The Four Keys of Faith FormationThe Four Keys are provided to help you nourish your child’s/grandchild’s faith.

Scripture Readings for the Fifth Weekend of Easter:Acts 8:26-40; Psalm 22:25-31; 1 John 4:7-21; John 15:1-8

Family Devotions: In your devotion time this week, read the text from John 15:1-8. Children may not knowmuch about pruning, unless their parents are gardeners. The easiest way to help them get this story is toshow a dead branch and ask if leaves or fruit will ever grown on this branch. Pursue the discussion to thepoint that branches have to stay attached to the tree to stay alive. Note that the same thing is true of vines. The branches of vines curl up and die when cut from the vine. Then challenge listeners to figure out whatJesus was trying to tell us as you read the text.

Caring Conversation: Discuss in your household or small group: Jesus says that we show that we are his followers by producing fruit. What do you think Jesus means by “fruit”? Jesus tells us that if we are to bearfruit we need to stay joined to him. What does that mean, and how can we do it?

Family Service: As Lutherans, we believe that we respond to what we have heard through the Good News of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ – given for you for the forgiveness of sins. Good works(good fruit) happens, and we do not even know about it. As parents, you can “create” opportunities for yourkids to learn about service, with the understanding that service is not a “have-to” but rather a “get-to” –a “response-to.” Having heard the Gospel preached, we move beyond ourselves, caring for our neighbor.Think about the Scripture verses for the week and the conversations you have shared. God has giftedyou and your children with abilities, personalities, and certain qualities. As a parent, family member, or friend, you can help them discover their unique gifts by encouraging them in the things that they do well and feel passionate that they can serve others.

Family Traditions & Rituals: Pray this new prayer together at meal time: All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; so thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all God’s love. Amen.
