2. MCC FACILITIES MANAGEMENT STRATEGYAs the stewards of energy and waste controlfor an organization, FM needs to take aleadership role in providing methodologies forreducing energy consumption and by-productsthat harm our environment. SOCIALRESPONSIBILITY is a major underpinning of asound FM strategy. 3. GSHP PROJECT AT MIDDLESEX COMMUNITYCOLLEGE SUMMER/FALL 2012 The geothermal system is actually a ground sourceheat pump (GSHP) and 3500 feet of high-densitypolyethylene (HDPE) piping. The MCC geo system is an example of a closed-loophorizontal system. MCCs geo system consists of 7 wells, each around450 deep in the earth. Project construction took 150 days, beginning at theend of May. The system takes care of all the heating and coolingneeds of the Trustees House. Yearly savings will be around $12,000. 4. A SIMPLE DEFINITION A geothermal heat pump is an electrically powereddevice that uses the natural heat storage ability ofthe earth and/or the earths groundwater to heatand cool. A geothermal heat pump or ground source heatpump (GSHP) is a central heating and/or coolingsystem that pumps heat to or from the ground. It uses the earth as a heat source (in the winter) ora heat sink (in the summer). 5. IT WAS MORE THAN A CONSTRUCTIONPROJECT.. 6. IT WAS A GALVANIZING ACCOMPLISHMENT,BRINGING THE COLLEGE COMMUNITY TOGETHER We save money on heating and cooling Students learn about geothermal technology The college community teaches, learns andreflects on a deep, gripping questionWhat legacy will we leave to Mother Earth? 7. THE GOOD EARTHHOW DO WE ENCULTURALIZE THEDEEP RESPECT FOR NATURE THATOUR NATIVE AMERICAN BRETHRENEMBRACE?
