Chamber Cultivates Awareness of Cape Verde Culture and Opportunity

A delegation of business leaders, led bythe Metro South Chamber, recentlyreturned from a trade mission to CapeVerde to explore business opportunities forthe area.

Approximately 100,000 Cape Verdeans

live within 30 miles of Brockton, earn-ing Brockton the reputation as the “11thisland” of the 10-island nation off thewestern cost of Africa. Yet almost all ofthe U.S. development money spent byCape Verde ($110 million in 2005 alone)has gone to contracts with Europeancompanies, not American ones.

Cape Verde is a growing countrywith 5.6% growth in 2011. There isgreat opportunity in Cape Verde, however very little American pres-ence.

The recent trade mission marks thefirst American group to make a trip toCape Verde to explore business oppor-tunities for Brockton area businesses.

The delegation included ChristopherCooney, Chamber President & CEO;James Blake, President of HarborOneCredit Union; Brockton Councilor atLarge Jass Stewart; Sheila Sullivan-Jardim, Executive Director of BAWIB;Peter Vlaco of Brophy & Philips andKen DeDominici of Churchill Linens. The delegation met with the PrimeMinister and ministers in banking anddevelopment, the head of the stockexchange and the U.S. Ambassador.

Cooney said strong partnerships canproduce mutual benefits to businessesand people in the U.S. and CapeVerde. Several opportunities arebeing explored.
