Wii’s Revolution is in the Past By Ian Bogost
» Discussion by Michele and Rhys
Does physicality increase the presence of reality in gaming?
(Importance of the button press)
• Waggle Vs. Button press– Does waggle make a game less immersive, by making the
player conscious of his/her actions?
e.g. sword swing in Twilight Princess
-Does the contrast between buttons and gestures, remove the immersive properties of motion?
-Can the game tell the same story, with or without buttons? Is motion always better?
The Wii and serious games
• Wii Sports and Wii fit, – Is Wii fit a serious game? What is a serious game?
– Are these games unrewarding?
– Compare a health game like Wiisports to a “serious” title on another system
– Are they too shallow? Is that important?
Graphics vs. Motion
• Graphics have hit saturation – Can games continue to rely on graphics as a selling point?
– Will game developers have to adopt physicality in the future?
– Ideally would a game be graphical and physical?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6uqpggUing

Is expressive innovation warranted in gaming?
• games should be fun– Does narrative distract from simple enjoyment?
– “interface innovation does not lead automatically to expressive innovation.”
