Well, I am starting out with Spring Fling and all I can think of is WOW!! Our

Chapter had a BLAST!

Never would have even thought that we (Lori & I) would make the Chapter Directors

of the Year. I know that some of you have never met Lori but believe me she does a

lot behind the scenes. She has GREAT ideas and we talk at home about ways we

should do this and that. She wanted you to know that she wishes she could do

more, like more attendance, but her business keeps her pretty busy. She does make it to some of the meetings

and helps a lot. Some of you have seen her at Winter Festival, Fun Day and our monthly meetings, but during

Spring Fling she just can’t get away from her business.

What a Bomb Shell that was dropped when Richard and Becky Griffin announced

that Chapter TN-N, Directors Tony & Lori Douglas were the Chapter Directors of the

Year. I was stunned, to say the least. I was not expect- ing anything like that. All I wanted to do was just have FUN with the Chapter and lead them to the same FUN that

I have always had. Of course, I have Jeff Douglas (my brother) and when he is at the

meetings, there is going to be some FUN. I’ve tried to give him to Dennis Peterson at

Chapter TN-Q several times, but Dennis said I should keep him. Go figure! I also think

Max Thomas could use him. Max and Jeff are pretty close. If you don’t know what I am talking about, ask

Max.

I never will forget the first time I went to Spring Fling with Bill Henson. He talked me into it and I had just

joined GWRRA two months earlier. I did not know what to expect, but he stated that it would be FUN. I never

competed in any of the events, I didn’t know anything about it, it wasn’t mentioned at our meeting, mostly

went to see what it was about, but I had FUN just being there. At the Closing of Spring Fling, then I knew what

a Chapter should be doing, getting involved in everything they can, regardless if you win anything or not, just

get in there and have the FUN, LAUGHTER and the MEMORIES you can take back and tell others about. I

know every Chapter Director knows they have a GREAT BUNCH of members, but I am very PROUD of our

members, because they are always (Every One of Them) wanting to get involved or participate in whatever we

plan THEY ARE THE BEST!!!

I want to THANK ALL of Chapter TN-N members for standing behind me. You make Lori & me, VERY

PROUD to be your Chapter Directors. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS and we hope to

have even a better year to come. Special thanks to, David & Marie McGill, Max & Renee Thomas, Ronny & Dee

England, Mitchell & Judy Johns, Allen & Dottie Wessels, Richard & Becky Griffin, Alan & Glenda Keough, Tony & Toni Ann Boquet, and Ken & Julia

Hello everybody. Hope everyone is doing fine. We are sure having some great riding weather. I am sorry that

I had to miss the last meeting, but I had to go to my grandkids birthday parties. I figure I can meet any time,

but birthdays come once a year.

I did get to go to Portland the next weekend and we sure had a good time. They meet at a Mexican restau-

rant and boy the food was delicious. We played a lot of games and had a lot of fun. That’s me with my head in

my hand wondering if Jeff really has eyes in the back of his head. I don’t think they heard what the District

Director had to say. We did not win the plaque, but it was still worth going. Chapter C won the plaque but we

think it was because they wore all that orange. That’s okay because we sure had FUN!

Well Sandra rode some with Tony and now she is hooked. Don’t know how long it will take her, but I bet she ends up with a Trike before long. I guess I will put the Insta-trike kit on the 1500 and teach her to ride it.

It will be hard to do, but it will be better than putting her on a two wheeler. Remember she feel off the two

wheeler and we were sitting still.

Hope everybody will get to go to the Fun Day on June 2. This is also going to count for our monthly meet-

ing, so let’s all try to attend and have a big turnout. See you at Chapter Q in

Clarksville.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Secu-

rity and the Tennessee Highway Patrol are encouraging motorists to exercise caution in response to the rise in mo-

torcycle fatalities in the state and across the nation this year.

Motorcycle fatalities accounted for 12 percent of total fatalities in Tennessee in 2011. As of May 7, there has

been a 31 percent increase in motorcycle fatalities in the state compared to this same time last year. Thirty-eight

motorcyclists have died in crashes this year, and preliminary figures show four were killed in the first week of May

alone.

“The unseasonably warmer temperatures this winter may have contributed to the rise in motorcycle fatalities

this year,” Bill Gibbons, Department of Safety and Homeland Security commissioner, said. “As the weather contin-

ues to improve, we will see more motorcyclists on the roadways. It is important for motorists and motorcyclists

alike to educate themselves, be alert and follow the rules of the road to help keep everyone safe.”

In 2010, there were 4,502 motorcycle riders who were killed in traffic-related deaths across the nation, ac-

counting for 14 percent of total fatalities for the year. In 2009, motorcyclist fatalities decreased for the first time

since 1997, when 4,462 motorcyclists were killed. In Tennessee, the number of motorcyclists killed in crashes de-

creased from 138 in 2010 to 114 motorcycle fatalities in 2011.

“Drinking and driving is not just a problem for motorists in cars or trucks,” THP Col. Tracy Trott said. “Of the

114 motorcycle fatalities on Tennessee roadways last year, 22.8 percent of them were alcohol-related. By enforcing

impaired driving laws, we hope to reduce serious injury and fatal crashes amongst motorcyclists.”

Motorcyclists must also share in the responsibility by wearing Department of Transportation-compliant hel-

mets and other protective gear. Tennessee law requires the more than 300,000 Tennessee riders and their pas-

sengers to wear the approved helmets and protective eyewear.

“Motorcyclists are much more vulnerable than passenger vehicle occupants,” Kendell Poole, governor’s highway

safety office director, said. “It is imperative that they make themselves visible to other motorists by wearing brightly colored protective gear or reflective tape, and most importantly, a DOT- compliant helmet. For every 100

motorcycle riders killed in crashes while not wearing a helmet, 37 of them could have been saved had they worn

helmets.” The Department of Safety and Homeland Security also administers the Motorcycle Rider Education Program

(MREP), which provides courses on rider education, public awareness initiatives, information on the effects of alco-

hol and drugs, and licensing procedures. There are both basic and advanced rider courses available.

“The safe operation of a motorcycle requires practiced skill, knowledge and a respectful understanding of the

limitations imposed by the operator, the machine and the environment,” John Milliken, program coordinator for

MREP, said. “Motorcyclists must educate themselves by taking an accredited training course and never ride be-

yond their skill ability. Ultimately, it will help make them safer and more effective on the roads.”

Can you believe it! It’s May already. The next following months are vacation months for a

lot of people, especially Goldwinger’s. Some will take cruises, some will fly away, and others

will ride their bikes into the sunset. Remember the Chapter Post Office contest and take lots

of pictures as you travel.

Kimberly and I will be vacationing this month. Unfortunately we will not be riding our

Goldwing, but flying to Costa Rica. As you are reading this newsletter, we are probably sitting

on the beach sipping on a costal special. We will post some of our vacation pictures and hope-

fully a cute story in the next newsletter.

Last Saturday, several of our chapter members participated in

the St. Jude collection day at Wal-Mart in Jackson, TN. This was a

very successful collection day and we would like to thank everyone

who participated. We collected over $2000 to add to our St. Jude col-lection. Hopefully, we will supersede what we collected and do-

nated last year. The chapter has scheduled two other collection dates which are Satur-

day, June 30th and Saturday, September 8th; times and places will be discussed at

the upcoming chapter meetings.

We would also like to thank everyone who participated in trying to capture the Region plaque. Even though we

did not capture the plaque, we added more points toward becoming Chapter of the Year for 2012. Chapter, this is

what it is all about…Having fun! As your Chapter Member Enhancement Coordinators (MEC), we would like to

encourage you to continue the participation and fun.

Spring Fling – What can I say? Except yyyyyyyyyyyyup.

It was absolutely wonderful! Richard, Becky and the District Staff did a super

job at putting it together. It will be hard to top Spring Fling 2012. A big THANK

YOU to everyone at District.

Chapter N has a good time no matter where they are. We had fun doing the

talent contest, even if we didn’t know to stay in the Luau Theme. Win or lose,

Chapter N will be laughing all the way.

Avery and I were fortunate to get to leave

for the mountains on Wed. We rode with

Billy and Shirley Mullins and Don and Janet Rinehart. Taking it easy, stop-

ping often and being with two great couples made for a very enjoyable trip.

We stopped for lunch in Lynchburg where Janet got to see the rare white

bats on their roost. After lunch we all visited Judy’s Leather Shop. Talk about women and their shoes / just how many leather vests does one man need? Actually, we all made at least

one purchase. The shop gives a discount to GWRRA members.

After spending the night in Crossville, we arrived in Pigeon Forge before noon on Thursday, ready for a week

end of semesters and loads of fun. Congratulations to Tony Douglas for being selected the “Chapter Director of

the Year”. Anyone that knew Chapter N before and after Tony will understand his selection. Chapter N was

proud to have Reginald and Kimberly Seymour represent them in the Couple of the Year Competition.

Sorry, but I have to stop here: What happens in Pigeon Forge, stays in Pigeon Forge, so I can’t tell you

about the Love Train in the balcony, the Brownies or how long it takes to thaw frozen fruit. You will have to at-

tend Spring Fling next year so you don’t miss out.

Catch the new name—did ya’? I am hooked!! Boy what fun the Spring Fling was! I got back from Spring Fling

and I started surfing and google-ing. Diane it is all your fault. She told me about all the fun they were having

and how she wished they had started sooner. And then we had a great May chapter meeting. I’ve got it really

bad!! So I thought this month’s letter would be about the fun we all had while “wingin’ it”, picture style.

Then we had the chapter meeting on May 5th and all that other barrel of FUN!

I got my FroggToggs for keeping dry in the rain. I got my rubber galoshes to keep my feet dry when I ride in the

rain. I got my brand new, fashionable Honda Cap made just for us girls, and my brand new handy dandy leather

vest that will soon house all my really neat badges and other “stuff”. Bought a ridin’ jacket at the vendor booth,

too. But wait---something is wrong with this picture---where’s the trike? Stay tuned for that exciting saga!!!

Hi Everyone,

I would like to tell everyone how much Anna and I enjoyed going to Spring Fling this year. Since we had to

take vacation time to go, we decided to take an extra day and go one day early. We left about 7 a.m. Wednesday

morning and rode very little interstate. We spent almost 11 hours on the road. We enjoyed the time we spent to-

gether seeing GOD’S glory in nature. We also had some fellowship on the way. We stopped for a picnic lunch at a

road side table and had a nice couple stop by and visit with us. They were riding a smaller bike than a Goldwing,

but used to have one.

When we got to the motel it was raining. Jeff Hill and some more were ordering pizza, and they invited us to

join them, which we did. It rained most of the night and next day. We put on our rain gear and still rode a hun-

dred miles Thursday. We enjoyed the BBQ supper and the hula skirts Thursday night along with the light show.

This was also the first year that we had ever stayed at the host motel, which made it nice to be able to go to your

room anytime. We worked Friday morning at the gates and then visited the vendors. We saw a great show Friday

night at the Grand Majestic Theater.

Saturday morning I went and bought a movie camera to film as I was riding. As soon as I got the camera we

left to go riding with Tony and some more to ride the dragon. We set up my camera and took off. I thought I had

my camera off, but it wasn’t and my card was full before we got to the dragon. Anna says that is not a problem,

we will go back later and film it. We just made it back in time for the talent show. We had a good time at the tal-

ent show and later at the games.

We did not leave in a group Sunday morning, we were a little late leaving. We saw the group sitting at a Shoney’s later on. Anna and I were enjoying our ride when Anna told me that we smelled of burning rubber,

which we had been thru before with a flat rear tire. I pulled off into a truck parking area and the tire was flat. I

was preparing to plug the tire when Tony and the group went by. Tony saw us and stopped at the next exit and

called us and told us he would wait for us. I plugged the slit in the tire with 2 plugs and it was not leaking on the

stand. We took off for the next exit and it wasn’t long till Anna told me we were burning rubber again. I pulled

over on the side and it was flat. I started riding in low gear up the side toward the next exit. We came across a bad

wreck and had to get around it.

We rode on to where Tony and the group were. It was decided to try out Rescue Plus and Tony and the group

would stay to make sure we were picked up. Rescue Plus delivered me almost one hundred miles as they said

they would at no charge. My oldest son took off work and got my truck and 16 ft. trailer and came and got us. It

took him longer than was expected, but that was ok. I give thanks to GOD for keeping Anna and me safe and I

also want to thank Tony and the group for staying and supporting us. Thank GOD for friends like this. Tony also

called later to check to see if we had made it home safe.

** In honor of GWRRA’s 35th Anniversary, each month in 2012 this page will either

contain a Member-written article from someone who has been instrumental in our As-

sociation or an article relaying some of the history of GWRRA. **

Chapter N’s step back into time. We hope you enjoy learning about some of our past

leaders.

This month’s article is submitted by Former President and Executive Director, Mike Wright.

Webster’s Dictionary defines the often used word “Anniversary” as the annual recurrence of a date marking

a “notable event” and, in the Wright Household, there are three of these annual recurrences to celebrate. First

and foremost, my wife, Judy, and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary on June 2nd of this year, a

happening of monumental importance as it is a giant milestone in our lives and that of our family. As a result

of our marriage, Judy and I have a son, Kevin, living in Austin, Texas and a daughter, Regina, living in Avilla,

Indiana. We are blessed with five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The second milestone that we will celebrate in September of this year is our 30th anniversary as Members of

the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. Our involvement in GWRRA began the first month we joined GWRRA as

Assistant Area Representatives of Chapter G in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and evolved through the chain of active

leadership roles to the position of Executive Director of the Association in 1995. During that period of time, I

was given the honor of becoming President and Executive Director of the association. In 2005, we retired from

GWRRA and returned from Phoenix, Arizona to Indiana and now live near Columbia City, Indiana which is a

bedroom community of our next Wing Ding site, Fort Wayne. We are proud to now hold the position of Presi-

dent Emeritus, with the knowledge that during our entire tenure we were completely dedicated to the Associa-

tion and, more importantly, its membership. To this day most of the programs implemented under our tenure are still in place and are serving the membership in a variety of ways. While it is always tempting for any of us

to toot our own horn, we will forego doing that and will, instead, thank the hundreds of Officers, Staff, Members

and Home Office Employees who were involved in the implementation of those programs.

The third anniversary to be celebrated this year is the 35th year of operations of the Gold Wing Road Riders

Association. It would be remiss not to congratulate Paul and Dottie Hildebrand, Shirley Stephens-Garcia and

Benny Garcia and Ken and Rita Davis for having the passion and resilience to ensure that the membership was

always first and foremost in their decision-making process while ensuring that the organization was on a strong

financial footing and capable of providing the many benefits mentioned earlier. This included the educational

aspects necessary to maximize safety and training to sharpen leadership skills. I don’t think anyone being on

staff or holding an Officer position wouldn’t say that GWRRA was responsible for their further growth as an in-

dividual, both professionally and personally.

The 35th year of existence for GWRRA will be celebrated at Wing Ding 34 in Fort Wayne, Indiana at the

beautiful Memorial Coliseum. The dates for Wing Ding 34 will be July 4th through July 7th. This will be the

third Wing Ding in Fort Wayne and we are proud that we were able to ink contracts for the first and second

Wing Dings held in this beautiful city. For those who have been there for either or both of these events, they

know how wonderful and helpful the entire area was to our Members. Judy and I are looking forward to helping

celebrate this historic and commemorative festivity. Another opportunity to celebrate GWRRA’s 35th Anniver-

sary is a Caribbean cruise scheduled for November 4th through November 11th, 2012. Having been on many of

the GWRRA cruises, we highly recommend this opportunity for all Members to be a part of the festivities with

wonderful ports of call.

Long live GWRRA and long live the opportunity it presents to every Member to grow within themselves and to

build everlasting friendships.

Officer Certification Program

What is the Officer Certification Program?

National has introduced a new set of initials into our Association and they are “OCP”. Some of you may have

already heard these initials being thrown around by some of our members and you may have heard some fact or

fiction as to what they mean.

OCP stands for “Officer Certification Program”. This is a new program that has been rolled out by National to

provide the knowledge and tools necessary to help our volunteer leaders to be more effective in their position as

officers in the association. The program is designed for all officers, from National down to the Chapter level.

The program is a day and a half long course that consists of 9 modules covering the Officer Handbook, a knowl-

edge exam, 4 modules consisting of expanded, advanced seminars especially for the GWRRA Officer and an addi-

tional module geared specifically for Region/District Directors and their Assistants. Upon successful completion

of the course, the officer will receive a designation as a “certified officer”.

Beginning on March 1st of 2010, all Operations officers must be “certified” by completing the OCP. To meet

this goal, the Districts and Regions across the Association have been adding and scheduling OCP courses to their

training curriculums. Additionally, any member that would like to take the OCP may do so, you don’t have

to be stepping up to an officer position.

The spouses of officer’s are not required to attend the OCP; but we encourage you to do so since most couples

work as a team. For those Tennessee Officer’s that may find it more convenient to take the OCP on a different

date, you can click here for a listing of some of the dates that other Districts and Regions will be holding OCP’s.

You can contact the appropriate POC and see if they have room.

That’s it in a nutshell. Now when you hear the initials “OCP” or hear your CD saying that they’ll be attending

the Officer Certification Program, you’ll know what they mean. We’ll keep your CD’s informed as we find out

changes or additional information and they in turn will keep you updated.

The time of year was Spring Fling and TN-N was on the way to Pigeon Forge. In our cara-

van alone (three different groups were traveling to the Fling) we had Chapter Director,

Tony Douglas, Assistant Chapter Director, Eldon and Debbie Seaton, Barry Harrell,

Chapter Newsletter staff, Sandy Hayes (that’s me) and Jeff Douglas with the Harley, bring-

ing up the rear. (The picture is of the caravan. Don’t ask me how I did this. Uh I pulled over

and snapped the picture, right. Tony disregard the pic- ture of the steering wheel).

You have to know that I traveled everywhere with the Chapter, but since I had

no bike (of any kind yet-well a loaner from my brother but I don’t know how to

ride), I was in my Blazer to the CB that our director had

loaned to me listening (that’s my Blazer on our first stop to

Spring Fling) . As everybody kept checking with each other on the status of the ride, Tony kept calling for Dean. I

knew everyone in the caravan and I couldn’t hear anyone

talking back to Tony, so I kept wondering who was Dean?

But I never thought to ask, and while at Spring Fling, I never met Dean. (Keep this picture in

your mind—more about it later).

Fast forward to May 12th and chasing wood (Wanderer Plaque) to TN-S.

(The Big Orange was a force to reckon’ with and they walked away the win-

ner). The caravan met up in Paris and I was able to hitch a ride with Tony.

Eldon and Nolan were behind us, and Jeff and Shannon were bringing up

the rear again. So this time, when Tony started calling for Dean, I was able

to hear the response and who do you think I hear but

Jeff answering back, Now I think to myself, “Why does he call Jeff “Dean”? He does have a

cool looking bike (see picture above), so I’m thinking maybe Jeff thinks he is cool and he has

earned the nickname “Dean”. Like James Dean (if you don’t know who that is—you will miss

the whole point) maybe Jeff thinks he is cool. (Now he is looking “cool” in this picture).

So tonight, when I realize how ridiculous this now sounds, (not you Jeff), I ask Eldon, “Why does Tony call Jeff

“Dean”?” He tells me it is because his name is Jeffery Dean. Go figure—it has nothing to do with James Dean at

all. But I bet you had a chuckle at my expense. Are we having FUN or what! Come to find out, Tony calls him

“Dean” from the Beverly Hill Billies, from Jethro Bodine and cut it down to Dean. Now you know!

Majestic and Chapter S FUN!! Hope you enjoyed the Soul Train production. Yep!! That was Chapter N.

I recently worked during the EMS Aware in Madison County and had the privilege to speak with a husband and

wife who were both retired RNs. The husband was also a Veteran. As he toured the mobile hospital that was on

display, he spoke of a re-enactor of the Civil War who shared this recipe with him. It is suppose to be authentic (if

you don’t count the hot sausage, Rotel, can of Nibblet corn and the Jalapeno peppers-HA). But they tell me you

will love this. He says makes 2 pans and is even good reheated for breakfast. Yep! Blame this on Sandy Hayes.

CAJUN CORNBREAD

1 CUP FLOUR

1 CUP CORNMEAL

1 CUP MILK

1 LB. HOT SAUSAGE

1 CAN ROTEL

1 SMALL CAN GREEN GIANT NIBBLET CORN

12 OZ. GRATED CHEDDAR CHEESE

3-4 JALAPENO PEPPERS (OPTIONAL)

1 MEDIUM ONION

BROWN 1 LB HOT SAUSAGE AND DRAIN GREASE THOROUGHLY. MIX THE REMAINDER OF CONTENTS ALONG WITH SAUSAGE IN A LARGE MIXING BOWL. (CAN BE DONE WITH A MIXER). GREASE 2 PANS WELL

WITH CRISCO OR PAM. POUR EQUAL BATCH INTO EACH PAN. PREHEAT OVEN TO 350 DEGREES. BAKE 50 -

55 MINUTES.

I USE 1/2 HOT AND 1/3 MILD SAUSAGE AND A LARGE IRON SKILLET. IT DEPENDS ON HOW HOT YOU

WOULD LIKE THE CORNBREAD AS TO HOW MANY JALAPENO'S YOU WOULD WANT IN THE MIXTURE. I HOPE

YOU ENJOY THE CORNBREAD. IT IS REALLY GOOD IN THE WINTER WITH SOUP.
