Why study mathematics and statistics here?

Mathematics has been part of the fabric of our curriculum since the University of Sydney was founded more than 160 years ago. This tradition continues today, with many of our courses incorporating a strong emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking – vital graduate attributes.

Whether you are intending to major in mathematics and statistics, or another field such as music, neuroscience, commerce, or psychology, our programs will prepare you to deal with the most abstract of concepts.

Check out our sample course plans to get an idea how your degree might look.

You can enrol in any two of the options above, or combine them with studies from another discipline.

If you’re planning to enrol in a science degree at the University of Sydney, it is a prerequisite that you study Mathematics in your Higher School Certificate (HSC) and attain at least a Band 4 (or equivalent). If your intended course requires a strong mathematics background – such as mathematics, statistics, physics, or engineering – we expect you to take HSC Mathematics Extension 1 or Extension 2.

If you’d like to fill in gaps in your mathematical education, you can enrol in a bridging course run by our academics each February.

Student experience

“The unit of study Foundations of Data Science (DATA1001) is a great introduction to the application of statistics in data science, with a focus on the concepts and their application. This approach makes it accessible to students from a wide variety of disciplines, as well as for anyone intending to major in data science.

“The masterclasses not only reinforce the concepts we learn in lecture and labs but demonstrate how the material is applied in different areas, and what the field of data science has to offer.”

Chanel TattlerBachelor of Advanced Computing student

What’s it like studying mathematics and statistics here?

What opportunities are available for talented students?

We offer two exclusive programs to provide experience in aspects of recent research:

− Dalyell Scholars − Mathematics Special Studies

The Dalyell Scholars program is designed for students of exceptional merit. Entry is by invitation (for most Dalyell courses) and based on your ATAR.

As a Dalyell Scholar, you will have greater course flexibility, networking opportunities, and an academic mentor from your interest area.

If you love mathematics and have achieved outstanding results in Mathematics Extension 2, you may be invited to join the Mathematical Special Studies program. This is a great way to meet other students of similar ability and challenge yourself to achieve at a higher level.

Student experience

“The Dalyell maths showcase gave me a snapshot into the intriguing yet complex field of pure mathematics. I have had the opportunity to develop and extend my scientific skills in both an independent and collaborative manner. It has been a genuine privilege to learn from some great academics at such an early stage in my tertiary studies, an experience that will serve me well in the years to come.”

Where can your degree take you?

According to multiple reports*, 75 percent of future job will require STEM skills. Mathematics graduates are already in massive demand across nearly every industry, from financial services and information technology to scientific, medical, technological and industrial research.

Statisticians and mathematicians are employed by major corporations and in the public sector, as their skills are essential for decision making and policy planning. Secondary school mathematics teaching is another high demand area, as is data science.

Even in areas where specific mathematical knowledge is not directly relevant, mathematics and statistics graduates are highly valued by employers for their mental discipline and thoroughness.

If you are interested in becoming an actuary after graduating, you can seek accreditation from the Actuaries Institute.

* Including reports by PwC and the Australian Government’s Office of the Chief Scientist
