From the Principal Ms Jane Stanley, Relieving Principal

Welcome back to another new year. Ms Walker is on leave from the 12th of February until the 4th of April.

I will be Relieving Principal until her return.

We hope she has a restful break and look forward to her return later in the term.

New Head Teacher Technology

I am also pleased to announce that Ms Kamilla Little has been appointed to the Head Teacher TAS role in the school.

Ms Little taught at Matraville Sports High School in 2016 and is extremely happy to be back here in the Head teacher

role. Ms Little is a talented educator and we welcome her back to the school and to the executive team.

Individual Plans for Every Student

Later this term we will be holding our second Goal Setting Evening, supported by Westpac. We invite all families to

attend the event with all students in the school required again this year to set individual goals, and every student will

have an individual learning plan. During Semester 2 the event will be repeated, giving students a chance to reflect on

their progress. This approach adds to our UNSW partnership programs, as tutors and support staff can find out the

needs and hopes of all students and include collective goals in their planning.

AVID 2018

Advancement via Individual Determination is starting its third year at Matraville Sports High School. Please Google AVID

Australia (education program) to find out more. AVID builds post-secondary skills for university and TAFE from Year 7

onward. It focuses on organisation, critical reading, and collaborative learning skills. We are the only Sydney High

School currently implementing AVID, as have many schools in regional NSW, Melbourne, regional Victoria, and South

Australia.

School Planning Meeting

All parents /carers are invited to consult and give feedback/input into the 2018-2020 School Management Plan. I would

really appreciate any parent contribution. The meeting is being held on Thursday 22 March at 3.30pm. There will be an

afternoon tea. Please RSVP for catering purposes on 9661 8000. I would like to encourage our community members to

attend this valuable process – have your say in shaping the School Plan.

Support Faculty update

New Additions

The Support Unit at Matraville Sports High School has grown again this year! All of our staff and students would like to

extend a warm welcome to our new year 7 students and to all of our new students in S5 (our 6th class). We are also

excited to welcome our newest teachers- Mr Armson and Ms Armer and SLSOs- Ms Heyward and Ms Taylor to the

team. Everyone has settled in well and we can’t wait for another exciting year!

Year 7 camp

On Monday 26th February students from Year 7 got on a bus and travelled up to the Great Aussie Bush Camp at

Kincumber for their first high school camp. Our young daredevils participated in a range of activities including: climbing

up and jumping off a 12m pole, water obstacle courses, rock-climbing and night-time commando games - just to name a

few.

The attitude and behaviour of our students was exceptional. All of our students had a go at conquering their fears and

supported each other in leaving their comfort zone, surviving bouts of homesickness, and getting to sleep after the

camp staff’s scary stories.

A special congratulations to Juwarn, Aidan, Learna and Mikeyah for apparently being the first team to complete the

survivor challenge (whilst staying dry) in over six months!

A big thank you to Mr Ferreira, Ms Li and Ms Heyward for accompanying us and helping us to create memories and

friendships that will hopefully last for a lifetime.

Art Update

A massive congratulations to Brandon Iskander – chosen for the 2017 HSC Art Express Exhibition!

This thoughtful artowrk “Displaced explores the struggle of people living on the margins. These marginal spaces are

occupied by global refugees, victims of war and the homeless. The generic plastic luggage bags stuffed to capacity draw

attention to the volume and disposable nature of these outcasts and the lack of compassion to accommodate them. The

raw materiality, ripping and stitching further highlight the distressed and broken spirit of the exiled. The horrific events

of Manus Island, the eviction of the homeless from Martin Place and the European refugee crisis in particular inform his

work. This is a huge win for Brandon as Art Express is a truly prestigous exhibition.

Congratulation also goes to Kayla Bennet First Prize in the Randwick City Council International Women’s Day Art Prize.

Kayla’s art is being exhibited until the 29 April ~ beautiful work Kayla

Aspire

As part of the ASPIRE Advantage program at the UNSW, we are encouraging ALL Indigenous students from Years 10 &

11 in ASPIRE partner schools to submit a quality application to attend the 2018 Nura Gili Winter School. Acceptance to

this long running program is very competitive and in 2018 numbers are limited to only 100 students. One of our key

objectives is to lift the ASPIRE participating numbers by actively supporting students to prepare very comprehensive

and competitive applications.

From the Counsellor

Mrs Julia Krattli

This year, Matraville Sports High School will be taking part in a research study for student wellbeing. This voluntary study

is being run by the Black Dog Institute, University of New South Wales. As part of this study, students in Years 8, 9 and 11

will be invited to answer some questions about their mental health in class time on a private computer. Participation is

entirely voluntary. Students will then be given access to an online program developed by the Black Dog Institute called

Smooth Sailing. This program provides information and activities to help students cope with worry, stress, and feelings

of sadness. Students can use Smooth Sailing in their own time for up to 12-weeks. After using the program for 6-weeks

and then 12-weeks, students will be asked to answer questions again. This will help the researchers determine whether

the program has been helpful. All students’ answers remain confidential and will be stored only at the Black Dog Institute.

If a student reports that they are experiencing severe depression or thoughts of suicide during the study, they will be

immediately referred to the school counsellor who will then follow usual school protocols. This study will help us to

ensure students are being cared for. For more information about this study, visit:

Canteen News

The canteen tender process is currently being finalised and a new licensee should be in place towards the end of this

Term, or at the commencement of Term 2.

The students and staff would like to extend their thanks to Poppy’s Place Café at Matraville for providing us with a healthy

and tasty interim menu – they have really helped us out and their chicken schnitzel sandwich will be missed! Thank you

again Poppy’s Place for the wonderful service.
