ith flag raising come and gone in late April, the boating season is upon us and our summer agenda

at the Club is picking up steam. May activities were all worthy of mention

from Derby Day to Mothers Day to finally our Memorial Day pool party and picnic. While there were no winners for the Derby Day pot, the club made a handsome $460 which will be applied to the house improvement fund.

As we move into June, on June 1st our summer food service begins with Saturday lunches and dinners. Our kitchen staff is working on a special menu for Saturday lunches so watch email announcements for further details. Saturday evenings will feature “off -the-grill” menus with Candlelight dinners interspersed from time to time. Again, please watch your weekly emails for further details and menus.

On June 8 we will have another Saturday Dance Night. On that night, we will have an “off-the- grill” menu followed by dancing. This Saturday dance night will feature shag dancing. If you don’t know how to shag, come and learn. We will have two couples from the Kilmarnock Shag Club here to give a brief demonstration of shagging. Come for a night of good food and then have a great night on the dance floor. For this special event, jeans will be permitted in the Club House.

Later in the month, on Sunday, June 16 we will host a Fathers Day picnic and a Candlelight dinner on the 22. Please mark you calendar now as you don’t want to miss any of these popular events.

As mentioned in my previous column, we are working on adding some new wines to our inventory. While this effort continues, we do need to reduce our inventory of existing wines before adding something different. Watch the shelf behind the bar and consider buying a bottle or two from the club rather than bringing wine from home.

he month of May was chocked full of events such as Cinco de Mayo, the Kentucky Derby Day,

Mother’s Day Brunch, Club Night, Candlelight Dinner, and Memorial Day Picnic. Not to mention all of the events going on in the town of Mathews. What a way to start off the summer.

The club is looking beautiful with all the flowers and shrubs blooming. Please keep in mind that in order to keep the grounds looking beautiful, the landscaping committee will need to lend a hand in taking care of the weeds, etc.

The pool cover is off in anticipation of the opening of the pool on Memorial Day. There are four new tables with matching chairs and four new umbrellas to add a little color to the area.

The beer cooler stopped working and with the help of Adam and Dan Reno it was removed in anticipation of the arrival of the new cooler. Unfortunately, the vendor did not deliver the new cooler the same afternoon.

New paper towel dispensers and toilet paper holders were installed in the men’s and ladies’ rooms. Just to avoid confusion, the new paper towel dispensers are manual and not automatic like the old ones.

All contract electrical work has finally been completed on “C” Dock. Take a look at night and see how well the new pedestals light up the walkway. It’s a beautiful sight.

Enjoy the beginning of your summer and boating season. I hope to see you at the club and on the water!

If we have a few that want to go, we will add Saturday to the schedule. Let me know if you can lead one of the sessions.

• YMCA Youth Sailing school will start June 17 (Monday). This program will include six (6) weeklong classes. The kids will sail sunfish and lasers and leave from the club boat house. A new beach is being added next to the ramp to support small boat sailing and kayaking. Sign up at the Y. Several volunteers are working to renew the boats and grounds; Hank Reichie, Peter Hall, Lyn and Alan Fleming, John Sieg, Lisa and Jay White and others.

• June will be a busy cruising month; Six (6) boats will be in the Norfolk Harborfest Tall ship event the first week of June and then the next cruise will be to Baltimore Maryland for a two-week cruise. Ten (10) boats plan to in this event.

• Several sailboats: Sunfish, sailing dingy, Catalina (a Laser type boat) and Hobie Holden 14, recently were donated to the club. Special thanks to John Mechan, Jr., Hunter Merrill and Jack Rouzie. These boats and other future donated boats will become available for club member use. Call me for details. Maybe we will start racing them on the Creek. See me if interested. And the cruising season is underway.

We completed the Shakedown Cruise to the Fishing Bay Yacht Club. Seven (7) boats made the trip and were hosted by the FBYC Cruising group. The photo below shows both yacht club members present at the cruiser evening party. What a wonderful time.
