  • The World has Changed

What does that mean for the Church?

“19 On the evening of that first day of

the week, when the disciples were

together, with the doors locked for fear

of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and

stood among them and said, “Peace be

    with you!” John 20:19

I remember when we moved from Albuquerque, NM to Izmir Turkey,

I was 12 years old, summer before I’d start Junior High (7th grade). As

a family it was great and scary adventure in 1966. First time flying for

all except my father. All five of us (I being the oldest of the three

Burdick children) were going to face some cultural and life changes

that we knew nothing about. Going into an Islam Country, part of

N.A.T.O. (my dad was in the Air Force), that was about 20 years

behind the comforts of U.S.A. Entering puberty is not easy on any

young girl, but in a foreign country with most not speaking your

    language. I was overwhelmed.

My faith and family got me through the year of transition, and by the

end of the second year, I was not eager to return to the U.S.A. – I had

learned to appreciate the culture, the simplicity, and the life as I had

changed from a child into a young woman.

Right now I am feeling some of the angst as I did at 12. This COVID-

19 crisis is unpredictable. The world I knew and understood is

changing, and I don’t know what it will look like in the future. The

disciples felt that way too on Sunday morning. Jesus, their

Messiah/Rabbi, tortured and killed. What were they to do? They had

just spent their last 3 years adjusting to what it meant to follow

Jesus…now He was gone, murdered, and their lives were threatened.

And then Jesus appears and say: “Peace be with you!”

We don’t know the future, but we do know who holds our hand and

    life eternal.

As a place to worship, we have been called to do the ministry God directs as stated in Matthew 28. We are a body of believers that all have broken lives and pasts that may be tarnished in many different ways. Some of our body of believers may have a history of incarceration and/or legal standings that

have been deemed not suitable for society. Our church is a place full of sinners in need of a Savior. All are welcome. The MUMC has in place

guidelines to help provide the safest possible environment and reflects God’s grace and mercy for all.

Have you missed a Sunday Worship Service and wondered what the message was on? Have you ever left church and thought, “I wish I could share that message with someone”? No problem! You can watch the MUMC Worship Videos on youtube!

GIVING ~ “In remembrance of me heal the sick”

And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ And the

king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least

of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ (Matthew 25:39-40)

In the 2nd & 3rd centuries AD, when pagans far outnumbered Christians, a

pair of epidemics rocked the Roman Empire. After the second in 252 AD,

Dionysius (190?-264), Bishop of Alexandria, wrote in an Easter letter how

Christians had behaved better toward the sick, than had the pagans. The

pagans had run from the sick, abandoned relatives, ejected the dying from

their homes and left the dead in the streets. In contrast, Christians

diligently ministered to the sick and prepared the dead for burial. As a

result, many Christians, themselves, became ill and died; it was a death akin

to martyrdom, in the Bishop’s opinion.

The sociologist of religion Rodney Stark, in the Rise of Christianity, has

argued that this behavior of early Christians, and similar behavior during

other epidemics, was critically important in the early growth of Christianity

and its displacement of pagan polytheism. Christians survived at higher

rates, the plague disrupted their communities less, they exhibited less fear,

and they helped those in dire need. The pagans noticed and in subsequent

years, the ranks of Christianity swelled.

One can only hope that history will remember the service and witness of our

generation of Christians in the time of the coronavirus epidemic. Did we

pray together, did we continue to worship, though from afar, did we give to

financially support the mission and ministry of the church? Did we support

charities caring for the poor and sick, did we help teach the children home

from school, did we help the laid off and furloughed apply for benefits, and

did we help the disenfranchised vote, and so on? You are the answer to my

questions. Jim Wells, Wisconsin United Methodist Foundation
