At Glencro Center for Modern Aging, Healthcare Heroes are more than just those working in the medical field or as a caregiver, they are the support staff, security, housekeeping, dining services —everyone working behind the scenes supporting the front-line teams. They are those who have stepped into unfamiliar roles to help wherever they are needed.

And for that, we are immeasurably grateful.

In the comfort of your home.

To All OurSUPERHEROESTo All OurSUPERHEROESSometimes a hero is easy to spot, like those working the front lines of the current health crisis. Sometimes they’re standing beside us and we don’t even realize it.

Eleazar Urbina – Dining Services

Q: What made you choose this profession?A: I like watching the processes. Starting with ordering, onto prepping,

cooking, to plating and seeing the reaction of people experiencing their meal.

Q: Is it what you thought it would be? A: Yes, but I didn’t expect how fast I could develop into my role and all the opportunities available.

Q: How has the industry changed? A: Dramatically. The food industry has so many possibilities. I continually see the changes and trends and adapt to them.

Q: The best part of your job? A: My coworkers and never being hungry.

Q: What is the hardest part of your job? The constant balance of keeping customers and my staff happy.

Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your profession? A: Have goals. Make your own path. Be a constant learner.

Q: What made you choose this profession?A: A strong desire to care for people, especially the elderly.

Q: Is it what you thought it would be? A: It is everything I thought it would be and more.

Q: How has the industry changed?A: Over time it has become more regulated, but the necessity of providing care never changes.

Q: The best part of your job?A: Geing to know the residents and helping provide the care they need to be comfortable. Working together as a team.

Q: What is the hardest part of your job? A: Stress. When times are stressful, it becomes more difficult to stay focused on tasks and have a successful day.

Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your profession? A: Study hard, stay ahead of the new discoveries, take care of yourself so you can continue to take care of others.

This month we are recognizing all of the Healthcare Heroes at Glencro. This includes not just those working in the medical field or as a caregiver, but also support staff, security, housekeeping, dining services, etc. Following are Q&A’s from some of those heroes working in the various capacities on campus.

Barbara Pier – EVS

Q: What made you choose this profession?A: Knowing that I’m helping others makes this more than just a job. I chose this profession

because of my brother’s example of his servant-heart—He would take me with him to help the elders in our neighborhood.

Q: Is it what you thought it would be? A: Yes and more! It’s like having an extended family.

Q: How has the industry changed?A: More advanced products and different ways of doing our work more efficiently.

Q: The best part of your job?A: The residents and the good feeling of helping them out.

Q: What is the hardest part of your job? A: Having a resident pass aer geing to know them and their families.

Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your profession? A: Take pride in yourself and the work you do. And do your work to the best of your ability.

Q: What made you choose this profession?A: My love of customizing motorcycles to allow those with disabilities the continued ability to ride

was what made me choose my profession.

Q: Is it what you thought it would be? A: At the beginning of my career, yes. As I learned more about the profession and grew as a clinician, no. I did not realize the many avenues this career could take me. When I began traveling down this path in health care, I knew it was an opportunity to help others, but I did not realize the extent therapy truly impacted people’s lives.

Q: How has the industry changed?A: The therapy industry has changed in many

ways over the years. One recent change is our model for billing, which impacts the amount of time we can spend with patients. However, the passion and care therapists display has stayed the same.

Q: The best part of your job?A: The best part of my job is the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life.

Q: What is the hardest part of your job? A: The most difficult part of my job is the rare occasion when I can’t make the difference in a patient’s life that they are hoping for.

Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your profession? A: Jump in with both feet and learn as much as you can across all disciplines. Never stop learning.

Sarah took this $500 dollar gi to the elders at her church and cast a vision for what she and her husband wanted to accomplish with this money.

The Vision ContinuedThe idea of a convalescent home as first proposed by Pastor Melvin and Sarah Ruth, was kept alive by Dr. Henry Esch over the years by a series of events. In the mid 1960’s, Henry was involved with a feasibility study regarding a retirement home sponsored by

the South Pacific Mennonite Conference. At this time, members of the conference were polled to see what interest and support there was for a retirement community. The response was 90 percent positive. This gave Henry a renewed sense of purpose.

The Seed Bears FruitThe interest on the $500 given to Sarah plus some added funds, came to $825 by September 1970. The Lord wonderfully blessed the work as the sponsoring churches

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

One person can make a difference in the lives of so many people. In the early 1960’s, Sarah Ruth, a local Mennonite pastor’s wife, touched the lives of an elderly couple in her church community with her servant-heart. Sarah cared for them until their safety became a concern. Upon the death of this couple, it was discovered that they had gied Sarah with a $500 endowment.

campus has grown substantially and is home to over 900 residents. Specialized staff have continually been added as needs arise. All for the sake of our treasured residents who forever remain the heart and soul of Glencro.

Being vigilant of our mood at times of uncertainty can help us through these difficult times. The following are suggestions to help us maintain a positive outlook:

1. Practice gratefulness. Even when life seems bleak, there are things we still have for which we should be grateful. Keep a gratefulness journal or do a quick morning gratefulness meditation.

2. Start your day with a positive routine. Now more than ever, it is important to

start the day with a positive morning routine. Take a few minutes to find yourself before reading or watching the news—and smile. It’s surprising at how incredibly powerful a morning smile can be in helping you start your day on a positive note.

3. Slow down. Don’t rush into things, including any conclusions about information you’re geing from the news or family and friends.

STAYING POSITIVE DURING COVID-19 How to Keep Calm in the Time of CoronavirusExcerpts from: ThriveGlobal.com

Staying positive and optimistic during times of crisis can be challenging, but it’s critical to your mental well-being and immune system. Today, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, even individuals with the sunniest of outlooks may be having a hard time staying positive.

Page 9: May 12 2020 GlencroftLiving Uploadglencroftliving.com/images/glencroftliving/May_12_2020_GlencroftLi… · Staying positive and optimistic during times of crisis can be challenging,

4. Relax your body. Check-in on your muscles regularly and if you’re tensing up your jaw, or your shoulders, or if you’re frowning; breathe and relax. This also helps make mindfulness an ongoing aspect of your daily life.

5. Exercise. Make exercising a priority and incorporate it into your day. Aside from the physical benefits, exercising releases endorphins in your body which triggers feelings of positivity.

6. Nurture relationships. Check-in with family and friends through a phone or video call. It is likely that they too are feeling the same types of anxiety and stress that you are experiencing. Make an effort to contribute positively to the conversation.

7. Incorporate humor and laughter into your day. This is one of the most important steps you should take in improving your positivity. Studies have confirmed the short-term and long-term benefits of laughter on the human body and mind.

8. Walk away from distressful situations. It‘s easy to get pulled into negative interactions and exchanges that can leave us feeling distressed, frightened, insecure and pessimistic. Recognizing these encounters early on and removing ourselves from these situations can help us manage our stress and contribute to our positivity.

9. Have faith. Have faith in God; in humanity; in science; in technology; in our health care heroes; in collaboration; in the good in people; in our resilience; in our perseverance; in our ability to overcome even the most outrageous of obstacles to grow and evolve; in our future; in our constant and mutual commitment to improve ourselves and our communities; in our kindness; in our empathy; in our desire to provide a good life for ourselves and our loved ones; in never giving up until we find the right, permanent solution to end this virus.

Most importantly…Believe in yourself and your endless capacity to love.

SOME GOOD NEWS: People Do Recover from COVID-19Around the world, as many as half a million people are recovering from the infection. Oen this is thanks to the hard work of medical staff and the people who support them.

• Scientists are working to understand the virus and towards a vaccine with clinical trials underway.

• Formula 1 racing engineers at Mercedes have teamed up with the University College London to develop

a breathing device to be used instead of placing patients on a ventilator.

• A side effect of the reduction in manufacturing and vehicle traffic is a reduction in pollution.

With help from the Glencro Community Association, private donations and community grants, the Glencro Benevolent Fund has provided over 1,000 bags of food and essential items to residents and employees.

Items change weekly, but have included: rice, beans, sugar, flour, cereals, eggs, pasta, fresh produce, toilet paper, cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer.

DispatchHealth generously donated hand sanitizers and bags of food given to the Community of Faith for distribution to those unable to aend the Food Bank.

The food bank is open to residents every Wednesday from 8:00–9:30am and for employees beginning at 1:30pm.

Glencro CaresIt is easy to get wrapped up in the stress and frustration of the caronavirus pandemic. To help alleviate some of that stress, Glencro has stepped up to help its residents and employees through the ongoing Food Bank that was established back in March.

If you would like to contribute to the Food Bank, financial donations are greatly appreciated and can be made online at glencro.com, or by check. And as always, your donation counts as an Arizona Charitable Tax Credit.
