What Israel Means…

As we approach Yom Ha’atzma’ut , Israel’s Independence Day on Tuesday May 10, I thought it would be interesting to look at what the land and state of Israel has meant to some people in the past and present. Please share your thoughts with me. Also, remember the WALK FOR ISRAEL is Sunday May 15. I hope to see you there!

“Only in the Holy Land can the spirit of our people develop and become a light for the world” ~ Rabbi Abraham Isaac HaKohen Kook

“To consummate the purchase of a house in Israel, the deed may be written even on the Sabbath” ~ Babylonian Talmud

“To every place that I travel, I am always traveling to the Land of Israel” ~ Rabbi Nachman of Bratzlav

“Reside in Israel, even among a majority of idolaters, rather than outside of Israel, even among a majority of Jews.” ~ Tosefta

“What is so precious about the land? What is the magnetic quality of its atmosphere? The land of Israel – biblical chapters hovering everywhere. Places like Hebrew letters, waiting to be vocalized, waiting for crowns with which to be adorned. The land is a text.” ~ Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

“The thing that is special about the State of Israel is not that it fulfills an ancient promise, or heralds a new age of material scrutiny…but that it finally offers the opportunity to carry out the social law of Judaism.” ~ Emmanuel Levinas

“Israel…not only allows us to give expression to what is most noble in the Jewish tradition, but it also readily exposes moral and spiritual inadequacies in that tradition.” ~ Rabbi David Hartman

“For the coming home of Israel after eighty long generation seems to me more than what it is usually taken for. It is more than a victory of justice over brute force, thought it is that; more than an advance of democracy over feudalism…more than a new lease on life for Judaism …[it is] nothing less than the demonstration of a universal, vital, joyous truth concerning human existence, the truth of the ever present possibility in life of the miraculous.” ~ Rabbi Milton Steinberg

“Above all, this country is our own. Nobody has to get up in the morning and worry what his neighbors think of him. Being a Jew is no problem here.” ~ Golda Meir

“There is a particular sense of comfort for Jews in the land of Israel. I have never felt more at home than when I lived in the land of Israel.” ~ Rabbi Robert Gamer

Shalom u'vrakhah,

Message from Rabbi Gamer

WHO IS THAT?

Ever wonder who is that man sitting in the fifth row, near the center aisle or that woman with the blue dress? There are so many people whom we recognize in shul but just don’t know their name. That’s all about to change.

Congregation Beth Shalom has launched a new nametag initiative. When you come to shul on Shabbat and holidays you will be requested to wear a nametag. This will help us to learn your name and help you to learn other people’s names as well. We will also be in a better position to welcome visitors (those people without nametags!) After Kiddush, re-file your nametag in the rack.

Nametags have been prepared for all adult members. You don’t need to be a member to get a nametag made. Just let an usher know that you want a nametag and one will be made for you (after Shabbat of course) and one will be waiting for you on your next visit.

This effort is part of Congregation Beth Shalom’s continuing effort to build an inclusive community where, as they say at the Cheers bar, “everyone knows your name.”

KIDDUSH LUNCHES

Want to have fun AND contribute to our kehillah kadosha (sacred community)? Join us to cook the monthly Kiddush lunches, the last Friday of each month. We meet at 10 a.m. in the shul kitchen and finish by about 1 p.m. But join us for an hour or two – whatever your schedule allows. We guarantee good company, and who know, maybe the rabbi will be cooking that month!

Likewise, if you’re celebrating a special birthday, anniversary or other occasion, why not sponsor a Kiddush lunch? There are menus available in all price ranges. Or gather a group of your friends to sponsor together. And know that YOU made it possible for your shul family to gather together after davening to schmooze, eat and connect.

Call Mandy Garver, 248.687.9611, or the shul office, 248.547.7970, to volunteer or sponsor.

Whenever I write my monthly HaKol piece, I look back to see what I wrote last year. In 2010, I wrote about the counting the Omer, counting the days of transition till our new Rabbi arrived. Now I am counting the days of my presidency. Interestingly, there is still a great deal to do as I phase down. Since we altered our fiscal year, there is a new budget to compose. There are exciting fundraising plans for the fall season. There is an Executive Vice President whom I have to bring up to speed, and there are still the day to day events that need going over. Today I met a friend whom I had not seen in several years, who had heard of that there was a physician who had become President of CBS. He was working very hard and, after almost two years was getting a little ragged. When I explained that that was me, she hugged me and expressed her sympathy. Synagogues need leadership with a clear vision of the future. It is not an easy job but I, for one, desire neither sympathy nor gratitude. If CBS is to survive as a distinct entity, we must all contribute, both with time and with money. I do not have much more time to serve you as President, but with that which remains, I intend to strengthen the foundation we have established that will support us in the future.

B’Shalom,

From the President … Joshua Adler

I hope everyone had a good Pesach. Now that we are in May and the days have (finally) warmed up, I would like to thank everyone who helped make our April “Man of the Year” dinner honoring Jack Kahn, a success.

Thank you to Janice Steingold for your lovely invitations and flyer. Thanks to Neil Weiner for creating our program, Birkat Hamazon pamphlets, and Jack’s certificate. As always, your work is appreciated. Thanks to Ted Friedman for emceeing the evening, and to Richard Racusin for his valuable assistance in keeping track of our responses and all the other things he does to keep me on track. Thanks, also to our food committee, Cary Lieberman, Jamie Snider and Bernie Hammer. Morrison Senior Dining did a nice job in catering the dinner. And above all, thank all of YOU for supporting Men's Club.

We are planning a Detroit Tiger outing this summer. Details will be announced soon.

Finally, now that our synagogue Chesed Committee is in full swing, I want to encourage everyone to get involved in the wonderful Mitzvah of volunteering. I just started being a career mentor through Jewish Family Services. My mentee is a young lady who might be interested in a career in health care. She has been shadowing me and others in our radiology department. So far, it has been a good experience both for me and her. Even if you don't have a lot of time, there is someone whose life you can touch for the better. Men's Club has always as a group been active in the community, but it starts with the individual.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Dear Friends,

Donor Dinner invitations were mailed several weeks ago. I hope you have returned your response and will be joining us as we honor Mona Greenbaum and Alicia Nelson for their many years of assistance to Beth Shalom. It isn't often that we pause to acknowledge the woman behind the successful man. But Mona and Alicia are more than that. They have become role models for all of us. As wives, mothers, grandmothers, educators, and leaders in our Beth Shalom family they exemplify all that Sisterhood tries to achieve. Please send in your response and let us know you will be joining us.

Special thanks needs to be given to our Executive Committee and Board of Directors for the time and effort they have put into planning this event. I would especially like to acknowledge Liz Kannon who has orchestrated our Donor Ad Book (wait until you see it!), designed the beautiful invitations you received and was a part of almost every facet of this program from the start. Todah Rabah Liz for a job well done!

Spring has finally arrived! The Gan children are ready to play outdoors, to plant their garden and reap the harvest. We are going to need help from the professional farmers in the congregation to plant, weed and perhaps even reap the harvest from their own garden plot.

Fall registration is terrific! We have a few spaces open in the two-year-olds’ class, so please tell your friends to come visit.

We were thrilled to host the Ackers who came to visit recently on a Friday and join our pre-Shabbat activities. Do you know any seniors interested in joining us on a Friday morning? They are welcome to read a story or just come and enjoy the company of our Gan children and staff.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ISRAEL! All children ages 2-5 are invited to join the Gan as they celebrate Israel’s birthday on May 11 at 10 a.m. This is an innovative program where children visit and interact with places they might see in Israel. Reservations are required. There is no charge.

SPLISH-SPLASH PARENT TOT is coming this summer! Register for Splish Splash Parent Tot beginning Tuesday, June 21 at 9:45 a.m. This is a fun summer program for adults and children from 14 months through 3 years. The days are filled with water and outdoor play, songs, finger plays, and picnic snacks.

WANTED: College students and teens! The Gan is looking for the following to teach afternoon specialties in the fall: Dance, karate, soccer, drama, instruments such as drums or flute. Please contact Susan if you are interested.

Dear Beth Shalom Family,

It is my pleasure to make a contribution to Beth Shalom in honor

of our very own Mitzvah Man, Tom Hildebrandt. I called, and he

insane. He helped me resolve the issue and now I can function

almost normally.

Religious School Parents ... !

Dear Religious School Parents:

I can't believe how quickly this year has gone. On behalf of RSP, I want to thank all the parents for their snack and bagel purchases … because of your support; we have been able to do all the things we set out to do this year.

I want to give Amy and Jared Chapman as huge "THANK YOU" for selling bagels anytime I couldn't.

I hope that someone is willing to take on RSP and continue the traditions of Wednesday snack sales and Sunday bagels. Please let me know if you and maybe a friend want to be in this role. It is a perfect way to be a part of Beth Shalom and the Religious School.

Have a wonderful summer,

I’m writing this article the day after our amazing time at Family Camp 2011, held April 1 through 3 at the Butzel Conference Center. The weather cooperated somewhat, with on and off hail, rain, and sleet. It didn’t stop the kids on the rock climbing wall, who kept on climbing, probably pretending they were scaling the rock walls in Boulder, Colorado (it was that cold)! The campfire held up for Havdallah and s' mores. The weather was the only low point of the weekend. We sang (thanks to Lisa Soble-Siegmann), we prayed (lead by our amazing Rabbi Gamer) and rested (it was Shabbat after all)! The staff at family camp kept the kids busy while the adults bonded over food and games. Our family plaques are on display in the main lobby to show off the amazing time we had as family units as well. Next year’s family camp can only be better if more families attend, and we can almost guarantee better weather. Mark your calendars for June 1 to 3, 2012. Scholarships are available for anyone interested in coming!

Our featured teachers this month are Ahuvah Blumenfeld and Heather Gale. Ahuvah taught kindergarten this year (it’s her second year with us). Her smile is contagious; you see it on every one of her student’s faces! Ahuvah graduated from Akiva Hebrew Day School in 2007 and spent her summers as a counselor and caregiver for young children. Her love for children comes through in her lessons, teaching prayer, the weekly parshah and parts in a synagogue. Both Ahuvah and Heather have something in common: they have both lived in Israel for an extended amount of time. Heather Gale teaches fifth and sixth grade Hebrew, and this is her first year at CBS. She had no easy task as she began in December! With the interactive lessons and games she introduces weekly, her students are becoming great Hebrew readers. With our school year coming to an end, I wish these two teachers, as well as the rest of the staff, a restful summer.

Drawing Contest for Children

The Program for Holocaust Survivors and Families is sponsoring a Butterfly Drawing

Contest for children between the ages of 5 -12 years old. The idea behind the contest is to

remind and teach children that not all people are as free to fly about as butterflies.

Jewish Senior Life will display as many of the entries as possible at the Film Festival Fundraiser on Thursday, May 19 at the Berman Center for the Performing Arts. The annual Film Festival Fundraiser will feature the film “Inside Hana’s Suitcase” about a teacher and her students from Tokyo, Japan, who received a child’s suitcase from Auschwitz Museum in Poland.
