Our Lady will be holding a special, socially-distanced ceremony to celebrate all of the graduates in our parish community! All college, high school, 8th grade, and any other graduates and their families are invited to the Our Lady of Perpetual Help parking lot on Wednesday, May 20 for a short ceremony to honor the graduates and give them a special blessing. Parishioners and community members are invited as well to show your support for our graduates.

The program will begin promptly at 6 pm under the south portico. Please arrive 15 minutes early to park and turn off your cars so that everyone can hear better. Graduates are invited to wear their caps & gowns and stand next to their car to receive the blessing. We will also have a small gift for each graduate.

We are so proud of all of our graduates, and we pray in hope for your futures!

ENTHRONEMENT OF THE SACRED HEARTThe Chancery is encouraging people to consider this practice, offered by Welcome His Heart, which is based here in Columbus, as part of the daily expression of their faith and prayer. During these times of shelter-in-place restrictions, it is good to expand and live out our faith within our homes.

Enthronement of the Sacred Heart points to the importance of family prayer and dedicating their family to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This local apostolate is seeking to strengthen the family unit both locally and beyond. They are providing religious images for families, a digital format to download the image and packet of materials and a website full of resources. This self-guided packet is faith-filled, and the prayers can be led by anyone.

Welcome His Heart is a Catholic organization designed to strengthen the family in these difficult times as well as in the future.

NEW LETTER FROM BISHOP BRENNAN 5.13.20Dear Friends,

With the anticipation of reestablishing public worship, we must do so in a way that does not irresponsibly place the health of our people in grave danger. We are still learning a lot about the COVID-19 Coronavirus, we have seen its tragic force in the death of so many people. We pray for all those who have died these months as well as for those who mourn. We have also seen heroic efforts by those particularly in the health care field but so many others who in invisible ways have provided for our needs. We are all united in sincere gratitude for the work and the sacrifices of these people.

We also pray for and give thanks for those who have prudently guided us through these difficult times at the national, state, and local levels. In particular, we are grateful for the respect, which the state of Ohio has shown, for our religious rights and liberties. At no point have they disparaged our essential right and duty to worship Almighty God at the sacrifice of the Mass on Sunday and encounter the Risen Lord in the Eucharist. Rather, partnering with our brothers and sisters in the civil order, we prudently decided that though divine worship is an essential activity so also is the protection of the common good and the dignity of human life. The medical and public safety officials have been warning us urgently that gathered assemblies of persons was gravely dangerous to the individuals present and to the common good. Faced with these dangers, we have exercised together our moral responsibility to safeguard human life and to allow the local healthcare systems to manage the care of the sick. This prudential judgment on our part required great sacrifice for all in the Church. You have also sacrificed in various ways these days. For us, as Catholics, the loss of our Sunday gathering for worship is a great sacrifice. You have made these sacrifices in a spirit of extreme charity and I am deeply grateful. These measures we have undertaken together, we are advised, have made a difference. Our plans for reopening need therefore, to respect all those sacrifices in a way that is responsible with care for the well-being of individuals and of the wider community.

As one public official told me, the COVID-19 Coronavirus will be with us for a long time and we need to learn how to live with it. Many of the dangers of gathered assemblies remain. The measures proposed in our guidelines and the work that is being done at the parish level will help to mitigate those dangers to some degree. Cognizant of your many sacrifices, I need to ask patience and flexibility as we begin this process of the return to public worship.

This week some churches are beginning to open for individual prayer. The hours will be limited and subject to the necessities of social distancing. Meanwhile Confessions continue to be available by appointment. During the week of May 25, 2020, some churches will begin to celebrate Weekday Mass publicly under limited circumstances as the Churches are ready.

On the weekend of the great Solemnity of Pentecost, May 30/31, 2020, most of our churches will begin the public celebration of Sunday Mass. Please note, many things to which we are accustomed will be different. Schedules will need to be modified for a variety of reasons. Not every Church will

MEMORIAL DAY SERVICESMemorial Day Services and Masses for the Catholic Cemeteries of Columbus have been cancelled for May 25, 2020. St. Joseph, Resurrection, Holy Cross, and Mt. Calvary Cemeteries will be open for visitation 8 a.m.-Sunset (4:30 p.m. at Mt. Calvary). Offices are closed and will not be receiving visitors. Burial locations and maps can be emailed. Call for information 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday and until Noon on Saturday.

be prepared, and some parishes may need to work together. As a matter of fact, since the fall we have been looking at ways that we might need to adjust schedules so that priests and parishes might work together and, in some cases, we may need to do so right away.

We also need to leave time to disinfect the churches and we may need to change locations to accommodate some of the larger populations. Parishes are not in competition but rather meeting the individual needs using the guidelines we are implanting. I thank you in advance for your understanding.

All Catholics in the Diocese of Columbus are dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass at least through September 13, 2020. Please, if you have any concerns, do not come at this point. In fact, I encourage all to follow the public guidelines here in Ohio as much as possible. If you are in one or more of the “high risk” categories, it is still too early to come out. And, of course, if you are experiencing any signs of illness, you have a serious obligation to stay at home. Given that the obligation is dispensed, individuals who wish to participate at Mass and receive Holy Communion might consider coming at a less crowded time, perhaps during the week. The Cathedral will continue to broadcast Mass each day on St. Gabriel Radio and to stream via our diocesan YouTube channel as will many of our parishes.

We will need to be flexible with last minute changes to schedules, and further changes may be necessary even after we begin. Out of care for you, the priest is subject to the same obligation not to offer Mass if he is showing even the slightest signs of not feeling well. No one is required to receive Holy Communion and the reception of Holy Communion on the hand is strongly encouraged. Please be respectful of the guidelines for social distancing and please understand that when the Church has reached capacity allowed for health and safety reasons, we cannot admit any more people under any circumstance.

Please take the time to read carefully the accompanying guidelines. And most of all, please pray. Pray for me, for your parish priests and the teams with whom they are working to prepare for the return to public worship. These days the Gospels take us spiritually to the table of Jesus with his Apostles on the night of the Last Supper. Reading these chapters little by little (John chapters 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17) might be a good spiritual preparation. And know that I pray for you with gratitude every day.

Many parishioners have expressed that they have concerns in regards to opening our church. We have created a form for anyone to submit their feedback and prayer requests. Note that many new procedures are being directed by the diocese, and we don’t always have wiggle room to do things differently. However, we greatly appreciate hearing from our parishioners!

Note in the letter that although public Masses are resuming, the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains in place through September 13, 2020. Our Lady will continue to make Mass available online each week for anyone who is unable to come to Mass.

I miss our physical church terribly.

As most of you know by now, we have twins in the parochial school. Until two months or so ago I would try to arrive twenty minutes or so before the official pickup time. This gave me time to pray the rosary in the chapel and then slowly walk through the nave to my car. Walking through that sacred space was often the highlight of my day. Regardless of whatever trials and tribulations I had faced, there was a reverent silence, a coolness from the heat of the day, faint scents of incense and candlewax hanging in the air.

I recently learned that Ohio is one of the most overcast states in the nation and the nave would often be shrouded in welcoming dimness. However, I loved those “mostly cloudy” days when the nave would be cloaked in darkness and then, suddenly, a ray of sunlight would pour through the stained glass. At that time of day, it would usually be when I was walking past the Baptismal fount. A cascade of brilliantly colored light would flood over the font and reflected in that light and water would be the massive Crucifix hanging above the altar and, even higher, the stained glass depicting the Crucifixion.

Alas, experiencing that is not to be. At least for the time being.

And then I am reminded of the first Eucharist when Christ offered Himself; body and blood and soul and divinity to his apostles. That was not in a massive cathedral, a beautiful parish church, or even a small country shrine. It was in the Cenacle, the cramped upper room in a home in Jerusalem, arguably the first Catholic Church. It was this same home where Jesus appeared to those same disciples after His Resurrection and asked for something to eat (Lk. 24:37 – 43) and where the Holy Spirit descended on them during Pentecost.

During Catholic persecutions in England, the sacraments were administered in secret, often in homes. In fact, “priest holes” were built into castles and country houses. These were secret apartments and chapels in secluded parts of the house, such as in roof space, where Mass could be celebrated in secret. Many of these were designed by Saint Nicholas Owen, a lay Jesuit brother who was eventually captured, tortured, and martyred in 1606.

In more contemporary times, Catholic sacraments are still being conducted in secret and in homes across the world. At this very moment Coptic Christians, Catholics in China, and others are conducting Masses and other sacraments quietly in houses. They are not fearing a momentary shuttering of parishes but fearing for their freedom and even their lives.

More importantly it is not our physical parishes, churches, cathedrals that are the Church. “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Mt. 18:20) The Church is not those amazing buildings and those beautiful grounds it is every one of us who holds Christ in our hearts.

When we are denied our parishes, I suggest we turn inwards to our domestic churches. Until we can celebrate together as an entire parish, we can pray together as a family. And not simply the “Bless us Oh Lord” before meals but sitting down together as a family to speak with God. One of my favorite ways to do this with our twins is asking them to consider what they are thankful that day, what they could have done better that day, and what they would like to ask God for. Once they formulate those ideas I simply sit back and allow them to chat with God about those three things.

I also encourage our family to turn their thoughts to God while going about our everyday family lives. Part of the Morning Offering I pray reads, “I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings…” With so many of us confined to our homes, day after day, it is these quiet domestic moments that we can offer up as prayers. I utterly despise cleaning the bathrooms and what a better way to offer up a minor suffering as a prayer to God for all those who have to clean bathrooms as a living and may, or may not, have employment at the moment. I love preparing elaborate meals for my family and can offer that up as a joyful prayer of thanksgiving.

As I view it, our Church did not begin in St. Peter’s Basilica. Instead it began in quiet domestic moments like Jesus sharing a cup of good wine with His friends Lazarus, Martha, and Mary at the end of a long day. The Basilica is important, but most important are the people that visit it and then return to their own domestic churches.
