Resourcing the New National CurriculumLibrary Services for Schools are pleased to announce we will be ready to support schools with books for the new curriculum from September. Over the last 6 months we have been researching the publishing market and ordering titles in preparation. It will take at least another year before the publishers start providing a wider range especially with the new history topics so if you would like to know how well resourced a subject area is before you study it, then please do not hesitate to get in touch. Stock is being ordered in advance of publication and in multiple copies to ensure we receive the books in time for inclusion in your Autumn term’s topic boxes. To order your boxes for the Autumn term please send in your requests by Friday 18th July.

We have also compiled recommended booklists of recently published titles (or are due to be published soon). The lists can be found on our website. cumbria.gov.uk/libraries/schoolslibserv

In this feature you will get to see a snap shot of the County Council employees who work hard to deliver the best possible training courses and services to Cumbrian schools.

In this issue we will ‘Get to Know … Matt Ellis, Outdoor Learning & Educational Visits Adviser

What are the main aspects of your role?

I am the County Outdoor and Experiential Learning Adviser responsible for Outdoor Adventure Activities and Educational Visits. We introduced the online notification and approval system called Evolve in September 2011 and I am delighted to report that since that time schools in Cumbria have uploaded over 20,000 visits onto the system. Schools submit Level 2 visits abroad, residential and adventure activities for approval. However, the vast majority of visits on the system are Level 1 visits which shows that schools are electing to use the system to manage all their visits.

What are the best and worst things about your job?

The best is easy, schools often send me details of their visits with pictures capturing the fun that the young people have while involved in high quality outdoor learning experiences. We’ve had primary children multi-pitch rock climbing, special needs groups sea kayaking off the West Coast of Scotland in tandem sea kayaks and expeditions going all over the world. There is also some really exciting opportunities with the Duke of Edinburgh Award, John Muir Award and Forest Schools. The worst is easy too, not being able to go on all the great visits!

How long have you worked for Cumbria County Council and what made you choose a career here?

I was surprised myself when I realised that I’ve worked for the County Council for nearly ten years now! I have been very lucky to be the Outdoor Education Adviser in Cumbria, home of the Lake District National Park. Not a difficult choice really?

What has been a highlight for you within your time working for the County Council?

Many of the Headteachers, Educational Visits Coordinators and Visit Leaders have become personal friends and they continue to support me as much as I try to support them.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Well, I would normally say I like walking with my wife Greta, cycling and canoeing and until recently I was the Chair of Cumbria Canoeists. However, I recently became a Grandad to Alfie ten months and Matthew three months and so now I change a lot of nappies and help out with babysitting!
