The Messenger firsT bapTisT hunTsville this sunday knowing, loving, serving Christ...together Volume 62 / Week Number 19 / May 12, 2011 FIRST THOUGHTS David Hull, Pastor High School graduation is a significant time in a person’s life. It marks a passage to a new relationship with friends, parents, and self. High School graduation is an exciting time; it can also be emotional and a bit frightening. Most of all, it is a time for the community of faith to enter into the experience with cheers, hugs, and prayers. We hope to do that very thing this Sunday morning. Each year we have a Graduate Recognition Service to celebrate this important achievement in the lives of our High School Seniors. Sunday is the time for this experience. We will recognize our graduates in both morning worship services. While the emphasis will be on graduates, the service is for everyone. We all need to keep growing and learning as we graduate from who we used to be and commence with the new that God wants us to be. Let this service remind you of the new beginnings that God has for you in your life. This role of graduation and commencement will be also be demonstrated through the preacher for worship this Sunday. On Saturday, May 14, Jane Hull will graduate in Atlanta with a Master of Divinity degree from the McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University. Three years ago she followed the call of God into new avenues of ministry and went back to seminary for training. She now graduates from school and commences a new chapter of ministry. Sunday the new graduate will preach for us in this Graduate Recognition Service. What is this “new avenue of ministry” that commences for Jane? Right now we do not know. She continues to be open to the call of God for the right place of ministry. In the same way that God confirms a call in my own heart to continue serving as your Pastor in Huntsville, I believe that God is even now preparing the right place of service for Jane. We will wait and pray and be ready when that time comes. In a venerable old building at Oxford University in England I saw the following quote carved into the stone: “I will study and get ready, and perhaps my chance will come.” (Abraham Lincoln) Jane has done a beautiful job of studying and getting ready. She will be a wonderful pastor when her chance comes. Life has been everything but ORDINARY these past few weeks. But life has offered us many opportunities for practicing Everyday Generosity. Hopefully you have taken advantage of these opportunities to offer yourself in service to others. God’s heart and hands have been evident in your response to the devastation and loss of life in our community and state. Continue to pray that God’s peace will replace fear and despair and that hope will manifest itself in the hearts of those most affected by this disaster.

“Take your EVERYDAY ORDINARY life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life – and place it before God as an

offering”. Romans 12:1

As recovery from the devastating storms continues throughout our area, there is a particular place First Baptist Huntsville is leaving a mark for Christ. The Welcome Home Village Road community in Toney is where many from FBC and Willowbrook Madison have partnered to bring hope for a new day.

We had ninety students and family members join the First Baptist “retired men” in cleanup on Wednesday, May 4. Many of Gordon Perry’s crew had already been in the Welcome Home Village Road community all week. The day was filled with clearing debris, cutting trees, picking up blown trash, and playing with the community’s children. We ended the day by sharing supper with the community.

The sounds of the day were chainsaws and laughter of children. As one of the residents said, “The day felt like a family reunion.” Where Christ Jesus is, there is hope even in the midst of sorrow.

First Baptist Huntsville left a mark of hope in the Welcome Home Village Road community!

Leaving a Mark Through

Storm Relief

Our Class of 2011 Speaks Out…on Who Has Influenced Them Caroline Stephens…Bill Lunsford, because of his unfailing faith and confidence. And I of course admire his ability to argue anything with anyone. Cole Franks…Rebecca Perry, for always being honest and helpful and having an amazing sense of humor. Catherine Cox…Kathy Nelson. Oliver Norris…Billy Orton is a great teacher, both musically and spiritually. Rachel Taylor…My dad, Randy Taylor. He works so hard preparing to teach, and I learned a lot from him and still do. Kenzie Broome…My parents (Todd and Casey Broome), of course! My parents have always been there for me, guiding me and teaching me through their own actions and advice, making me a better Christian and overall person. It is because of them that I accepted God in my life and became baptized. Stephen Westbrook…Jerry Miller! He brightens my Sunday every week. He knows the game of baseball and it was comforting talking to him every Sunday morning about the past week and what’s going on in the near future. William Bugg…I can’t pick just one...Jane Hull encouraged me to participate in World Changers in Dothan and Alaska. Jamie Mackey takes personal interest in me and has a great laugh, and several more. Ana Lankford…It is a tie between Bill Lunsford and Rebecca Perry. Bill got me involved in Sunday School in 10th grade and Rebecca Lynn almost scared me away from Sunday School in the 12th grade. Jacob Westerhouse…Probably Bill Lunsford and Mr. (Phillip) Roberts because they related to me the best. Sarah Fowler…Rebecca Perry. She is so open and loving to all of us, and she is so happy with her life even though it isn't what she planned for. She is an amazing example of joyfully following God's plan for her life. Ben Carrasquillo…Jerry Miller. He is so knowledgeable, yet so easy to talk to. He is always a friend and an equal, and taught us how to grow up without losing our inner child. :)

Patrick McDaniel…Nathan Alderson. He donates his time just about every Sunday for the last 2 years and even the occasional weekend. He is a great example on top of the advice he has offered through his own experience. Michael Kearney…Jamie Mackey. I get to spend time with his family – especially Cade and Story Grace. Jonathan Gravlee…Many of the teachers have always been there for me and more than willing to help me even if it isn't necessarily convenient for them.

Andrew Braun...Jamie Mackey. He reached out and really tried to get involved in our lives.

First thoughts David hull, Pastor

high school graduation is a significant time in a person’s life. it marks a passage to a new relationship with friends, parents, and self. high school graduation is an exciting time; it can also be emotional and a bit frightening. Most of all, it is a time for the community of faith to enter into the experience with cheers, hugs, and prayers. We hope to do that very thing this sunday morning.

Each year we have a graduate recognition service to celebrate this important achievement

in the lives of our high school seniors. sunday is the time for this experience.

“Take your EVERYDAY ORDINARY life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life – and place it before God as an

offering”. Romans 12:1
