Where has the time gone? By all accounts, this has been a great year for the Raider community. Please be sure to check out some of our many activities coming up. Our annual musical is coming up this weekend and all of our mu- sic programs will be taking place during the month of May. In addition, we are having one of the most successful athletic seasons I can remember and anticipate many of our teams will go deep into the playoffs. Prom will be held on Saturday May 25 th and all of our awards assemblies will take place on May 31. Yearbooks will also be distributed to all students on the 31 st . For the parents of graduates, all of our end of year activi- ties and dates are listed on our web page under the “Our School” tab. Please note that the senior trip is slated for May 28 th. Graduation will be held on June 10 th at 8 AM on the front lawn. Our final exams will be administered the last week of school according the following schedule: June 3, 1 st & 2 nd blocks; June 4, 7 th & 8 th blocks, June 5, 3 rd & 4 th blocks, and June 6 th , 5 th block. Dismissal each exam day will be at 1:30. As we come to the close of this academic school year, I want to thank parents, students, and staff for all their hard work in making this another banner year for LCHS. Our PTSA, under the capable leadership of Peter Flynn, has pro- vided a great connection between the parents and the school along with fantastic support to the school. Together, every- one has collectively worked toward providing a great atmos- phere for the students to learn, thrive, and be fulfilled. May everyone finish this year strong and have a wonderful summer. School starts back on September 3 rd . Sincerely yours, Bill Oblas

Guidance News

Welcome

Dear Parents and Students,

By now I am sure that you have looked at your student’s 3rd quarter report

card. Please continue to encourage your child to strive during the 4th and fi-

nal quarter. Ending a school year strongly helps students with their cumula-

tive GPA. The guidance department will continue working on schedules for

next year, AP exams, SOL tests, scholarships, and graduation status with the

LCHS students this month.

There will be an opportunity for summer school this year. In the past, many

students have taken advantage of summer school to get caught up or even to

get ahead. Please contact the guidance department with any questions con-

cerning summer school.

Printable Version of High School Summer School Information

Seniors will complete a survey in May that will provide the counselors with

their post-secondary plans along with any scholarships they received so far.

Finally, as the 2013-2014 course selection process closes out this month,

please continue to work with the teachers to make sure that your student’s

schedule is appropriate. Increasing the communication this year will help

make the transition into next year easier.

Spring is a great time to visit

college campuses!

There are many college campus Open Houses in the spring.

Check out the college website under Admissions and look

for the “visit schedule” to register. While on your visit

make an appointment to see a professor or director in your

area of interest. For example, if you want to be a teacher,

take time to speak with the Director of Elementary or Sec-

ondary Education.

Have you been working on your resume? This useful tool is

necessary for seniors who request recommendation letters

from teachers or counselors. Use Family Connection to cre-

ate and/or update a list of activities, clubs, volunteerism, etc.

See Mr. West in the career center for help on your resume’.

Now is a good time to register for an SAT or ACT. Be sure

to take the ACT with writing. More and more colleges

accept the ACT.

Where can you get $25.00 worth of FREE food/beverages AND help the Junior Class at the same time?? With our Prom just around the corner (the Saturday be-fore Memorial Day), the Junior Class is hard at it selling Sheetz Coupon Book-lets. Each booklet is chock full of FREE items like hot dogs, coffee, fountain drinks, ff and parfaits along with BOGO offers to include buy one Made to Order sandwich and get the second one FREE! It sounds like it couldn't get any better.....but it does, especially for the JuniorClass. We will make a nifty profit of $4. for EVERY booklet we sell. Since we knew how popu-lar they would be, we ordered 1000 of them. That would be a profit of $4,000. into our prom fund.

The Drama Department is hard at work rehearsing for this year’s spring musical, THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE is a hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show's Tony Award winning creative team

has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

The Woman’s Club of Loudoun and the Ecology The Woman’s Club of Loudoun and the Ecology

Club of LCHS Partner on Wildlife ProjectClub of LCHS Partner on Wildlife Project

The Woman’s Club of Loudoun funded a wildlife project developed by the Ecology Club of Loudoun County High School. As part of its mission to support conservation, the Woman’s Club of Loudoun was pleased to be able to collaborate with the club. Mrs. Carolyn Ryman, president of the Woman’s Club, contacted Mrs. Tracy Webster, the club advisor, expressing her interest in joining together on a local conservation project. Club members proposed the construction and placement of bluebird nest boxes.

Ecology Club members built twelve bluebird nest boxes of oak and walnut lumber. Their de-sign was very similar to the Virginia Bluebird Society suggested plans, including the recom-mended predator guards for snakes and raccoons.

Seven of the nest boxes are now located on school grounds. The club received some advice on box placement from Janet Locklear, who manages many of the bluebird trails throughout Loudoun County. She was able to walk the school property with Mrs. Webster to find ideal sites. It is recommended that boxes be at least 300 feet apart. Seven boxes fit "comfortably" on school grounds and the other five were placed in the Fox Ridge development, adjacent to the high school.

The Woman’s Club of Loudoun received an Honorable Mention award from the General Federa-tion of Women’s Clubs for this project. The Woman’s Club of Loudoun actively supports the Loudoun County Public School district, sponsoring four $500 HOBY State Leadership grants and annually awarding a $1000 scholarship to a graduate of Monroe Technology Center. New members are always welcome. At LCHS, the Woman's Club recognizes an outstanding member of the Crossed Sabres literary magazine staff and one outstanding member of the Raider newspaper staff. The students' names are engraved on the Helen Niman Raider Award plaque.
