What is Energy? Energy is the capacity to do some type of
work.
![Page 5: Matter and Energy (page 17 of Scientific Notebook)](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649cf75503460f949c7baf/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
What is work?
Moving an object Forming a new compound Generating light Converting food to usable energy
Energy is used when there is any change in matter.
![Page 6: Matter and Energy (page 17 of Scientific Notebook)](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649cf75503460f949c7baf/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
What are the two ways matter can change?
PHYSICAL – no change in substance
CHEMICAL – new substance is made

Matter Changes
In order for anything to change, whether it is chemical or physical energy must be supplied. (Arrow Indicate Energy)

What are endothermic and exothermic processes?
Endothermic- process in which heat is absorbed.
Exothermic- process in which heat is released.

What is the Law of Conservation of Energy?
The Law That States That Energy Cannot Be Created or Destroyed but can be changed from one form to another.
![Page 10: Matter and Energy (page 17 of Scientific Notebook)](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649cf75503460f949c7baf/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Energy can exist in different forms.
Chemical Mechanical Light Heat Electrical sound

What are heat, temperature, and specific heat?
Heat- the energy transferred between objects.
Temperature- actual measurement of energy (heat), or how hot or cold something is.
Specific heat- the relationship between the energy transferred to a substance and the substance’s temperature change.
![Page 14: Matter and Energy (page 17 of Scientific Notebook)](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649cf75503460f949c7baf/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
What are temperature scales?
Thermometers are used to measure temperature.
Thermometers are marked with different temperature scales.
3 basic types: Kelvin, Celsius, Fahrenheit
![Page 15: Matter and Energy (page 17 of Scientific Notebook)](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649cf75503460f949c7baf/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Calculations(page 18 of Scientific Notebook)
Converting between temperature scales(K- oC)
t( oC) = T(K) – 273.15 K
t(K) = t( oC) + 273.15 oC
![Page 16: Matter and Energy (page 17 of Scientific Notebook)](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649cf75503460f949c7baf/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Calculations(page 18 of Scientific Notebook)
Converting between temperatures(oF- oC)
t(o C) = (5/9)(oF – 32)
t(oF) = (9/5)(oC + 32)
