Modeling the varied shapes of seashells is an appealing application of several mathematical concepts that are introduced in multi-variable calculus. Dr. Joanna Ellis-Monaghan, a professor in the MathematicsDepartmentatSaintMichael’sCollegein Colchester, Vermont, uses Maple in teaching calculus, algebra, combinatorics, and number theory. In particular, she uses Maple in Calculus III, where her students create seashell models that involve mathematical representations, data analysis and curve-fitting,and3-Dgraphics.

For years, educators have been debating that use of technology in the classroom could radically change not just how we teach our children, but what we teach them, and when.
