Cysto
•Abbreviation for Cystoscopy•Viewing of the urinary bladder•Uses instrument called Cystoscope •Inserted through urethra
Cystoscope
•May be flexible or rigid
•Has lens similar to microscope
• Used with local anesthetic
•Focuses on inner surface of urinary tract
RP
• Procedure
•Stands for Retrograde Pyelogram
•Dye is inserted through urethra to outline bladder, ureter s and renal pelvis
RP uses
•Detects Kidney stones or tumors
•Used during placement of Ureteral stints
•Distinguishes renal anatomy during surgery
•Requires cytoscopy
ESWL
•Stands for Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy
•Use of ultrasound waves to break up Kidney stones
•Uses acoustic pulse
•Minimal collateral damage
• Sound waves focused exactly at stones
• Non-invasive
•Patient is sedated
BUN
• Stands for Blood Urea Nitrogen
• Blood test for measuring Kidney function
• Measures nitrogen in blood in form of urea
• Urea is secreted by Liver and removed from blood by the kidneys
• Elevated BUN means moderate to sever renal failure
