2014 RETREAT WRAP-UP

Alice Goldfuss, 2014 Chairman

Well, the 27th annual GCDA retreat, Catch Spring Fever, is over

and the committee has already begun planning the 2015 retreat,

“It’s a Shore Thing.” I would like to thank all who made the re-

treat a successful weekend of fun, painting, and getting together with old and new

friends.

Special thanks to the following:Special thanks to the following:Special thanks to the following:Special thanks to the following:

* The Retreat Committee, for countless hours of planning and working. You

ladies are remarkable!

* All the attendees, 63 in all. About half were GCDA members, others traveled

from Nevada, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan. You stayed, painted and

bought raffle tickets, making the Retreat a financial success.

* Everyone who brought or donated to the Basket Raffle, those who supported

the teachers who had sales tables and The Cupboard that brought goodies to be

purchased.

* The teachers, quite a few of whom are GCDA members, who were top notch

again this year.

* The folks at Higher Ground where the Retreat is held. They are very special

and always go out of their way to help us make the event successful.

I hope all reading this article will seriously think about attending the 2015 It’s a

Shore Thing retreat. It will be very affordable, you will learn new techniques, en-

joy excellent meals and have a fabulous weekend.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

Linda Kohler, VP Membership

GCDA membership is currently 53 members strong!! In the few years that I per-

sonally have been a member, it is evident that we have the best members of any

painting organization around! We are made up of many different skill levels, as

well as many different painting strengths and preferences. But we are also quick

to share our talents and cheer on the accomplishments of others. And we are just

plain NICE!

We have added 5 new members in the last 6 months! In case you missed the

meetings where they were introduced, a recap of their information appears on the

next page.

Please think about who you know that might be interested in joining us! We all

have friends and relatives who have admired our work and wished they could

create things, too. Well, they can! Please invite people you know to join us for

one of our upcoming meetings! There is no pressure to join, but when they see

it’s not as difficult as they thought it might be, and how much fun our meetings

are, they might get hooked, like all of us!

Ann Boren – Ann was a member for many years, beginning her membership when the retreat was in Ox-

ford and meetings were in Western Hills! She remembers having the Christmas party as her house dur-

ing those years. It became more difficult for her to attend meetings, but she never stopped painting! She

was part of a group of painters who met for dinner and then went to her house to paint for around 15

years. She ran into Anne Dick teaching at Hobby Lobby and decided to return to us. She lives in Naples,

Florida for a few months of the year and also belongs to the Naples Decorative Artists. Welcome back!

Michelle Kohler – Michelle has been painting for around a year or so, but has always been interested in

all types of crafts. She graduated one year ago from Xavier University with a degree in Marketing and

currently works at Staples. During her senior year, she and her roommates would have “paint-in” eve-

nings every now and then and she became hooked! Michelle’s skill level continues to increase, but says

shading is the hardest thing to do! She likes lots of color and does a great job with lettering! Welcome,

Michelle!

Emily Neff - Emily is our newest member, joining in February. She is a college graduate with an Art de-

gree and was an art teacher for Finneytown schools at one time. She now leads art classes for Spring-

field Township Art Council, and creates all of her own original designs. Emily works primarily in acrylics

and likes to do multi media. She is the Art and Wine Wednesday teacher who conducts canvas painting

classes for beginners every other Wednesday in the same room where we have our meetings! Hopefully

we can sign her up to teach a class for us after a meeting sometime soon!! Welcome, Emily!

Sandy Sutterfield – Sandy has been painting for quite a few years and is a meticulous painter! Her

Christmas ornaments are beautiful, and one of her specialties. She works in the Treasurer’s office at

Northwest Local Schools, and also runs a pet rescue out of her home. She often spends time on the

weekends at various PetSmart locations with dogs and cats up for adoption. Her love of animals also

shows in her painting, as she creates wonderful animal-themed items. Welcome, Sandy!

Lee Ann Schaney –Lee Ann reports that she grew up in an artistic household with her first art supplies

provided by the Tooth Fairy! She earned degrees in Deaf Education and Elementary Education and be-

gan volunteer work in deaf theater as a voice actor and artist with St. Rita students. Lee Ann worked as

the Deaf Educator at Lakota City Schools and then taught deaf students at the Princeton City Schools.

During that time, she became involved in school staff musicals. Following that, Lee Ann went on to per-

form and paint for Cincinnati's community theater. After the Hearing Impaired program was disbanded,

she taught normal hearing children for 27 years . Lee Ann retired in 2013 after 31 years in education.

Now she says she is learning to paint and create for herself again, including working with paints, water

colors, pencils, chalk, and any art she can learn from artist friends, including the members of GCDA. Lee

Ann cites her greatest accomplishment as the international adoption of her daughter, MaKenna Kate,

eleven years ago in China. Welcome Lee Ann!

ROLLIN’ ROLLIN’ ROLLIN’ !!ROLLIN’ ROLLIN’ ROLLIN’ !!ROLLIN’ ROLLIN’ ROLLIN’ !!ROLLIN’ ROLLIN’ ROLLIN’ !! Here are the TOP TEN REASONS to Take the GCDA Bus

to Columbus on Thursday, August 14th for a

SHOPPING SPREE AT THE HOOT TRADE SHOW:

(Sadly, this particular bus was not available.)

REASON NUMBER: 10) What is more fun than bonding with friends on a Road Trip! Membership in SDP or GCDA is not re-

quired for this, so you can bring anyone you like! Bring your Art Students! Your Fan Club! Your Besties!

9) Refreshments are provided during the trip! Can’t have a worthy Road Trip without eats!

8) Enjoy dinner out on the return trip home! No ending an otherwise great day in a kitchen! (NOTE: Cost of

dinner is out-of-pocket—not included in the Trip Fee.)

7) No Columbus Road Construction Headaches. They still exist. Instead of aspirin, just take the bus!

6) Express delivery right to the door of the Convention Center, so there’s no long walks and no need for GPS or

maps. And when it’s over, the bus will pick you up from the Convention Center. What could be easier!

5) Lots of storage space in the bus cargo-hold for all your purchases, large and small. Carpoolers have to con-

sider available trunk space when deciding on size or quantity of purchases. Worst case scenario: strapping one

of the passengers to the top of the car in order to make room for trade floor treasures!

4) No parking expenses and no competing with other convention goers for convenient parking space. So many

simultaneous activities at the Hyatt promise that nearby parking spaces will be in short supply.

3) No hauling your purchases to a car parked somewhere on a lot or in a garage. After a successful day of

shopping, everything will be loaded onto the bus for you and there will be plenty of space for all your treasures.

This is especially wonderful if the weather is hot, humid, windy or wet.

2) NO WAITING IN LINE TO GET YOUR TRADE SHOW ADMISSION BOOKS AND ARM BANDS! You

will receive these in ADVANCE! (NOTE: Admission to the Trade Show is $7.00 and is not included as part of

the Bus Trip Fee. This amount is to be paid in advance along with your bus fee.)

1) And the NUMBER ONE REASON to take the GCDA Bus to the HOOT Trade Show on August 14 is . . . . . .

ALL OF THESE BENEFITS COST A MERE $25.00 - plus the usual $7 trade show fee! Compare that to the

costs of gas and parking! You may be tired after a good day of trade show shopping, but you won’t be stressed

out by the driving and parking. You might even sleep on the return trip! PRICELESS!!!!

The bus will pick up riders at a central location, a location on the east side of Cincinnati and a central location

in Western Hills. At this time, the first departure time is set for 8:00 am with departure from the Hyatt at 4:00

pm. More details will be forthcoming. Meanwhile, for a GOOD TIME, CALL ALICE! Alice Goldfuss, that

is, and ask her to add you to the list. Call 513-598-1819 or email [email protected].
