By the time you receive this issue of the Windjammer there is a very strong possibility that you will have received your 2008 member card key. It will look much the same as it has in the past years but it will not be the same. In addition to gaining entrance to the club, it will now act as a debit card against the $100 you paid with your dues, to be used at the club. Additional funds can always be added to the card. It is important that you safeguard the card just as you would a credit card and that you have it with you to pay for your activities at the club. Paper chits will no longer be issued or accepted. Shortly there will be a letter going out to the membership with all of the details of the new card system outlined. To support the new card system CPYC now has a state of the art computer system which features point of purchase sales, much as you see in restaurants. The system will streamline our accounting system throughout the club and will facilitate use of credit cards. Of course, cash will still be accepted. While there may be a short learning curve as the new system is initiated, it is a sim- ple system that will increasingly become important with the advent of Pilot House food and increased use of the club. E-Mail Initiative

As a follow-up to the dialog and initiatives by mem-bers on the rising costs associated with the printing and mailing of Club announcements, the following program will be implemented. This program will cre-ate a new member e-mail database that will be private, strictly regulated and used solely for the dissemination of Cottage Park Yacht Club information. This will eliminate any spam currently sent to members. A “Bulletin Board” format on the CPYC web site will soon be created and password protected for members only. Here they can discuss issues of importance and interest. This will require a “log in” to access the site and to participate in the discussions.

Every member is being given the option of receiving announcements either electronically or via USPS mail. Any and all announcements will be on the CPYC web page and posted at the Club.

Please fill out the form below and return it to CPYC (attn: Commodore) as soon as possible. You may also reply via e-mail to: [email protected]. The im-plementation date of this initiative will be June 1, 2008 and will be reviewed periodically to ensure communi-cation is maintained for its members.

Your cooperation with this initiative is greatly appreci-ated!

Respectfully, Board of Directors

Installing the ceiling tiles has been a gym-nastic event working overheard on ladders, and around sprinkler pipes. Soon there will be a new rug and the equipment will be repositioned. Speaking of equipment, a local Crystal Cove resident Kate Brill-Daley, the Man-ager of the Clubs at Charles River Park (near Mass General Hospital) donated a significant amount of gym equipment to CPYC. Our many thanks to Kate and hope she will visit CPYC to see the fin-ished facility. The equipment includes a complete set of hand weights/dumbbells (2 each) ranging from 5 pounds up to 60 pounds, and weight plates ranging from 5 pounds up to 45 pounds for the bench-press equipment. All are in good condition and will be a nice addition to the CPYC work-out room.

Taking a break from the YS Dance? ▼ Member Volunteers Refurbish Exercise Room-Plus More Weekends over the past month, the House Committee has gathered volun-teer members together to refurbish the 2nd floor weight room. They began by ripping out the old walls, ceiling, and carpet, checking wiring, and removing poor equipment. Remember the dingy staircase to the 2nd floor? Now is has been refreshed and is bright. ▼ The hall way to the Members Meeting Room has been painted. ◄ ►

▼ The walls are plastered and the strap-ping is in place for the ceiling.

▼ The windows and door are trimmed and the area is painted.

The ‘07-’08 frostbite season at CPYC ended April 12th for Interclubs and Lasers. The Rhodes 19’s season ended in December due to the sagacity and/ or age limitations of its sailors. As always, the ICs, Lasers and Rhodes 19 sailors were treated to excel-lent Race Committee work headed up by Hatch Brown and assisted by regulars Betsy and Tally Gahan, John Pratt, and De-nise Economides. We are all looking forward to next year's racing which will begin in November. As always, we welcome new fleet members and RC volunteers. The Interclub fleet wrapped up the season at the IC Nationals, April 19-20, hosted by Metedeconck River Boat Club in Brick, NJ. Temperatures were quite balmy on Sat. Winthrop Frostbite had the best representation at the event, with 11 boats: CPYC mem-bers included John MacRae, Bob Coyle, Linda Epstein, and Venkat Chalasani, and prospective members Julia Marsh and Andrew Davis. Our fleet was also well represented in the top 10: 3rd - Jim Bowers/Sarah Hitchcock, 6th - Dave Nelson/Julia Marsh, 7th Will Welles/Katie Welles, 8th - John MacRae/Linda Epstein, 9th - Paul Adam/Gaelen Adam, 10th - Andrew Crocker/Julie Crocker.

becoming the 2008 Indoor Triathlon Win-ner. The winner of the tournament had his choice of top prizes. A $100.00 cash or a dozen lobsters graciously donated by Pat and Paul Leary (6) and Larry Bradley (6). Kevin chose the cash leaving the lob-sters to second place winners Stephen Carr and Charlie Whittaker. Third Place went to Matt Honan who won $50.00 Cash. While the games were fun, there were other activities to keep attendees busy. There was a 50/50 raffle, cash prizes, and numerous raffle gifts—some big, some

small, some fun. Then there was the food, tons of it! No one went home hungry.

Events like this would not be possible with out the many volunteers who donated their

time and efforts to make this work. Thank espe-cially to Judy Gaffney whose tireless enthusiasm really brings people to-gether. Thank you too to everyone else that that helped to make this a suc-cessful event. Dave Winkler

It's official. The Second Annual CPYC Indoor Triathlon is in the history books. Sunday, April 6, 2008, featured a full slate of competitors vying for the right to be called a "Triathlon Champion". Once all the would be champs were present, teams of two were drawn at random. Initially there were 8 people each play-ing at either Darts, Bowling or Pool meaning 24 of the 31 competitors started right away. With in a short time everyone else started play. A simple double elimination playoff style bracket is used for scoring. (Think of

March madness down to the final four). Double elimination means you need to lose twice before being eliminated from the tournament. Last years co-winners

Stephen Carr and Charlie Whittaker were undefeated at 5-0 going into the final four. Coming out of the loss side, Kevin Cummings, playing solo be-cause last minute no shows, fought his way to the final bracket with a re-cord of 5-1. Facing Stephen and Char-lie on the bowling

considering he was alone. Lou and Luigi could not be seen. From there the last leg was 1 and 1/2 miles to the finish at the old station. Lou and Luigi did very well completing their first race in 47 minutes. We finished

8 minutes behind them, seventeen minutes better than last year. Josh Aranov finished at 60 minute, knock-ing more than 35 minutes off last years time. Bill and Matt were no where to be seen. Although we did not bring home any

silver, CPYC was well represented and looking forward to rowing next year. Richard Honan

Aranov in his 12’ Whitehall, and Lou and Luigi Gaurino in their newly built Chester Yawl. By noon time the weather abated and at the start of the race, conditions were perfect

with flat sea and light breezes. Starting off the old Hull Life Saving Museum, the first leg of the race was almost 1 1/2 miles to Sheep Island. From there the breeze stiffened on the next leg to a marker off Peddocks Island. At this point Steve and I were

considerably ahead of Matt and Billy with their foolish hats. Josh was several hun-dred yards behind making good head way

This year’s Snow Row was held March 1st, almost two weeks earlier than last year’s race. The early morning weather for the trip to Hull in Larry Bradley’s “Sandy B” was

marginal at best. Although we only received about an inch of the forecasted snow, wet snow and rain continued to fall as we loaded our boats and gear. Temps were in the mid 30’s with a raw south easterly wind. Winthrop was represented by 4 boats: Richard and Steve Honan in their 15 ft Wherry “William & Anthony”; Billy and Matt Honan in a 12’ Whitehall; Josh

New members are always welcome! For more information on upcoming events, please contact Pamela Aranov at [email protected]

April 25th Book Swap

The book Swap held Sunday afternoon April 25th proved to be a tremendous suc-cess. Organized by Betsy Gahan, a lot of books arrived so several tables were filled to overflowing with fiction, non fiction, and children’s books. Shoppers left the club with arms filled with finds and great bargains since all books were free.
