual and devel-

opmental disabilities

and in the morning the

carnival was open and free to those

very people. There were rides, games,

and, most importantly, food. We

worked alongside Livingston Key Club-

bers at the

funnel cake

stand pow-

dering,

packaging,

and distrib-

uting the

funnel cakes

that Mr. and Mrs. Nevola made. The

weather was beautiful and all the peo-

ple were so nice. Even when people

were ordering 10 funnel cakes at a time

it was still fun to work with Key Clubbers

we just met. It was truly a great way for

us to get closer to Livingston Key Club

and it certainly helped further unite the

clubs. Events like

these with clubs

outside out own

district remind us

that the Kiwanis

Family truly is a

family, with thou-

sands of like-

minded people working to better the

world one funnel cake at a time. Over-

all it was a great experience and I know

I will be returning next year to help such

a great cause even if it means I’ll get

powdered sugar in my hair!

Service Abroad!

Smile Train

Smile Train is an annual event that our Key Club holds every year throughout April

and May. During the month of April, students, teachers, and family members could pre-order

packs of chocolate chip cookies from Key Clubbers. Then, in early May, Key Clubbers gathered

together for a day or two of making delicious batter, baking, and

packaging tasty cookies (and eating quite a few). The following Mon-

day, Key Clubbers delivered the cookies to those who ordered them.

All of the money goes to Smile Train, an organization that raises money

for surgeries for children who have cleft palates. These children are of-

ten rejected by their families because of their ap-

pearances and have difficulty eating and drink-

ing. This year, Key Club managed to raise enough

money for one surgery! Also this year, we intro-

duced the option of gluten free cookies, which allowed three more peo-

ple to enjoy our baked treats. Those of us who helped out with this event

had lots of fun, and we hope to see you all selling, baking, or both next

year.

Regional Training Conference

I was fortunate

enough to go to the Re-

gional Training Confer-

ence. To be honest it was

everything I hoped it

would be and more. The

thing I loved most about it

was the sense of commu-

nity and belonging. Having

multiple schools come to-

gether for the same goal is a fulfilling

process. Not only the concept in gen-

eral, but the way the RTC was run was

superb. At the RTC the numerous

amounts of ice-breakers allowed for

great inter-club conversation. It felt just

as though a group of friends was hang-

ing out, and less like a formal meeting.

Having open minded conversations

throughout different clubs meant that

ideas spread efficiently. Not only that,

but the brief but informative seminars

allowed for information to be easily

communicated. Personally, the semi-

nar which I found most informative was

the one allocated for just Editors. This

was helpful because I was able to learn

how to do my part and overall, help

the entirety of Key Club. There were

separate seminars for all given positions

and I thought this was the most benefi-

cial. These seminars help all Key Club

members from General Members to

Presidents. All in all, the Spring RTC was

definitely a success. I cannot wait to go

again next year!

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

I created the

idea of Battle of the

Bands about a year

ago and now with the

forces of Key Club I

am finally able to

complete my idea.

The event is on Friday

May 30th from 7-9 pm

in the MHS Main Gym.

Tickets are $10 at the

door or $7 outside of

lunch and all pro-

ceeds are going to

The NJ Coalition

Against Human Traf-

ficking.

There will be food and

teacher judges, but

depending on how

loud the crowd cheers

the winner will be cho-

sen! The winning band

will get free studio time

at So.I.Heard of Music

in Millburn. There will

be about four bands

performing from in

and out of

Millburn.

Human

Trafficking is Modern

Day Slavery, and

there are approxi-

mately 27 million

slaves in the world

right now. "New Jer-

sey is a prime loca-

tion for Human Traf-

ficking because it is

a major national

and international

transportation and

shipping corridor. It is

a rapidly growing

criminal industry sec-

ond only to drug

dealing and equal in

scope to arms deal-

ing. Human Traffick-

ing involves the use

of force, fraud and/

or coercion for the

purpose of

sexual exploi-

tation or

forced labor.

The U.S. State De-

partment estimates

that 600,000-800,000

people are traf-

ficked in the United

States annually." (NJ

Coalition Website)

I hope that through

this event I can raise

more awareness

about Modern Day

Slavery as it is over-

looked when it is a

big issue. I want to

create a comforta-

ble environment of

discussion about this

problem and what

4 SIGNS YOU MIGHT FERING

FROM “POST-DCON

SYNDROME

we can do to help

it. Everyone should come out

to this event to support Hu-

man Trafficking Prevention

and great music from some

awesome bands !
