Another year has flown by. The KCOB community has enjoyed a successful year of celebration and fellowship, from Founders Weekend to branch dinners and class reunion get-togethers. Our main aim is to ensure all old boys enjoy the many different opportunities to meet, reports KCOB President Lawrence Polklinghorne.

On behalf of all in our network we extend warm congratulations and special thanks to Kearsney

Headmaster, Elwyn van den Aardweg and his entire team for the excellent results in 2012 which are featured on pages 9 and 10.

The KCOB office is working hard at developing a comprehensive database that allows regular contact and updates. While this has improved communications, we continue to strive to keep up with social media developments and to keep both ends of our age groups in touch.

Strategic initiatives this year include building capacity in the KCOB office. We are recognised as being by far the most organised and “successful” old boys network - due to tireless back office support and structures. We recognise the service requirements and strive to ensure we match expectations.

Always key to the success and sustainability of our school is available funding. KCOB, through special initiatives, is focused on assisting the Foundation to realise Centenary fund raising plans and targets. It is our intention to remain aligned with the school and the Board’s strategic direction. Our core focus this year is to encourage monthly annuity donations to build a long term sustainable endowment.

We look forward to a busy year. It goes without saying that I am extremely grateful to the Executive and the KCOB team that make this all possible. It is a privilege to be associated with the KCOB and we assure you of our best efforts. The school community is only as good as it is because of all of your support and efforts. Old boys, parents, ambassadors, teachers and friends of the College - we salute you and thank you for your contribution.

Dr Jonathan Pons

KCOB and ophthalmologist Dr Jonathan Pons heads up the Good Shepherd Hospital Eye Care Project in Swaziland where sight is restored to about 1000 patients each year.

Vision In Africa

The commitment of those working at the clinic ensures that every person is attended to on the day they visit. No-

one is turned away – not for lack of money or because the staff are too busy.

Jonathan says budget restraints have led to improved efficiency and productivity and at times a dual theatre is run with a microscope between two beds. On busy days he can perform up to 30 cataract operations.

The Finningley old boy matriculated in 1980 and is a current parent, with sons Timothy matriculating this year and Daniel in 2014.

The Project is partly funded by CBM, an international charity which reaches about 16 000 people annually within Swaziland.

“The cost for surgery is R600 but we don’t turn anyone away. We have three clinic days and two operating days a week and, as a rule, we have no waiting lists and arrange sponsorship for surgery as needed.

The financial crisis in Swaziland allow us only two eye-care nurses and three general nurses. Out of necessity we’ve had to improve efficiency. We perform surgery on two patients at a time. It has almost tripled our productivity,” he said.

Jonathan also trains doctors, including South Africans, in cataract surgery. Many communities throughout Africa - from the Cameroons to Madagascar and the Eastern Cape - owe their sight to specialists trained by Jonathan.

Notable Alumni

Leading Canadian businessman Tony Melman (KCOB 1964) has founded an international firm offering business advice to CEOs and their management teams.

As a veteran private equity player, Tony is a founding partner of Acasta Capital, which offers objective advice to North American and international business leaders - ranging from investment banking, financial affairs and government affairs, to corporate strategy and investor relations. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of Mount Sinai Hospital and Chairs the Childhood Cancer Charitable Council of the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO).

Nick Sloane (KCOB 1978) has been appointed senior salvage master for the Costa Concordia, which ran aground off Tuscany in January 2012, killing 32 people. Costing $387-million, the salvage operation will involve raising the luxury liner to an upright position, before being towed to a mainland harbour – a feat never attempted before with a vessel of this size. The Concordia is 20m long and 36m wide.

Nick is considered one of the world’s best when it comes to cleaning up marine disasters, raising sunken oil rigs and cutting up ships. “It is certainly the biggest challenge ever in salvage and with 16 nationalities on location, I use the spirit of Ubuntu to assist parties in respecting and understanding others’ cultural backgrounds,” Nick said.

History was made this year when two KCOBs - centre Brad Barritt (2004) and prop Matt Stevens (2001) - were selected for the England squad to play in the Six Nations against Scotland at Murrayfield. Brad returned to SA mid-year to play for England in the PE test.

Brad played KC 1st team rugby for two years, was captain in his matric year, and also played 1st team cricket; as well as being head of Pembroke and achieving five distinctions in matric.

Matt remains the most capped Kearsney player, having played in the 1st XV for four seasons, as captain in 2000 and 2001. He was also being head of Sheffield and head of the Choir.

Two KCOBs, both from the Class of 2004, represented South Africa at the Olympic Games in London during July.

Lloyd Madsen was part of the men’s hockey team and Troyden Prinsloo placed twelfth in the 10km marathon open water swim. He also swam in the Beijing Olympics.

The SA U19 cricket team, captained by Chad Bowes (KCOB 2010), reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Australia during July and August this year. Chad’s scores were 18 vs Bangladesh; 115 vs Namibia; 46 vs Sri Lanka; 46 vs England and 46 vs Australia.

Going Green

eKCo-KearsneyDeep in the

Himalayas over Easter this year,

whilst leading a group of boys and their families, Headmaster Elwyn van den Aardweg and his deputy Rod de Villiers contemplated the Earth and its future.

Perhaps it was the altitude and scarcity of oxygen or the sub-zero temperatures but during the three week trek to Base Camp and then back to Gorak Shep along the Kumbu Glacier, preservation of the planet – and Kearsney College - preoccupied their thoughts.

On their return, Rod researched sustainable and environmentally-friendly aspects which could be introduced at Kearsney; put forward a proposal and established the school’s Sustainability Committee,

named eKCo-Kearsney, which, in the space of a few months, already has a five-year framework plan in motion.

A borehole has been dug close to the Greyhound, the swimming pools have covers to maintain temperatures, a paper re-cycling project is in place and sewerage is being recycled for watering of the gardens and fields. This is in addition to replacing globes with LED bulbs, on-off tap switches to reduce water consumption and the kitchen sourcing local food purchases and re-cycling old oil.

Campus manager Andrew Bretherton and his team are currently investigating the possibility of having a rainwater tank installed for run-off from the

SportZone; as well as the installation of water and electricity meters in all the Houses, with regular prizes for the most conservation-efficient house.

Invader plants now face a limited lifespan at Kearsney, with their planned replacement with indigenous plants.

The greatest indication of the school’s seriousness about ‘going green’ is the concept of installing a wind turbine close to the entrance in Old Main Road, which could at least generate sufficient energy for the guard house.

“We are a leading school in so many areas. Now we are extending this to focus on environmentally-friendly, renewable and sustainable issues on campus,” Rod said.

Old boys lead on GreenConservation at Kearsney started with old boy support in the 1980s when land was gifted by Professor David Hall (1952) for this purpose. Strengthening this initiative, David’s brother Michael Hall (1953) has started an endowed green fund. The intention is to see this fund grow to address growing needs in this area. David, who was an influential environmentalist and forerunner in research on alternative energy, was a Professor at the University of London. Prof Michael Hall (1953) works at the UCLA Medical Center and will travel with his wife Jill from California to attend his 60th reunion at Kearsney College in 2013.

Water Treatment PlantKearsney is grateful to Transnet for its donation of a temporary sewerage plant.

“On our hike in the Himalayas we witnessed the impact of climate change, the stark evidence of the melting glaciers and the vulnerability of this extreme environment. The Sherpas and Nepalese showed us low level bridges that had been washed away by the rivers caused by melting 1000-year-old ice and monsoon rains. New bridges, hundreds of meters high, span massive canyons created by the shrinking glaciers. In South Africa, the visual effects of climate change are not as in-your-face. The trip to Everest has certainly inspired a more pro-active response to the challenges of our fragile earth.”

Last year Craig McDougall and Rob Lockhart-Ross initiated the Kearsney Ambassador forum, that ensures that former KC parents, grandparents, sponsors and guardians are kept informed about developments at the school.

The forum will always be chaired by the father of the previous year’s head boy. Effectively Craig has now handed over to Haydn Kelly for 2013. David Attenborough (KCOB 1974) joins the team now and will chair the Ambassadors during 2014.

South African investment and management company Invicta Holdings sponsored a full five-year boarding and tuition bursary for the first time this year as part of its extensive CSI programme, which includes building two Grade R crèches annually.

Manzini Zungu wishes Kearsney’s first Invicta Bursary recipient Sibuso (Boetie) Hadebe well for his grade 8 final exams The Kearsney bursary went to talented grade 8 student, Sibuso (Boetie) Hadebe, who

has excelled to the extent that Invicta is offering a further bursary for 2013. The company hopes to track the recipients’ progress and, where possible, to finance their

tertiary studies and assist with future employment opportunities.

The company’s involvement was inspired by the happy school life and opportunities that are possible at Kearsney. The school provides boys with the skills and knowledge to build a career and cope with the challenges of competing in an academic university and work arena.

To honour their deceased classmates, the Class of 2007 strive to remind us to live with passion, celebrate those we love, embrace life and make the world a better place.

Head Prefect Monde Nkosi recalls seeing much change in that year. The campus was referred to as a construction site - the kitchen and dining facilities were totally renovated and the hungry army of boys were fed in what became the SportZone; the new Science Centre opened; a new classroom block built and wireless connectivity was installed.

A legacy for the future

Manfred and Susan Rohwer, together with the Class of 2007’s family and friends, established the Class of 2007 Memorial Fund in memory of their son Stefan, his classmate Ifenyi (Ifi) Okafor, who suffered from a rare blood disorder (sickle cell anaemia) and died in matric and recently, Santhan Govender.

The Fund honours these young men by providing the opportunity for a talented student, who would not otherwise have been able to afford it, to experience Kearsney.

At the start of 2012, the 5th Anniversary of the Class of 2007, the endowment fund reached a capital value of R400 000.

“The harder the conflict the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress and grow brave by reflection.” Thomas Paine

Stefan Rohwer 15 April 1989 - 8 March 2009Pembroke 2003-2007

Cricket was Stef ’s first love and he excelled at golf, tennis, running, rugby, hockey and soccer. He cycled the Amashova from Pietermaritzburg to Durban nine times. Stef was excited about his studies in Quantity Surveying & Property Development at the Durban University of Technology. Sadly, he died in a motor accident on Sunday 8 March 2009.

Ifeanyi (Ifi) Okafor 12 October 1989 - 26 August 2007Pembroke 2003-2007

Ifi was a true Kearsney boy. His death deeply affected his classmates and friends remember his smile and ever supportive nature. Housemaster Barend Steyn said Ifi was a model student, who embraced the values of Pembroke: scholarship, fellowship and sportsmanship. He accepted his circumstances and insisted on not being treated as any other boy.

Santhan Govender 22 August 1989 - 11 July 2012 Sheffield 2003 - 2007

Santhan was the Dux scholar in 2007, having achieved Academic Honours Cum Laude. Tragically, he died of leukaemia earlier this year. His peers remember him as intelligent and determined, yet humble, gracious and grounded. He carried his positive attitude to the end, never asking for special attention.

TRIBUTES

Allan Lennox Batchelor (Gillingham1966) Allan’s brother Garth (1965) provided a wonderful tribute of the life and adventures of his brother Allan who cared for the planet and those he loved. “In 2010 Allan had a heart attack while paddling down the Crocodile River. This left permanent heart damage but he continued his life in his own positive, jovial way always ready to try something new” including his first skydive with his daughter Claire in 2011.

Lloyd Edy (Pembroke1998)Lloyd (left), pictured with his brother Dylan (2000), Lloyd died on 25 August after a long suffering illness.

Alan McCabe’s (1998) tribute is online and he writes. “He always radiated an air of non-judgment and an open heart to anyone who interacted with him. He had a massive heart! From the entire class of 1998, you will be missed Lloyd.”

Donald McGibbon (Gillingham 1971)Hugh McGibbon (1967), Donald’s brother, shares how he departed our shores for Melbourne, Australia in the 1980s and returned to South Africa in 2002.

Kearsney were happy days. Donald was deputy head prefect and played cricket for the 1st XI in 1970 and 1971 and went on to qualify top of his year with a BSc Building Science at Wits. “We must be thankful Don went peacefully when he suffered a sudden heart attack.”

Witnessing reunions of classmates and sharing memories is an honour. It was also a ‘coming of age’ to see the KCOB Passion in Action with many old boys pledging to ensure a bright future for Kearsney. Just over 50 men joined as ‘Founders of Kearsney’s 2nd Century’ giving monthly to support sport or academic’s and build Kearsney’s endowment.

Golf day goes to 1997! Splendid weather greeted a full field at Cotswold Down. The day was won by 15-year reunion revellers with a score of 87 points. Well done: Gareth Collingwood (Finningley 97), Lewis Martin (Gillingham 97), Darren Clark (Pembroke 97) and Simon Stockil (Finningley 97).

All Survivors are welcome with honours going to the 50th and 60th reunion men. Pat Marshall’s (1952) and Humphrey Tedder’s (1962) speeches at Friday’s Founders Assembly are online.

345@Dinner We had 345 old boys celebrating Kearsney at the formal dinner.(331 attended the dinner in 2011). There were three Fiver reunion attendance records in 2012: The Class of 1997 (15th reunion), 1987 (25th Reunion) and 1967 (45th Reunion) had 26, 50 and 19 men respectively at the formal dinner.

60th Reunion There are 19 surviving men of the class of 1952 and incredibly all are in contact with each other and 10 attended the dinner. A standing ovation

was given to Pat Marshall and his year for this amazing effort. Their solidarity is a shared ‘cause’. Prof David Hall inspired the start of a fund for boys to attend Kearsney. At their 60th was a 2007 recipient celebrating his 5th reunion.

Results from the sports fixtures against Westville impressed at every level. The 1st XV won 20 – 3 and all were invited to circle on the Stott and sing Shoshaloza.

Post-match function Spectators either dashed to their cars to sit in a long queue to get to the England v Springbok game at the Shark Tank or went to the Greyhound to catch the action on the big screen.

Founders 2O13 The Three’s and Eight’s celebrate reunions in 2013 on 14-15 June 2013. Booking online is open.
