May 2011 Proclaiming the word & work of God OCHESTER Halo Easter Schools Competition 2011 Local school children in Walderslade, Chatham, have been putting their creativity to the church's benefit this Easter. St Philip & St James' Church announced the winners of a special competition to design the church's Easter publicity for their services in Holy Week. The church, known locally as Pip & Jims', received over 100 entries from children aged 6 to 16 for the competition which was split into categories. Children could submit a drawing, painting, photograph or artwork created on a computer. The Bishop of Rochester, the Rt Rev James Langstaff, joined Pip & Jims' the Rev Martyn Saunders, and Miss Hazel Platt, a secondary school art teacher at Cornwallis Academy, to judge the competition and pick the winners. With so many good entries to choose from, the judges had to split one category into two and decided on four winners as well as judging two further entries as 'highly commended'. The children's artwork was then turned into posters that were put up around the parish in local shops and at the church. The pictures were turned into postcards to give away to family, friends and neighbours with details of Pip & Jims' church services for Easter. The winners received a commemorative copy of the finished artwork as well as vouchers for Toys R Us or iTunes and an Easter egg. Pip & Jims' Curate the Rev David Green, who organised the competition, said, "We've been really impressed with the number and quality of the children's entries. We asked them to think about the Christian meaning of Easter and they've responded with some very thoughtful and creative work. I know our congregation at Pip & Jims' are impressed and local shopkeepers have been positive as well. This may just become an annual tradition!" Fairtrade Fortnight at Christ Church, Bexleyheath

The Fair Trade promotion and sale atChrist Church on 12 March, tocelebrate Fairtrade Fortnight, was ourbest ever. We kept having to put outmore tables and chairs for the peoplewho wanted to drink coffee, tea ororange juice, and sample the manycakes and cookies. We had stallsshowcasing new items from thecurrent Traidcraft catalogue, and atable to remind people of the everydaynecessities that are permanentfeatures in the Traidcraft range. Inaddition, we sold Neema Crafts, fromTanzania and craft items from Ethiopia.Through CMS, Christ Church supportsAndy & Suzie Hart, who work inTanzania. Suzie started Neema Crafts,

which has transformed the lives ofdisabled people. Now, instead of beinga burden on their families, they are ableto support themselves & their familiesby making wonderful jewellery, paperand card items, and fabric and

clothing. The ornaments and cardsfrom Ethiopia were made by disabledpeople, and some beautiful jewellery ismade by young women who aretraining to be primary school teachers. Both groups, traditionally marginalised, are empowered by having their workvalued.

The message of Traidcraft is"fighting poverty through trade", and itis a motto which can apply to all theprojects which featured on 12 March. It was a totally win-win situation -buyers in Bexleyheath got lovely, topquality items and the producers wereable to earn money to improve theirlives.

Work is completed on St Philip’s Church, Tunbridge Wells

Recent development work on theChancel area of St Philip’s Church,Tunbridge Wells, has transformedthe appearance of the church bothinternally and externally.

Externally the church had theappearance more like a brick builtcommercial building than a churchand many local residents wereunaware the building was church asthe main visible sign that thebuilding was a church - the cross onthe apex of the main hall was largelyobscured by oak trees for most ofthe year.

The replacement of the flat roof ofthe chancel with an apex roof, theincorporation of three stained glasswindows and the relocation of thecross to the wall adjacent to thechancel show very visibly that thebuilding is a church! Many peoplehave already commented ‘it now

looks like a real church’! With the crossfloodlit and the stained glass windowsbacklit at night the appearance is nowstunning.

Internally the replacement of the flatroof with an apex roof, the replacementof the large immersion baptismal poolwith a portable pool, and theincorporation of the three stained glasswindows has transformed a darkcramped Chancel into a light, roomyand inspiring one.

The stained glass windows weredesigned and made by Isobel Ackaryof Horam and incorporate ancientsymbols for the Trinity into a moderndesign with each window having aTrinitarian theme. The windows werededicated by Bishop Brian.PPhhoottooss bbyy RRaayy HHaawwkkiinnss

SpringwatchBy Madeleine Waggett, Churchwarden

A wonderful day was spent onSaturday 26 March at Holy TrinityLamorbey. Lots of people turned upwith a wonderful array of implementswith which to do battle with thebrambles, weeds and general rubbishthat decorated our grounds. While thedaring disappeared into theundergrowth, eventually to be seensome considerable time late, otherspatiently chopped the debris up. Wewere kept well fed and watered, thehome made scones were to die for! Sowe had no excuse but to keep going.Julie and Alison from Barclays workedlike Trojans. Due to the efforts of one ofthe churchwardens, Barclays have

provided £200 for plants to beautifythe grounds. How wonderful - a fewhours labour, a lot of love and a dose

of sunshine to make our church gardenbeautiful.
