Held at the Clubhouse

(Manager’s Report continued from the cover) Safety CommitteeBy Jim Snyder

The Safety Committee met on 4/4/13 with nine memberspresent. The committee is looking into solar power speed-ing signs. Dave Chaney gave a report to the committee onsolar power speed signs; the cost was $4,000 for a pair. These speed signs could enhance our security by allowingthe monitoring of speed with a warning to vehicles; thiscould help slow speeders down. Radar could continue tobe used to control speeding in more areas of the communi-ty and we could move the solar speed warnings throughoutour community.

In addition, we have vendors who are not following theBCPO guidelines regarding cones (size) and cone place-ment away from the trucks so that they are clearly seen.

The committee talked about walkers on the boulevard.Walkers should use safety vests so they can be easily seen.

Lastly, the committee discussed a form of photo ID for resi-dents to help stop people who are suspended from usingthe facilities.

Brookridge Memorial Day ceremonies will be on Monday May 27starting at 11 a.m. at the Clubhouse. We will have Central HighSchool Navy JROTC Drill Team and the Young Marines, refresh-ments will be provided.

Happy Mothers Day Sunday May 12 and Remember our Troopseveryday…

MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATION

On Monday, May 27th our community will honor its veteransat the Annual Memorial Day Observance.

The outdoor activities at the clubhouse will commence at11:00 a.m. with a welcome by the Master of Ceremonies byour BCPO President, followed by the Raising of the Colorsand the National Anthem, as well as a balloon release inmemory of our fallen veterans.

All Gave Some. Some Gave All.

God Bless America

RV CompoundBy Jim Snyder

The committee had their walk through on 4/10/13 with onlyfour helpers there. We can use more help. We found a fewexpired plates (yellow stickers) and some site numberswere missing, which we put on.

There are also a few units that have not moved in months. On the May walk thru I will note the site numbers for yourinformation. We have a number of snowbirds who havealready left for the summer.

We also ask that if you change your phone number toplease go to the office and change it in case we have to callyou with problems.

Lastly, someone is letting their dog run around the com-pound and not picking up after their dog. Please stop thisas the compound is not considered a dog run.

Crime WatchBy John Scalf

The Sherriff's office states there is no current increase incrime in our area at this time. They have increased trafficstops for various traffic violations, so please obey the lawsand rules of the road when out in your vehicle. This extrafocus on traffic stops has allowed the Sherriff to catch anumber of persons with warrants, drugs on them and vari-ous other crime history they may have while in a vehicle onthe road.

On behalf of the members, I wish to thank several organiza-tions for their recent donations to Crime Watch for the repair& maintenance of our golf cart. Thank you to "Line Dancing"also "Crafty Stitchers" and "Helping Hands". This means somuch that we can help each other in Brookridge as it onlymakes us more united with each other. The Crime Watchmembers are always willing to patrol on their on time , theevents in Brookridge. It is important to us to keep a watchfuleye on peoples property here in Brookridge. Because of this, anyone can attend events at the Clubhouse and not worryabout their vehicles being bothered in the lot.

If you notice your Crime Watch members out in the commu-nity, say hello or thank you for being here. It means a lot tohear any appreciation. Please stay safe, aware of your sur-roundings and as always, if you see anything suspicious, callthe Sherriff at 911 or 754-6830.

Mildred Foster By Charles “Chuck” Aftosmes

Everyone has heard of the energizer bunny. The batterynever runs out of power but keeps on running. We have aperson in Brookridge who reminds us of the energizerbunny and her name is Mildred “Millie” Foster. She is anactive member of the community who thoroughly enjoyshelping others.

One of the many activities Millie is involved with is the aquaexercise program. She is presently the Aqua Exerciseinstructor at the pool where she has been given lessons forover ten years. She believes that aqua exercise is an effec-tive way to physical fitness and that non-swimmers can par-ticipate as well as people with physical liabilities. She saysthat the doctors have found aqua exercising decreases thestress to the hips, knees, and ankle joints. Experts say thatone half hour of water walking is equal to two hours of walk-ing on land. Millie has two degrees in health and safety ofswimming pools. In fact, she wrote the first rules for the poolin 1981 which at that time had no monitors, no admissioncards and as she put it “no order’”

In addition to the aqua exercise program, Millie is a chartermember of the Brookridge Tennis Club. Millie was instru-mental in saving the tennis courts from becoming a parkinglot, years ago because the courts were in such deplorablecondition. To this day she plays an active role with the clubattending all of the tennis club meetings but no longer plays.Previously she was a tennis instructor for the club and alsotaught beginning tennis at the Pasco Hernando College inBrooksville and at the Bob Foster Tennis School in NewYork.

Millie has also taught yoga and published a yoga chart forteachers and pupils. The Hatha Yoga Chart is used in exer-cise classes even today. She said that the person who hadthe most influence upon her in this area was a yoga teachername Lilgas from Toronto, Canada. She encouraged Millieto teach yoga. Millie taught over five hundred women atadult education classes and at the University of Buffalo.

Millie also has been quite active in the community doing vol-unteer work. She worked for the former BrookridgePotterfield Fire Department collecting past due accountsand passing out “Vials of Life”. She is a member of St.Anthony’s church and an original member of St. FrancisCabrini Church where she and Gene were two of a group ofseven who started the St. Vincent DePaul Society in thisarea. She was a greeter and her husband was an usher atthe church for many years.

Millie and Gene are the parents of six children and have fif-teen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. At ninety-four years of age Millie continues to have an active role withthe tennis club and continues to instruct the aqua exerciseprogram. Her philosophy of life is to continue to help all thepeople maintain good health in the Aqua class.

GOLF CARTSThere are over 800 golf carts currently registered inBrookridge. Of that 800 plus, it has come to our attentionthere are numerous owners/operators who are not aware ofthe “rules of the road” and also others who are not aware ofBrookridge’s Rules and Regulations.

All golf carts are subject to Florida Statute Chapter 316; thesame as for automobiles. For example, you must obey allposted speed limits, park only in designated parking areasand come to a FULL STOP at STOP SIGNS.

Article IX, Item 3 states that “All persons operating a golfcart on community property must be at least sixteen (16)years of age.”

All owners/operators of golf carts should become familiarwith Article IX of the Rules and Regulations (page 29 of 38).

Please obey all laws and Rules and Regulations so thatBrookridge will remain a safe place to live.

a. Election Committee Voting Results of the ProposedDeed Restriction Change re: 55 Plus- Secretary Sajdakthanked the Election Committee volunteers and ChairpersonMary Sweeney for their efforts during the vote counting.Voting results: IN FAVOR: 1,377 AGAINST: 404 TOTALVOTES: 1,781

Round Table:President Starr: Stated the membership passed the 55Plus Deed Restriction in excess of the required 2/3 approval(77%). The Deed Restriction will go into effect upon record-ing the amendment with the county. President Starrannounced a meeting regarding road certification would beheld on 3/7/13. President Starr encouraged residents to readthe minutes of the 2/5/13 Informational meeting that will bepublished in the News & Views as they are very informativeregarding 55 plus. President Starr read the attorney’sresponse to the two questions posed at the 2/27/13 meeting:

1. Current owners of a home under age 55, grandfa-thered in. However, in two years the owners (still under 55)choose to upgrade their house. They pull the older house outand bring in a new house. Same lot, same address, sameUBL account number, same yard, etc. All ACC guidelinesand requirements are met. Are they still grandfathered? Yes,this is their home and the vacancy during transition does notremove the grandfather status.

2. Current owners under the age of 55 of a home with ayoung handicapped child. As the handicapped youngstergrows older a larger house is needed. The owners say thatthe ADA will intervene and allow them to move to a large

house, even if they are not 55 years of age. Comment?Any rulings? ADA has no application to private property. That said. IF a larger home is required to accommodate thehandicap, Fair Housing Act would require that we make rea-sonable accommodations, which in this case might includeallowing the move with the grandfathered status. Theywould need a letter from a doctor that the Association wouldkeep in a confidential file (not part of the official records thatare available to other owners).

President Starr thanked the Administration office employeesfor all their hard work regarding 55 plus.

Director Walters: No comment.

The volunteers are trained through theSheriff’s Department, learn CPR, how to help assist in timesof an emergency, etc. CERT received an $8,000 grant andpurchased items for the community (medical supplies, cots, pop up canopies etc.) The clubhouse is not a hurricaneshelter. If the clubhouse is left undamaged, it can serve asa secondary shelter after a disaster. Homeowners whocould not return to their homes would be able to seek shel-ter for approximately three days at the clubhouse. The pro-gram makes no money and is only to help Brookridge resi-dents.

Comets are ice bodies that swing wildly close to the sun andthen disappear into the extreme blackness at the outer edgeof our solar system. Looking like white smudges or floatingcotton balls, comets have historically been believed to bewarnings, omens, and signs of change. Comets can havetwo tails: a straight long bluish ion tail blown by the solar windand a curved whitish dust tail blown by the solar magneticfield. These two tails always point away from the sun.

Comets Have Two Distinct Tails When Close to the Sun

Today, comets are sought-after stellar sights by amateurastronomers, including the Brookridge Astronomy Club.Braving the cold biting wind, we spotted comet Pan-STARRSflying low on the western horizon at sunset in mid March.

Comet Pan-STARR

Comets are best viewed through binoculars during darkmoon-less nights. Finding one can be a challenge if you donot know what to look for. Below is a picture of what you maysee when looking at a faint comet through your binoculars.

Comets Are Typically Faint White Blobs

Comet brightness is totally unpredictable. Those believed tobe big may turn out to be duds and vice versa. Anothercomet is scheduled to fly by in late December, 2013. Cometo our next Club meeting to find out more about this cometand other regular visitors in our neighboring skies.

Here we are into spring and I hope everybody had a niceEaster. As you travel up and down Brookridge Blvd, and tothe clubhouse keep your eyes open. The Beautification Committee has been hard at work. Iwould like to take one moment to thank every member ofthis committee that was out helping to beautify the medianand work around the fountains. I am sorry that I could notbe with them due to illness. I hope to be back working soon.

There were seven yards of mulch delivered plus two palletsof bagged mulch. Most of the west side has been complet-ed and the same for the north side of Brookridge Blvd. Bythe time you read this message the entire project will becompleted. We will be losing some of our helpers as they gonorth for the summer.

Some of the things discussed at the meeting were the typesof plants that could be put in and take the heat and the frostduring the year. Also we had discussed putting in some bot-tle brush trees. All of this takes money and our funds havenot been ample. If you would like to donate a tree or a bushin memory or honor of a loved one, this can be done, Thishas been done before.

Once again we are asking if someone has an old flatbedtrailer they are not using and would like to donate it to theBeautification Committee, we would appreciate having it.

Hernando County is warning us of mosquito problems.Control is important, any waste water where they may layeggs should be emptied into the ground.

Memorial Day is coming and Beautification will be puttingout the American Flags throughout the community. I wouldlike to see everyone in our community fly a flag in honor ofthose that gave so much. Many giving all.

May brings us to the end of our current season. By andlarge, we’ve had a good year. Our greatest challenge wasand is getting help. One cannot expect a club to functionwith only three or four people doing most of the work. Weare extremely grateful to all those who did step up.

Many thanks to Milly Brough and her committee for the greatjob done at the Bingo Bash. We had 165 attendees and ourprofit was $2,258.00.

A special thanks to Lillian and Howard Keller, Scott Rooneyand all their workers for a successful Tuesday Nite bingo.Their hard work and dedication made for a profitable year.

Scholarship Chairperson Jeanne Smith and her committeehave worked diligently to choose 7 finalists from the 22applications received. The scholarship awards will be pre-sented at 7:30 p.m. after the May 20th members meeting.Thank you for all your hard work Jeannie.

PLEASE NOTE: The May 20th members meeting will startat 6 p.m. At this time, we will decide how and to whom wewill disburse our monies. This is a VERY IMPORTANTmeeting. Please plan to attend. After all, this is your moneywe are giving away.

We have a very serious dilemma. At this time, we do nothave a complete Board of Directors. At our March meetingAlice Hershberger and Arlene Malin came forward to serveas Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. Article IV; SectionI of our By-Laws states that we must have a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. We cannot afford theluxury of waiting until October hoping someone will comeforward. The future of the Brookridge Woman’s Club is injeopardy and that, my fellow members, is a cold, hard fact.

Our next dance will be Saturday, May 4, 2013, at 7:30 PM,with Just Us Duo playing for our dancing pleasure. The colorfor this dance will, of course, be pastels!!! Or whateveryou’re comfortable wearing! There will be ice and coffeeavailable all evening and donuts will be served after the50/50, at about 9:30. There will be tickets sold at the door, but to be sure, call Dot and your ticket (s) will be waiting atthe back table when you arrive. If you have a group, it’simperative to make that call to Dot so you can all be at thesame table: we don‘t want anyone disappointed. Tickets willbe held until 7:15, then available to be sold on a first comefirst serve basis, at the door.

*Note:1. There are still some Memberships available; there areseveral different plans, so don’t get left out. Call Dot at 597-0723. We are running an ad in the local newspapers, sodon’t delay, call Dot now! Our fiscal year runs from March2013 to Feb 2014.

2. If you are a member and for whatever reason you can notattend, take a minute and call Dot to cancel; she will handlethe cancellation right over the phone. This will give someoneelse a chance to sit at your vacated place at the table. Wehate seeing empty tables when a quick phone call can elim-inate this problem. Thank you for being a good neighbor!

*Members: If you have not picked up your 2013 MembershipPackets yet, they will be at the back where you will see Dot.If that doesn't work for you, call Dot and make an arrange-ment with her that will work for you.
