Congratulations and Happy 60th Anniversary!

May 10, 2020 marks the Diamond Anniversary of Arden-Carmichael Council 4970. A wonderful

thing happened sixty years ago. It was on May 10, 1960, that the original group of fifty-six dedicated

members joined together to form Arden-Carmichael Council 4970. In all those years we have cared for

and served thousands of God’s people. We have raised and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars for

the benefit of our parishes and various non-profit, non-denominational organizations.

Our Council achievements has been recognized numerous times by the State and Supreme

Offices of the Knights of Columbus. These achievements could not have been possible without those

Brothers that went before us nor without the hard work of our current 160 plus Council members and their

families.

They say that Diamonds are forever. So, it is with our Council Brothers and Lady Knights. We have been together through thick and thin. We have experienced good times and bad, joys and sorrows. We have formed many friendships and shared memories galore. Our Brotherhood is solid and shiny as a brilliant diamond. The secret to our Council’s success is based on our enduring love and commitment to our Divine Lord and His Church, and to providing services which honor and give glory to Him.

We are proud of our 60 years of giving happiness, love, loyalty and service to others. We are

proud of our 60 years of helping Christ in His mission while at the same time honoring the fraternal ideals

proclaimed by our founder, Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. We are proud of our 60 years of

moving forward, in charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism.

Brothers, let’s bow our heads in prayer, then raise our glasses for a toast. We pray that our Blessed Mother Mary will now and forever protect and guide us in the continued success of our Council and of our programs and activities. We pray that the Lord will gift our Council with many more years of good fortune. May He grant good health and happiness to our Knights, Lady Knights and all the families of Council 4970. Amen. Our toast are words from Hellen Keller who said, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched; they must be felt.” Happy 60 Whole Years of Being Awesome and May the Souls of All Our Departed Brother Knights Rest in Peace! YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW

As Grand Knight of Council 4970, I am pleased to present this anniversary publication

celebrating our sixth decade of fraternal service to the people of Arden-Carmichael. A multitude

of Brothers and Lady Knights over the last 6 decades have worked long and hard to bring us to

this historic occasion. There have been challenges, for sure, but our Council has always met

them head-on. Our Council, in concert with the Arden-Carmichael Corporation, has flourished

based on trust in the goodness of the Lord and the sharing of His gifts with those in need of our

love, time, and concern.

It is a fitting tribute that this publication is dedicated to our last Charter Member, Brother Vincent A. "Vincenzo" La Bate. Sadly, Brother and Sir Knight Vince passed away in Carmichael on November 8, 2019 at age 94. Brother Vince was the last survivor of a group of fifty-six Charter Members who joined together to form Arden-Carmichael Council 4970 on May 10, 1960. He is now united with the other fifty-five in eternal life. Brother Vince was involved in many Council programs and was very patriotic. He dearly loved the Knights and was an inspiration, a practical joker and a friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him and working alongside him through the years.

The spirit and unity we enjoy as members of K of C Council 4970 and those of the Arden-

Carmichael Corporation help define who we are as Christians. We are pretty good at serving

our loving God by serving others as attested to by our accomplishments not only this past

decade but over the last 60 years. The future of any organization is only as good as the value

system of its leaders and followers. The values of our Council and those of the Arden-

Carmichael Corporation are both solidly based on the Lord’s teachings. We pray that God

continues to bless the members of Council 4970, our families and the charitable activities of the

Arden-Carmichael Corporation. We implore the Holy Spirit, our Blessed Mother Mary, and

Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney to continue to watch over and guide all of us in our

future endeavors.

THE END OF AN ERA The Knights and Lady Knights of Arden-Carmichael Council 4970 are honored and proud to dedicate this

publication celebrating 60 years of service in memory of our last Charter Member

Brother and Sir Knight, Vince La Bate. Requiescat in pace Brother Vince.

Brother Vincent A. "Vincenzo" La Bate, passed away in Carmichael on November 8, 2019 at age 94. Brother Vince was the last survivor of a group of fifty-six Charter Members who joined together to form Arden-Carmichael Council 4970 on May 10, 1960. He is reunited with the other 55 in eternal life. Brother Vince was involved in many council programs and was very patriotic. His patriotism was evidenced by his exemplary service in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Navy Sea Bee earning both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was called Sir Knight as a member of the Fourth Degree of our Order.

Vigil and Memorial services were held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church on November 20th and November 21st, 2019. Dozens

of Council 4970 Knights and Lady Knights joined Brother Vince’s family and friends at the services to celebrate his life. Our

Chaplain, Fr. Eduino Silveira celebrated the Mass. Members from Council 4970 presented a Resolution of Condolence to the family,

along with a pair of rosary beads blessed by our Supreme Chaplain, Archbishop William Lori. The Fourth Degree provided an Honor

Guard and a Chalice team adding to the solemnity of both services. A Navy Honor Guard team presented the flag of our country to

the family. The services concluded with an emotional Missing Man ceremony conducted by our GK Miguel Sabral (Staff Sergeant,

US Army-Retired).

I, and the parishioners of Our Lady of Assumption Parish, congratulate you and all the Knights

of the Arden-Carmichael Council 4970 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of its formation

on May 10, 1960.

Along these 60 years our parishioners as well as the parishioners of St John the Evangelist and

St Ignatius of which the Knights of Council 4970 are members, have benefitted a lot from your

witness to our Catholic Faith.

You witness not only by being faithful to Christ and His Holy Church and by being model citizens

but also by your many charitable works and many volunteer hours. We also thank your families

for supporting you and allowing you to serve and for their sacrifices.

Our Parishes have benefitted immensely, not only by your dedication of so many volunteer

hours to our dinners, social events and support for our causes, but also by your practice of the

faith and support for the teachings of the Church such as the defense of human life from

Conception to death by natural causes.

By your love for Christ and His Church you have dedicated many hours to raise funds to support

many of our projects including our ministries to children and young people. I want to thank you

for all you do for the Church and I pray that the Lord Bless you and all your works. May the Holy

Spirit continue to inspire you and guide you for many years. God Bless you and all Knights.

March 26, 2020 Grand Knight, Miguel Sabral: St. Ignatius of Loyola, the patron saint of our Parish and School, left us a great treasure in his Spiritual Exercises. The Contemplation on the Love of God is the concluding meditation of those Spiritual Exercises. It presents a God who loves without limit and who invites us to make a generous response of love in return. St. Ignatius begins this meditation with these words—“Love expresses itself more in actions than words.” That is a very succinct way of describing what the Knights of Columbus are all about in St. Ignatius Parish. According to The Life of St. Francis d’Assisi, Francis once invited a young monk to join him on a trip to the local village to preach. Honored to be asked and excited to learn from the master, the monk readily accepted. All day long he and Francis walked through the streets, byways, and alleys caring for the needs of the poor and helpless along the way. They rubbed shoulders with hundreds of people. At day’s end, the two headed back home. Not even once had Francis addressed the gathered crowds, nor had he talked to anyone about the gospel. Greatly disappointed, his young companion said, “I thought we were going into town to preach.” Francis responded, “My son, we did preach. We were preaching while we were walking. We were watched by many and our behavior was closely observed. It is of no use to walk anywhere to preach unless we preach everywhere we walk!” Over the last 60 years, St. Ignatius Parish has been both blessed and honored to have received spiritual, financial and physical support from the Brother Knights and their families. Just in this past year, we have seen the Knights serve in a variety of capacities—offering welcome and security at the dedication of our new School and Parish Offices, becoming Hospitality Ministers at our weekend Masses, hosting the Jubilee celebration for Religious of our Diocese, putting on pancake breakfasts to benefit our Young Adult and Youth Ministries, organizing clean-up crews to maintain the cleanliness and beauty of our campus. For your Scholarships to our 8th graders—thank you. For your Altar Server awards—thank you. For the thousand ways your faith expresses itself in service—thank you. For the ways your love expresses itself in concrete action that supports and strengthens our faith community—thank you. For all you have done these past 60 years—thank you. For all you will be and do in the next 60 years—Amen! Let it be!

Grand Knights 2010-2020

“God calls, and that's what we see in the vocation of the great leaders. In our tradition, a mission

always starts with a calling.” — Pope Francis, On Heaven and Earth.

Our Grand Knights are elected to provide leadership to our council. Through their example of faith,

charity and good judgment, our Grand Knights this decade continued to provide the model of the previous

50 years for our council members to follow. Through their leadership, they set a tone that has been open

and engaging, and ensured that our council’s growth in membership and service to our church, our

community and our youth continued.

2010 2011 - Herbert Holeman - Herb

started the decade bringing with him his

background as an Air Force officer. He not

only was our Grand Knight, but also

redesigned our website, and as our

webmaster for Columbian Year, we were

awarded the State’s top website. As a

writer he also coordinated our Council

Essay contest for our youth.

2011 2012 - Joseph Kievernagel – With over

60,000 KofC members in the State of California,

Brother Joe and his family was selected as State

Family of the Year for 2016. This prestigious

award was the third for the Council (see the

other two Grand Knights who received the

award later in this document). Joe has been the

driving force of our successful Fireworks booth

for many years during the decade, our

recruitment chairman and was also a constant

volunteer at the Sacramento Veteran Stand

Downs.

2012 2013 - Peter Mendenhall -

The Peter Mendenhall Family had

been selected as the State’s Family of

the Year in 2010. This honor began a

succession of three of our Council

families to be awarded this

prestigious award. Some of Peter’s

family is shown and to the right, as

Grand Knight, he presents

scholarship awards to two deserving

8th grade students.

2013 2014 - Leonard

Zerilli – Grand Knight Len

was the recipient of our

Supremes’ Star award for

his leadership in the

Council excelling in

service and membership.

However, Len saw the

council lose one of its

parishes, Presentation,

when it formed its own

KofC council. With it some 30 members transferred to the new council.

Later in the decade, Len became a Director of our Corporation where has served for many years. He is

also one of our gourmet egg specialist at our pancake breakfasts

2014 2015 - John O’Donnell - As John began

his term as Grand Knight, he was thankful for

the attendance at our July meeting with over

40 members in attendance. John led the

Council so successfully, that later in the

decade the State Deputy appointed him as

District Deputy for much of the Sacramento

area. Here he is presenting an award to

Brother Tony Carvelli.

2015 2016 - Peter Mendenhall - Peter had led the Council

in so many successful programs that he was again voted in as

our Grand Knight. Later he was to take over as the Council’s

editor of our award winning bulletin, the Paladin. He has also

been involved in our Tootsie Roll drives and served as a

Director of Camp ReCreation (the organization receiving the

donations resulting from our Tootsie Roll drives for the

Intellectually Disabled). He is a dedicated Pro-Life participant

in the Sacramento Life Chain and the West Coast Walk for

Life. As most of our Grand Knights, he and Lady Knight Joann

have “catered” our pre-meeting dinners more than once

each year since we started this program.

2016 2017 - Deacon Larry Niekamp - Deacon Larry, Lady Knight Norma and the entire Niekamp family was awarded the State of California Family of the Year for 2013, the second Family of the Year awarded to a Council family. The future lay ahead for Grand Knight Deacon Larry during the Columbian Year when he led the Council in receiving many State awards. Deacon Larry was involved in many of the council committees, including Veteran Stand Downs locally. He and Norma were involved in a number of outreach programs in Central and South America and the Get on the Bus Program at Folsom Prison.

2017 2018 - Peter Kilkenny - Peter

found time from his total immersion

in Council and Parish (OLA) programs

and ministries to lead our Council as

our Grand Knight. Recently he took

on the Council Warden duties, as our

elected Warden was ill for much of

the latter portion of the decade.

2018 2019 -

Joe wrestled with

the impact of the

major challenge to

our programs as

Supreme mandated

we implement the

Faith in Action

program. With these

changes also came

opportunities, so Joe looked forward, retooled, and moved on. With member participation, cooperation,

and our recruitment effort, we had a successful year.

2019 2020 - Miguel Sabral – Miguel

closed out a tremendous decade for

Council 4970 and his term reflected the

honor it was to follow in the footsteps

of a long line of impressive Grand

Knights stretching back six (6) decades.

His contributions in documenting the

council programs was passed on to his

Deputy Grand Knight and indicative of

the details that he focused on during

the year.

THANK YOU WORTHY GRAND KNIGHTS. YOU KEPT THE TRADITION OF “WORTHY” AS YOU

SERVED COUNCIL 4970 IN THE SPIRIT OF SERVICE TO OUR CHURCH, OUR COMMUNITY, OUR

YOUTH AND MOST OF ALL THE GROWTH OF OUR COUNCIL. YES, WE HAD SOME TURBULENT

TIMES DURING THE 10 YEARS, PARTICULARLY WITH THE LOSS OF TWO PARISHES AND THE

BROTHERS WHO BECAME CLOSE TO THOSE OF US THAT REMAINED AND CONTINUE TO SERVE

COUNCIL 4970. AND TO OUR NEXT DECADE OF GRAND KNIGHTS, WE KNOW THAT YOU WILL

Arden-Carmichael Council 4970 - A Decade of Progress 2010-2020

For the past ten years our council continued successful programs and added many new ones inspired by Supremes’ focus to lead Catholic men and their families in faith and service into action. There was a significant change in membership and Exemplifications by combining our first three ceremonial degrees into one. With the support of our corporation, Arden-Carmichael, Inc. we were able to donate over $250,000 to our parishes and various non-profit, non-denominational organizations.

A significant change in the parishes supported by our Council during the decade began when Father Leatherby became Pastor of Presentation Parish. Many men joined our council with the intent of Father to form a council at Presentation. When this occurred, our membership decreased from 240 to around 200. We lost some great Brothers but our loss was a gain by the parish and the Order in general. However, later in the decade, with the urging of the State Deputy, St. John the Evangelist Parish also formed its own council, taking with it some 40 Brothers from 4970, bringing our membership to just over 150. This latter formation was a major blow to our council since most of our members were parishioners at St. Johns. However, as we start a new decade, we are encouraged by gaining dedicated Catholic men from our two remaining parishes, Our Lady of the Assumption and St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Faith in Action

The implementation of the Faith in Action Program this decade modified our program structure to Faith, Community, Family and Life. Our council added a fifth area to cover a number of programs that supplement these basic four. That is, our Council Affairs program.

This portion of the supplement to our 50th Anniversary booklet highlights our programs, events and activities during the decade since the original

booklet was published.

FAITH PROGRAMS

Vocations - Seminarian Support Program. The Council annually supports one seminarian in the Diocese. Over the past decade, our chairmen, PGK Peter Mendenhall and PGK Peter Kilkenny coordinated our Vocations program and Brother Don Koscheski followed up with our sponsorship program by chairing our Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP). Working with our Vocation Chairmen, Don coordinates our sale of Council Christmas Seals. His effort has annually raised over $500 in support of our sponsored Seminarians.

Our Council Proudly Supported Seminarian Dean, now Fr. Dean Marshall. Father Dean was ordained on June 1, 2019 and celebrated his very first Mass the following day at St. Mel Church in Fair Oaks, his home parish. Father Dean served as our Council’s Spiritual Director in 2016-17 during his Pastoral Year at OLA. Our Current Chaplain Fr. Eduino Silveira, OLA Pastor and two of our former Chaplains this decade, Father Tom Bland Father Roland Ramirez

Council 4970 member and OLA Pastor Fr. Eduino Silveira, has served as our Chaplain since September

2016. He sees his ministry as listening, empowering, and encouraging parishioners to be disciples of

Jesus Christ. His goal is that all may come to know how much God loves us and live in that love. He is

shown in the photo enjoying a Breakfast with Santa event with OLA parishioners. We appreciate his

support. In the early years of the decade, SJE Pastor Fr. Tom Bland (now SJE Pastor Emeritus) served

as our Chaplain, followed by SJE Parochial Vicar, Fr. Roland Ramirez. Fr. Roland currently serves as the

Parochial Administrator of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gridley, CA.

Our deceased former Council Chaplains, Msgr. Patrick Nolan and Father Ted Wroblicky - Msgr. Nolan was not only a special spiritual minister of our faith but a very special “people” person. During the

decade and years prior saw Msgr. participate in a number of programs and as noted below one of two priests who came to a majority of our meetings and events. The council erected a plaque in his honor at his primary parish and one of our original council parishes, St. Philomene.

Father Wroblicky followed Msgr. Nolan as our Council Chaplain. He brought with him a different take on our Catholic religion, that perspective from the Eastern Ukrainian church, especially on the first 1000 years after Christ. For Father Wroblicky, we participated in special celebrations at his parish, Holy Wisdom, including the parish’s 10th anniversary program. At his funeral we presented Lady Knight, Barbara Wroblicky, with a Resolution of Condolence and rosary. Rest in peace Msgr. Nolan and Fr. Wroblicky.

Blessings of our Vehicles - Car Blessings, by Fr. Wroblicky, one of our Chaplains during the decade, and previously by Fr. Kiernan (It is a custom of Christians to have their cars blessed both when newly acquired and on or near the feast of the Prophet Elias (July 20th), as he ascended into heaven on a fiery chariot.

Dedications – OLA and SI During the decade we were honored to represent the Knights of Columbus (our Council and the Fourth Degree Honor Guard) at two special dedications. Earlier in the decade we participated in the dedication and blessing of the Blessed Virgin Mary Patio at Our Lady of the

Assumption parish (above left). Later in the decade we participated in the blessing of St. Ignatius’ new Parish School and Offices (above center and right). Our Council was recognized on the Donor Wall at SI for contributions to the new School and Parish offices (see portion of the plaque at the right)

Men’s Bible Study at St. Ignatius - This is a new program for us under Faith in Action and is led by Council Brothers Mike Fazio and Rich Romo. “Calling all men of the parish to join us for our next Men’s Bible Study. We will discuss the previous Sunday’s gospel. The Men’s Bible Study meets the first and third Wednesday of the month in the Rose Room (across from the Small Chapel inside Church) from 7-8 p.m. If you are looking to deepen your faith and grow in your knowledge of scripture, come join us. Spiritual Reflection

Our Faith in Action Program calls for a “Spiritual Reflection Program” as a part of the overall curriculum.

We had an excellent evening retreat at Christ the King Passionist Retreat Center which was very well

attended by our members and Brothers from other local Councils. This retreat opportunity affords each of

us to enhance his own spiritual depth and development.

Young Adult Ministry at SI - In the summer of 2018, the Council began to make inroads with various

ministries at St. Ignatius Parish. One of the first was to host a pancake breakfast for the Young Adult

Ministry. We again had a great turnout of our members to serve breakfast for the group. It was a huge

success. As noted, we always had our own membership table set up seeking younger Catholic men to

join with us in faith actions (this includes Fr. Chuck Kelly who joined our ranks.) Other programs the

Celebration of Consecrated Life and Jubilarians 2020 with Bishop Jaime Soto - Council 4970 joined with

Brother Knights from 3 other local Councils and the NorCal Chapter in a Celebration of Consecrated Life in February 2020 at St. Ignatius Parish. The meal was catered, but Brothers performed all the room set up, tear down, food serving and kitchen clean-up. The event was attended by Bishop Soto and many nuns celebrating decades of service to God and the Church.

very “Special Day” for the wives of those who have represented our order so well.

Pancake Breakfasts- Parish Santa Breakfasts are serious business as can be seen from the photos. You never know when Santa himself may make an appearance. Other photos show guests enjoying their meals, Brother Knights working the grill and SI students performing for the crowd.

The Knights of Columbus has a reputation as the pancake fraternal organization supporting its parishes, schools and ministries. Over the years, Council 4970 has been no exception to this belief. Early in the decade we hosted breakfasts at four of our parishes. As two of these parishes started their own council, we concluded the decade serving only St. Ignatius and Our Lady of the Assumption parishes. However, the numbers that we served seemed to increase, with the average number of attendees well over 1000

each year usually in December.

Our Lady of the Assumption Country Fair - In 2019 our Council again participated in the parish’s Country Fair. Under the coordination of our Parish Liaison, Brother Mike Dougherty and PGK Peter Kilkenny, with many Brothers, hosted the very popular Climbing Wall. This booth set records for fund raising at the OLA festival. There were over 2000 trips up the wall, the majority of which were 7-10- year-old girls and little kids! Of course, PGK Kilkenny had to show off his athletic ability by climbing the wall many times and out-climbing all takers in record time...What a BLAST!!!

Our Lady of the Assumption Ministry Fair -

Representatives from parish ministries and councils were

available to answer questions and to help parishioners get

involved with the various church ministries. Once again, our

Knights came through in solid support of the OLA Ministry

Fair. Thanks to our Council‘s highly visible presence, we

drew a pretty good response and secured signatures and

contact info from men interested in joining or in follow up

calls.

FAMILY PROGRAMS

Annual Family Ice Cream Social – This annual summer event has many of our families and friends enjoying an August get together at Leatherby’s Ice Cream parlor.

Family of the Month/Year Program - Our Family of the Month including a number of Family of the Month by the State Council and Supreme. TOP ROW: Here is Brother Shawn Herrick receiving a monthly award on behalf of his family. The Charles Cuny family, a tremendous family involved in our Fireworks Booth and Christmas parties for many years. And the Ken and Glenda Macdonald family, both doing so much in the council programs. BOTTOM ROW: Don Cooper (before his passing receiving the Family award, Roy Lasich, super chef for the council and the Loren and Aurora Family before Aurora’s untimely passing. Fireworks Booth - Our major fund raiser during the decade was and still is our Fireworks Booth. During the decade we have been located on the grounds of St. Ignatius parish on Arden Way, a very busy thoroughfare. As the decade concluded our gross proceeds exceeded $30,000 annually, netting around $10,000. Funds generated funded our Scholarships that are discussed elsewhere in this booklet. It takes lots of Brothers, Lady Knights and family members to run the booth for one week during the Fourth of July holiday.

Sacramento River Cats and Kings - Annually the Council attends one summer evening at a River Cats minor league baseball game at Raley Field. Fall and Winter had us at a number of Kings games, recently

in the new Golden One Arena downtown Sacramento (picture left with our lower bowl seating). Although the River Cats (remaining three pictures left) did win many games and went to a few playoffs, the Kings woefully had us waiting until next year (maybe next decade!). However, our Brothers, family and friends enjoyed the games and continued to come back, years after year. Brother Gene Gobbo has been our go-to guy for Kings seats with about 60 Brothers, family and friends attending. Ken Macdonald our skipper for the River Cats always had us in the home plate seating area, but couldn’t control the heat with temperatures for our July games in the 90s.

Altar Server and Scholarship Awards- Throughout the decade the

council presented altar server and scholarship awards to deserving 8th grade students from our council or our parish schools. Altar Server Awards (here to Shelby Martin from St. Johns) was given a nominal monetary award for her service to the parish. Scholarship monetary awards during the decade went from $500 to $1500 with 2 students from each the 8th grade graduating class from our parish schools who were

planning to attend one of our local Catholic High Schools.

Consecration to the Holy Family - This is a new programs under Faith in Action. Each family in a parish is invited to elevate themselves to the ideal model of familial love set by Jesus.

Our Lady Knights The following article was published in the Paladin in September 2018 and was written by our then

Grand Knight Joe Romanazzi in tribute to the Lady Knights of Council 4970.

Who Are These Women Called Lady Knights?

Saint Padre Pio said, “We have close to us an angelic spirit who never leaves us for an instant from the cradle to the grave, who guides and protects us like a friend or a brother.” Padre Pio was talking about our Guardian Angels of course, but with a few changes, his quote can easily be adapted to describe our Lady Knights. Lady Knights are Our Loving Angels. Like Guardian Angels, they often work unnoticed in the background in many of our Council activities and programs. They also

perform very visible tasks side-by-side with Brother Knights at fundraisers, Veteran Stand Downs, cooking and serving meals (and cleaning up the kitchen too), walking and holding up signs at Pro-Life events in Sacramento, Carmichael, and in San Francisco; attending Masses and praying their rosaries, organizing Christmas parties for the residents at Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home, and assisting with Get on the Bus to get children of incarcerated parents up to Folsom Prison for a visit. Many of Our Lady Knights participate in the things mentioned above, plus spend countless hours volunteering for a variety of other charitable, humanitarian, and parish activities.

Without their approval, support, and assistance, our ability to carry out our activities as Knights would be severely hampered. We cherish and hold Our Lady Knights in high esteem. We are very much aware of the sacrifices they make for us so that we can help Christ in His mission while at the same time honoring the fraternal ideals proclaimed by our founder, Father Michael J. McGivney.

One of the ways we demonstrate our appreciation to Our Lady Knights is inviting them to join us for dinner before the start of our monthly business meetings. We also enjoy taking Our Ladies out to a restaurant for a fine meal on Ladies Night Out. This event occurs on the fifth (5th) Tuesday of any month having five Tuesdays.

Importantly, Lady Knights are not forgotten upon the death of a Council Brother. We host an annual Widows Memorial Mass and Luncheon at which the Lady Knights of our deceased Brothers receive special attention. They attend a special Mass with a solemn ceremony, then the Ladies are treated to a delightful lunch.

Lady Knights play an indispensable role in the success of our Council. We appreciate and thank them for all they do. These Women Called Lady Knights are Our Loving and Special Angels. God bless the Lady Knights of Carmichael-Arden 4970.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Get on the Bus - Our support and participation in the Get on the Bus Program has been a very positive outreach effort by council members and through funding by our Corporation. This program provides free transportation to children and their caregivers to visit their parents in Folsom prison. A number of our Brothers and Lady Knights have also participated in the program as these children and caregivers spend a day with their incarcerated family member.

Veteran’s Stand Down - Sacramento Stand Down provides a safe environment in which our Veterans can connect with individuals who have their shared experiences and who have a singular goal of helping our Veterans cultivate hope so they can rebuild their lives. This belief is embodied in our goal of providing a hand up not a hand out. At Stand Downs, hundreds of homeless veterans are provided a broad range of services and goods including food and clothing; medical, legal and mental health assistance. Onsite job counseling and employment referrals are available and most importantly, companionship and camaraderie to lift their spirits. This is an opportunity for Brother Knights (and Lady Knights) to connect with the homeless veteran population and address this crisis that affects every town, city, and state in this country.

Cioppino Dinners - Master of the event, Gene “Papa Geno” as Pope Francis. Here PGK Peter Kilkenny sings an Italian song in honor of Papa Geno. Tables were full for another sellout annual event dating back to the 90’s initially chaired by Brother Frank DiLeo. Eighth Grade St. John students who were our servers for many years, perform an impromptu dance routine for the audience. Our 2019 dinner was the last with the new council at St. Johns responsible for events at the parish. It was quite the ride and many in attendance were saddened at our final curtain call. Wheelchair Appeal - Early in the decade Brother Eldon Hancock coordinated our Wheelchair Appeal and distribution of wheelchairs to those in need. Before his passing, Eldon distributed wheelchairs to the Health Ministry at St. Johns. We continued the program for most of the decade. The parishioners of Our Lady of the Assumption parish responded well to our appeal for funds to support the Knights of Columbus joint project with the American Wheelchair Mission. Enough donations were received to provide seven wheelchairs to children so they could go to school, or to adults so they could go to work, or to seniors so they could get out of bed and participate with family members and friends.

Masses for Deceased Brothers - The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “From the beginning, the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic Sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God” Over 50 of our Council Brothers passed on during the decade. We continued our spiritual rememberance of each

as we attended their funeral mass and presented to the widow, Lady Knight, or a member of the family a Resolution of Condolence and a special rosary blessed by our Supreme Chaplain. Paradise in 2018, our Council membership

without hesitation voted to send a check for

$1,000 to our Brother Knights at Paradise

Council 7773. Most of our Brothers in the

Paradise Council lost everything they owned,

including their homes and all their personal

belongings. We stood tall for our

organization’s ideals of Charity, Unity, and

Fraternity. A basket left on a table at our

2018 Christmas party overflowed with

donations amounting to another $1,000.

Therefore a total of $2,000 was sent by our

Council to assist Paradise Council 7773.

LIFE PROGRAMS

Annual Intellectual Disabilities (Tootsie Roll) Drives - With the leadership of a number of Chairmen during the decade, our collections and contributions from these drives continued very positively, in spite of reducing a number of our parishes and stores, now covered by other councils. Our support of Camp Recreation is unwavering and donations to the Camp’s programs in the decade exceeded $75,000. Each year these contributions had us first or second in the Northern California Chapter and in the top 10 within the State.

Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home – During the decade we continued our pro-life support of the Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home (BGMH) in Sacramento. Up to 25 Knights and Lady Knights visited the Home to present to Director Lenore Mullarkey and her successor gifts, home supplies and donations funded by Council members and families.

The BGMH is a home for women over the age of 18 who are pregnant and in need of shelter, food, safety, comfort and support during their pregnancy and for a short time afterward. We plan to continue

this ministry for years to come.

Life Chain – This Life program focuses

on our prayerful public witness standing for 90 minutes praying for our nation and for an end to abortion. Some dozen or more folks at the intersection of Madison Ave and Manzanita Ave in Carmichael reflects our visual statement of solidarity that abortion kills children and that we support the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception until natural death.

what is annually one of the nation’s largest

marches against abortion.

40 Days for Life - Council members joined with many non-denominational pro-lifers during the twice annual 40 Days for Life program recently being held on 29th and B Street and also on Butano and Watt Avenues in Sacramento. The program is an internationally coordinated 40-day campaign that aims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and a peaceful all-day vigil in front of abortion businesses.

Rose Sale –In support of the Sacramento Life Center, PGK Peter Mendenhall and Lady Knight JoAnn coordinated the sale of roses on Mother’s Day. In 2019 during Our Lady of the Assumption’s Country Fair, Peter was joined by Brother Mike Dougherty asking for donations. Again, a very successful program in support of Pro-Life Novena for Life- Each year the Knights of Columbus, during the Fall 40 Days for Life campaign, sponsor a “NOVENA FOR LIFE”. This is simply a prayer said for 9 days in a row (from the Latin word NOVEM, for nine). Past Grand Knight Peter Mendenhall passed out prayer cards (See above) at the rear of the church after each Mass. At least 25% of the attendees wanted a card, and many parishioners wanted several cards. A few parishioners wanted about 30-50 cards for

teen groups, bible studies, prayer groups, friend groups and extended families. One person got 100 cards to take to her Arizona parish. Approximately 600 cards were distributed. A reminder will be placed in the weekly bulletin that encourages the parishioners to say the novena.

COUNCIL AFFAIRS PROGRAMS

Council Christmas Parties – For many years the annual Council Christmas party had been held at the St. Ignatius Parish Center. Starting in 2019 it was moved to St. John’s Hall at Our Lady of the Assumption parish, our home base. Cake shared by all guests. Thanks to GK Miguel Sabral (2019-2020) and Lady Knight Debra.

As noted above our Council celebrated our Christmas family parties at St. Ignatius Parish Center. However, as two of our parishes formed their own councils, attendance at our parities were relatively small compared to the Center’s large gym. Below to the right are two photos of Santa sharing gifts to our children and grandchildren at the Center. Regardless of the location, our parties were family oriented and fun to attend.

Membership - Recruiting new members of any fratrernal organization is crucial to sustain the group. With the loss of a number of members from two of our parishes during the decade, we had to make an extra effort to bring in Catholic men and their families from St. Ignatius and Our Lady of the Assumption parishes. We succeeded to some extent particularly on younger members and parishioners who were very involved in ministry work at their respective parishes (“Always ask a busy man and there is where success is found”). To the left is an example as we signed up Brother John Gerges at a St. Ignatius event and drive. Others have joined and now are moving into our Faith in Action committee programs. We had our first Membership Night in 2020 at St. Ignatius (See parish bulletin insert to the right).

Exemplifications – During the decade, our council hosted the Formation and Knighthood Degree Ceremonies, averaging 60 plus candidates from Northern California. However, we relied on other council degree teams to host the Initiation or 1st Degree. Below are some of our candidates following taking their 1st degree. In the picture to the right joining PGK Gene Gobbo are Mark Miller, Russ Spear and Rich Romo. Pictured below joining GK Deacon Larry Niekamp are Rick Sandoval and Dale Stradford. In the second picture is Brent Jones and the third picture are Bruce Collins and Josh Figueroa joining GK Miguel Sabral.

Beginning in 2020, Supreme announced the Exemplificatoins in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Degrees were being combined into one ceremony. In addition, the ceremony would not be “secret” any longer and family and friends were welcome to view the combined ceremony. As the council formed its new Degree Team, the CoronaVirus/COVID-19 hit the world with a vengence affecting many people and events. Such was the casw with our new Degree ceremony. Supreme developed an online ceremony for all candidates and Brother Knights who had not received the 3rd or Knighthood Degree. On April 16, 2020, candidate Brandon Glass was welcomed into the Order as a full 3rd Degree/Knighthood member (former title). During April 2020 Brothers Father Chuck Tilley, Stu Figeroid, Tim Spinelli, John Gerges, John Carey and Mike Profumo moved up to the Knighthood level.

Installation of Officers – Many Brother Knights were called to serve and lead our council as officers over the last ten years. The 6th decade of the council brought with it many changes, events, new members while facing significiant challenges as two parishes left the council forming their own councils at Presentation and St John the Evangelist parishes. This brought our membership down from 230 to 155, Many of these former members of the council had gone through the chairs and were serving on various committees.

Appreciation and Recognition Certificates – The Council showed its appreciation for the support and contributions of clergy and member Knights by presenting certificates of appreciation and recognitions during the decade.

Awards over the Decade – Our 6th decade continued the excellence of our outreach, communications and programing. In fact, our Public Relations and our monthly bulletin, the Paladin, continued to be in the top three for many years. The State Council has since discontinued these awards.

PRAYER FOR POPE FRANCIS

O God, shepherd and ruler of all the faithful, look favorably on your servant Francis, whom you have set at the head of your Church as her shepherd;

Grant, we pray, that by word and example he may be of service to those over whom he presides so that, together with the flock entrusted to his care, he may come to everlasting life.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

KNIGHT’S PRAYER

Our Lady, Queen of the Knights, bless all the activities of our Order. Keep us true to our pledge, to extend the kingship of thy divine son on earth.

Through Thine intercession, win for us the grace, ever to exemplify in our public and private lives, the virtues that should characterize those especially dedicated to the service of the heavenly court.

Make us always aware that as your Knights, we are constantly observed, our faith judged, and our Order appreciated. Accept, O Mary, this renewed pledge of fealty and devotion, of Thy Servants, the Knights of Columbus.

PRAYER FOR THE SAINTHOOD OF

FR. MICHAEL McGIVNEY

O great and glorious God,

You imbued Your holy priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, with deep priestly virtue and especially with pastoral concern for the poor, the orphan, The widow, for the Christian education of youth, for the protection of the faith of the working man of his day.

Now that his priestly ministry continues to spread to countless millions throughout the world, through the efforts and influence of the order of the Knights of Columbus, which Father McGivney founded, we beseech you, Heavenly Father, to raise Your faithful servant, Michael, to the honors of the altar. We ask this favor through our Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Mother, Mary and our Mother, Amen.
