Mathematics in Year One
Juliet
Success criteria are …
• To inform you of what we teach
• To share our methods
• To let you know about recent changes in the National Curriculum relating to maths
Juliet
STAT
• STAT is the new Sheffield way of assessing core subjects of Mathematics, Writing, SPAG and Reading.
• The Year 1 Curriculum now has higher expectations and more content and pupils are expected to be consolidating their skills in different contexts, layouts and problems.
• Their progress is now measured in numbered steps rather than Levels.
Claire
Key Skills
• Knowledge and speedy recall of number pairs up to 10 and 20
• Understanding Place Value: the value of each digit in a number
• Understanding and applying the 4 operations of number
• Fractions
• Shape and Space
• Measure – time, length, weight, capacity.

Number Bonds
• Secure knowledge and recall of the number bondsup to 10 and 20 is crucial for quick calculations
2 + 8 = 10 2 + 18 = 20
12 + 8 = 20
8 + 2 = 10 8 + 12 = 2018 + 2 = 20
• These help with calculation and also speed up calculations of two and three digit numbers e.g.
6 + 4 = 10 16 + 4 = 20 26 + 24 = 50 136 + 24 = 160
Claire
Secure Accurate Counting
• In Year 1, children continue to use number lines and begin to use hundred squares – accurate counting on and counting back is crucial for accurate answers.
• It is really important that they have 1-1 correspondence, pointing to each object or number on the number line as they count
• Understanding number lines helps children to use scales

Navigating the 100 Square
• Key vocabulary: column, row, tens, ones, digit, add, subtract, place value …
• Spotting and using patterns in a 100 square
• Navigating efficiently to support calculations involving higher numbers

Maths should be fun!
Ordering numbers to 20
Making a tower bigger/or smaller than 5
Making use of the outdoors
Concrete apparatus to develop accurate counting
Cross curricular links-DT activity developing directional language

MasteryChildren will be practising their mathematical skills in different contexts so ensure they are
secure in their understanding and embedding key concepts. One way is word problems:
I collected 15 shells. My sister didn’t have any so I gave her 4 of mine.
How many shells do I have now?
15 – 4 = ?
Claire
Mastery
• Another way we embed the key concepts such as counting or addition will be to eventually count on/back in their head, starting with the largest number.
• With the children we call this clever counting so they are not relying on concrete apparatus.

Bean Bag bucket challenge!
Score 1 Score 2 Score 3 Score 4
What is the highest score Dan can get?
Find 3 ways to score 6.
Find 3 ways to score 9.
Dan threw 3 beanbags. Each bag went into a bucket. More than one bag can go in a bucket.

What can you do?
• 100 squares (cut up and reassemble, mark multiples 2, 5, 10 and spot patterns) • Number lines (horizontal, vertical)• Money- Use real money in shopping and saving situations• Board games• Dice, Dominoes, Cards• Talk about shapes you see whilst out and about. Use words like bigger, smaller, higher, curved and
flat faces• www.ictgames.com• Blog page• Maths home learning• Make it fun!!!
