INTRODUCTION
•Problem -Food waste Focus - supermarkets
•Short facts: • Half of our total food worldwide is wasted • USA – $2300 worth of food wasted by each supermarket
each day• Tesco – 30 000 tones of food waste per half a year• HONG KONG: 800 tones of food disposal daily by
commercial and industrial sectors
CAUSES OF FAILURE
• Cost of management of such system usually outweighs its benefits
• Businesses get nothing in return no incentive
• Higher costs to firms
PROPOSAL
• System, which aims to reduce the food waste by food supermarkets, where all parties (entrepreneurs, government and population) appear in a win- win position.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
• Supermarket with their waste “special canteens”
Consumers:• People on benefits – eat free
• Others – minimal payment (determined later) to cover transportation/energy costs
WORKERS
• 3 potential groups of employees:
• Convicts of small crimes that would be serving the food, washing dishes etc. in this canteen instead of their social work
• Anyone (but most likely to be poor people)- can eat there for free plus take food packages to their homes
• Unemployed people- make it mandatory at least few times per moth (depends on unemployment rate) in order to be applicable to get unemployment benefit
WHAT’S THE POINT?
Benefits for businesses• less tax
Lower costsenables higher profits
• Businesses engaged in this program define themselves as eco friendly and showing support for poor people
Admiration from consumersBrand loyaltyHigher sales
BENEFITS TO GOVERNMENT
• Should not affect government spendings
• Less people are starving LQI should rise
• Less budget could be allocated on unemployment benefits and for support of poor people, as they can get their meals there for free.
• Lower rate of landfilling
• If this does affect government spending (due to difficult management), system could be handed to some charity organization, which would ensure that it functions properly.
