You probably know that you can learn a lot by reading the newspaper. You can learn about what’s going on in the world and about things youcan do for fun. But did you know that you could also use your newspaper to learn math? You can. The newspaper is filled with lots of numbersand math concepts. You can learn math from all parts of the newspaper. That’s what this special newspaper section is all about – learning mathusing the everyday information in your newspaper. In it, you will see how you can learn math from different parts of the newspaper. You’ll alsosee the national math standards that you will learn as you do the activities. Then you can be a real math star in the news!

S p o o n s o f I r o n Explorers Lewis and Clark headed west across theUnited States. They were on a mission for President Thomas Jefferson, who wanted to find aroute to the Pacific Ocean and to expand America. It was 1803, and if you had read a newspa-per at the time, you probably would have learned that the explorers had to take all the sup-plies they would need because there would not be stores in which they could shop as theytraveled. Imagine that they took 32 iron spoons with them for cooking and eating. The spoons came packed 8 in a carton. How many cartons did they load into the wagon for the journey? In this box, show the equation you used to find the answer. Then find five things in the newspaper that youcould buy to take with you on a long trip. Figure out your total cost.

Supposedly, Betsy Ross’s idea of a five-pointed star won over George Washington’s six-pointedstar because she wowed audiences with her ability to createa five-pointed star by making only one cut into a foldedpiece of paper. Have you ever thought about being a photojournalist? Thatis the person who takes the pictures that are in the newspa-per. There are certainly lots of pictures needed every day somaybe it would be a good job. Look through the first fewpages of the newspaper to check out about how many pho-tos are on each page. Then estimate the number of photosin the entire newspaper. After you guess, then count all ofthe photos to see how well you estimated the total.

Guess My Area

You know that you can find the area of a rectangle by multiplying thelength by the width. The area is then measured in square units. Forexample, if a newspaper photo was four inches high by three incheswide, the area would be 4x3=12 square inches. Using that formula,choose four photos from the newspaper. Estimate the length, widthand area of each one. Then use a ruler to measure exactly and com-pute the area. How close were your estimates? Did you usually esti-mate larger or smaller than the actual measurement? Why do youthink that is so?

A decade is 10 years, a century is 100 years, and a millennium is 1,000 years. Investigate how these timeperiods got their names. Decide on a logical name for a period of 10,000 years. Weather Wise?

Look out the window and observe the weather.Write in your journal what you see: snow, rain,or clouds? When you get home, share your journal with someone in your family. Together,watch the weather report on the news. Observehow many math words and symbols the weather-person uses. Record these words and symbols inyour journal. Then see how many of those samewords you can find in the newspaper weatherreport.

Look at the weather map in the news-paper and choose a place that youwould like to visit because it hasgood weather. What if you had to walk to get there? How longwould it take? Research to findout the number of miles to yourchosen location. Imagine that youwalk a mile in 11 minutes and usethat amount of time to make anestimate.

Once in a Blue Moon

The term blue moon describes the second fullmoon in a calendar month. A full moon occursabout every 29.5 days. Blue moons are uncom-mon and usually occur about every 2.5 years.Check the weather page to find out when thenext full moon happens. Then work with a part-ner to determine the month and the year whenwe will have another blue moon. Check thenewspaper weather page to find other informa-tion about the moon. Write a word problemabout the moon based on what you found.

If your newspaper gives you information aboutthe time of sunrise and sunset, usually found on the weather page, figure out exactly howmany hours and minutes of daylight there will be today.

With a partner, take turns making body clocks to show the times thatdifferent shows begin. See whether yourfriend can guess the program whose time you are showing.

Do this activity with a partner. While you are looking at theprices of cars pictured in the Automobile section of the news-paper, make up riddles to test your partner’s place-value know-ledge. Write a riddle about one of the car prices and decide howmany ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands you will use to writeyour riddle. Tell your partner a riddle and give him a chance toguess which car you chose. For example, if your car has a priceof $23,460, your riddle might be, “I have a 6 in the tens placeand I am greater than 20,000. Which car am I?” Write one ofyour riddles on these lines.
