My Historical NarrativeAs  we  were  getting  ready  to  leave  for  the  award

assembly,  the  royal  photographer  got  each  of  us  to  stand  next  to  the  president  so  we  could  each  have  a  photo  in  the  presidential  palace.  Suddenly  the  <lash  of  the  camera  blinded  me.  In  my  mind,  I  still  couldn’t  imagine  myself  standing  here,  next  to  the  president  and  receiving  an  award  as  a  good  deed  representative  of  Taiwan.

Woah!  I  couldn’t  believe  my  eyes.  In  the  auditorium  I  could  see  at  least  30  cameras  set  in  the  back  of  the  stage.  My  heart  was  beating  so  hard  that  I  felt  sick;  this  was  a  situation  I  had  never  experienced  before.

We  got  our  seats  assigned  in  the  middle  of  the  front  row.  Then  the  good  deed  representatives  from  last  year  came  over.  “Hello,  it’s  so  nice  to  meet  you  all.  You  ladies  and  gentlemen  must  have  done  in<inite  moral  things  in  order  to  be  receiving  this  award.  On  behalf  of  Taiwan,  I  want  to  say  thank  you,  every  one  of  you.”    It  was  such  an  honor  to  meet  them,  I  thought.  “I  am  here  to  teach  you  the  procedure  for  receiving  this  award,”  one  of  the  representatives  explained.

The  light  from  the  stage  was  making  me  feel  like  being  out  on  a  hot  summer  day.  Sweat  dripped  down  my  face.  I  wasn’t  sure  if  I  was  wearing  too  much  or  I  if  I  was  just  too  anxious.

“Ok,  now  you  all  can  just  hang  out,  but  don’t  go  too  far  away  though,”  one  of  the  representatives  said  as  he  dismissed  us  after  we  all  clearly  understood  the  procedure  for  receiving  this  award.  My  feet  moved  fast  and  brought  me  out  of  the  auditorium.  “Ding”  I  heard  the  elevator’s  arrival

Matthew Historical Narrative Page 4

Page 5: matthew01pd2018.identityportfolio

sound.  I  glanced  at  my  watch.  An  hour  from  now  I  would  be  on  the  stage  receiving  the  award,  my  mind  estimated.

“Woah!  Look  who’s  standing  there?  The  good  deed  representative  of  Taiwan!”  I  heard  someone  holler.  I  felt  calmed  when  I  heard  that  sound,  my  son’s  voice.

”Thank  god!  You  guys  are  <inally  here!”  I  exclaimed.  My  son  Matthew  some  how  must  have  eaten  too  many  candies  before  coming  here!  My  head  stopped  sweating;  the  anxiety  seemed  to  be  gone.

After  my  family  had  arrived,  people  were  like  waters  <looding  in;  suddenly  the  auditorium  was  full  of  people!  The  assembly  was  just  about  to  start!

All  of  the  good  deed  representatives  gathered  all  together  again.  The  <irst  nine  people  that  were  going  on  the  stage  got  to  the  back  of  the  stage  to  get  ready.  I  felt  sweat  on  my  palms.  I  reviewed  what  we  had  practiced  before.  “Brandon  Lin,  the  chairman  of  Concordia  Charitable  Foundation.  He  had  delivered  millions  of  lunch  to  vulnerable  people  in  Taiwan!  Let’s  give  our  biggest  round  of  applause  to  welcome  Brandon  Lin!”  the  announcer  would  bellow,  and  then  I  would  walk  in  my  <inest  posture  to  the  stage  and  wave  at  the  audience.  Just  do  what  I  had  practiced  and  I  would  be  <ine  I  comforted  myself.  Suddenly  “Cheng  Shu  Jv!”  the  announcer  hollered!  The  shout  terri<ied  the  freak  out  of  me!  The  comfort  had  <lown  away,  and  I  once  again  became  apprehensive.  The  next  one  was  me;  the  next  one  was  me,  this  phrase  kept  on  repeating  in  my  brain.  My  worries  burned  to  the  top  of  my  head!  I  didn’t  care  about  anything  other  than  to  successfully  <inish  this  assembly!

Matthew Historical Narrative Page 5

Page 6: matthew01pd2018.identityportfolio

“Brandon  Lin,  the  chairman  of  Concordia  Charitable  Foundation.  They  had  delivered  millions  of  lunch  to  vulnerable  people  in  Taiwan!  Lets  give  our  biggest  round  of  applause  to  welcome  Brandon  Lin!”  The  announcer  declared.  Just  like  how  I  practiced,  I  stood  up  and  strolled  to  the  stage  giving  my  best  posture.  The  rhythm  of  my  heartbeat  matched  the  pace  of  my  shoes  softly  feeling  the  stage.

So  this  was  how  it  felt  to  be  stared  at  by  a  few  thousand  people,  I  thought.  By  this  moment  I  felt  that  I  was  a  powerful  man;  by  having  the  ability  to  help  others  and  receive  this  honorable  award.  The  voice  of  applause  <illed  my  ear.  “Thanks  to  all  of  your  applause,  but  I  want  to  tell  you  all  something.  Being  able  to  receive  this  award  and  standing  here  listening  to  all  of  your  applause  was  not  my  Merit.  I’m  just  a  representative  for  all  the  people  that  helped  my  charity!”  I  stated  to  the  audience.  “Let’s  give  a  round  of  applause  to  all  the  charity  members!”  I  yelled.  Then  I  started  clapping,  and  so  on,  and  so  on  people  started  clapping  too!

“Brandon  Lin  had  helped  millions  of  vulnerable  people  in  Taiwan  and  he  had  also  donated  lots  of  money  to  construct  schools  for  homeless  children!”  the  announcer  clari<ied  what  I  had  done.

I  still  remember  that  my  father  had  told  me  that  when  you’re  more  powerful  than  others,  you  should  help  others  that  need  help.  The  heat  of  the  light  heated  my  back.  The  worries  had  all  disappeared,  now  I  was  looking  forward  to  when  would  I  receive  the  award!  After  the  long  story  explaining  what  ethical  things  I  had  done,  an  old  man  came  up  the  stage  with  a  red  strap  that  has  golden  texts  on  it  and  also  carrying  the  trophy  that  represents  the  award.  I  tried  to

Matthew Historical Narrative Page 6

Page 7: matthew01pd2018.identityportfolio

focus  my  eyes  on  the  audience,  but  I  couldn’t  help  myself  from  looking  at  the  trophy!

“Thank  you  for  what  you  had  done  and  contributing  to  Taiwan.  I  had  heard  lot  of  stories  about  you  and  your  charity!”  The  old  man  thanked  me.  I  felt  so  respected  when  everybody  noticed  me.  The  old  man  put  the  red  strap  on  me  and  gave  me  the  golden  trophy!  The  trophy  was  so  bright  and  I  could  marginally  feel  the  cool  air  from  the  surface  of  the  trophy  breathing  on  my  hand.  This  was  the  best  day  ever!

I  went  down  the  stage  and  grabbed  a  seat.  My  family  was  waving  and  smiling  at  me  with  pride.

Interview  questions  and  answers! What  happened  that  day?

• That  day  when  I  wake  up  I  felt  an  excitement  • I  know  that  the  award  is  the  most  honorable  award  in    all  of  the  good  charity.(慈善機構)and  this  award  is  created  by  蔣介石  1958  made.

• I  equipped  into  (西裝打領帶)• I  drove  my  car  to  the  award  assembly  place.  That  is  a  place  where  they  introduce

you.  Why  you  received  the  award,  what  job  do  you  do?  I  received  the  award  because  I  the  charity  is  very  warn  hearted  and  we  worked  very  hard  for  ten  years.

• All  over  the  entire  country  only  27  people  received  this  award.• 孫逸仙(sun  yi  xian)’s  son  used  to  be  one  of  the  chairman  for  this  award.

Confucius’s  72  代  grandson.  When  lian  zan  is  Taiwan’s  vice  president  he  is  this  association’s  chairman  too.

•  After  the  assembly,  all  of  the  good  deed  representatives  got  on  the  best  quality  bus  that  the  president  had  prepared  for  them.  On  the  bus,  the  guide  told  them  that  no  matter  what  they  had  done,  receiving  this  award  is  the  most  honorable  thing  ever.  NO  matter  what  you  do,  receiving  this  award  is  not  just  people  knowing  it,  the  gods  up  in  the  sky  would  all  know.  On  the  bus,  a  good  deed  representatives  sat  next  to  my  dad,  he  got  a  type  of  disease  that  made  him  not  able  to  walk,  but  he  used  all  of  his  money  to  help  people  that  lives  in  mountains  build  a  road  that  is  not  that  bumpy  and  hard  to  walk  on.  My  dad  felt  that  what  he  had  done  is  even  more  honorable.

• The  bus  drove  to  executive  palace  and  the  vice  executive  which  is  the  executive  now  greeted  them.  One  guy  introduced  them  and  then  the  vice  executive  say  that  the  group  is  very  good.  The  government  needs  to  do  a  lot  of  works  to  help  this  community  become  better,  but  some  of  the  works  the  government  is  not  able  to  do  and  these  works  would  need  people  of  Taiwan  to  do  them.  Such  as  doing  so  many  good  things  like  us.  The  government  wouldn’t  be  able  to  do  all  of  these  tiny  puny  things  so  some  of  them  it  need  people  to  do.  The  vice  executive  kept  on  encouraging  us  that  we  did  a  very  good  job.  He  begged  us  to  keep  on  doing  all  of  these  great  things.

• After  they  left  the  executive  palace  they  got  on  the  bus  again  and  went  to  the  presidential  palace.  The  bus  ride  is  very  short  but  it  seemed  like  a  long  time.  My  dad  is  very  delighted  because  he  thinks  that  doing  all  of  these  things  is  what  he’s  suppose  to  and  now  people  are  all  thinking  that  he’s  so  good  and  stuff.  Even  the  president  is  giving  an  award  to  him.

• They  got  to  the  presidential  palace  and  that  he  chatted  with  one  of  the  guard  over  there.  He  told  him  that  he  is  one  of  the  guards  here  30  years  ago  too.  The  guard  looked  at  him  in  curiosity  and  smiled  at  him.  Before  going  into  the  palace  they  can’t  bring  their  cell  phone,  and  they  need  to  have  a  lot  of  security  check  before  going  into  the  palace.  In  the  palace  there’s  a  guide  that  brings  them  to  the  president,  in  the  presidential  palace  you  can’t  wonder  around  and  you  can’t  randomly  take  photos.

Matthew Historical Narrative Page 8

Page 9: matthew01pd2018.identityportfolio

They  went  to  the  rainbow  room.  When  the  president  see  people  like  us  they  would  all  meet  in  the  rainbow  room  because  rainbow  means  different  colors  all  mixed  together  which  have  a  great  meaning  of  good  and  kindness.  The  president  said  that  Taiwan  is  helped  by  America  and  other  countries  in  1950  dai.  That  time  Taiwan  is  very  poor,  KMT  just  got  to  Taiwan.  When  the  president  is  talking  about  this  thing  my  dad  still  remembers  that  when  he’s  young,  people  go  to  school  with  pants  that  says  made  from  USA.  (Story  about  president)  Now  Taiwan  is  getting  rich  we  started  helping  people  in  other  countries.  The  president  thanked  the  good  deed  representatives.  The  president  talked  about  Taiwan’s  community  and  that  because  in  Taiwan  there’s  people  like  us  who  helps  vulnerable  people  and  not  just  people  from  Taiwan,  we  even  started  helping  other  countries.  The  president  started  talking  about  their  family  and  what  his  grand  parents  said.  Their  grand  parent  said  something  that  means  to  help  others  and  to  be  kind.  What  the  president’s  grand  parents  said  has  the  same  meaning  of  what  our  grand  parent  said.  Then  the  good  deed  representatives  took  photos  with  the  president.  The  president  thanked  them.

What  was  your  feeling  about  the  award?

My  dad  was  nervous  and  kind  of  excited.  My  dad  thinks  that  he  didn’t  really  do  a  lot  and  the  country  made  such  a  big  assembly  to  thank  us.  My  dad  felt  really  happy.  Because  that  this  award  people  take  it  very  serious  and  that  there’s  going  to  be  a  lot  of  video  taping  and  taking  photos,  before  the  actual  assembly  all  of  the  good  deed  representatives  would  need  to  have  a  practice  going  up  the  stage  and  stuff.  Then  my  dad  kind  of  got  nervous  and  a  bit  worried  because  he  could  see  how  important  this  award  is.  Kind  of  happy  too  because  he  get  to  be  awarded  in  such  an  important  and  meaningful  award.  Thinking  that  what  he  did  is  something  that  meaningful  to  the  country  and  he  felt  happy  about  that.  Because  that  it  was  that  important  everybody  came.  (Relatives)  and  (people  from  the  charity).  This  award  is  an  resemble  to  how  people  thanked  us  for  doing  all  these  moral  things.  My  dad  thinks  that  this  award  is  earned  by  all  of  the  people  that  helped  in  our  charity  and  that  my  dad  is  only  a  representative  for  them  to  receive  this  award.  All  of  them  felt  happy  of  doing  all  of  these  moral  things.

What’s  the  timeline  of  the  story?

1.  Before  everybody  got  there,  all  of  the  good  deed  representatives  arrived  and  got  there  seat  assigned  in  the  middle  of  the  front  row.  2.  The  good  deed  representatives  from  last  year  came  to  help  them  know  the  concepts  of  what  they’re  going  to  do  during  the  assembly  and  thanked  them  for  what  they  all  had  done  to  receive  this  honorable  award.3.    They  are  separated  into  three  different  groups  when  going  up  to  receive  the  award.  After  one  group  had  been  up,  there’s  going  to  be  someone  that’s  not  a  good  deed  representative  goes  up  to  have  a  speech.  Basically  the  speech  is  complimenting  the  good  deed  representatives.  Beside  the  people  going  up  to  have  a  speech  there  was  also  cool  performances.

Matthew Historical Narrative Page 9

Page 10: matthew01pd2018.identityportfolio

4.  My  dad  was  the  second  one  going  on  stage  because  he  got  the  second  highest  ranking  of  points.  The  points  are  given  by  the  people  those  choses  who  was  going  to  be  a  good  deed  representatives.  Which  belong  in  the  <irst  group  going  on  stage.  People  are  called  on  stage  like:  the  group  with  nine  people  <irst  all  go  to  the  back  of  the  stage,  then  the  they’ll  announce  your  name  and  tell  the  reason  why  you  received  this  this  award.

What  was  your  feeling  about  receiving  the  award?

Went  into  the  auditorium:  When  he  walked  into  the  auditorium  he  could  see  the  background  of  the  stage  has  a    sign  saying  (中華民國99年全國好人好事代表八德獎頒獎典禮)  My  dad  felt  so  honored,  he  had  never  been  in  this  kind  of    high  quality  situation.  He  feels  super  joyful  and  in<inite  brilliance.  I  could  tell  that  there  are  at  least  30  cameras  and  video  tapers  in  the  back  of  the  stage.    In  the  other  sight  of  hand,  my  dad  also  felt  a  bit  nervous  because  of  how  important  it  feels.  When  he  got  on  stage:  He  felt  like  a  suave  man  when  he  got  on  the  stage.  He  walked  on  the  stage  with  his  best  posture  and  think  that  he  is  an  effective  man  that  helps  vulnerable  people.  He  felt  happy  of  doing  what  he  had  done.  He  felt  powerful.  My  grampa  told  my  dad  that  if  you’re  more  powerful  than  you  should  help  others  that  needs  help.  He  felt  that  he’s  in  the  middle  of  community  (A  powerful  man).  When  my  dad  was  standing  on  the  stage  he  felt  that  he  is  someone  that’s  powerful  enough  to  help  others  so  that’s  why  he  received  this  ward.  After  the  whole  day:  Happy,  After  doing  all  of  these  moral  things  he  received  an  award  given  from  the  country  thanking  him.  The  important  thing  is  that  he  feels  very  joyful  in  the  deep  end  of  his  heart.  What  we  have  in  the  front  of  my  grand  parents  door  is  that  (The  family  who  does  moral  things  they  would  de<initely  have  a  good  result  at  the  end.)  For  the  result  is  that  my  dad  had  done  great  on  his  job.  His  way  of  life  is  had  been  pretty  successful.  Family  is  very  warm  and  full  of  joy.  After  the  assembly,  everyone  of  us  went  dashing  up  the  stage  and  took  photos  with  my  dad  with  the  background  of  the  sign!  The  ending  made  me  feel  the  same  when  the  president  had  the  speech  to  us.  (Blissful)Ending:  After  the  assembly  my  dad  went  celebrate!  We  did  a  lot  of  moral  things  but  we  got  even  more  rewards.

ReflectionWhat  specific  challenges  did  you  face  during  this  project?I  don’t  know  what  moment  should  I  focus  on.  What  kind  of  informa7on  do  I  need.

What  did  you  learn  about  your  family  member?  (personality,  character…)Nothing,  because  I  already  knew  a  lot  about  this  event!  My  dad  always  tells  me  about  stuff  that  our  charity  had  done  and  that    should  do  these  things  when  I  grow  up,  too.

What  did  you  learn  about  yourself  (as  a  learner,  as  a  family  member)?I’m  the  son  of  a  good  deed  representa7ve  of  Taiwan.  My  family  has  the  ability  to  help  others  and  we  did,  and  con7nue  to  do.

How  have  you  grown?  (as  a  writer…)I  now  know  what  kind  of  things  I  should    focus  on  while  wri7ng  a  narra7ve.  ADer  geEng  the  help  by  Ms.  Leininger,  I  now  know  how  to  show  and  not  tell  while  wri7ng  a  story.

Why  do  you  think  doing  a  project  like  this  is  important? It  gives  you  a  chance  to  know  more  about  your  family.  Your  family  could  get  closer  when  you  know  more  about  each  other.

What  part  of  this  process  did  you  enjoy  most?  Why?I  enjoyed  gathering  ideas  because  gathering  ideas  from  my  dad  is  easy.  He  just  give  you  a  bunch  of  informa7ons  and  I  would  just  write  all  of  it  down!

What  part  of  this  process  did  you  least  enjoy?  Why?I  don’t  like  the  feeling  when  I’m  stressing  out  about  what  to  write  about.  For  the  last  few  days,  I  always  sleep  late  because  of  wri7ng  the  narra7ve.
