The question people almost always ask when they see my sculptures is, «Why do you hybridize living beings with machines?». Most of the time, this makes me in turn question myself, since answers that seem at first simple tend to get more complicated after reflection. It’s true that the aspect of technology which pervades my sculptures borders on the obsessional.
Some simple answers might be, for example, that from an early age I was steeped in the very mechanized world of my father’s job and passions, or that later I had to put my hand to the plough myself, or else that my various professional experiences, where I was trying to find my way in life, have always brought me face to face with machines. I have to admit that all of these things must have had an influence, but that doesn’t suffice to explain the obsession.
It took me a long time to realize that technology has invaded even the tiniest cracks of our existence. The way I blend cogs, pistons, integrated circuits and other accessories of the industrial world into beings, bodies or faces directly follows from the way human life has evolved in recent times. Of course, we are only at the beginning of an era where the use of machines or micromachines embedded within living beings may well become widespread, but it is already the case that modern life is completely unthinkable without technology.
The blending of man with machine seems already taken for granted. Until now, we have managed to evolve at the same rate as technological innovation: the rhythm of the 19th and 20th centuries was slow enough to allow man time to adapt. However, in the last few decades the exponential acceleration of discovery, along with the advent of computers, networks and interconnection, has become very noticeable, and to such an extent that we feel more and more often out of our depth.
My work fits into this disruptive era, when all the limits are constantly being called into question by technology and science. It’s a modest attempt to apprehend by means of concrete shapes the effects of the uncontrolled acceleration of change on our lives and our planet.

I often have this strange and riveting dreamOf a woman unknown, and who I love, and who loves me,And who is, each time, neither quite the sameNor quite another, who loves me, who understands me...
... Her look is like the gaze of statues,And as for her voice, distant, and calm, and deep, it hasthe inflexion of beloved voices which have become silent.

Birth, and by extension the “birth of the world,” is obviously fascinating. Trying to imagine how life appeared on earth is breathtaking in itself, and the difficulty of coming into the world - the complexity of the processes in play - plunges us into absolute abstraction and takes us out to the limits of understanding. In everyday life, we all have images of chubby squealing babies in mind. Those moments of our existence then, so full of renewal, and so also of ending as one generation chases away the other, are very symbolic to us. Inexorably, they remind us of the richness of evolution which has brought about the diversity of life on the planet, present and past, and also they remind us of the fragility of our existence. We amount to very little when we are born, almost nothing when we die, and the short space of time which separates these two events, seen on a cosmic scale, should incite us to be humble.

Accumulating knowledge, deepening our understanding, can be achieved in many ways. Emotion and sensitivity play as important a role in this process as memory or reasoning. Our search for better lucidity about the world around us and about ourselves pushes us to endless questioning, and as well to follow some of the answers suggested by other humans or by our own imagination. Little by little, we add a few touches to the work never achieved that is knowledge, this interior reflection of reality.
