Please join us in prayer this week for :

Pentecost Sunday Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church May 20, 2018

From the Pastor: When our Pope Emeritus visited New York in 2008, he said at St. Patrick’s

Cathedral:

“the light of faith can be dimmed by rou!ne, and the splendor of the Church

obscured by the sins and weaknesses of her members. It can be dimmed

too, by the obstacles encountered in a society which some!mes seems to

have forgo"en God and to resent even the most elementary demands of

Chris!an morality.”

It is “temp!ng,” he said, “at !mes to give way to frustra!on, disappoint-

ment and even pessimism about the future. In a word, it is not always easy

to see the light of the Spirit all about us, the splendor of the Risen Lord illu-

mina!ng our lives and ins!lling renewed hope in his victory over the world.

He con!nued:

“Yet the word of God reminds us that, in faith, we see the heavens opened,

and the grace of the Holy Spirit ligh!ng up the Church and bringing sure

hope to our world. “O Lord, my God,” the Psalmist sings, “when you send

forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the

earth.” These words evoke the first crea!on, when the Spirit of God hovered

over the deep. And they look forward to the new crea!on, at Pentecost,

when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and established the

Church as the first fruits of a redeemed humanity. These words summon us

to ever deeper faith in God’s infinite power to transform every human situa-

!on, to create life from death, and to light up even the darkest night. And

they make us think of another magnificent phrase of Saint Irenaeus: “where

the Church is, there is the Spirit of God; where the Spirit of God is, there is

the Church and all grace.”

Pray today that the Holy Spirit may overtake our lives and the Church. The

Holy Spirit is not just a gi" for a Confirma!on day. It is a gi" for all of us. It’s

a gi" the world needs us to take seriously.

Happy Pentecost, my friends! We need it! With love and Prayers,

Meditation from St. Philip Neri

Do not grieve over the tempta"ons you suffer. When the Lord intends to bestow a par"cular vir-tue on us, He o%en permits us first to be tempted by the opposite vice. Therefore, look upon every tempta"on as an invita"on to grow in a par"cular virtue and a promise by God that you will be suc-cessful, if only you stand fast.”

New Feast of Mary, Mother of the Church

“The Va!can has announced Pope Francis’ decision that the Church celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role

as “Mother of the Church” every year on the Monday a!er Pentecost, as a way to foster Marian piety and the ma-

ternal sense of the Church. The decree establishing the memorial was published March 3 in a le"er from Cardinal

Robert Sarah, head of the Congrega!on for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

As Sarah explained, Pope Francis added the memorial to the Roman Calendar a#er carefully considering how the

promo!on of devo!on to the Blessed Virgin Mary under this par!cular !tle might encourage growth in “the mater-

nal sense of the Church” and in “genuine Marian piety.”

“This celebra!on will help us to remember that growth in the Chris!an life must be anchored to the Mystery of the

Cross, to the obla!on of Christ in the Eucharis!c Banquet and to the Mother of the Redeemer and Mother of the

Redeemed,” Sarah wrote.

The cardinal noted that the “joyous venera!on given to the Mother of God by the contemporary Church, in light of

reflec!on on the mystery of Christ and on his nature, cannot ignore the figure of a woman, the Virgin Mary, who is

both the Mother of Christ and Mother of the Church.”

The memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, has been added to the General Roman Calendar,

the Roman Missal, and the Liturgy of the Hours. The La!n text has been published, and the transla!ons will be pre-

pared by the bishops’ conferences and approved by the congrega!on.

A celebra!on of a memorial generally means that prayers and readings specific to the day’s memorial are used in

the Mass.

The Marian !tle of “Mother of the Church,” was given to the Blessed Mother by Bl. Pope Paul VI at the Second Va!-

can Council. It was also added to the Roman Missal a#er the Holy Year of Reconcilia!on in 1975.

Subsequently, some countries, dioceses and religious families were granted permission by the Holy See to add this

celebra!on to their par!cular calendars. With its addi!on to the General Roman Calendar, it will now be celebrated

by the whole Roman Catholic Church.

In 2018, the memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, will be celebrated on May 21.

Guidelines for Reserving Masses

We are happy to share that the guidelines for reserving Masses, now in place, have made it possible for many more members of our parish family to remember their loved ones on days and dates that are mean-ingful for them. Your understanding and support is sincerely appreciat-ed. In the Chris!an spirit of loving and helping each other, please note the following:

1. With the agreement of both persons who are reques!ng a Mass, the Mass can be offered for TWO inten!ons. When you come to the rectory to request a Mass you will be asked if you would agree to sharing that Mass with someone else for whom that day is significant. If you do, a note will be made in the Mass book. The Mass is a most powerful pray-er and God will bless your kindness, understanding and generosity of spirit.

2. To make it possible for as many members of our parish family as possible to remember their loved ones on days and dates that are meaningful for them, during the first week the Mass book is open: a) An individual or household may reserve up to three weekend Masses.

b) For weekday Masses, including Saturday at 9 AM, an individual or household may reserve up to four Masses for the same individual on the same day of the week at the same me. ( Ex. Up to 4 Masses on Thursdays at 8 am for Joe Smith)

3. You may call the rectory (359-1230) during business hours to re-serve a Mass and then follow up with your dona!on. Please remember, however, that when the Mass book first opens there may be significant wait !me as the secretary a*ends to those in the office. Thank you for your understanding!

Clerical Subs tutes for the Parish Office

The children become actively involved in the Mass and make new friends. Outreach performances also create possibilities to meet community ser-vice requirements.
