WINTER 2015

2015WINTER STUDIOSitting at the southern edge of the

University of Oregon campus in Eugene, the Suzuki Community Music Institute serves as the home a children’s music

school, but is also used by the University’s School of Music. The centerpiece of the school is a spiraling copper-clad recital

hall that serves as a visual beacon for the campus. The eccentricity of the recital hall

is balanced by a rational brick bar that houses the classrooms and presents a

more traditional facade to its off-campus neighbors to the south.

For a roof patio on my Makerspace project, I developed a parametric sun shading device using Grasshopper. The awning is composed of an array

of bike gears with apertures that vary in size to create an incremental shade gradient.

Employed on the building, the awning provides extra shade at the outside edge of the patio where solar exposure is greatest,

while permitting more sun to reach the inside edge, which is shaded by the upper fl oors of

the building in the afternoon.
