The Civic Club held Candidates Night on the evening of April 15th (it just so happened to be tax filing day) and a vigor- ous debate took place among the candidates. The meeting was conducted with a respectful adherence to the rules of common decency. The positions of the candidates were fully discussed and many questions were asked and well thought out answers were provided. The event took nearly two hours, and everyone left thinking that a fair and informa- tive forum was held. There were about 100 citizens in attendance ,including some of our young people who had a chance to see how democracy works at the local level. Hopefully, one day they can take this experience and put it to good use. Please make sure that you get fully informed, and then go out and exercise your right to vote. The big day is Saturday, May 8 th and early voting starts on April 26 th and ends on Tuesday, May 4th. You have no excuses not to take advantage of the opportunity. Lately I have been taking the occasion to watch the pelicans feed in the water that surrounds the island. They seem to be more active in our particular area in the spring. If you watch them carefully you will note that beyond just making a big splash when they hit the water, they employ a type of precision and accuracy that is quite astounding. They just glide along surveying the water, and then tend to rise up a little, turn their beaks down, set their feet in position, and then tip their entire bodies over for a dart like shot right into their next meal. BAM! It’s funny to watch the scavenging little gulls try to slip in beside the pelicans to see if they can snatch a leftover or poach the entire meal. You know some things down here are kind of neat. So take a moment and see the world unfold before you and Give Thanks. Be sure to go to our Website at www.clscivicclub.org to say up to date with all that is happening. Island Gardening TipsBy Julie Moncur

-It’s a booming year for roses! Prune climbingroses as they finish blooming, if you want to shape them or train thembetter to whatever they are climbing on.-Fertilize bearing stone fruit trees with 2 to 6 cups 21-0-0 fertilizer pertree.-Move houseplants outdoors in the shade on the porch, under a treeand out of the wind for new growth.-To avoid stressing your lawn grass, do not cut off more than one-thirdof the height of the grass-Around Mother’s Day is a good time to fertilize your lawn with a niceorganic fertilizer. Don’t be tempted to use the “weed and feed” prod-ucts. They generally contain atrazine that will be damaging to our sur-rounding water. For weed control, look for “pre” or “post” emergentherbicide products and apply per product instructions.-Feed azaleas for the second time 4 to 6 weeks after you first fed themthis year with azalea fertilizer. and after they finish blooming.-Continue foliar sprays of zinc, sulfate on young pecan trees. Protectother fruit and nut trees from over spray.-Around the 7th, plant caladiums, begonias, coleus and impatiens. Keepcaladium and coleus flowers pinched off for fuller plants.

-Control webworms in trees with Malathion or one of the organic-typeinsecticides such as Bio-Worm Killer or Dipel.-Plant cleome, lobelia, monkey flower, four-o’clock and nicotiania indamp areas.-Watch for blossom end rot on developing tomatoes and remove in-fected fruit. Keep the plants mulched and maintain even soil moisture.-Fertilize blooming annual plants with 15-5-10 at the rate of 2 lbs per100 square feet of bed. Watering with Miracle Grow in a hose-endsprayer every couple of weeks works great too.-In shady areas plant begonia, wood violet, impatiens, torenia andmonkey flower.

-Mid month plant these heat-tolerant annuals: lantana celosia, cosmos, purslane, and copper plant.-Water plants on an “as-needed” basis in early morning if possible. Besure to water lawns, shrubs and trees deeply. Shallow watering causesthe root system to be shorter and more easy to stress out when the sum-mer heat comes.-Try plantings of celosia and amaranthus in sun and coleus in shade forvibrant summer color.-Plant summer herbs mid month: basil, coriander, dill, fennel, borage, summer savory.-Coral vine is great for a sun-balked fence that’s hard to water.

-Continue the FIRE ANT WARS- do not apply when temperatures aretoo hot or too cool or when soil and grass are wet. Follow up withcontrol 3 to 4 weeks later. A good organic fire ant treatment can bemade with 1 ounce Orange Oil, 1 ounce agricultural molasses, and 1ounce liquid dishwasher detergent to a gallon of water. It won’t killthem, but will make them go away!

-Watch for powdery mildew on crepe myrtle, zinnia, eunomymus, etc.Funginex and Daconil 2787 can be used on these ornamentals.-Replace or replenish mulch materials in flower beds and shrub bor-ders to conserve moisture and reduce weed growth.-Save those lawn clippings for a compost pile. Don’t have one? Thinkof starting one as a fun spring project and a better place for thosekitchen scraps.

Passing the GavelBy Pam House

April Fool’s Day marked the last meetingof the Civic Club where Allen Cruthirdswould preside as President – no one sug-gested that the day had any particular signifi-cance. After three years at the helm, he haddecided that it was time to let someone elseenjoy the perks and burdens of leadership.

There was a large crowd to bid him farewell and to welcome the newleadership (that there was some great food might have had somethingto do with it also). Since Jan Finnerty was missing due to illness,Alice Westmoreland presented the minutes and the treasurer’s report(the income reported slightly enhanced as a reminder to us all that itwas April 1).

The Islander news is that Susan Perez is retiring as editor aftermany years of service. Pam House has agreed to become the neweditor beginning with the June issue, but will be depending on theadvice and assistance of Susan and the members of the Islander staff.

The Scholarship Committee’s Soup Cook-Off was a huge success.Cindy Walbe and Betty Jamarik reported lots of soup and lots ofmoney. They also announced an October Spaghetti Dinner will beheld as a scholarship committee fundraiser, “since the Island loves toeat!”

The 1 ‘til Done First Annual Fish Fry was a success, in spite of rain, wind and a bit of confusion in the announcements of the time andplace. On our little island hiding a party is pretty difficult.

Upcoming events (as of the time of the meeting) included the EasterSunrise Service coordinated by Neeltje Burns, the Easter Egg Huntguided by Ryan Ward, and the start of the Jammin’ on Jarboe concertseries with Dennis Roberson at the helm.

Everyone’s beginning their spring cleaning in time for the IslandWide Garage Sale on May 8th. Diana and Bryan Hoerner are gath-ering the names of the participants, arranging for the ads, maps, etc.and looking for some help.

Getting ready for the April 15 Candidate’s Night took some of themeeting time. Allen had Helle Brown draw the seven city councilcandidate’s names from a bowl to determine in what order they wouldspeak. There was discussion and a vote on whether to include repre-sentatives to present pro and con on the town center initiatives on theballot – it was decided NOT to include them.

The evening came to a close as the nomination and election of thatdangerous duo Dennis and JoLynn Roberson as new club officers.Dennis will take over the helm as President, JoLynn as Vice-President.Jan Finnerty will remain as Secretary and Alice Westmoreland asTreasurer.

Rebuilding UpdateBy Arline Laughter

At last Spring is here after a long, cold, dreary winter. It is 18 months after Ike hit usand time to take inventory of some of the devastation. The firstweek of April, Helle Brown and I counted all of the houses thathave been demolished and the ones that have been rebuilt. Therehave been 49 houses demolished. Of these 18 have now beenrebuilt. Congratulations to those who have come back.

We didn’t think to count the houses being raised as we did oursurvey. Oops!

With the budding out of the trees, the Island no longer looksquite as naked. We really lost a lot of our trees and we need toreplant lots of new ones to return to our pre-Ike tree cover.

The Joy of GivingBy Pam House

As part of the celebration of Veteran’s Day last year, the Civic Club en-dorsed a project, coordinated by Bonnie Tipton, to provide care packages to aforward operations Army base in Southern Kandahar Province where herbrother, Joe Tipton, is stationed. As a result of the generosity of many islandersand others in the area, 72 care packages that included items like bar soap, laun-dry detergent, tooth paste, deodorant, and food treats were assembled andshipped just a week before Christmas.

All of the packages arrived on or before Christmas in only six days! It defi-nitely brightened up the day for many, and Bonnie has received many messagesand emails from grateful recipients. Below is one of the most recent letters.More photos can be found on the Civic Club web site photo page.

Submitted by Bonnie Tipton

My name is Staff Sergeant Fatima Mascarina. I am currently serving withJoseph Tipton in Maywand District, Kandahar Province , Afghanistan. I workfor 2-1 Infantry Battalion as a security officer for Zhari District, which is east ofMaywand District. Joseph Tipton was kind enough to send us at least 15 of thecare packages you had sent to him. I have had the privilege to meet Joseph andwork with him since January in bringing the care packages to their intendedrecipients. Josephs is tireless in regards to his dedication to reaching the soldiersin most need of the care packages. He will surely be missed once his tour inMaywand District is finished.

The care packages have boosted the soldiers' morale, without a doubt. Wedon't have very much in terms of conveniences, and for those soldiers that haveto go on missions for one week up to one month at a time out in the boondocks, they have to live on care package supplies and have to find innovative ways tomake their supplies last. One thing about soldiers: they are very resourceful.

If it has ever crossed anyone's mind whether the care packages were ?enough?or contained what soldiers needed most, I assure you we in 2-1 IN BN feel quitepampered! 2-1 IN BN appreciates all the trouble that you went through to sus-tain us and remind us we are valued.

It is difficult to obtain the pictures of soldiers receiving the packages, as Isend up the packages ahead of me and cannot find any packages that resembletheir former, sealed form once I arrive at the operating base. In retrospect, Isuppose I could have taken pictures of the ant trail of cookies and M&Ms left inthe wake of our sugar-deprived boys.

After a period of time, I take all the contents of the care packages and givethem to the Afghan villagers.

I wanted to send you the pictures I've been taking as I went around the vil-lages and distributed the contents of the care packages you have sent. I'mspeechless, and practically humbled by your dedication to the cause. The post-age itself must have been in the thousands! As the messenger, carrying the carepackage items to the kids and passing along the Afghan children's smiles backto the thoughtful souls in Texas , I'm completely floored by it all.

How can I thank you all but to continue taking pictures as I deliver the carepackages to their intended recipients? I had taken five more boxes from Josephone week ago, and now have Peeps-filled soldiers who enjoy a little ?marshmallow goodness? in the Easter season. I also have enough candy for themonth to give to the darling Afghan children. I hope the enclosed pictures dojustice to the gratitude we-- soldiers and Afghan villagers-- want to express toour heroes in Clear Lake Shores , Texas , Sam Rayburn High and Lomax Ele-mentary, and Deer Park Girl Scout Troop #8561.

GOD BLESS TEXAS .Sincerely,Fatima MascarinaSSG, Military IntelligenceUSA

The Health Benefitsof YogaBy Beth Atherton

Yoga has been practiced for more than 5,000years, and currently, close to 11 millionAmericans are enjoying its health benefits.Yoga can hardly be called a trend.

The yoga classes at our clubhouse areVinyasa or power yoga.

Yoga benefits: Flexibility

When some people think of yoga, they imagine having to stretch like agymnast. That makes them worry that they're too old, unfit, or "tight"to do yoga. The truth is you're never too old to improve flexibility.

The series of yoga poses called asanas work by safely stretching yourmuscles. This releases the lactic acid that builds up with muscle useand causes stiffness, tension, pain, and fatigue. In addition, yoga in-creases the range of motion in joints. It may also increase lubricationin the joints. The outcome is a sense of ease and fluidity throughoutyour body.

Yoga stretches not only your muscles but all of the soft tissues of yourbody. That includes ligaments, tendons, and the fascia sheath that sur-rounds your muscles. And no matter your level of yoga, you mostlikely will see benefits in a very short period of time. In one study, participants had up to 35% improvement in flexibility after only eightweeks of yoga. Yoga benefits: Strength

Power yoga and other more vigorous styles will help you improvemuscle tone. Many of the poses, such as Downward Dog, UpwardDog, and Plank pose, build upper-body strength. This becomes crucialas people age. The standing poses, especially if you hold them forseveral long breaths, build strength in your hamstrings, quadriceps, andabdominal muscles. Poses that strengthen the lower back include Up-ward Dog and Chair pose. When practiced correctly, nearly all posesbuild core strength in the deep abdominal muscles.

Yoga benefits: Heart benefits

Perhaps one of the most studied areas of the health benefits of yoga isits effect on heart disease. Yoga has long been known to lower bloodpressure and slow the heart rate. A slower heart rate can benefit peoplewith hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. Yoga was a key compo-nent to the heart disease program designed by Dean Ornish, MD. Thiswas the first program to partly reverse heart disease through lifestyleand diet rather than surgery. On a biochemical level, studies point to apossible anti-oxidant effect of yoga. And yoga has been associatedwith decreased cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well as a boost inimmune system function.

Other documented benefits include - improved balance, posture, breathing, sleep, mood and concentration.

The only way to be certain of all that yoga can do for you is to try it foryourself and see. We meet Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and Thursdays at6:30 (except the 1st week of the month). See page 3 for May schedule.

Some of you mayknow me as the swim teacher, as I have taught hundreds of children (and infants) swim lessons over the years.I cannot stress how important swim lessons are for your child. I sincerely enjoy teaching your children and will

be offering summer classes once again.I just wanted to remind everyone to be sure to get their child signed up for beginner or refresher lessons, be it through me or any other local

program. My student-teacher ratio is 2 to 1 which offers your child a great learning environment. Your child will be paired up with a childsimilar in age and experience level so that maximum success is achieved.

Island CookingBy Susan Perez

We have so many great cooks on the Island and Iam always willing to submit their favorite recipes. Itmakes for diversity here on the Island and we al-ready know that we have that.

I requested this recipe from Pege Wright because I know how every-one loves it when she prepares this. Pege, being the accommodatingperson she is, was receptive to her sharing her recipe.

Pege’s Ramen Noodle Salad

1 med head cabbage(I use angel shredded)Seasonings from Ramen Noodle Pkg.4 green onions chopped2 Pkg. chicken flavored ramen noodles,

uncooked and crumbled1 cup light oil4 Tbs. sugar or (splenda)4 Tbs toasted Sesame seeds (optional)

6 Tbs. Rice vinegar4 Tbs toasted sliced almonds2 tsp. salt4 cups cooked diced chicken (optional)1 tsp. pepper

When I make this I double the amount of dressing and keep it onhand, that way it is quick and easy...I also don't use nearly theamount of dressing per serving...and I always wait until I am readyto serve it to mix the ingredients and add the dressing...

Yard of the MonthBy: Judy Young and Angela Cloyd

The yard of Butch and Angie Cloyd, of 838 Grove has been se-lected as April Yard of the Month. If you want to take a peek, you’llfind it about the middle of the block on the North side of Grove - theone with a landscaped bed in the center of the driveway. Those drive-way beds fascinate me. I guess because they give an aesthetic focalpoint to soften an otherwise boring blank expanse of cement. TheCloyd’s driveway bed has a large ship anchor directly in front with alion standing guard in front of the anchor. Planted with a real diversityof plants, they all complement each other. A tall palm is the centerpoint flanked by sego palms both in front and back of it. Those aresurrounded by petunias, marigolds, zinnias, elephant ears and surpris-ingly tomato plants. At the back end facing their house is a really neattiled bird bath by which hang two baskets filled with mini pansies. Onthe right side of the drive, kinda sorta camouflaging the fire hydrant bythe street, stands another palm over a bed of roses, snapdragons andalyssum. As you move back towards the house on that right side yousee aloe, another palm hovering over a bed of cannas, another segopalm and pots of plumerias waiting to get their summer leaves. Thenstroll to the left side of the drive where a hibiscus and rubber tree arejust starting to flourish. By the house is another palm, possibly dam-aged by this years freeze but determined to bud out and survive withsnapdragons planted beneath it to support and cheer it on.

I visited with Butch and Angela by phone. After agreeing weshare a common sigh of relief every time we cross the bridge intoClear Lake Shores, I asked them to email some personal thoughtsabout the yard. Normally I pick and choose what to write but Angelawrote it so well I want to include it in her words, altered ever soslightly for length. Following is what she said.

We are just your average glad to be home residents and proud tobe selected Yard of the month recipients. This is our 15th year of livingon the island and we have raised two children during this time. One ofthe things that most attracted us was the wonderful trees especially onGrove. Unfortunately the Grove trees were some of the most Ike dam-aged. We lost our three largest oaks during the storm and another fivea year later due to saltwater and drought. Although our home and streetwas vastly altered by Ike’s devastation, it seems all the flowers havebeen rejuvenated and are blooming as never before. The rose bushesnear the fire hydrant amaze us every morning with their beauty andfragrance. People often stop in front of our house and inquire as towhat fertilizer was used and type of roses. We frequently think aboutwhere we will retire, but after golf carting around the island each eve-ning and talking to our neighbors who have so much pride in theiryards and homes, we can’t imagine a better paradise anywhere otherthan the Island of Clear Lake Shores and the State of Texas.

Jackie E. Fuller - City CouncilBorn in Houston, raised in both Bellaire where I still own property

and also property in West University. After sailing with friends fromClear Lake Shores in the early eighties, I moved to the Clear Lakearea in 1988. I then purchased property here in 1991 and a housein 1993. I had shopped in Taylor Lake and decided there weremore pretensions there than I could put up with. Clear Lake Shoreswas for me.

When I bought my property, on the same street, that later becamethe Opus parking lot, the house had completely collapsed and had-n’t been demolished. I inherited a shrimper when I bought myhouse and actually enjoyed the rumble of the diesel at 4am, as hemotored sown the canal. I loved the texture and grittiness of thearea, an entirely different feel than the uniformity and canned sub-division of Bellaire with it’s razor sharp setbacks you could snap aline from the corner to corner and house to house.

Owner of several business's including a collision repair business,a metal salvage business, then a trucking company. I later workedas a technical representative for a Dutch chemical company formany years. Now semi-retired I drive diesel trucks on casual basisfor the petro company industry. I enjoy traveling, including hitchhik-ing 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden and Finland andtraveling as far as Istanbul Turkey. I’ve been to Europe severaltimes and spent Christmas of 2003 in London, and New Years eveand Jan 04 in Scotland. I’ve sailed boats to Key West from here andhave ridden cycles to both coasts.

As a conservative, I try to pay off debt as soon as possible and trynot to borrow.

Brian Hanby - City Council

I want to relate that I believe:

In open and accountable representation.

In honoring commitments and advocating for our residents, while remaining fiscally responsible.

In finding opportunities for the local communities to work to-gether to the benefit of all (our neighbor communities arelikely, just as interested as we are in keeping the area clean, green and financially strong.

That efficiencies and greater community aware-ness/involvement could be cultivated, freely, through the useof existing computing and internet technologies.

I’m 37 years old, and a second generation lone star– my grandpar-ents moved in from other places. I grew up in the small towns alongthe south bank of Clear lake. I did well in school, looked for extraresponsibilities (in council, court and Senate). I hired on with theBoeing Company in ‘94— I’m their web (everything). I wasn’t exactlysure how my Biology degree was going to help me in that role—though I know now that it did.

As an adult, I’ve learned that more experiences of greater varietyhelp people make better decisions. And I dig on new experiences. Iwas recently recommended to the Boeing Leadership Program, Ihave deferred entry until August. I volunteer with Habitat for Hu-manity and other causes I believe in. I tell short stories that comeout way too long….am inclined to laugh at dumb jokes, physicalcomedy and awkward moments. I like rocking chairs, shelling pea-nuts, skipping rocks, quitter, westerns, belt buckles, Mac OS X.remembering old friends. I’m a pretty good listener. I try to do theright thing. I chooses to focus on the best in people. I am BrianHanby.

City Council Candidates

Allan Batchelor - City Council

Good morning friends and neighbors. My name is AllanBatchelor and I am running for City Council. Many of you knowmore of me than you probably want to but for those less fortu-nate I respectfully submit this short “Bio”.

Many of you know me from the Civic Club, either as Treasureror President and years of just hanging around. Maybe from theRoads and Drainage Committee, Planning an Zoning, an alter-nate on the Zoning Boards of Adjustments or as the chairmanof the Pool Committee. You got it. I’m a volunteer. I believe thatis what makes us what we are. It make Clear Lake Shores won-derfully unique. I believe if you seek an elected office with anagenda and not for the greater good, you a are politician. I'mnot a big fan of politicians. I have always been a glass half fullperson. That is the attitude I will gladly bring to City Council, if itis meant to be. I enjoy stepping in to jobs that need doing. Ibelieve change, among other things, happen. We can managechange or play catch up. I’m not keen on playing catch up, butit’s our call.

Melinda, Wyatt and I moved to the Island in 2001 but havebeen hanging around since the 80’s. I can’t imagine a betterplace to raise a family and I want to keep it that way. We areblessed in so many ways but Ike taught us not to take theseblessings for granted. It takes work and I’m up for it. A neighborasked where he could get one of my elections signs. I sug-gested he make one. There won’t be any vote for Allan signs. We have enough signs around the city already and the landfillsdon’t need any more plastic. But when the rest of you are done, consider donating your wire holders to the Civic Club. Please, May 8th, get out and VOTE! It is your right, your privi-

lege, your duty. See you around the Island.

Linda Merryman - Water Board

Why I am running for WCID #12

When I learned that we had no candidates from Clear lakeShores or Lazy Bend, I decided to run again for the WCID #12Water Board. All of the current board and candidates are fromKemah - leaving our community without representation. I feel itis very important that all of the citizens have a voice, and I lookforward to the opportunity to work together with our neighbors.

I previously served on the Board from 2004 to 2008, as Sec-retary. In addition, I represented WCID #12 on the Gulf CoastAuthority Board. I feel this experience well qualifies me to serveagain.

I have been employed with Continental Airlines since 1980.During this time, I have had the opportunity to obtain a broadrange of experience, which will serve me well as a member ofthe WCID Board. My experience includes: Customer Rela-tions/Customer Service; Legal Department; Human Resourcesand President Club.

My service to the community includes: Served on the AdvisoryBoard of Goodwill Industries of Houston; participated in Lake-wood Yacht Clubs Keels and Wheels Concours d’Elegancebenefitting Boys and Girls Harbor in La Porte, Tx; served onCommittee benefitting Bay Area Turning Point.

Ransom Paid, Hostage Released!Mike and Superman are reunited again.

One night eight months ago Superman was abductedfrom Mike Pons’ golf cart. Assuming it was just a hoax,Mike put out reward posters. Alas, after giving hisfriends (and enemies) a few weeks to ‘fess up he finallyaccepted the permanent loss of his golf-cart companion.

Then one day a week ago he got a fateful message. After much searching, Ann Reyna had finally located aclone on e-bay. Mike was happy! But not so fast saysAnn, there is a ransom to be paid and handed him thedemand letter with time & place for the exchange.

The appointed hour came. Mike was late, very late.He had to stop at home to change his underwear after avery scary glider lesson. Just when the kryptonitearound SM’s neck was about to terminate him, inwalked Mike carrying a briefcase. He snapped it openand 99 pennies (marked purple) were handed to Dennis, the go-between. The tape and ropes were removed andSM got his power back. This emotional scene mademany onlookers cry in their beer.
