NEW TESTAMENT LESSON 1 John 5: 1-6

E veryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born from God. Whoever loves

someone who is a parent loves the child born to the parent. This is how we know that

we love the children of God: when we love God and keep God’s commandments. This is the

love of God: we keep God’s commandments. God’s commandments are not difficult, because

everyone who is born from God defeats the world. And this is the victory that has defeated

the world: our faith. Who defeats the world? Isn’t it the one who believes that Jesus is God’s

Son? This is the one who came by water and blood: Jesus Christ. Not by water only but by

water and blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

GOSPEL LESSON John 6: 35, 41-51

J esus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and who-

ever believes in me will never be thirsty. The Jewish opposition grumbled about him be-

cause he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They asked, “Isn’t this Jesus,

Joseph’s son, whose mother and father we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down

from heaven’?” Jesus responded, “Don’t grumble among yourselves. No one can come to me

unless they are drawn to me by the Father who sent me, and I will raise them up at the last

day. It is written in the Prophets, And they will all be taught by God. Everyone who has lis-

tened to the Father and learned from him comes to me. No one has seen the Father except

the one who is from God. He has seen the Father. I assure you, whoever believes has eternal

life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness and they died. This is

the bread that comes down from heaven so that whoever eats from it will never die. I am

the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever, and

the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

May 2015

Help meet layette kit challenge This year the focus for donations for the 2015 UMC annual Ingathering is layette kits. The congregation at Moundville UMC is being challenged to donate enough items for 12 layette kits and we are challenging Briggsville UMC to do the same. We have a source for the sweaters but the following items are needed for each layette kit:

6 cloth diapers (new, prefolded or plain) 2 undershirts or onesies 2 baby washcloths 2 gowns or sleepers 2 diaper pins (with protective plastic closures) 2 receiving blankets (NOT quilted or knit-ted) All items must be to the churches no later than June 7, so that we are able to put to-gether the kits to take to Annual Confer-ence.

Find God’s truth in parables A six-week Walking Bible Study will be based on James W. Moore’s Jesus’ Parables About Priorities and give participants a chance to see if they can find God’s truth in the truth-stories from the mind of Jesus. The Walking Bible Study will be meeting 9-10 am on Tuesdays at John Muir Park on Hwy F, and starts at 9 am. Call or email the church office to sign up for the class.

It’s an eventful month for parish

On MAY 17 six young people from the par-

ish (two from each church) will be con-

firmed. There will also be a pancake break-

fast at Endeavor UCC (8:30—10:30), and at

Briggsville there will be a coffee hour and

bake sale after worship service to benefit

the Relay for Life. On MAY 24 please join us

in wearing red as we observe Pentecost.

Why red? To remind us of the fire of the

Spirit. Finally, there will be only one service

on MAY 31 when all three congregations

will gather at Moundville United Methodist

Church for a 10 am joint worship service

with Bishop Hee-Soo Jung. This service cele-

brates the centennial of Moundville UMC.

All invited to all-parish choir Your voice is needed in the all-parish choir that will be practicing twice, on May 21 and 28 at 6:30 pm at Moundville UMC. This special choir will be singing at the May 31 joint wor-ship service. Join us!

We would like to come together to wish Pastor

Julie (and Ted) Farewell and

Good Luck in her future
