Host of NPR’s music program From the Top, O’Riley is recognized as a leading American pianist of his generation. Haimovitz made his solo debut at age 13 with the Israel Philharmonic and has since redefined what it means to be a classical musician, bringing concert performance to clubs and coffee houses around the world. The program will be determined by the audience pre-performance using social media from a “playlist” provided by the artists, featuring classical compositions by Bach and Chopin along with works by Radiohead and Piazzolla.

ChRiSToPheR o’RiLeyFrom his groundbreaking transcriptions of Radiohead, Elliott Smith and Nick Drake to his unforgettably sublime interpretations of the classical canon, pianist Christopher O’Riley has stretched the piano beyond conventional boundaries.

His first recording of Radiohead’s transcriptions, True Love Waits received four stars from Rolling Stone and was as critically acclaimed as it was commercially successful. His Hold Me to This: Christopher O’Riley plays the music of Radiohead followed suit. Tackling the deeply emotional and complex work from the troubled singer/songwriter Elliott Smith, Home to Oblivion: An Elliott Smith Tribute, drew critical praise from both classical and pop music critics. O’Riley’s fourth set of transcriptions from the contemporary popular songbook, Second Grace – The Music of Nick Drake, was a collection of repertoire written and originally recorded by the late enigmatic British guitar wizard and songwriter.

O’Riley has taken his unique vision to both traditional classical music venues and symphonic settings, as well as to entirely new audiences on the radio, at universities and even in clubs. As host of the popular classical music radio show, National Public Radio’s From The Top, O’Riley works and performs with the next generation of brilliant young musicians, demonstrating to audiences that these young artists are as interesting and diverse in their personal lives as they are in their music-making. Two years ago, PBS launched the weekly television series From the Top from Carnegie Hall featuring O’Riley as host, directed by Emmy-winning Director Gary Halvorson.

O’Riley has toured the U.S. with the world-famous Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Orchestra. He has appeared with the philharmonic orchestras of Los Angeles, New York, Moscow and the Royal Philharmonic in London; the Minnesota Orchestra; and the symphonies of Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Baltimore, Philadelphia and San Francisco. The illustrious group of conductors with whom he has collaborated includes Michael Tilson Thomas, Semyon Bychkov, JoAnn Falletta, Krystof Penderecki, Kurt Mazur, James Gaffigan, Vassily Sinaisky, Christopher Hogwood, Roger Norrington and Leonard Bernstein.

From early in his career, O’Riley was honored with many awards at the Leeds, Van Cliburn, Busoni and Montreal competitions, as well as an Avery Fisher Career Grant. O’Riley studied with Russell Sherman at the New England Conservatory of Music. O’Riley makes his home in Cleveland, Ohio. From the Top can be found online at www.fromthetop.org.

MaTT haiMoviTzRenowned as a musical pioneer, cellist Matt Haimovitz has inspired classical music lovers and countless new listeners by bringing his artistry to concert halls and clubs, outdoor festivals, intimate coffee houses and any place where passionate music can be heard. He brings a fresh ear to familiar repertoire, champions new music and initi-ates groundbreaking collaborations, all while mentoring an award-winning studio of young cellists at McGill Univer-sity’s Schulich School of Music in Montreal.

Haimovitz made his debut in 1984, at the age of 13, as a soloist with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic. At 17, he made his first recording for Deutsche Grammophon (Universal Classics) with James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Haimovitz made his Carnegie Hall debut when he substituted for his teacher, the legendary Leonard Rose, in Schubert’s String Quartet.

Haimovitz’s recording career encompasses more than 20 years of award-winning work on Deutche Grammophon and his own Oxingale Records. His recent release Meeting of the Spirits was nominated for a GRAMMY® for Best Classical Crossover Album and won a GRAMMY® for Best Producer of the Year (Classical). A new recording with pianist Christopher O’Riley, Shuffle.Play.Listen, blurring the boundaries between classical and pop was recently released.

The solo cello recital is a Haimovitz trademark, both inside and outside the concert hall. In 2000, he made waves with his Bach “Listening-Room” Tour, for which, to great acclaim, Haimovitz took Bach’s beloved cello suites out of the concert hall and into clubs. He was the first classical artist to play at New York’s infamous CBGB club, in a performance filmed by ABC News for Nightline UpClose.

In 1996, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University. Haimovitz plays a Venetian cello, made in 1710 by Matteo Gofriller.
