MATERNITY CARE AND DELIVERY
INTRODUCTIONThe word maternity is defined as the
state of being a mother.Generally 3 types of services provided
during maternity care: antepartum care, delivery, postpartum care.
Pregnancy conformation during a problem oriented or preventive visit is not considered as a part of antenatal care and should be reported using appropriate E/M service codes
ANTEPARTUM CAREIt includes initial prenatal history
and physical examination.Montly visit upto 28 weeks(7
visits)Monthly twice visit upto 36
weeks(4 visits)Weekly visits until deliveryOther visits during this period is
reported separately
DELIVERYIt includes admission to the
hospital, history, physical examination,management of uncomplicated labor,vaginal delivery or cesrean delivery.
Two types of delivery 1. Normal delivery 2. cesarean delivery.
Medical complications of pregnancy and medical problems complicating labor and delivery management may need to report separately.
Only delivery services reported using (59409,59514,59612,59620)
Post delivery, and discharge services are reported using E/M services.
POSTPARTUM CAREUpto 6 weeks it considered as
postpartum care.Only postpartum services
reported using 59430 including office or other op visit following vaginal or cesarean section delivery.
Surgical complications of pregnacy reported from surgery section.
If only antepartum or postpartum care is provided except delivery reported using 59425,59426,and 59430.
