Dear Speaker Boehner, Majority Leader McConnell, Minority Leaders Reid and Pelosi,

As the 114th

Congress works to ensure that health care providers can continue to provide high

quality, affordable health care in our communities, we are writing as the leaders of 524 hospitals

and health systems to express our full support for a program that helps needy Americans every

day.

For more than 20 years, the 340B drug discount program has played a critical role in enabling

public and non-profit hospitals that care for a high number of low-income Medicare and

Medicaid patients to serve our communities. 340B allows our hospitals -- both rural and urban --

to reduce pharmaceutical costs for tens of millions of needy residents and stretch scarce federal

resources, just as Congress intended.

This valuable program, which was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush and

continues to enjoy broad bipartisan support, enables our hospitals to expand health care services

to the community, increase the number of patients we serve and offset losses from

uncompensated care. In some instances, the program allows us to keep our emergency rooms

and hospital doors open.

340B hospitals care for more than twice as many low-income patients and shoulder nearly twice

the uncompensated care costs as other hospitals. The program helps reduce the high costs of

treating indigent, uninsured and underinsured patients while expanding access to medications

and services at no cost to the government or the public. If the program were to be restricted, vital

services to the underserved would be cut back. Prescription drug costs for our patients would

rise dramatically and taxpayers would have to pick up the tab.

working together to protect and strengthen this vital lifeline for the community.
