Reasons Why Conferences Fail to Cause Real Change



1.A conference is physically and temporally separated from our regular lives, which makes it difficult to recreate the same energy once we return to our homes/workplaces.



2. Information is presented all at once so that you’re “drinking from a firehose.”



3. Presenters are not asked to design ongoing learning experiences beyond their session.



4. The conference itself is almost always a one-time event and there is usually no structure to support ongoing learning or collaboration that’s directly related to the conference.



5. We almost never give ourselves time to transition from the conference to our real lives, which means we haven’t had any time to really reflect on a) what knowledge we can really use, and b) how to really use it.
