MATTER
•What is Matter?
•What are the Parts of an Atom?
• How do you Read the Periodic Table of Elements?
MATTERAnything that has Mass and Takes up Space
EX.: TABLE, WATER, AIR
NOT MATTER: SOUND, LIGHT
Atoms: the Building Blocks of MatterTwo Parts: Nucleus and Electron Cloud
Proton: Found in the Nucleus; Positive Charge
Neutron: Found in the Nucleus; No Charge (Neutral)
Electron: Found in the Electron Cloud; Negative Charge
Element: A Substance made of One Type of Atom; Arranged into the Periodic Table of Elements
Each Different Element has a Different Number of Protons and Electrons. Ex.: Carbon has 6 protons & electrons; Aluminum has 13 protons and electrons

Atomic Number: the number of protons and electrons in an element
Atomic Symbol: written as either 1 capital letter or one capital and one lowercase letter
Atomic Mass: the average mass of the atoms of the element
