As an academy, we are (quite rightly) subject to a high level of scrutiny regarding our finances. This week we had

our Annual Full Audit (a whole week long) undertaken by Edmund Carr accountants. I am very

pleased to say that the visit went very well! This reflects the extremely conscientious and robust work of our

Finance Officer, Mrs Gilchrist. I would like to thank her for the excellent work she undertakes and also thank the

Admin Team for supporting her within her role. The resurfacing of Mill Hill Drive is now complete -

please accept my apologies for the disruption this week. It was challenging at times but your co-operation and

understanding was truly appreciated. Hopefully, the much improved surface will make the walk to school more

pleasant and less puddly! On the subject of puddles, the week didn’t start well as I

received a call from our cleaners at 5am on Monday morning to tell me that the library and Class 3E were

flooded. I would say that was an understatement as the water was coming in from the flat roofs and pouring down

the walls, across the ceilings, into the electrics and then soaking into books. It was not good! Then we found the Entrance Hall was also saturated. We are currently in the

process of arranging the insurance claim. In the meantime, thank you to all the children and staff, especially Miss

Elias and 3E wo have had to relocate to the ICT Suite. I would also like to thank Mr Lucas, Site Manager, on

Monday morning for literally wading in to get the rooms sorted. Let’s hope we are all back home soon.

Basildon Youth Theatre Year 3 had an exciting morning on Tuesday when they had their first visit from Lesley from the Basildon Youth Theatre. Lesley focused on the importance of friendship, teamwork and trying your best. The children were able to share with Lesley all the

exciting things they have learnt so far and how they have settled into the Junior School. During the workshop

they learnt different sign language actions whilst listening to stories and dancing. The children really enjoyed learning how it was important to respect each other and have fun as a team. Macmillan Coffee Mornings

This week, the staff held three, socially distanced, small coffee mornings to raise money for Macmillan Cancer

Trust. During such strange times, it was heart-warming to do something special to support such a valuable cause and, of course, it’s always a treat to have a slice of cake with a

cup of coffee. Thank you very much to Mrs Hennessey who organised the events and to all the staff who

supported.

50 Things To Do Before Leaving Primary School Well done to Keyla Osborne who has

Virtual London Marathon - 20 + 6 This turned out to be a bit of a disappointing day for me all round! Due

to the inclement weather, we changed our route the day before, replacing the trails (many of which were impassable due to flooding)

with roads - two 3.1 mile laps around Billericay and Stock. Miles one to three went well - so well in fact, that we needed to slow

our pace down … but then it all went a bit pear-shaped. The knee injury I had sustained just over two weeks ago seemed to cause my hip to over-compensate which resulted in quite severe pain. Sadly, even with pain-

killers and intermittent walking, the pain was unbearable so, after completing 20 miles in 3 hours 47 minutes, I reluctantly made the

decision to bend the rules a little and finish the course on my bike. As you can imagine, I was devastated to have to do this but, in order to

prevent more serious damage, I felt I had no option. However, never one to be found licking my wounds, I am more

motivated than ever to run the race for real and pleased to say that it has been confirmed as Sunday 3rd October 2021 for me - which gives me

51 weeks to et my hip/knee sorted and prepare! Thank you for your lovely messages of support and also for the

generous sponsorship I have received.

Assessment Week Well done to all the children in Year 6 who admirably rose to the

challenge of the various tests they faced this week. We were very proud of their positivity and commitment. Thank you to Miss Carroll

and teachers for all the time spent planning the complex timetables and to all the teaching assistants who supported

individual children.

Christmas??? Most definitely yes! COVID-19 is not going to stop the children and

staff at Buttsbury having fun at Christmas! Although we have had to cancel our trip to the pantomime, we will still

have our Christmas panto fun as we have booked a visiting theatre company to perform ‘Beauty and the Beast’ on Thursday 3rd December.

We will also be having Christmas Dinner as usual and the Friends’ Association have a number of events planned, including mini Christmas

bazaars for each year group bubble and the Christmas shop! We plan to go ahead with the Year 3 and Year 5 Christmas plays. It’s

highly unlikely that we will be able to invite parents in to watch but the children can perform to other year groups and we will also have the

plays filmed professionally. Although Christmas may look different this year, it’s definitely on our

agenda still!

Reverent Fowler Visit to Year 5 Yesterday Reverend Fowler visited our school to

talk to Year 5. As part of their learning in RE, she spoke to the children about her role and the events that take place in the church. They

were treated to an amazing PowerPoint of pictures and information about how the church

supports the local community. The children were very engaged and now have lots of ideas for

their next piece of work. We would like to say a very big thank you to Reverend Fowler for giving

up time in her very busy schedule to visit us.

Face Coverings In light of the difficulties we are having with social

distancing, you may wish to wear a face covering when you collect your child from school. This is NOT a school requirement though - just something you might want to

consider. Please note that face coverings are not an alternative to social distancing as social distancing is by far the

most effective way to reduce the spread of Coronavirus (as I was informed by Public Health England during a

webinar a few days ago).

Out of School Success

Well done to Abhir Kandagiri (4C) who recently passed his Red Belt in karate.

Congratulations to Miya Tyler (5M) who successfully passed her Purple Belt karate grading.

Well done to Jenson Wallis (3R) who was awarded the Player of the Match trophy at football, after an excellent first half in goal, followed by a hat trick in the second half.

Congratulations to Isabella Magee (3R) who recently took part in a sponsored walk on behalf of CHECT who have supported her friend through her treatment for eye cancer over the last couple of years. They raised an amazing £1065 between them.

Well done to Georgina Brown (5B) who was ‘Star of the Week’ at her Acro Class.

Christ Church Visits - Year 3 Earlier this week the Year 3 classes had the opportunity to visit Christ Church as part of their RE topic ‘Places of Worship’. The

children had a wonderful time visiting Reverend Fowler and learning about the different features within a church. Reverend Fowler also

described how a baptism and communion take place and the children were even able to take part themselves. The trip was very much enjoyed by all the children as well as all the staff. We would

like to thank Reverend Fowler and Christ Church for arranging such a fantastic trip for our children, especially as they were able to

accommodate us at such short notice having had our Chelmsford Cathedral visit cancelled. Thank you also to all the teaching

assistants and teachers who accompanied the children both days.

Billericay Food Bank Thank you, once again, for your generous donations

to the Billericay Food Bank. We were able to fill five car loads yesterday afternoon! Thank you to

our House Captains for helping to load the cars and to Mrs Stroud, Mrs Johnston, Mrs Cushing, Mrs Brown and Mr Grindrod, for delivering all the

boxes to St. John’s Church, Outwood Common, yesterday afternoon.
