The standards themselves are principles-based and require a detailed knowledge of the underlying concepts, as well as the application of extensive professional judgment.

Dear Readers...

It seems like only yesterday that I was writing to welcome you to the first issue of your

CityPages, but here I am again ... May has arrived and we’re already on issue number 5.

Where does all the time go?

Launching a new magazine is always a challenge, so I must thank you all for picking up your

copy each month and for giving such positive feedback ... I’m glad that so many people seem

to like what we’re doing. Thanks, also, to all our contributors who continue to produce some

really interesting and informative articles. For the past month they have been slaving over

their keyboards yet again, and in this issue you will find improvements to our Medical, Health

and Beauty section, which contains lots more hints and tips for everyone. And for those with

big appetites, our Cooking section is now bigger, too!

May has started off pretty wet and windy, which some might like, but if you prefer sunshine

and warm weather then you might want to jump straight to our feature on tourism in Madrid,

and start to plan your vacation. Or for something closer to home, that’s just a little bit

different, why not check out our article on the newest resident at the Scientific Centre, and

plan your trip to see a T. Rex named Sue?

Through this month’s exclusive interviews, we’ll be introducing you to people from the worlds

of entertainment, sport, healthcare, literature and environmental activity: Lama Hatem has

been called “a new Arab Sensation from the Middle East”; Manar Al-Jazzaf is a young tennis

player from Kuwait; Dr. Awatif Al-Shammari is from the Kuwait Ministry of Health, where

she heads their TB Control Unit; Sophie Parou is a French businesswoman with a talent for

creative writing; Hamad Bahrouh is a student who cares about the environment, and who

“walks the talk”. Each has a tale to tell, and you can meet them all inside these pages!

So, I shall not delay you any longer. Dip in to CityPages and enjoy!

BlackBerry Partners Fund launched the third annual BlackBerry Partners Fund™ Developer Challenge. This year, the Challenge will focus on “Super Apps” and asks developers to showcase applications that take advantage of the BlackBerry® Application Platform’s unique capabilities.

With the international growth of the BlackBerry developer community, this Challenge will be the first to recognize BlackBerry® smartphone applications on a regional basis across four global regions – North America, Latin America, Europe/Middle East/Africa and Asia Pacific. Applications can be submitted to the Challenge starting today and entries will be accepted until September 6, 2010. To apply, visit

http://bpf.wufoo.com/forms/2010-blackberry-super-apps-developer-challenge/ and complete the application form. Both newly developed and existing applications can be entered into this year’s BlackBerry Partners Fund Developer Challenge.

Judges will evaluate applications submitted in seven categories: Productivity, Fun & Games, Knowledge, Sharing, Navigate & Explore, Multi-media, and In the Know. Regional Selections will be notified the week of September 27, 2010. Regional Semi-Finalists in each category will be named by November 1, 2010. Regional Winners and Regional Finalists will be announced on November 18, 2010.

“The BlackBerry Partners Fund Developer Challenge has grown and evolved over the last three years and this year we will be rewarding the BlackBerry developer community at many levels to benefit more developers than ever before,” said Kevin Talbot, Co-managing Partner at BlackBerry Partners Fund. “BlackBerry Partners Fund is celebrating innovation that can only be achieved on the BlackBerry Application Platform, by creating apps that people cannot live without.”

Developers of applications selected at each finalist level will receive unique prizes to support

their development on the BlackBerry Platform and to help them achieve commercial success. Up to four Regional Winners will each receive a prize pack valued at USD$85,000, including application promotion services, BlackBerry smartphones, BlackBerry App World™ marketing support, an Elite membership in the BlackBerry® Alliance Program and more. The prizes are made possible with the help of members of the BlackBerry Developer Services community – including 151 Ventures, App-Promo, DeviceAnywhere, Medialocate, Mob4Hire, and Perfecto Mobile – who are providing numerous services to participants in this year’s BlackBerry Partners Fund Developer Challenge.

Up to 28 Regional Semi-Finalists will each receive prize packages worth over USD$16,000 and up to twelve Regional Finalists will each receive prize packages valued at almost USD$35,000. Up to 400 Regional Selections will receive a free BlackBerry smartphone for submitting their application into the Challenge.

Applications will be judged on quality, user experience and how effectively they have incorporated “Super App” characteristics. The BlackBerry Application Platform allows

developers to quickly and easily build applications that seamlessly share information and interact with core BlackBerry applications or other third party applications. These applications are personalized and contextualized and can integrate with a BlackBerry smartphone's inbox, calendar, address book and other native BlackBerry applications to deliver a highly engaging user experience.

Last year’s winners included 7Digital and FierceTowers. _____________________________________

I am confused and bewildered. I came to ponder how and what exactly defines a father and a husband. I have known a lot of fathers in my adult life, biological father, spiritual father, step father, name it I have met them all. None of them ever speak the same line nor do they ever imagine saying those even when facing a difficult situation.

A biological father, a male person whose sperm unites with an egg, resulting in the conception of a child.A spiritual father, a person in charge for the spiritual growth. An adoptive or foster father is a father who is not biologically responsible in the creation of a child but act and accept the responsibilities of being a father. Nevertheless, they are all fathers.

What are the differences among the three? Nothing much except on how they are viewed based on their original roles. What is common among them? None of them were born as a father right away, but they played their role as a true father because their hearts tell them so.

Being a father is a choice, a decision a man

made and stood by that decision. Like all things on earth, we are govern by what our hearts’ tell us to do. Every decision we made, every choice we took, we always act according to what our conscience tells us. Doing the right thing, no matter how we resent it at times.

It is love that tells a father to give the best for his children. It is love that compels him to teach his kids the right way. It is love that leads him to protect his kids in every possible danger that might harm them. It is love that dictates him to desire everything that is best for his children. It is love that keeps on nagging him to keep on striving to give them a better future. It is love that guides him to be a good person so that his kids will be proud of him someday. It is the love that is the driving force to make every man give an unconditional love to every child.

It is not necessary for a man to be a biological father in order to feel love for his child. Love is felt out in the abundance of goodness of the heart.

The same is true to being a husband. Why in the first place that wife of yours trusted you

with all her heart and life if you didn’t make her believe you love her and will love her until the end? Through good times and bad?

Remember when you were first dating out and she looked like an angel who has fallen from heaven in your eyes? You felt too amorous that you wanted to keep her all to yourself. Succumbing to her every little wish was a pleasure to you. You adored her. Put her on top of the pedestal. You were her knight in the shining armor. You thought you can’t live without her and you thought that she was everything for you. You were overwhelmed with so much love.

Until things between you got topsy turvy and that’s all you can say? If all men and women have that same way of thinking and reasoning, what will happen to the world? Mother Earth is a population of broken families and irresponsible inhabitants.

None of us were already born a father or a mother or a husband or a wife or whatever responsibility we played in life as we grow older. We were all born selfish and self centered.

I wASN’T BORN A FATHER,I wASN’T BORN A HUSBAND

Few months ago, words were uttered by a well versed person who happened to be a husband and a father. “I wasn’t born a father, I wasn’t born a husband”. These words are too dramatic. It might have even won him an award if it was a part of a line of a lead actor in a book or a movie. But these words came from the mouth of a real person. His real words at the height of the situation where his wife was asking for emotional support. Their kid was often sick and she needed him so badly. Instead, he dramatically answered her with those shocking words!

With nothing and no one to care for but our own needs and wants. We were clingy and demanding of other’s attentions. We often would like to be the sole apple of the eyes of everyone around us. We are just innocent and literally a baby, without the ability to think reasonably and logically. Unable to realize the role which we are about to play in the circle of life.

But once we reached adulthood and maturity, we are also expected to gain maturity both in emotional and mental aspects of our being. Entering a relationship and be committed to it is not a baby thing. It takes a full grown man to make a choice and the decision to be committed to that relationship.

Also, being a father is not an accident. When you did what the grown ups and mature people are doing, you are expected to face the consequence and be responsible of whatever the outcome maybe.

No one ever told you or taught you to impregnate a woman. No one ever told you to make a woman fall in love and trust you. It was your choice, your decision. So stand by it like a real man. Words lacking in deed are nothing. Words can’t measure up to the real person in you any matter how dramatically uttered or written they are. Nor it can justify a shortcoming and failure. It is the deed that counts at the end of the day.

Accepting responsibilities is not measured by how beautifully or dramatically words are spoken nor is it something that can be ignored and neglected. Playing the roles that we chose responsibly, no matter how difficult or complicated, defines the father or husband or a mother or a wife that we are on this matter.

In a class full of ardent students who are in their defining stage of education, looking at their enthusiasm and joy, their teacher becomes wishful and exclaims that the best life is ‘student’s life’. At that particular time, it was quite astonishing and hard to believe her but now those events run wild in my imagination.

That busy buzzing class was mine and the teacher was addressing to us, the first year university students who were attending their very first semester. Indeed how true she was, rich in experience of life and education.

‘Old jeans and guitar’ are symbolic of educational life of youth. Basically, these lines are from a famous pop song which became popular last decade. Even now, we don’t forget to sing this song. ‘We stand tall, in our life only because of education’ admits a young intellectual, Afshan. In fact, many young girls and boys across the globe like her are submitting their facts on education. ‘My educational institution has become a part of my life and it is hard to part’, says Mohiuddin, a final year engineering student.

Yes, of course he is right in his sense of feeling but one has to leave it for better prospects in life. One such bold incident happened in my class when my political science teacher was teaching

us. She was very loud and open in lectures. She taught us whenever in life learn to take

decisions, if you can’t take

a single d e c i s i o n , t h r o u g h away your

convocation certificate in dustbin.

She was very clear that students must make use of their education wisely, take right decisions in life, and choose appropriate careers in life and thus making a good life - she really meant. That’s what we all want from education. Make use of it to its optimum. ‘Only a good career in life can make jobs happier’ say consultants around us. They happen to be the market readers. That is striking truth of life.

Education is taught in every religion and culture. Holy Quran and Hadith clearly stated to gain knowledge. Holy prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) said ‘gain knowledge even if you have to go to China for that’ This shows the importance of education in Islam.

Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) also educated poor slave girls. First, he gave them education and then freed them forever. Here, we get a clear lesson for female education. It is very regretful to see young girls abandoned from education. It’s the responsibility of all of us to spread female education and awareness. Let them educate and see the difference around you. Not only she gets educated, but also the whole family gets wisdom and spreads the light. Education is for all and it is declared by United Nations and across the globe to spread education around you.

Well, on the contrary to every prospective of life, student life is the best phase of life. It lets you learn and have fun on other side of life too.

Whether you are in school, college or university, any student can make a difference. It does not matter whether you have old jeans or a guitar. You definitely have friends and teachers on your side.

You have the best memories of lifetime to gather. Every time you recollect those memories you will definitely smile and yearn those days. How can one forget those slam books, photos, movies and time spent together with friends.

The knowledge to lead us to right path!!

Two women were sitting, wondering in silence, like philosophers or mystics do. They've been pondering life, and the ways of people. They're known around town for their wisdom, and their unusual behaviors! They always sat there in the bus Station, waiting for no bus, and going no where. When night falls they gather their sandwich wrapping paper, and empty paper cups, and go home.

Other women always wondered if the the twin sisters had any kitchen, kitchen appliances, any dishes, or cups at home. No body has ever entered their small house. People often told themselves that the house was too small to receive visitors. However, they still loved the odd twin sisters. They loved the honesty in their smiling faces, and loving greetings.

The twin sisters were sitting in silence that morning, like every morning, thinking, praying, and meditating. A woman came by. A strange woman from out of town. She thought they were beggars, so she gave them few pennies, and walked away. The strange woman was

crying silently. One of the sisters have seen her teary face, looked at her sister, and together they called on the woman.

" Mam! Can I help you?"

The woman was surprised, but she desperately needed help, so she came back to the twin.

" Who are you?"

" We are the twin sisters. We are the heart and the lungs of this town. We love everyone, and help everyone. Here you are, we don't need your pennies. Please, ask a question, a favor, anything."

She was too sad and too lonely to hesitate, so she asked:

" Tell me, why do people come in and out of our lives? Why do they leave us when we need them the most, and why do they stay when all they do is hurt us?"

At this, the twin sisters looked at each other, as if to gather some knowledge, or some strength.

They needed lots of strength because their answer was going to shock the lady stranger.

" Love!" They said it in one voice. Then burst into laughing.

Their laughs were so enchanting that the sad lady was laughing along. But she still wanted to know more.

" How? How love make them stick around when they are unwanted or leave when they are craved?"

" All people you meet are your soul mates. Forget about your lover or your husband or your friend. Consider your difficult boss, your abusive brother, or your harsh parent. These are all soul mates. Whatever they do, they do to teach you about life and make you stronger, humbler, and more forgiving. That is true love!"

" What about those we really love, and cherish. Why do they leave?"

" It is because when need enters the picture, love fades away. Need, is foolishness, well- dressed and well- presented. So love, and don't need, and you have got the whole world to love you back!"

The Middle Eastern countries in the vicinity of the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Peninsula are collectively called the Gulf States and include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, and Oman. (Some would include Iraq and Iran, although Iranians are Persians, not Arabs.) In Arabic, this area is called the Khalij (khaLEEJ), and the music, dance, and clothing from that area are all loosely referred to as Khaliji (kha LEEJ ee).

Perhaps because of the harshness of desert climates, many Middle Eastern people are inclined to nap and rest during the afternoon to escape temperatures that can be exceedingly high. As a result, they are even more inclined to entertain and socialize well into the wee

hours of the morning when the weather is more pleasant. Extended family is extremely important in Gulf countries, and the women share warm, close relationships—perhaps even more so because many societies there continue to segregate men and women. Singing, dancing, and telling stories are ways that women strengthen those relationships and entertain

themselves as well as preserve their rich heritage.

One of the notable dances of this area is the gentle, refined women’s dance that, like other folk dances, is often seen at weddings and social functions that are celebratory in nature. It is known by a number of

different names; for example, in Kuwait it is sometimes called samra or samri; in the United Arab Emirates it is known as raqs nasha’at; and to outsiders it is usually identified as Khaliji dance, Saudi dance, or raqs na’shaar (“dance of the hair”).

The most famous and universally recognized movement of this dance is the hair being swung and tossed in time with the music. Although it has become fairly common for modern Arabic women to cut their hair, long hair has always been a symbol of female beauty in the Middle East and is still greatly admired. Those who are most revered are skilled dancers with hair that reaches at least to the waist, or even to the knees and below, who are able to send their tresses flying in breathtaking arcs, figure

The footwork is fairly simple, as the dancer takes small steps forward on the flat of one foot while staying on the ball of the other foot, which is locked into place just behind the flat foot that leads forward.

This is done first with one foot leading, then reversed so that the opposite foot leads. It gives a sort of hopping or limping look as the dancers bob along together in time with the music. There are also steps that deliberately give a very smooth, gliding illusion, especially since the feet and legs are entirely hidden from view. Some of the motion of the dance originates from the shoulders and can range from relaxed

accents alternating between the left and right shoulders to delicate shimmies.

Hip movements are very subtle and mirror the shoulder movements as the dancers move gracefully around the floor; no sort of hip scarf or belt is ever worn. The dancer holds much of her garment up with her hands; otherwise she would trip on it since the back of it trails onto the floor. The dancer manipulates the weighted fabric, often rhythmically swinging it from side to side.

The Khaliji music has a unique sound and is often known as Saudi music in Western countries. Women have their own variation of it. As most social gatherings in the Gulf States are still segregated, the women

eights, and circles in perfect rhythm with the music.

Certainly, the sight of rows of women with long hair performing this dance in their splendid costumes is an awe-inspiring and unforgettable spectacle.

One of the most striking features of raqs nasha’at is the garment associated with it, one that is worn for no other purpose. The thobe neshal is a very long, rectangular caftan-type garment that is usually made of

brightly colored silky fabric. From the keyhole-shaped neck opening to the hem, a wide vertical panel runs all the way down the front of the dress. That panel, along with all the edges (sleeves, neckline, and hem) are heavily embroidered in gold or silver and often embellished with beads and sequins, a decoration that also adds considerable weight to the garment.

Because they are quite sheer as well as very long and loose, women bring their folded neshals with them in hand but do not wear them until they are going to dance. The neshals are pulled on over the head and

worn right over the clothes. The enormous sleeves have huge arm openings both at the shoulder and the wrist, and one or both sleeves can be draped over the head to form a veil that also creates attractive folds.

often have all-female bands to play at their parties, especially weddings.

While the melodies are typically very simple, the percussion is rich, layered, and syncopated. Usually, the leader (mutribah) plays the oud and sings the main melody, and those who sing the chorus play several different percussion instruments, in varying pitches and rhythms. It is common for the audience to sing along, clap, shout encouragement, and, of course, engage in the ever-present ululation, the zaghroota.

The women who provide music of this type are not generally judged by particular musical standards or criteria as they might be in Western countries, but rather by their ability to touch and move their audiences on an emotional level.

A live band is not always available, of course, so women also enjoy dancing to the recorded music of many popular Arabic singers. Though a number of songs are associated with the women’s dance, the most famous one is entitled “Aba’ad” and usually called simply “Leila Leila.” Written by a Kuwaiti composer (Yousif Mehana) and made popular by prominent Saudi singer Mohammed Abdou, it is almost synonymous with this dance throughout the Middle East.

can't be rushed into it. Even if it keeps lingering in the back of my mind always. I keep joking, fooling around on the sets, trying to push everything away for a later day scrutiny. I don't even want to acknowledge those dark corners of my insides as yet. And if at all I do it, I'll do it for no one else but myself. Not my wife, not my parents. Maybe my children - maybe just my son. Nobody else", - Amitabh Bachchan

Everyone at one point or other has idolized some celebrity and made them their role model. Each one of us has our own reasons to follow somebody and would love to be in their shoes.

In India, I admire two such individuals who have achieved success and are legends in their own field.

For me success is not just reaching the top, it also staying at the top for a considerable tenure and more importantly being modest and having their heads on their shoulders. My admiration for these two individuals is more with respect to how they carry themselves and manage the pressure of expectation probably from a billion strong fan base.

These two individuals do not need any introduction. They are Sachin Tendulkar and Amitabh Bachchan.

This article is dedicated to the man who personifies class and charisma, Amitabh Bachchan.

Initially, Big B was named Inquilaab, inspired from the famous phrase Inquilab Zindabad, during the Indian independence struggle, but was re-named Amitabh which means, "the light that would never go off.". It’s as though destiny had made sure he had a name which

suggested what he is to the film industry. He truly is the light which will never go off. Though his surname was Shrivastava, his father had adopted the pen-name Bachchan, under which he published all his works. Hmmm… just can’t imagine being a fan of “Inquilaab Bachchan” or “Inquilaab Shrivastava”. Guess then he would have been the BIG S or rather Super S.

This man who was laughed upon for his tall, lean image and ironically for his baritone voice, has rewritten the history of Indian cinema and to my mind there will never be any actor who is so complete when it comes to acting abilities.

The early 1970s saw him emerge as the “angry young man” of Bollywood cinema, and has since become one of the most prominent figures in the history of Indian cinema. His influence over the masses was so much that every young man wanted to be a rebel and display their angry side wherever possible.

Bachchan has won numerous major awards in his career, including three national film awards and thirteen Filmfare awards. He holds the record for the most number of Best Actor nominations at the Filmfare Awards. In addition to acting, Bachchan has worked as a playback singer, film producer and television presenter, and was an elected member of the Indian Parliament from 1984 to 1987. This is versatility at his best.

In his twenties, Bachchan started his career as freight broker for the shipping firm, Bird and Co., based in Calcutta. As destiny had to do what it has to do, he gave up this job to pursue a career in acting.

Bachchan made his film debut in 1969 in Saat Hindustani, a film directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, featuring Utpal Dutt, Madhu and Jalal

Agha. The film did not appeal at the box office though; Bachchan won his first National Film Award for Best Newcomer.

It took 15 flop movies before 1973, this year, one movie by Prakash Mehra in which he cast him as the lead role for the film Zanjeer (1973) as Inspector Vijay Khanna. Those where the times when romantic movies were the success mantra and this film was a sharp contrast, it established Amitabh in a new persona—the "angry young man" of Bollywood cinema, a reputation he was to acquire in pictures that followed it. Come to think of it the role was first offered to Dev Anand. I wonder what turn of fate would have materialised had dev anand accepted that role. We will never know.

However, 1975 was the year when he appeared in two films which are regarded as important in Hindi cinematic history. He starred in the Yash Chopra directed film Deewar, opposite Shashi Kapoor, Nirupa Roy, and Neetu Singh, which earned him a Filmfare Nomination for Best Actor. The film became a major hit at the box office in 1975, ranking in at number 4. Indiatimes Movies ranks Deewaar amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films. This is one movie which is so carefully grafted, the dialogues are ever green. To this day “Mere Pass Maa Hain” is as fresh as fresh can be.

Released on 15 August 1975 was Sholay, which became the highest grossing film of all time in India,. This is one complete movie; there is no character in this film which is not memorable. The action sequence, the songs, the casting, everything makes it a perfection waiting to be outclassed. They say Sholay ruined two people, Ramesh Sippy and Amjad khan. For, each time Sippy made a film they expected a Sholay and from Amjad they expected a Gabbar Singh. I still remember the death scene enacted by Amitabh Bachchan, its one of the best death scenes filmed and I for one cried watching this as a kid.

On account of this unprecedented run and success Amitabh encountered at this stage in his career, he was billed a "one-man industry" by the French director François Truffaut

While filming Coolie in 1982, Bachchan suffered a near fatal intestinal injury during the filming of a

fight scene with co-actor Puneet Issar. The fight scene required him to fall onto a table and then on the ground. However as he jumped towards the table, the corner of the table struck his abdomen, resulting in a splenic rupture from which he lost a significant amount of blood. This was a near death incident; this accident forced almost the entire country to go into prayers for this man and a long queue of people willing to donate blood to save this icon started forming outside the hospital. There was a point during the operation where he was thought to be no more and then a slight movement of his fingers gave a sigh of relief to the doctors. August 2 is regarded as the day when he got a new lease of life.

The director, Manmohan Desai, altered the ending of Coolie after Bachchan's accident. Bachchan's character was originally intended to die in the film but after the change of script, the character lived in the end. It would have been inappropriate, said Desai, for the man who had just fended off death in real life to be killed on reel life.

A 15 year press ban against Bachchan was imposed during his peak acting years by Stardust and some of the other film magazines. In his own defense, Bachchan claimed to have banned the press from entering his sets almost till the end of 1989.

Before entering the film industry, Bachchan applied for an announcer's job with All India Radio, although he was rejected. The same voice was selected as the background voice for the documentary ‘March of the Penguins’. Initially, Amitabh voice was meant to be only for the Hindi translation and the English script was to cater to the Indian audience. Morgan Freeman, did the voice for the English version for the international audience. Later on Amitabh’s voice was chosen for the international audience due to a more clarity in the diction.

Amitabh, was named Actor of the Millennium in a BBC News Poll ahead of such luminaries as Charlie Chaplin, Sir Lawrence Olivier, and Marlon Brando.

Of course this materialized more because more Indians voted than any other nationality. Nevertheless, it’s a title well deserved.

“It is imperative that there is one set of financial reporting standards for the world if the quality and comparability of investor information is to be protected. I am pleased to see the G20 renew its call for a single set of high quality global accounting standards,” James S. Turley, the global chairman and chief executive officer of Ernst & Young LLP, said in response to the G20 communiqué late last year.

Turley said: “The past 18 months have shown just how globally connected the economies of the world have become. Convergence is a critical step in countries moving to a single set of financial reporting standards. However, that alone will not achieve the goal of one global financial reporting language. All countries must ultimately commit to adopt IFRS.”

“If the world doesn’t coalesce and adopt common standards, then local political and industry influence are able to play one standard setter off of the other, creating a race to the bottom,” Turley said. “That is a losing prescription for global economic growth and development, not to mention transparency to investors.”

Turley acknowledged that some companies view IFRS as an additional cost initially but many more see the value in having one set of global standards. He said that the International Accounting Standards Board’s (IASB) Monitoring Board “was an excellent development” and that it was off to a good start. He added: “As the Board continues to evolve, it must reflect the G20 – rather than G7 – view of the world” as business is moving in that direction. Turley was encouraged by recent comments by the Securities and

Exchange Commission (SEC). “I expect that discussion to be culminating over the next weeks and months,” he said. Expanding on the issue, Ruth Picker, Ernst & Young’s Global IFRS leader, said: “One of the key pressures faced by the IASB is the potential conflict between the stated goal of convergence with the US Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the demands of many in Europe for the IASB to see their needs as a priority. This pressure has intensified because the US has yet to commit to the adoption of IFRS.”

She continued: “Until the US makes a commitment toward adoption of IFRS, the

pressure on the IASB to lower the priority placed on convergence with the US will continue to build.”

Mindful of such pressure, on 14 April 2010 the IASB and the FASB published a report on their work so far to improve and achieve convergence of International Financial Reporting Standards and US generally accepted accounting principles. They have a shared commitment to convergence by establishing a comprehensive work plan to complete their joint program by a June 2011 target and have recently accelerated and intensified their joint work.

Addressing questions about whether IFRS is in fact a truly global set of standards or is instead applied differently in each adopting country, Ms. Picker explained that some countries may have to call the standards by a different name because of local legislation but in many cases the text of the standards is identical to IFRS as issued by the IASB. She also noted that over the past five years, a body of interpretative guidance as to how to apply IFRS has developed, “greatly enhancing the consistency of application of IFRS around the world."

In conclusion,Turley commented: “The consistency in application of IFRS hasn’t just happened accidentally. It’s really important that there is strong effort by the issuers, the accountancy firms and the regulators to help drive consistent execution. There’s not just one global standard; it’s actually a global effort to ensure that the standard is applied consistently by everybody.”

One set of global accounting standards is imperative to protect information

What is life? I wished to understand life since I was 10 years old or may be younger than this or older than this. However, the meaning of life has changed for me at every age, at every moment and at every beginning. I sometimes ponder its’ me who has changed or its life. When I was ten years old, satisfaction to me was getting good grades, chocolates and when I moved to college, permanent joy came in the shape of great friends and great times, but now there are lots of things which bring happiness but not contendness. I feel the meaning of life was easy to find when I was young with time it’s just becoming more complicated. We learn as we move in life and we earn our own set of experience.

My friends always tell me that life can be dealt with attitude, it can be vision with high goals but at life you can’t look with tools like this. When you are faced with some difficult situations you just can’t remember to be positive and when you have pain, you can’t remember to smile at it.

Actually our attitude, our thinking doesn’t make life easy or better. The secret here is, when we grow we face many hardships, many problems and somehow unknowingly we pass through tough times. After so many trials we just remember that now when the door is knocked

by similar situations we have to welcome it with smile and optimistic thoughts. I feel we become wise with age, as life gives us many lessons to apply whatever we know and learn what we never knew. Whatever we feel, know and learn but still life is not to be taken too seriously. Don’t confuse yourself here; we try hard to learn the meaning of life, why we really do so. Can’t we just enjoy the present? Let me share with you this, Few years back, one of my friend forwarded me a SMS, which said something like, yesterday is the past, tomorrow is the future but today is a gift, that’s why we call it present. I was touched by it, and still remember it whenever I am feeling blue.

This holds so true in every scenario. Life is a simple and a short journey which doesn’t need any clarification on it subjects, just to be lived. I feel we humans have first made things difficult for ourselves and now we are finding ways to mend them. Don’t worry, this has come from ages, this will go in ages but you just have to live. We know so much because so much has already been invented, so much has been written, so much has been said and when we learn all these things we want to apply them even if we don’t need it. Last month I got an opportunity to attend a personality development workshop for two days. I usually go too such workshops with thought of learning something or may be catching up with latest trends. The resource faculty was discussing on controlling anger, controlling body language, learning professional behaviors, learning balancing act of life etc., but it all went over my little brain, I could not understand that hundred people sitting here are learning to control behavior during anger. My brain asked me who invented the first fight, who invented anger, who categorized that few things are difficult in life and few not. If such things never existed, I am sure the world would have been easy and free of complexities. Believe our life is easy and simple; we are just making it appear difficult by

applying all the masala’s (ingredients) we have seen and learnt.

I feel throughout our lives, we like what we don’t have and dislike what we have; this is where the concern actually arises. This is the root cause of all our concerns. I have realized a universal phenomenon that is, when we are in school we dream of attending a reputed college, when we are in college, we dream of entering a big firm and earning big bucks. When we enter such a company, we dream of getting married and having a family but when we have all that we want to go back to school and enjoy that time where we were carefree but we all know that can never comeback.

The most critical thing is time; everything could comeback at least for a while, for few fractions but time doesn’t. When it slips then we learn this lesson. So, I personally define life as time or time as life. The best of all is we should live in whatever is going, what ever we are being offered. At every step we get teachers, who give us lessons and then take the test, but time is the only teacher in the world which first takes the test and then teaches the lesson. It is strange but that is real world. Happiness doesn’t come by chance, a life well spent doesn’t come by luck and we have to work hard for it. Whatever we are doing just by adding a little pinch of things which we don’t want to do, life as a result becomes better. The only miserable thing in life no matter how contended we are there always exist few people we don’t like, few circumstances which are unexpected. So by complying with such situations and persons, we will generate happiness for ourselves. There is a golden rule which exist in the magnificent world which says just do one thing daily which you don’t like and life will turn beautiful. All I can say, life gives a lot, life takes a lot and it’s a circle. In the end life is simple which is just to be lived. We get happiness in every small thing, so just grab all you have around.

Italy is probably one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Anyone who has ever

seen Italy will tell you that, and even people who have just seen pictures will probably agree. That being said, just taking a holiday to Italy won’t be your best way to see the country. Far too many people just pick one place and stay there for two weeks (most likely Rome or Milan). However, it’s worth considering a different approach so that you get to really experience Italy, rather than just seeing it. One way to do this would be to take a tour of the country. This tour would be completely arranged by someone else depending on your specifications, and you wouldn’t have to lift a

finger to arrange it.

Therein lies the real power of a tour of Italy. Instead of spending hours booking hotels, flights, cars, etc. you just send your information to a tour operator and they will handle everything for you. They’ll book your tour of Italy so that you’re accompanied by guides along the way and so that you’re staying in the best hotels that the country has to offer. Instead of spending your time in overpriced tourist restaurants, you’ll be spending your time in authentic Italian restaurants eating local produce. What more could you possibly want?

From the northern part of the country where the big cities lie, to the southern part where you’ll find rural communities centered around farming and winemaking, Italy has a lot to offer almost anyone who decides to visit. Whether you’re looking to spend time on beautiful white beaches in the sun, or you want to spend your time shopping in Milan, there are really endless possibilities, and taking a tour of Italy allows you to do everything! People often feel constrained by the notion of the traditional holiday, where they spend two weeks relaxing on a beach in a tourist hotspot. This is not the best way to see Italy, and as soon as you realize your holiday doesn’t have to be constrained by “rules”

you’ll be able to really see Italy.

You can taste wine made by some of the best producers in Europe, or talk food with the real experts who have spent their lives cooking for huge families. Once you’ve done that, you can still go and spend time on the beach s o m e w h e r e . These things become possible when you have a tour guide with you and a tour operator has planned out your whole trip. Instead of worrying about whether the hotels you stay in are going to be of high q u a l i t y, you can rest assured because it will have been reserved by people who are experts on the area. They will know everything there is to know about the specific hotels you are staying in, so you’re sure to get the very best service possible.

Far too many people get ripped off when they

try and see lots of different parts of a country. At every turn there will be someone trying to exploit you for money since they know you are a tourist. Instead of just accepting this as the norm, use experts to handle the planning of your trip so that they can handle any

hassle that occurs.

When you have your tour guide with you, you’re instantly getting access to a huge wealth of knowledge about the area which you are visiting. Most of these tour guides will originate from that specific part of

Italy, and so they’ll be able to tell you everything you need to know about the history, the sights, and the people. There is simply no better way to find out about the culture of a particular

area than to take a tour with a local expert, who will probably be able to introduce you to the locals. Instead of jut being a tourist, you’ll be someone who is trying to learn about Italy, and that makes a big difference to people who you meet.

Taking a tour of Italy is a great thing to do. Use a reputable tour operator to ensure that you get the very best service possible, and utilize their professional advice to plan your perfect holiday. Instead of spending hours planning, just tell them exactly what you want to see, and they’ll fit your tour around that. Of course, you could also take a pre-arranged tour if you want to see a little bit of everything, these are also potentially cheaper than custom tours of Italy.

1. Keep a Log

This can be as simple as a little piece of paper on the fridge, or a page in your day planner. Just make a little checkmark, or dash on the piece of paper every time you drink a glass of water. The log will help you keep track of how much water you have had in any given day. You’ll also be surprised how motivating it is to try to get those eight little checkmarks on there every day. Another idea would be to use little stickers instead.

2. Add Some Lemon Juice

I tend to get bored with drinking just water after a few days. Change things up and add a little flavor by adding a teaspoon or less of lemon to your water. You can also try some other fruit juices. Just make sure you are still drinking mainly water. Just a splash of juice should be enough to make things interesting and give the water some flavor without adding a lot of sugar and calories.

3. Try Some Club Soda

If you are craving the fizz of a soda, try some Club Soda. Most brands have a little too much fizz for me. I end up watering them down with – guess what – water. If you want to get really fancy, check your local grocery store for flavored club sodas. Alternatively, you can also add a splash of fruit juice to your watered down club soda.

4. Drink Some Water When You Feel Hungry

Unfortunately many of us have gotten so out of tune with our bodies that we feel hungry when we are actually thirsty. If you feel hungry, try drinking a glass of water first. You may just be thirsty.

5. Carry A Water Bottle

It’s much easier to drink water when you have it readily available. Carry a bottle of water around with you in the car, at work, while running errands, in the yard, and even while you are working around the house. You’ll be sipping away the water without even noticing it.

6. Drink More If You Are Working Out

We already touched on this, but it bears repeating. Make sure you drink a few extra glasses of water if you work out, or if you spend some time outside while it’s hot. Your body uses and needs more water when it sweats a lot. So don’t forget to fill back up on water during and after your exercise.

Just pay attention to how much you drink and implement some of these ideas if you don’t get the recommended eight glasses of water a day. Your body will thank you for it in the long run.

Are You Sure You'reGetting Enough Water?

Susanne Myers

You probably already know that it’s important to drink enough water. A minimum of eight glasses of water a day is recommended. You should aim for more if it is really hot, or you are working out and sweating a lot.

Getting enough water in your body will prevent you from getting dehydrated.

According to WEBMD the early signs of dehydration are increased thirst, dry mouth, sticky saliva and reduced urine output with dark yellow urine. You may also experience a lack of energy and a headache.

None of these sound very fun. I know it is hard sometimes to drink that much water; especially when sodas and coffee tempt us. However, to stay healthy and feel great, we should strive to drink those eight glasses of water a day.

Here are a few tips to help you remember to drink the water, and to make it a little more pleasant or interesting.

Step 1Split a pea-size amount of a Vaseline between the pads of your index fingers. Close your eyes, then gently smooth the petroleum jelly onto your eyelids and through lashes to liquefy mascara, liner and shadow.

Step 2Wipe a damp cotton pad across your eyes from the inner to the outer corners until makeup disappears. “You want some of the petroleum jelly to linger around your eyes,” Dr. Hellman says. “It leaves behind a hydrating, protective layer that takes the place of eye cream.”

Step 3FOR OILY SKINUse a glycolic acid–salicylic acid pad to wipe your entire face. b Peter Thomas Roth Max Complexion Correction Pads are useful. The salicylic acid deep-cleans pores and removes makeup, and the glycolic acid treats black heads.

Step 4FOR NORMAL-TO-DRY SKINUse a creamy, soap-free wash, such as c Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, to clean and moisturize at the same time. Apply a thin layer all over your face, then tissue or rinse off. Have flake-prone skin? Tissuing off without rinsing will give you extra moisture.

Hypertension during pregnancyHEALTH / womEn

This is a public education column and is not intended to be diagnostic or therapeutic. If you have questions regarding health, email them to [email protected]. Responses will be published in subsequent issues.

Dr. Nazia Nausheen

pregnancy-induced hypertensionThe classic description is that it is a condition occurring after the 20th week or 5th month of pregnancy in which two of the three of the following signs are present:

•Hypertension(highbloodpressure)•Proteinsinurine(proteinuria)•Swelling especially of face (ankles

swelling is not dangerous)

Most of the young women have a resting blood pressure of 110-120/60-70mmhg. There is some disagreement as to what may be regarded as the normal blood pressure during pregnancy. The standards of hypertension used in general medicine are not appropriate in obstetrics. A pregnant woman with a blood pressure of 140/90mmhg may be running into

danger and at 160/110mmhg might develop ECLAMPSIA which is one of the most serious complication of hypertension during pregnancy resulting in convulsions. Most of the time diagnosis of pregnancy-induced hypertension is made when upper reading increases by 30 points more, say 140mmhg and lower reading increases by 15 points more say 90mmhg.

Why it is important to know whether you have pregnancy-induced

hypertension?High blood pressure is a sign that the baby is under stress. Uncontrolled hypertension poses several risks to both the mother and the baby, such as:Complications for mothers

•May lead to maternal kidney failure•Breathingproblems•Seizuresorconvulsions•Stroke

Complications for baby•Lackof oxygen•Retardedgrowthintheuterus•Prematurelabor

Management •Once it is confirmed, the doctor

monitors the patient more closely with prescription of medicines and requires more frequent visits.

•Modifiedorfullbedrest.•Depending upon severity of the

condition admission in the hospital and sometimes early delivery may be required.

How to control blood pressure naturally?Apart from taking medicines a woman should

try to control blood pressure naturally with help of:

DIETAmerican heart association introduced a DASH plan (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) that includes:

• restriction of salt • favors potassium –rich vegetables

and fruits•morecalciumbutlowfatdairy

How to do it?•Optforwholegrains•Eat more fatty fish like salmon,

sardines twice weekly but avoid fishes high in mercury like tuna steak, king mackerel, and Swordfish.

•Eatmorefruitsandvegetables.Bananais a good source of potassium

ExerciseFor most pregnant women exercise is safe but ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN before starting any exercise program.

•Heavy workouts and aerobics are definite NO’s.

•Walkingisgreatlyrecommended•Swimming is an excellent exercise

during pregnancy.Meditation Meditation manages stress which is a major cause for high blood pressure. So take life easy!!Gentle back Massage Finally a gentle 10 minutes back rub never hurts!!!!

In this article instead of going into medical details of hypertension I will tell you what you REALLY need to know!!! There are different scenarios in which women may have hypertension either before getting pregnant known as the chronic hypertension or they can be having it for the first time during pregnancy. We will discuss here only pregnancy induced hypertension.

1. Eat fruit before every meal. In a Pennsylvania State University

study, people who munched apples 15 minutes before lunch ate about 187 fewer calories.

2. Order one brunch entrée to share. Who can finish that giant omelet, anyway?

3. When making mac and cheese, resist temptation and prep just half the box. Save the rest in a ziplock bag for next time.

4. Use your grandmother’s Joy of Cooking and you’ll save an average of 506 calories over three meals, according to a recent Cornell University study. The secret: Smaller portion sizes and lower-calorie ingredients were called for back then.

5. Instead of a Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha for your afternoon pick-me-up, order coffee with a little milk and a dusting of chocolate.

6. At happy hour, drink diet colas and back away from the bowl of stale snack mix.

At breakfastUse skim milk in place of

flavored Coffee-mate in your two morning mugs.

Eat a bowl of high-fiber cereal and you’ll consume fewer calories all day.

Order bacon, not sausage, with your eggs.

Choose a yeast doughnut instead of a denser cake one.

At lunchUse 1 tablespoon of mayo

and 1 tablespoon of low-fat cottage cheese to make tuna salad.

Put barbecue sauce, not honey mustard, on your chicken sandwich.

Top your burger with onions, lettuce and tomato and skip the cheese.

Ask for the 12-ounce kid-size cola instead of the 21-ounce medium at the drive-through.

Slim down your sandwich by using Whole Wheat Sandwich Thins instead of whole-wheat bread.

Toss your salad with 1 tablespoon of dressing until every lettuce leaf is coated. You’ll get away with using half the usual serving size. Try this trick at dinner too.

Skip the crackers and shredded cheese on your chili.

At dinnerTrade butter for a flavorful

Making meatballs? Mix half the amount of ground beef the recipe calls for with half as much cooked brown rice.

Instead of two slices of medium pepperoni pan pizza, choose thin-crust.

When munching on chicken wings, don’t toss the bones midway through. Seeing the evidence of your feast may help you eat less, studies show.

For a snackTrade ½ cup of premium

Ordering a cone? Make it the sugar, not the waffle, kind.

Grab a Light & Fit yogurt, not a low-fat fruit blend.

Indulge in a slice of food cake drizzled with chocolate syrup rather than three cookies.

M Sizzling Arabic Rising Star I wanted to interview Lama from a long time but she was quite busy with the launch of her debut album. Now when her debut album “3thih 7ouriatouh” has triggered International attention, first by CNN and then by the BBC and MBC, as not only the mix of three languages is widely interpreted as a bridge of cultures and a dialogue between societies, but as the music includes different genres and instruments in a contemporary setting, that have attracted a wide section of the young audience across the Arab world. This month we bring Lama Hatem exclusively for our readers. It was a great experience for me to interview Lama and here I share with you our discussions:

What motivated you towards singing?

My love for music motivated me, but it was US American producers, who approached me during their visit to Bahrain in 2006 with John Legend to meet Michael Jackson and who persuaded me to make my first album. They were convinced, that I had the right charisma to be quickly realized and they have been very, very supportive since then. Ryan Bowser, who got a Grammy for Nelly’s “Dilemma” even wrote “Someone True” for my debut album “3tih 7ouriatouh” and I was offered a song by the producer of Kanye West’s “Diamonds Are Forever”.

How old were you when you knew you could sing?

Since my childhood days, I was attracted to music – we had a little band of five friends for several years and we spend summers mainly with our music. It was great fun, but I concentrated on my education and kept my music a hobby, till several years later and until I thought, I was ready to record my own album.

Tell us about your debut album?

“3tih 7ouriatouh” had great success physically and digitally. It was a best selling album upon release and its success got me the invitation to perform in the F1 Opening in Abu Dhabi 2009 by its UK organizers. Today, one year after the initial launch of the album, it still sells right after Amr Diab in Virgin and was compared with Fadel Shaker and Elissa in the number of sold CDs. I am particularly happy about this, as Rotana is selling their albums with approximately 4 USD at about half the price as I sell mine.

Who writes the lyrics for you?

I was co-writer on some of the tracks and was lucky to have really good people working with me on my songs, such as Ryan Bowser from the USA, Wissam Sabri from Egypt and Mc Jazzy from France. Nonetheless, I am known for knowing what I want (giggles) – I have my own ideas and thoughts and they reflect in my lyrics too. I could not have just accepted something ready made without putting my fingers into it…

What are your musical influences?

I listen to various genres and on my IPod you will find music from artists, that have nothing in

May 2010

29

common. Living in different parts of the world, definitely has influenced my musical work, that includes predominantly western sounds mixed with eastern instruments and rhythms from diverse origins.

In which languages do you sing?

I have recorded mainly in my native Arabic language, because I have a genuine feel for it, but I also recorded it English and French.

How is your music different from others?

(smiles) You’ll have to buy the record and to listen to it to see the difference. The Americans initially suggested working with Awtar Studio, a state of the art recording studio in Kuwait and the owner, Abdul Mohsen Al Sarawi, has been very nice and supportive. I would have loved to work with them, but there was some time constraint and we recorded at the studio of my publisher, Jean-Marie Riachi, in Lebanon. During the actual recording, the Lebanese studio was always complaining, that I am not satisfied fast enough and that I interfere too much into the musical production. Finally, we brought in a French musical engineer and I sat down outside beside him at the mixer to record, rather than in the high tech sound-proof room. I enjoyed the actual recording of this album and there is a lot of me inside.

Did you face any difficulties in releasing your first album?

Recording an album and to release it, is very costly. I had to use my own savings to make this little dream of mine come true, after reaching to resourceful Production companies in the Middle East has proven somewhat difficult. Mr Salem Al Hindi of Rotana was ready to distribute the album, but time was tight and I was not able to wait for some internal changes in Rotana. Melodi wanted the video clip and to make management for concerts, but as I have my own conditions not to accept to sing in any venue, this did not materialize. The first video then was broadcasted on Mazzika / Zoom, MTV Arabia and others. I finally released the album independently on my own through a Dubai based distributor. Luckily the album was very successful and triggered the attention of even foreign media such as CNN and BBC. I am thankful for having been invited also by Rotana

Khalijia, MBC, Dubai TV, Abu Dhabi TV and others and particularly see it generous from Rotana to put me live on their program and praise my album, although I am not one of their signed stars. It is definitely not easy to work without a manager or strong label, as some of the Arabic language media has a strict agenda, that promotes mainly three female Lebanese singers. Disregarding any difficulties, I have nonetheless received an outstanding response from the audience across the Middle East and beyond, that I am very proud of. I have many fans exchanging with me on my Facebook page and I appreciate the positive feedback.

What did you study?

I went to university in Beirut and Damascus and studied Business Administration and Arabic Literature.

What is your nationality?

I am an Arab and am proud of that. Nonetheless, I think no one can be classified by his or her nationality. People should be judged by how they work on themselves and how they behave towards others as an individual or vis-à-vis the society as an artist or public figure.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up between Syria, Lebanon and the United Kingdom, but left the Middle East after University and lived in Europe and Africa for several years. I met and learned from different cultures.

Where do you live now?

Today, I live between Germany and Bahrain.

Have you given any live performances? Where?

There is a lot of effort, work and money spend on developing yourself as an artist. The venue for any live performance should honor and reflect the same. Few months after the release of my debut album last year, I was invited to perform as opening act for Beyonce in Dubai and the Abu Dhabi F1 organizers used my Facebook Wall to sign me for the F1 event in Abu Dhabi. Unfortunately the concert in Dubai did not work out due to the terms and sadly I had personal circumstances just before the Abu Dhabi event, that did not allow me to perform. I regret missing out on the Abu Dhabi F1 event

a lot, because the UAE authorities and the organizers have made lots of efforts to hold a world-class spectacle, that will be remembered.

Who are your favorite singers?

There are many artists, that I admire. As an Arabic artist, I like Amr Diab, as he added something to the Middle Eastern music and developed it. I think, that he is sincere in what he is doing, he is doing it very well and he behaves like a star. I was raised listening to Barbra Streisand and Asmahan. I also love the Arabic vocals of Sabah Fakhry and I think it is not a secret, that I adore Michael Jackson as an artist and entertainer. I was fortunate enough to have actually met him in Bahrain. In my opinion he is the unparalleled King of Pop. No one dances, sings and entertains like him.

What do you fear the most?

Ignorance.

What would your motto be?

The future is for those, who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

Describe yourself in three words?

I am me !

If you went to the moon, what would you take with you?

Everything and Everyone I have – you as well if you like (laughs) … you need to have a crowd for a dance on the moon… don’t you think ? The better question would have been “what would you leave behind” (giggles).

What gives you satisfaction in your work?

I am generally full of life. I like it bustling and enjoy, when others share my artistic compassion with me.

What would you like to achieve musically?

There are no limits.

How long did it take to produce your first album?

It took me two and half years of hard work on myself and on the production, till I put the album on the market. I am a very demanding person and work constantly on developing myself.

What are you working on these days ?

I started in the gulf, have been welcomed and supported in the gulf and I want to give back something to this region by recording at least one song in gulf dialect. I also still work with the Americans on something for the International market. Apart from that, everyone is really expecting me to make a new Music Video – … I am still cooking on it…

INTERVIEW / SPoRTS

When did you start playing tennis and where?I first started playing tennis in 1998 at the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) Unity Club in the city Ahmadi. After a year, I participated in my first local tournament, sponsored by Kuwait Petroleum Company (KPC) in 1999, I finished in second place in the under 12’s division. Immediately after the tournament Coach Nadia Al Zarzour, the former coach of Al-Fatat Club, asked me to join her team. In the year 2000 I started playing in Al-Fatat Club and became a member of the Kuwait National Tennis Team where I represented my country in numerous tournaments throughout North Africa and the Middle East. In 2005, I decided to play more competitively and to do so I had to play tournaments abroad on my own. I played several ITF (International Tennis Federation) tournaments and I became the first Kuwaiti female internationally ranked player. In 2006, I started playing in Kuwait Club, where I still train today and there I got the opportunity to play with higher-level players and that helped improve

my game. Then 8 months later, August 2006, I moved to the US to start college. I played for three and a half consecutive years on the Colorado State University Women’s Tennis Team; it was a Division I and we played in the Mountain West Conference. I just recently graduated in December 2009 and moved to New York City to start graduate school and I have been playing in a club with highly reputable coaches and competitive players.

Who was your coach? My first coach was Reynaldo Malapitan at the KOC Unity Club, then Nadia Al Zarzour at Fatat Club, and I currently train with Coach Saud at Kuwait Club and Coach Abdul Khaliq at the Kuwait Tennis Federation.

Where did you study? What are you doing now?I have graduated from Colorado State University in December 2009 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Human Nutrition and Food Science. I just started a Masters of Science in Nutrition and Public Health at Columbia University this January, and I am

excepting to graduate in 2011. What are your plans with a degree in

Human Nutrition & Food Science?I have many things in mind that I would like to do when I come back to Kuwait. With a Dietetics and Public Health degree I would love to work with health awareness and to implement nutrition education programs. I would like to start in the schools to increase awareness among the young and upcoming generation to prevent obesity and chronic disease. Being an athlete myself, going through the training and competition experience, and having a nutrition background has amplified my interest in sports nutrition, therefore I am also planning to counsel athletes about nutrition.

Tell us of any achievements? My greatest achievement was to become the first and only Kuwaiti tennis female internationally ranked player. Participating in the Asian Games 2006 was a great achievement for me as well. Playing on the college team in the US was one of my best experiences, I got the chance to play competitively more often and it introduced me to new aspects of the sport physically and mentally that I was not exposed to in the past.

Who are your favorite tennis players?Growing up playing tennis my favorite players were Steffi Graff and Pete Sampras, and now my favorite player is Roger Federer.

What would you say is your strength? My strength is that I always try to be optimistic. I believe having a positive attitude and confidence has a great impact on your game, especially in a sport like tennis where your mind plays a major role. I always set goals not only in tennis but in life as well, and strive to achieve them. Also, playing on the college team has strengthened my teamwork and leadership skills.

What difficulties have you faced during practicing as a tennis player? The major difficulties I face in Kuwait as female tennis player are lack of facilities, support, and competition. There are not many courts and not much playing time is given to females. Lack of competition is another important factor; there is only one local tournament a year. In order for the sport to popularize and for the players to improve, the players have to be exposed to more competitions and experience playing with diverse players.

Do you think women’s tennis is unpopular in Kuwait and why?Yes, unfortunately there aren’t many female tennis players in Kuwait. As more women join the political field, and having four female members in the parliament, I really hope that female sports get more attention and support.

Do you have any memorable tournament?Playing in the Dubai Open in 2006. Going way back when I was younger, my parents took me to watch the Dubai Open Women’s final for my 12th birthday. As I watched Martina Hingis (one of my favorite players at that time), I wished that I could play that tournament someday. It took me 6 years for my dream to come true!

What are your future plans?I am planning to get a PTR (Professional Tennis Registry) coaching certification from the US and start to coach a young girls tennis team in Kuwait, which we lack at the moment. It is very important to start the sport at a young age in order to play competitively; many of the clubs are focusing on older teenage girls when it is very essential to work with the young generation who will become our future players.

What are you plans for the near future? Will you take part in upcoming tournaments?I am currently training in New York City and attending school. Once I graduate in 2011, I am planning to play more competitively for a couple of years then I want to start coaching a young girls team and work with them and try to popularize tennis in Kuwait, especially among females.

What helps you keep your motivation and love for tennis? My love for the sport, the challenge, and my family’s support. In order to succeed in anything, you have to have the passion to do so and my love and enjoyment of the sport is what keeps me going. Not necessarily the challenge of the game, but challenging myself to achieve my goals is what truly motivates me. My family has played a major role in my tennis career, and without them I do not think I would have reached this far.

Football is the most passionate and popular sport in Kuwait, but how do you manage to have a strong tennis base?Honestly, I enjoy football and I played it throughout

High School and it did help my endurance and stamina, but tennis has been my dominant sport since I was young. My family was very supportive, they supported me and gave me the opportunity to attend tennis camps in Tampa during the summers and supported me throughout all the tournaments I played locally and internationally. My dear friend Nawal Al Bader, a former Volleyball Player and the Head of Al-Fatat Club, has supported me throughout my tennis career as well. I am very fortunate to have an experienced athlete as a friend, I learned a lot from her experiences and she has definitely supported me all the way.

Coming from a hot climate, how do you manage it in US?It was difficult to adjust to the colder climate especially going to Colorado, which is in the Rockies, but my college years were the most memorable years of my life. Colorado is a beautiful state and I enjoyed all the outdoor activities both in the summer and winter. I was fortunate to experience hiking, rafting, skiing, and snowboarding. I always tried to keep myself busy with outdoor activities, I love to try new things, challenge myself, and I am a risk taker. Since it was much colder in the winter I had to play lots of indoor tennis, even during competitions, which I was not use to coming from Kuwait.

What message would you like to give to young girls in Kuwait?I encourage all the young girls to keep themselves busy with a hobby they enjoy. Physical activity is a very important factor of life for all ages, and a

person needs to do any form of physical activity for at least 60 minutes most days of the week. I would definitely encourage young girls to play a sport, it will not only keep them healthy but it will also teach them many life skills such as self independence, competitiveness, leadership skills, sportsmanship, teamwork skills, organization, time management, and it is very enjoyable.

Who else in your family plays tennis? My siblings played tennis when they were younger but none played it competitively, however, my family always supported me on and off the court, and that is what kept me going! My younger sister Nouf, just started to play Golf competitively and participated in her first local tournament this month and I would like to congratulate her for getting third place. My brother Ali also plays golf, and he is one of the Golf developers in Kuwait. He opened the first Golf Pro Shop in Kuwait, Golf Me, and distributes throughout the Middle East and North Africa. He sponsors the Kuwaiti Golf team and junior teams in the GCC countries. Golf is an upcoming sport not only in the Kuwait but throughout the Middle East and it is becoming more popular.

Do you read Citypages in the US? And how do you like it?Yes, and I really enjoyed reading the previous three issues. Having the option to view the magazine online gives the Kuwaiti’s who live or go to school abroad the ease to stay in touch and connected with the events and people in Kuwait. I would like to thank City Pages very much for this interview.

Sophie ParouMeeting with

please tell us a little about your origins.Well, I am French and belong to a place called Orleans, which is a city situated about an hour and a half from Paris in the heart of France. Orleans is the capital of the Loire Valley region (a Region with a great reputation for its Chateaux) and is famously known as The City of Joan of Arc!

How long you have been here in Kuwait?I have been here for the past nine years.

Cp: That’s quite a long time… why did you originally decide to come here?It is a long story. In fact, I was just seventeen years old when I went to Dublin for my higher studies and, whilst I was there, I met some Kuwaiti students who told me things about the richness of Arab Culture. These things were so interesting that I soon became drawn towards Arab countries. After the completion of my studies I went to London for work and met up again with more native Arabs who in turn became my friend. At the same time I felt a spiritual inclination towards Islam, and I was enthusiastic to learn more about the Arab world. All these incidents combined together to make a positive impact on my mind and paved my way towards Kuwait. I visited other countries in the region- like Dubai in the UAE - but decided to stay and make my home in Kuwait.

The story of Saint Joan of Arc is a fascinating one, and is well documented. She is mostly remembered for her leadership of the French army to victory

over the English in their invasion of Orleans, and for being burnt at the stake when she was just 19 years old, having been wrongly accused of practicing witchcraft. But she was also greatly blessed with a sensitive and spiritual temperament, and is quoted as saying that “One life is all we have and we live it as we believe in living it. But to sacrifice what you are and to live without belief, that is a fate more terrible than dying”. Such sentiment might be similarly expressed by another export from Orleans who has made her home in Kuwait. Mademoiselle Sophie Parou is the Founder and General Manager of F.A.M.E. Co., and also the author and publisher of a monthly compilation of creative writings entitled “The World of Nebula in 4 Colors”. Starting with the May issue, Sophie will also be making regular contributions to the pages of this magazine, so by way of an introduction we grasped the opportunity for an exclusive CityPages interview...

It is often suggested that many “Westerners” are not much interested in the Middle East, so how did your interest develop?I guess there must be something special about Kuwait for there is ! But originally and once again , maybe it was the influence which from which I benefitted at the age of seventeen (I even took an active role in the “Liberation March for Kuwait” which was held in Ireland.) After finishing my work of eight years in London, I returned to France and launched a company which acted as a commercial agency for companies in the Middle East including Kuwait. However, I soon realized that I couldn’t successfully adapt the methods and environment, and having visited Kuwait two times on the second occasion, i decided i needed to come and settle here. Parallel to that, after two years of settling in France after i was done with London, on a personal level, i saw that i could no longer integrate myself in the French system and having been surrounded by Middle East arab natives since teenage life, i was drawn to more wider horizon outside the borders...

What do you do for work in Kuwait?Having started a company in France, I relocated to Kuwait and established Middle East and Food (M.E.A.F.) here in the summer of 2001. With

expansion came a change of name to F.A.M.E. Co. which is an acronym for “France and Middle East”. My company specialises in the import and distribution of pastry and bakery ingredients and solutions, and has become the one of the premier supplier in this area with the largest, most famous and exclusive portfolio of French food and food-related product . I am proud that F.A.M.E. Co. not only strives to offer the most economical service to our clients, but also that we are committed to the promotion of a health-conscious lifestyle through provision of the highest standards of food quality.

With such a business pedigree, it seems logical that you must have a degree in either Business Management or in Food Sciences ... so what, exactly, is your educational background?Funnily enough, it’s neither! I actually have a degree in Linguistics Studies.

When did you start writing? My earliest recollection is that I started writing at the age of twelve when my mother bought a diary for me. However, according to my friends, I had been writing creatively even before that.

An English definition of a Nebula is “a combination of stars, gas and dust that constitute the universe”. But, what does

Nebula mean to you?A World of Nebula in 4 colors simply is the metaphor of the “private word” or what some would call the “private garden” everyone has....

At first I used to write only for myself, but my friend Omar in particular motivated me to make my writing available for others to enjoy as well. Like all new writers, I was worried about the public’s reaction to my work when it was first published, and was grateful for the great support I received from all my friends at that time.

What is the significance of the number 4 in the title? To be perfectly honest, I don’t know. But when I started writing and compiling the collection, i was being tagged sort of speech, by the number 4 for at that time, i move out and my residential block number was 4, my street number was also 4, the month was a 4 and so many other things were happening always bringing forth that number in particular ! So i suppose i trusted in this number which inspired me to account the amount of colors of the Nebula itself to being 4.

Overall , what would you say is the purpose of A World of Nebula in 4 colors ? The purpose of "A World of NEBULA in 4

Page 36: May 2010 Volume 5

36

INTERVIEW / wRITERcolors" is simply about Sharing (with a capital ‘S’); about encouraging more freelance writers to be inspired and to follow their dreams, especially in a market where too few artistic work are being expressed; about introducing a new concept of access to literature in Kuwait through coffee shops and other places; and, importantly, it’s about having freedom of expression !

What messages do you hope to convey to your readers?I am pro-French and patriotic, of course, but I am a humble person and strongly believe that life is not based on color or nationality. Sometimes, when I meet people during the course of my daily life, I give them invisible names and write about them. It is my view that every person has different levels of energy. Some of them catch my attention more than others and that’s how i come to I write about them.

Who is “Denise” to whom a dedication is made in every editions of A World of Nebula in 4 colorsmy mother who passed away some many years ago...

What is the source of motivation for you? Some people hold the opinion that all writers or artists in a larger sense are fuelled by drugs, but that simply isn’t true. But I suppose you could say that music is my drug and a great motivational source for me.

Would you say that Arabic Music is an inspiration to you?I usually don’t listen to Arabic Music except for the Kuwaiti group Miami which does have some pretty good beats... Mostly when i write, I like to listen to songs from the medieval period.

Do you have a favourite writer?I admire the work of Paolo Coelho, who is a modern influential Brazilian lyricist and novelist but i have a large list of other writers extremely interesting too such as Yeats, Borges who which writing style amuses me alot, Alexandre Jardin ect..

Up until now, you have not written a book. Why is that?At present my schedule is far too busy and would not allow me enough time to write a

book, although I do have the intention to write a book in future. I am currently writing and publishing on monthly basis, and distributing this literature free in a number of different places which include coffee shops, such as Columbus Café, Café Supreme, Blue Lounge, True Value Café, The Early Bird Café, and Sketch, and also in other locations like GUST, BLK, British Play House, Virgin Megastore, AFK, and AUK…

How do you manage all this?I am lucky to have the support of a wonderful team of volunteers such as my friend Jiscard El Khourybut And Naser who are a huge help every month and have helped me with the design and layout for NEBULA.

Is it true that you also do some charity work?Yes, we are trying to help the less fortunate through our writings and we sell promotional items like T-shirts, Key Chains, Caps and (importantly for those who like to read) we sell bookmarks, too! One half of the proceeds from these sales is used to fund the activities of “The World of NEBULA in 4 Colors” whilst the other half is donated to the Orphanage of Kuwait and the Friends Club (Women with Mental Illness).

So how can people find you?Finding us is not difficult. Anyone can reach us through Facebook, where we have our own page. Alternatively they can e-mail us at [email protected] and they can contact us by telephone on either

25639628 or 66085674.

I should also give a reference to my Company’s website -www.famecopro.com – for anyone interested in creating fine French gateaux and patisseries!

What message you would like to give to aspiring young writers?I encourage all writers to write, as it is the best way of self-expression. Don’t be shy and share your thoughts with all.

Finally, if you could offer just one piece of advice to the readers of Citypages, what would that be? That’s easy. I love to read, and reading is important, so I would like to encourage everyone to read literature as much as possible.

Muhammed Ali Jinnah (1876 - 1948) Vivian Leigh (1913 - 1967) Gibran Khalil Gibran (1883 - 1931)

What could these people have in common? What could these people have in common?

INTERVIEW / DoCToR

Can you please tell us about your recent campaign launched by your organization?TB has been around us for a very long time. My research indicates that it was even found in the remains of Pharaohs. In this modern age, however, it has sadly been forgotten. Therefore, the main objective of this campaign has been to educate people to prevent TB from happening rather than diagnosing and curing it. Nowadays TB can be a curable disease but, still, many people have TB and many others continue to fall victim to it all around the world. Our principal motive is to inform people about this danger which is around

them, and to provide them with the information that will help them to avoid contracting TB.

You are displaying three photos of famous personalities from relatively recent history ... how are they connected with your campaign? It is very interesting that we have carefully selected these three prominent figures from history. Vivian Leigh was an English actress; Khalil Gibran was a Lebanese American artist and writer; and Mohammad Ali Jinnah was a Pakistani Political leader. Each of them died as a result of TB. It is my hope that by reference to these prominent figures it will be easier for people to understand just how

old the disease is, and that it spares no one ... TB has no regard for race or nationality. These days people are bombarded with a mass of information related to different diseases, but a lot of the literature provided is simply scaring people by not providing them with simple and productive information regarding these diseases.

How can someone become infected with TB?To make it very simple ... it is just like catching flu, and anyone can catch it. People should have the knowledge that there is a known enemy in the air; they should keep the doors of their body strong and protected, not allowing the enemy to enter and

Vivien Leigh, Lady Olivier was a beautiful and acclaimed English actress who was once married to renowned actor Sir Laurence Olivier. She won her first Best Actress Academy Award for her outstanding and memorable performance as Scarlett O’Hara in “Gone with the Wind” (1939) and then a second Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Blanche DuBois in “A Streetcar Named Desire” (1951).

Mohammad Ali Jinnah was a 20th century lawyer,

politician, statesman, and the founder of Pakistan.

Jinnah served as leader of the All-India Muslim League

from 1913 until Pakistan's independence on August 14,

1947, and was Pakistan's first Governor-General from

August 15, 1947 until his death in September 1948.

Gubran Khalil Gubran bin Mikha'il bin Sa'ad is more popularly known simply as Kahlil Gibran, and was a Lebanese American artist, poet, and writer. He is chiefly known for his 1923 book “The Prophet”, which is a series of philosophical essays written in English prose. Gibran is considered by many to be the third most widely read poet in history, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu.

The Answer: All three suffered and died from Tuberculosis disease (TB) related conditions. The Answer: All three suffered and died from Tuberculosis disease (TB) related conditions.Vivien Leigh suffered recurrent bouts of chronic tuberculosis, with which she was first diagnosed in the mid-1940s. Ultimately the tuberculosis claimed her life and she died, aged just 53, in 1967.

Khalil Gibran’s sister, Sultana, died of tuberculosis at the age of 14. His elder brother, Peter, died of the same disease in the following year. Khalil, himself, died in New York City at the age of 48; the cause was determined to be cirrhosis of the liver and tuberculosis.

Through the 1940s, Mohammad Ali Jinnah suffered from tuberculosis, but only his sister and a few others close to him were aware of his condition. Aged 71, Jinnah died in 1948 at the Governor-General's House in Karachi, just over a year after Pakistan's independence.

This was the promotional image used by the Kuwait TB Control Unit in a recent campaign that was conceived to raise people’s awareness of the disease in an easy to relate form. CityPages had the privilege of meeting Dr. Awatif Al-Shammari, who is Head of the TB Control Unit in Kuwait’s Ministry of Health, to discuss and learn more about the disease...

harm them. TB is a bacterial disease and is very stable. Luckily, it doesn’t change its phase so is unlike a viral disease that can take any form.

How can we defeat this enemy?Basically, it can be defeated by self-prevention, and so our objective is to prevent infection rather than to cure it.That’s why we have selected a famous phrase penned by William Shakespeare, and have modified it and made it simple for understanding ... “TB or not TB”!

Why you have singled out TB as the subject for a campaign at this time?Kuwait is a country where different nationalities live and work together. Expats outnumber the Kuwaiti nationals, and many people come here from Asian countries where TB is prevalent. So the opportunities for different diseases to enter Kuwait are very vivid. As a result of globalization and ease of travel, people are more able to move around and carry different diseases with them. That’s why we are intent on informing people how they can prevent themselves from contracting such diseases. We have to acknowledge that doctors can’t do everything on their own and, therefore, we would like to make people aware and prepare them to fight against this disease. It is important to mention here that everyone has to accept a certain responsibility for their own health; that people can often fall sick as a result of their adopted behaviour. Doctors can only provide advice to modify their habits. Therefore, people will have to take responsibility to incorporate good health practices in their own lifestyles. If someone adopts the habit of smoking, doctors can only give advice to change the habit, and certainly cannot force anyone to stop.I accept that my message may be provocative, but this is the fact unless you make the doors of your body strong, and keep them locked so that such enemies cannot attack you.

What is the best protection against TB?The best way to guard against attack is to be healthy, which means adopting a healthy lifestyle and improving your immune system against harmful bacteria. Health care is linked to the economic state of a country. Often for individuals it is also impacted by a low income due to lack of work. But I should stress that doctors don’t have magic wands, and even the medical professionals can, themselves, be as vulnerable as everyone else. They certainly don’t enjoy any exemption from illness simply by being medics.

How often are such campaigns organized?

Due to budget limitations, campaigns are restricted to just one major campaign each year, but these are not simply one day events. “TB or not TB” was scheduled to run for a full four weeks! Of course we would like to spread our messages even more widely and, with this in mind, we will be launching an informative website very soon - first in Arabic and later in English.

Are you able to attract sponsorship, as this is such an important cause? Yes, our main sponsor for this year’s campaign has been Boots. Last year’s campaign was also sponsored by Boots, and also by Virgin Megastores. We owe a great debt of gratitude to our sponsors, and would really like to thank all of them. I should also highlight that we selected such sponsors particularly for their attraction to youth. Our target audience is also youth because the majority of Kuwait‘s population is young, with a greater ability to receive the message and spread it. Consequently, for maximum effect in getting the messages across, we are also utilising modern communication tools such as facebook and YouTube.

How many TB patients are there, currently, in Kuwait?Actually, the incidences of TB are reflected in percentages in preference to numbers. According to a recent survey 11% of the population is infected with TB, of which 3% are Kuwaiti citizens and 8% are expats.Although it is not an alarming situation, we would like to abolish it totally. It is true that TB is curable but it can take a long time for the body to recover, with recovery periods lasting for anything between 6 months and 2 years and, naturally, nobody likes to be receiving treatment for such a long time.

So how can we protect ourselves from this disease?I can outline four steps which can be helpful for prevention:

1. Awareness – make sure you know about the dangers.

2. Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle, which also means “No Smoking”!

3. Vulnerable people should avoid contact with anyone known to be infected.

4. Maintain a healthy and well balanced diet.In addition, I would like to say that nobody should be shy to ask the doctor to check them for TB.I always like to make the message easy to understand, so my advice is that, if someone has a cough that lasts for more than two weeks, they should get themselves checked for TB in the nearest clinic.

It’s possible that CityPages’ readers will have watched the movie “Moulin Rouge“, in which the character played by Nichol Kidman constantly coughs and ultimately dies. This was a modern remake of an old movie, and in the days in which the movie was set TB was more common, so it was shown commonly in the movies to spread the message.

Do people still die from contracting TB?As I said previously, TB is curable but you should make sure that it is not detected too late. There are two types of TB:1. Normal TB, which is easily curable.2. Bone TB, which is not always curable. In these cases, a blood culture is analysed to determine whether or not a medicine is available to fight the specific strain contracted. Sadly, this can sometimes result in bad news for the patient.A common myth is that, by having a BCG vaccination, you are protected from contracting TB. Unfortunately, the latest research suggests that the BCG vaccination is ineffective and that it only prevents complications caused by TB. That’s why in countries like USA, and in a few other countries, BCG vaccinations are no longer given.

When did this year’s campaign begin?Throughout the world, March 26th is recognised as World TB Day because on this particular day Robert Koch discovered the bacteria. So it was on the same date this year that we started our campaign.

What message would you like to give to people, and to companies, to support your cause? My message to everybody is to encourage them to adopt a healthy lifestyle, and to go to their doctors for a check up, as doctors will not come knocking at their doors. My message to companies is to please support our TB program by providing donations and promoting awareness. Companies can make it a part of their corporate social responsibility programmes. Treatment of TB is free from the government, but funds are required to generate awareness and my request to the media is therefore to provide help with spreading the message. I am grateful to CityPages for taking the initiative and highlighting this issue. They have done their part and, hopefully, others will also want to participate in furthering our campaign.

Keep Kuwait Clean

May 2010 May 2010

PEOPLE

48 49

You are obviously still a young man… so are you in salaried employment, or are you still engrossed in your studies?I am in the middle of a Degree course at the Oklahoma University in America, studying hard to attain my Bachelor Degree in Meteorology. I have already completed three years of the course, but have one more year of hard work remaining.

Let’s talk about ‘Operation: Keep Kuwait Clean’ … can you tell us how it all started? It was a group of eight people, including myself, who got together and started this movement. This nucleus comprises an equal mix of four boys (Yousef Khalfan, Abdul Raheem Wafadar, Musaed Bu Karam, and myself) and four girls (Manayer Salmeen, Maali Salmeen, Reem Bourenane, and Sahira Ladha) and, in actual fact, the initiative to form such an action group was started two years ago! The first two beach cleans were undertaken in July 2008 but they were not well-supported and met with limited success. At that time we did not have funds available to adequately resource the

We selected the beach adjacent to the TGI Friday Restaurant on Arabian Gulf Street as the location for this first task, and publicized a time for the activity from 4pm until 7pm on Saturday, 3rd April.

How many volunteers actually turned up to help on the day? The response was tremendous, and we received very good support from around a total of between 250 and 300 volunteers who had gathered there specifically for the cause. Although we had publicized the event to take place between 4pm and 7pm, the volunteers actually started to arrive from as early as 2pm. After all the preliminary work, we started the beach clean in earnest at 5pm and it was finished by 7pm. Interestingly, although our target age group was from 15 to 25 years, we welcomed people from all age groups who came along and gave their time both willingly and freely. Everyone contributed to complete the task and generated what also became quite a social event, which proves that it’s possible to have fun

day, I would like to highlight the level of support given by Mr.Mishal Al Azmi, who provided us with the municipality trash collection trucks as well as 15 employees to help with the work. Special thanks are also extended to Dr. Abdulwahed Khalfan, who managed all the media and newspaper coverage for us; and to Engineer Abdulamer Bahrouh and Mona Salmeen, who generously provided the financial donations. I would also like to mention the Kuwait Choppers Group who really helped us, and also Mr. Fahad Al Sharhan, Schlumberger, Foazi Hayat, Mohammad Hatem, E-quate, Red Bull, and of course all the Blogs that gave us free coverage.

You mentioned a financial donation…why was that required? The funding enabled us to make T-shirts, lanyards, posters, signing sheets and all the other stuff which was required for this work.

Are you intending to organize more beach cleans and, if so, how often do you plan to do this?

Is it true that our polluted beaches can affect turtles?Mr. Ali Al Hafiz from the Turtle Saving Group was with us during our campaign, and told us that turtles couldn’t lay eggs on these types of beaches. Even worse, he told us that the turtles die when they eat any of the plastic bags that are left abandoned.

What are your future plans?Well, as I already mentioned, we hope to run regular monthly beach cleans, and then I will be going back to the States in September for the completion of my studies. In my absence, the rest of the team will take good care of the project, because in this team all are equal, and equally capable, to take the responsibility.

What message you would like to communicate to our readers? Each person can make a difference, and that difference will create awareness and a sense of responsibility. Kuwaiti and Non-Kuwaiti youth should take responsibility and collaborate for this noble and important cause.

Few people would disagree that Kuwait has a problem with litter but, sadly, there are equally few who take action to do anything about it. Of course, we can all accept a personal responsibility and take care not to simply discard our own litter and rely on the expectation that others will clear up after us – by disposing of our own litter correctly (instead of following the all-too-common local practice of throwing it out of car windows, dropping it on the streets, or leaving it on the beach) we could show a greater respect to each other, our community and our environment by making such an easy contribution towards a cleaner, healthier environment. But this will only happen on a large scale if everybody’s awareness is raised through education and direct action.

A number of initiatives have taken place to clean up Kuwait’s beaches, but these tend to be infrequent or simple “one-offs” that have been organised by local charities and some of the larger companies (recent projects that spring to mind include those organised by Agility, and by the Environment team at KNPC in association with the Animal Friends League of Kuwait and Kuwait Divers) and there is also an annual beach clean at Shuwaikh that is organised by the Japanese Society in Kuwait alongside the Kuwait Environmental Protection Society, known as “Operation Turtles”.

But it was a recent event run by a group of young people who call themselves “Operation: Keep Kuwait Clean” that has really started tongues wagging. Their April beach clean attracted support through a slick publicity campaign which included insertions on numerous web Blogs; their supporters page on facebook has around 1300 members; and the event itself was well reported by both newspaper and television. To find out more CityPages chatted with Mr. Hamad Bahrouh, who is one of the group’s founding members, and one of the key figures in its growing success...

task, and were reliant on our volunteers bringing their own trash bags, gloves and any other useful tools. This time we approached the project with renewed enthusiasm and the knowledge of lessons learned from our earlier experience, and started to put a proper action plan in place around one month ahead of our action day in early April.

What is the motive that is driving this cause? Our principal objective is to keep Kuwait clean, but to achieve any success in this we need to spread an awareness of this issue among the youth; and awareness which is unfortunately lacking at the moment. Secondly, we also want to remind everyone that beaches are also an important part of our environment. Therefore, if we make an effort in trying to keep them clean it means that we are putting in effort for the overall benefit of our environment as well.

You mentioned that your action group met in early April, but exactly when and where did you stage the beach clean?

and enjoy yourself whilst, at the same time, taking action to do something positive for the community.

Was there much participation from the student community?Yes, we were supported by groups of students from ACK, AUK, and GUST, who came along and participated in the beach clean operation.

What was the quantity of trash which was ultimately cleared?By the end of the day we had collected almost 100 trash bags. The sort of trash cleared by our volunteers included a whole variety of objects, including cans, tissues, restaurant take-away bags and cups, bags with left-overs, charcoal, dead fish, blankets, shoes, socks, a lot of broken glass and…well, the list goes on and on.

Through these pages, would you like to give a special recognition to anyone in particular who was a source of help for you?Yes, of course it is important to give appropriate thanks and, whilst grateful to ALL the volunteers who showed up and supported this event on the

Yes, we are planning to do it on monthly basis. It will just help to create an awareness among people that will encourage them to keep their home clean. Because there is a lack of natural beauty in Kuwait, and because the only source of this is the coastline with its beaches, if we do not take better care of this we will be deprived of this beauty as well.

How we can create awareness?Facebook provides us with a good communication tool to spread the news, and we need to distribute informative and educational flyers, but these will require additional funding through donations or sponsorship. In addition, we should urge the Government to take the responsibility to spread this message. In my opinion, there are just three steps which should be taken immediately:1. There should be a campaign of awareness advertisements on both radio and television;2. Adequate resources should be provided from public funding to clean the environment;3. Government should introduce an enforceable anti-pollution law.

Finally, how can people approach your organization?

“Operation: Keep Kuwait Clean” can be reached through facebook, through our email address ([email protected]) or by telephone on 66655409.As a final note, on behalf of the organizing team I should like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the operation and hope that, together, we can continue to make a difference.

COOKING

Prep time : 5 minutes, Cook time : 15 minutes, Makes : 6 servings

Tofu – also known as Soya Bean Curd - has been called the perfect food. It is high in protein, low in saturated fats and a good source of calcium as well as vitamin E. It is also cholesterol free. Let’s find out more about ‘the cheese of Asia.’

Tofu is made by grinding cooked soya beans until a milk is produced. The milk is then solidified with a mineral coagulant calcium sulphate. The resulting tofu is naturally bland. It is, therefore an ideal additive to both sweet and savory dishes. There are two basic types of tofu. Silken tofu is soft and can be utilised as an ideal additive for dressings, sauces and in dairy free versions of ice cream or cheese cake. Firm tofu, on the other hand, comes in a more solid form. It can be stir-fried, grilled, scrambled, pickled, smoked, baked or barbecued.

Steamed tofu is particularly good for vegetarians. It will give the non-meat eater a plentiful supply of calcium ( which is derived from the calcium sulphate), as well as phosphorous and iron. Tofu is, therefore, an excellent substitute for meat in many vegetarian recipes.

Recent studies have also shown that Soya beans and products derived from them may play a role in preventing various types of cancer, particularly breast cancer. It has also been seen to have preventative capacity with regard to osteoporosis and symptoms related to menopause. An additional benefit of tofu is that it is extremely easy to digest. This is because the soya bean’s fiber is removed during the manufacturing process.

One drawback associated with tofu is that it absorbs cooking fat easily. It will, in fact, take in about 15 % of the fat used in the frying process. Soya is also known to be a common cause of food allergy.

When shopping for tofu, check that it is not sour. Do this by smelling for freshness. You should be able to find a freshness date stamped on the wrapping. When you have your tofu at home, rinse it and then keep it stored in the refrigerator in fresh cold water. Make sure you use the tofu within three or four days.

Tofu deserves to be a valuable addition to your diet. Ease into it slowly, however, monitoring if you are affected by any allergic reactions. Try to cook your tofu in non-fat products and you will enjoy all of the benefits of this high protein, low food Asian wonder food.

NOBODY BELIEVES A LIAROnce a mischievous boy lived in a village that stood in the feet of a hill. One day he thought of having fun at the cost of his fellow-villagers.

Standing on a high rock, he shouted at the top of his voice, ?Lion! Lion! Come, save me.?

The villagers heard the shout and ran to help him. But when they reached there, they could see no lion and the boy was perfectly all right. The boy laughed at the villagers saying, ?No Lion ; I did it only for fun.?

The villagers got highly annoyed and came back with an air of anger.

Few days later the boy repeated the whole act. Again the villagers went to his rescue but were duped again. Now they decided not to be fooled by him anymore.

Unfortunately, one day, the lion really came there. Now the boy shouted ? ?Lion! Lion! as loud as he could?. But nobody came to help him out.

The lion attacked the boy. The boy struggled hard to save himself but within few minutes, the beast killed him.

So, once a liar, always a liar.

The End...

Oprah Winfrey, who's famous for giving away cars to audience members, is now promoting driver safety by making cars a "No Phone Zone." The Governors Highway Safety Association, and its member state highway safety agencies, today announced it is joining forces with Winfrey and Harpo Studios to fight distracted driving during "No Phone Zone Day" on Friday, April 30, 2010.

Since January 2010, Winfrey has been promoting a ban on cell phone use while driving-- specially texting.

Currently the states that have banned texting while driving include: California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, Washington and Utah. Seventeen other states have partial bans on cell phone use.

A special live episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" devoted to dangers associated with cell phone use and special viewing rallies will be held in Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., bringing together victims' families, elected officials, advocacy organizations, parents, youth, and law enforcement to discuss best practices and steps to limit distracted driving in their own communities.

The "Oprah" show will debut a new sponsored public service announcement campaign. All participants and viewers will be asked to pledge to make their cars a "No Phone Zone." The pledge asks drivers to promise

to not use their phone, or text while driving, but to use handsfree calling options or pull over to make a call

when necessary.

Charlaine Harris' beloved telepathic waitress, Sookie Stackhouse, returns in Dead in the Family, the tenth installment in Harris' Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Series. The Southern Vampire Series follows vampires, weres and shifters that have "come out of the closet" and revealed their existence to the ordinary world.

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson is the third book in Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy, picking up after the ending of The Girl Who Played With Fire. Lisbeth Salander is recovering in a hospital and awaiting trial for three murders when she is released. Mikael Blomkvist must prove her innocence. Meanwhile, Lisbeth is plotting her own revenge against the people who put her in this situation. This is the final installment in Larsson's Millennium trilogy.

Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead is the fifth book in the young adult Vampire Academy Series. In Spirit Bound, Rose has returned from Siberia. She chose not to destroy Dimitri when she had the chance, and she still misses him. Now that he's tasted her blood, he has decided to hunt her, putting Rose's plans for life outside the Academy after graduation in jeopardy.

In Fever Dream by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, Special Agent Pendergast is going through his wife's possessions after her untimely death in a big game hunting accident when he discovers that the gun she was using was purposely loaded with blanks. Once he realizes someone wanted her dead, he begins to investigate her murder and find out secrets about who she really was.

Orringer received more than the typical notice for a debut short story collection when her 2003 How to Breathe Underwater was named a New York Times Notable Book, landed on various other lists, and picked up a small prize or two. It’s looking like that promising first effort may translate into a “big” novel for Orringer in 2010. Library Journal reported a 60,000-copy first printing for The Invisible

Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin is the story of two women whose lives are brought together by a tragic accident. HDTVs

LCDs can use one of two backlight technologies.CCFLs(cold cathode fluorescent lamps) are the most common, but LEDs ae the latest back-light technology to hit the LCD scene.(See the “LED” section for more info on LED TVs.)

ProsThe thin profiles and light weight of LCDs make them easy to

mount on a wall.

Power demands are a bit lower than comparably sized plasma displays and considerably lower than CRT televisions.

ConsFast moving images may suffer from a slight trailer effect, but with

improved LCD technology, the effect is barely perceptible.

When pixels stick on or off, they show up as either a pinpoint of bright light or black, which can be distracting on screen.

From certain viewing angles, LCDs will lose video contrast and color.

LCDs with CCFL back lighting suffer from leaking light, and unlike LEDs, they can’t dim certain areas on screen. This may result in blacks and whites that appear to be more gray in color.

Screen Technology Differences

Plasma

Pros:A plasma TV’s phosphors light up evenly

across the screen to create images, which are consistently bright and clear with vibrant colors.

The contrast ratio is high, so you’ll see some of the darkest blacks and brightest whites.

The design and technology of plasma TVs lend themselves to large screen sizes—typically 50 inches or greater.

Rapid pixel response means no blurry motion.

Wide viewing angles give you the same high-quality images on screen no matter where in the room you happen to sitting.

ConsSome plasmas are susceptible to image

burn-in if not cared for properly.Low air pressure and high altitudes may cause

plasma to buzz. Some plasma have highly reflective glass

which isn’t ideal in sunny settings.

Best ForLarge groups that watch TV TogetherMovies or sports with nonstop action

LED (light-emitting diode)LED TVs are actually a type of LCD TV. These sets use one of two LED backlight technologies:Full-array lighting places LEDs behind the screen

in a grid pattern, letting the TV dim certain LEDs for the best contrast ratios available.

Edge-lit sets have LEDs placed around the frame of the TV, and light is directed toward the center of the screen. Edge-lit models cost less than full-array sets and are a lot thinner.

ProsBy using LEDs, these sets use a lot less

electricity than other HDTVs, and they don’t contain harmful mercury.

Overall, LED TVs are one third thinner than other LCD TVs and have longer life spans.

Plasmas are well known for their deep blacks and crisp whites and fast response, but LED TVs closely match in performance.

ConsThese sets are costly because they feature

a relatively new technology.

Blooming, or a halo effect, may encircle bright images that are on dark back grounds.

Best ForEco-conscious viewers

Fast-paced gaming

PrTV (rear-Projection TV)

ProsPRTVs are surprisingly lightweight for their

size. You will find exceptional picture quality on

very big screens (65 inches and larger). As screens get bigger, RPTvs, tend to be

more cost-effective than an LCD, LED, or plasma TV.

ConsWith depths of 16 to 24 inches, these TVs

are far too big and bulky to mount on a wall.

PRTVs require lamp replacements every few years.

Best ForAnyone who wants to bring a cinematic

experience homeBig roomy home theaters

Kuwait, 13 April 2010: ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Kuwait Limited flew the winners of the “ExxonMobil BBS Science Trip Essay Competition” to London for a five-day trip to visit Imperial College, one of the UK’s most prestigious universities, and an exclusive tour of ExxonMobil’s refinery in the UK.

ExxonMobil launched the “ExxonMobil BBS Science Trip Essay Competition” in collaboration with Bayan Bilingual School (BBS) in January 2010. The competition required participants to write an essay on what they deem as the most significant scientific achievement of the last decade, and defending their case by arguing its impact on society.

The eight winners, Mohammed Rakan Al-Sabah, Nasser Bahzad, Nour Ghadanfar, Aseel Al-Salem, Dawood Almatar, Marwan Al Enezi, Jassim AlBahar and Soud Al-Rashed, BBS supervising teacher, Sadjia Droueche, and ExxonMobil’s Public Affairs and Government Relations Manager, Aseel Al-Turkait, flew to London on Tuesday 6th April and started the trip with a visit to ExxonMobil’s refinery in Southampton.

ExxonMobil’s Public Affairs and Government Relations Manager, Ms. Aseel Al-Turkait, said: “The trip is a great opportunity to stimulate students into learning more about science, whether it was through the research they have done to qualify into the competition or during the educational visit to Imperial College and our UK refinery. We look forward to organizing more of these educational trips in the future.”

During their visit to ExxonMobil’s UK refinery, expert engineers walked students through the history behind the refinery, the process of oil refining and the distribution process of oil throughout the world. During the third day, students visited with His Excellency, Ambassador Khaled Al-Duwaisan at the Embassy of Kuwait, after which they left for a visit with Imperial College, which included an in depth presentation on the college’s history, admission requirements and a tour of the grounds and buildings..

Bayan Bilingual School Chemistry Teacher on the trip, Mrs. Sadjia Droueche, said: “High school students are often hesitant about the careers they want to pursue, and this starts with wondering which college they want to enroll in. We thank ExxonMobil for organizing these annual trips and allowing brilliant students to have a feel of what awaits them after school.”

The trip ended with visits to educational and historical locations such as the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben.

Al-Turkait added: “Students expressed great interest in the activities lined-up during the five days. Educational trips are very important for students to see how they can apply what they learn theoretically at school through on-ground visits of specialized studies and professions. Our investment in educational trips today is crucial to the development of the leaders of tomorrow, especially in science fields.”

ExxonMobil Kuwait is an active supporter of engaging students in the fields of math, science, and analytical thinking. The company is a founder of the annual Kuwait Science Fair competition, Kuwait's largest math and science competition launched in 2008. ExxonMobil Kuwait also organizes yearly educational trips for students, and for the last three years, about 40 students have visited Qatar and eight others London, courtesy of the company.

DISCIPLINE IDEAS FOrYOUr 7 TO 10 YEAr OLD

THE FIVE GOLDEN rULESOF DISCIPLINE

1- Stand FirmWe all hate conflict, but if you don’t stick to the rules and consequences you set up, your kids aren’t likely to either.

2- Pick your battlesGive the small things small attention and the big things big attention, and you will be happier and calmer-and (bonus!) your children will be happier, calmer and better behaved too.

3- Praise, don’t punishTry to practice “good feeling" discipline most of the time. Simply put, your tone of voice, your behavior, the words you’re using, should all feel good to your child 80 percent of the time. If you can do that, you can do no wrong.

4- Set clear rules and expectationsA carefully selected bunch of age-appropriate rules can make family life a whole lot smoother and easier. For example, the "no cookies before dinner" rule prevents regular arguments about snacking before supper. The “no computer after 10 p.m.” rule stops a nightly dispute about shutting down the PC.

5- Provide unconditional loveYes, it has no –brainer, but children need to know you love them. Every day, even when they have done Something bad.

Solutions worth tryingTake a coach approach Coaches are questions beginning with what and how to help team members reach their goals, says Carson. If your son has a fight with a friend, ask him,”What could you do differently the next time?” Your goal is to help him learn from the mistakes he made this time so he can do better the next time.

Push the rewind button When possible; give your child a second chance. Explain what she’s done wrong and remind her of the behavior

Where they’re

“Big Kids” are now better able to express their feelings and to express their feelings and demonstrate self-control, so this is a prime time to lay the foundation for future behavior. Whatever happens between the ages of five and ten tends to have a major impact on what’s going to take place in teen years.

Typical Trouble Spots

General Compliance “At this age, discipline is all about trying to get your child to do what he’s supposed to do-------clean up, make it out the door on time, get his home work done, etc. It’s lot tougher with this age group since you can’t just pick them up and put them into bed or carry them out the door.

you’d like to see. And thank her when she gets it right, says Carson.

Use logical consequences otherwise known as cause and effect; these should be directly related to your child’s behavior. If your eight-year-old is late for school because she had trouble getting up in the morning, make bedtime earlier the next few nights rather than revoking her TV privileges. The best consequences are the ones whereby your child learns something.

HOROSCOPES &May Planet Overview: The Sun's warmth and three planets changing direction generate the energy to fuel your ambitions in May. On May 11 Mercury, the messenger, may be whispering a new strategy in your ear when it moves into direct motion and returns clarity to your projects. The New Moon on May 13 in stable Taurus presents a ripe time to plant the seeds of new intentions. A t-square among Saturn, Uranus, and Pluto on May 28 seals the deal. Saturn, the most ambitious of all planets, turns direct on May 30 and you're on the road to realizing what may have been no more than a thought or dream until now.

During the month of May, you'll find that your love life will heat up and become very exciting. You'll put a strong emphasis on love and affection, and you won't be afraid to be demonstrative. A sextile between Venus and Mars on May 7 will increase your passion and desire. Others will find you attractive but erratic. You'll also be interested in creative activities, such as

drama, music, and art. Mercury and the Sun together in Taurus at the beginning of the month will help you focus on financial matters and get organized. Seek advice, take a course, or read up on financial planning and investments.

(Mar 21 – Apr 19)

Arie

s

You'll have a good memory and be organized with the Sun and Mercury in your sign this month. This is a good time demonstrate your skills and prove that you're capable and reliable. You'll be happy and focused on doing good work. Mercury will be retrograde until May 11, bringing some difficulty with important papers, contracts, and various kinds

of information. Others will find your presence soothing and grounding. Pay attention to money matters and try to stick to a budget. You'll plan a lot of activities with your family over the coming weeks and put a lot of energy into your home.

(Apr 20 – May 20)

Taur

us

Love and friendship will be a source of pleasure this month with Venus in your sign. There will be many chances to socialize and connect, whether you're looking for a mate or wanting to catch up with friends. Mercury will be retrograde in Taurus until May 11, so you can expect a few communication glitches. After that, things should go smoothly and you'll

be well liked, attractive, and in tune with others. The Sun and Mercury in Taurus will help you focus on details and planning. A Full Moon in Sagittarius on May 27 will intensify your need for freedom and might cause partnership headaches.

(May 21 – June 20)

Gem

ini

You may hide your feelings this month and find it difficult to reach out to others. Even though Venus will be in the social sign of Gemini, you'll keep to yourself. With Mars in Leo and your financial sector, you may be overly generous with others and spend too much. This placement could make you think that you can win affection with gifts or gestures. The Sun and Mercury in Taurus

will increase concentration, memory, and focus. Mercury will be retrograde until May 11, and you'll find that paperwork, data, and messages go missing. Be clear when giving instructions and keep written records.

(June 21 – July 22)

Canc

er

Mars in your sign will stir up passion and intense creativity this month. You'll crave attention and put your heart and soul into all of your activities. Career matters will be stable, and this would be a good time to plan ahead and hone your skills. Beware of impulsive moves and the tendency to be stubborn about the need for change. Mercury retrograde in Taurus until May 11 will be frustrating and

bring headaches. Messages and important paperwork may be lost and instructions may be misconstrued. Put everything in writing and keep receipts, e-mails, and work orders.

(July 23 – Aug 22)

Leo

Saturn has moved back into your sign, causing tension and stress. New responsibilities will require strong organization and patience for a few months. A New Moon in the sign of Taurus on May 13 will help you slow down, be methodical, and pay attention to important details into June. The Sun and Mercury in Taurus will also bring a strong work ethic, a good memory, and the ability to concentrate. Venus in Gemini may be

distracting due to a busy social life, career functions to attend, and friends who need your advice. The Full Moon in Sagittarius on May 27 could make you restless

with others. The Sun and retrograde Mercury in your work sector will help you focus and concentrate. Mercury's backward motion until May 11 will create havoc with plans and details, however.

With Mercury and the Sun in Taurus for most of the month, you'll work steadily and be very focused, methodical, and careful. Mercury will be retrograde until May 11 and this motion will cause problems with communication of all kinds, and possibly the loss of important data and documents. You'll take your time if you're thinking of getting involved with someone, even

though Venus and Mars will bring a strong attraction around May 7. A New Moon in Taurus on May 13 will bring out your sensual side and help you feel relaxed, especially with someone you're interested in.

and misunderstandings with Mercury retrograde and the Taurus planets in square to your sign. The New Moon in Taurus on May 13 will help you slow down and be more patient. Mars in Leo could cause friction and drama with someone close.

Jupiter and Uranus in your sign are still causing disruption and unexpected events. You've been changeable and moody for some time now. Venus in Gemini will help you to focus on family members, but don't let others take advantage of you. Connections with some relatives, neighbors, and members of your community will be helpful, however. You'll receive some good

advice and support when you need it. A New Moon in Taurus on May 13 will enable you to be more practical and eager to help others. You'll understand the need for training and education. Mars in your work sector will bring a busy time.
