Become the Exception

Love the one you are withMike Marchev

Strategy #1: Say “thank-you” to your good clients. Presumably, you have a few good clients who are currently “buying your act.” They appreciate what you have done for them, and at times they can be heard singing your praise to their friends.

I want you to contact five of these people to “thank them.” How easy is that? I want you to say “thank-you” to five of your “buds” for supporting your eating habits.

Don’t make this hard. Pick five customers who already know you, like you and trust you. You can contact them in any one of a number of ways. All you want to do is tell them how much you appreciate them. I want you to conjure up the courage to say “thank-you.” (This simple task should not be confused with having a root canal.)

You can use the phone. You can use email. It could be a heart-felt hand-written note. (Best idea.)

Just acknowledge five people. I hope you have more than five, but to get you off the dime, five is all that is required right now. You probably have closer to 50 or

even 200. But to get the machine rolling I just want you to pick five now. (That is less than half a dozen.)

After you see how effective (and easy) this exercise is, I want you to call another five people to ask them for help. People like to help people. You are going to ask them to introduce you to somebody in their world who might also benefit from the high quality service you provide.

Call five to give thanks. Call five to ask for help in the form of a referral. This is as close to “magic” as I get. You’re going to see some unbelievable things pop up before your eyes in very short order.

The human barrier standing between you and this magic is a popular behavior pattern known as procrastination. (The Big “P.”) Along with credit card debt, procrastination is a killer. The Big “P” enters the picture, bogs down our progress, and screws up our lives. Don’t allow procrastination to get in your way. Do what I suggest. Contact your peeps sooner rather than later. Pretend you are in an old John Wayne movie. Bite the bullet and just do it.

If by chance one of your customers hang up the phone on you, don’t take it personally. You just happened to hit them on a bad hair day. Let them hang up. Think of yourself as being bulletproof. You couldn’t care less. You’re calling to say thank you. You’re calling to ask for help. There is no shame in that. Do as I suggest and it will work wonders for you.

Flight Systems Industrial Products President celebrates 30 years of service

Th is year marks Barry Bow-man’s 30th year with Flight Systems Industrial Products (FSIP). Barry joined the Flight Systems Inc. team in 1985 as an electronics drafts-man and then grew into the role of Drafting Manager. Barry also spent time as a Customer Service Repre-sentative and then moved into the operations side of the business as the Production Manager of a specialized line for the company. After a run as

the Plant Manager, Barry became the Industrial Products Manager, where he was overseeing the Industrial Products Division.

In 1996, when the owners decided to sell the Industrial Products Division, Barry was hand selected to lead the charge but was slated to return to Flight Systems Inc. after a successful integration. In fact, the transition was so successful that Barry was off ered the chance to stay on at the newly formed company, Flight Systems Industrial Products, as the President.

When asked about the success of FSIP and his commitment to the business, Barry says, “I am a man of principle and of my word.

I believe that if you tell someone you are going to do something, you follow through with it.”

Under his guidance, FSIP has grown to become home to more than 120 employees with over 8,000 customers, a remanufacturing program that supports more than 8,500 part numbers and close relationships with some of the largest vehicle and control OEMs in the material handling and golf cart industries.

Creamer's Corner

Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you! Michael Creamer

As easy as it is today, cleaning the floors were as difficult and time consuming years ago. There are in today’s market, equipment that make sweeping and/or scrubbing that surface very quick indeed. Take the Advance Captor as a very good example. This machine is a combination sweeper/scrubber. This means that this equipment will not only sweep the surface of debris, but it lays down a cleaning solution onto the surface scrubbing and then squeegeeing up the dirty water. So, when it is all said and done, the surface is free from debris and dust.

Before operating such a machine, a checklist is always performed to ensure maximum performance. A pre-operational checklist would typically consist of the condition of all the cleaning components, such as the brushes.

Since the machine is a sweeper/scrubber, you will want to inspect the main brush, side brush and scrubbing brushes. Another obvious compartment is the hopper assembly. Empty the hopper if it has de-bris in it and also inspect the hopper filters. At the beginning or end of every cleaning you will want to clean these filters. Usually on most machines you can do this by removing the filters. After that, take the air hose and apply this to the filter removing the dust. In most cases, it is that easy to perform.

Another item many operators failed to check are the rubbers. For the Advance Captor sweeper/scrubber you will have two types to check. On the sweeping side of this machine, inspect the hopper skirts/rubbers and the main broom chamber skirts/rubbers. You are

looking for cuts, tears and general wear of these skirts. If the skirts are bad, generally your sweeping performance is lowered by allowing too much air into the chambers and loosing vacuum. It is along the same idea as a clogged vacuum cleaner. What happens? Nothing, because it doesn’t suck. The other side of this machine is the scrubber, so this machines also has squeegees. There is not really one more important squeegee over another, however if your inspection includes squeegees, you will want to definitely inspect the rear squeegees. Again, you are looking for cuts and tears that would warn you to replace.

Another very important check is the solution and recovery tanks. You will want to make sure your solution tank (clean water tank) is full and ready with the correct water to concentrate. The recovery tank (dirty water tank) should have been drained and rinsed out after the last scrubbing. If this was not performed, then you must now.

Since this machine has an internal combustion engine, it should be quite obvious that items on your checklist include examples such as: engine oil level, engine coolant level, etc.

So get this checklist completed and go sweep scrub. Remember, if you take care of your equipment, it will take care of you.

Creamer's Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear's Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber. Raymond receives highest honor from Toyota Industries Corporation

The Raymond Corpora-tion received the President’s Award, the highest honor, from Toyota Industries

Corporation (TICO) in recognition of Raymond’s exceptional achievements and contribution to Global Quality Improvement Activity for Raymond’s paint improvement project at its headquar-ters and manufacturing plant in Greene, New York. The activity was championed by Toyota Material Handling Group (TMHG) to ensure the four direct influencers of efficient manufacturing are optimized — man, material, machine and methods. After implementation, Ray-mond showed significant improvement in its paint process quality. “Raymond team members successfully embraced the new tools, and their collaboration was an integral part of the process,” says Michael Field, president and CEO of The Raymond Corporation. “This is a significant accomplishment for our team. We are honored to receive this prestigious award.” Raymond was 1 of 5 companies honored at the global manufacturing and quality ceremony held Oct. 27, 2015, at Toyota Industry Corporations Global Manufacturing Convention in Japan. www.raymondcorp.com

Safety Corner

AccountabilityBrian Colburn

From the time we were young most of us learned that we would be held accountable for our actions. As kids, if we stayed out too late or wrecked the car, we knew that we needed to do several things, such as confessing the mistake, asking for forgiveness and then living with the consequences of our actions. When things got damaged around our house, my parents insisted someone step forward and accept responsibility, and although I didn’t appreciate it at the time, I now appreciate it and expect the same out of my children.

What happens in today’s world when forklifts, buildings and products sustain many thousands of dollars in damage and no one is held accountable? The answer is that it becomes acceptable and the number of people causing unreported damage grows substantially. It is not uncommon to come across situations where an incident occurred, and rather than reporting it and dealing with the conse-quences, it was easier and less painful to just cover it up. For example, a forklift literally had the carriage and rotator attachment ripped off. The operator then tied the assembly up to allow it to be moved and anonymously dropped it off in front of the in-house forklift repair shop. The subsequent repairs cost many thousands of dollars and no one ever admitted to the incident, nor what situation might have caused it.

So what can be done about unreported damage? I would suggest attacking it in several steps.

ü Facilities need to let people know that reported damage will be treated much differently than unreported damage. A local distribution center told me that their punishment for damaging up to $10,000 USD worth of merchandise that was reported by the employee involved a written warning and refresher training, while damaging only $500 USD worth of materials and not reporting it resulted in immediate termina-tion of employment. They sent a clear message and the result was that people owned up to their mistakes and the situations that resulted in the damage were corrected. After implement-ing this policy they saw their damage drop dramatically and in turn profitability rose.

ü Track all damage. Many companies tell me about how many incidents they have, but few can pinpoint what these are costing their company. Depending on the situation, size of the company, type of product, etc. I have seen damage range from thousands to millions of dollars, especially when the products being handled are costly. If you don’t measure your damage then you won’t know how much money you are losing and you have no way to justify spending any money on correcting the situation.

ü Depending on how the implementations of suggestions one and two go, you may need to take it a step further. Many companies are implementing forklift management systems that accomplish things such as controlling authorized operator access, identifying who was driving when an impact occurred and assisting with pre shift inspections. These systems widely wildly in price and in features and no one is the perfect solu-tion for everyone so some research is required to find the right one for your wants and needs. Keep in mind that the system is just a means for collecting data and that how you manage your system, how you enforce your rules will be the key to success. If you need help identifying the right system for your needs give us call or send us an email.

In summary, companies need to expect employees to be honest about incidents, they need to treat them fairly when they do occur and get rid of people that can’t live by the rules.

Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A. (TMHU) has earned the presti-gious Most Valuable Supplier (MVS) Award for 2016. The MVS Award is granted by the industry’s trade association, MHEDA (Material Han-dling Equipment Distributors Association). The new award recognizes companies who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to their dealer network, their employees and their community. To qualify for the MVS Award, TMHU was required to meet a series of criteria in a number of areas important to the distributor companies who do busi-ness with them. In addition to confirming an on-going commitment to safety, MVS Award winners have demonstrated an overall commit-ment to business excellence by documenting programs in the following areas: industry advocacy, distributor advocacy, business networking, continuing education, and business best practices. “It’s an honor to be recognized for the way we do business every day,” said TMHU President Jeff Rufener. “As a company, we feel it’s important to support and give back to our dealers, our associates, the community we live and work in, and the material handling industry.” “MHEDA members represent the best of our industry; companies that take the initiative and make the investments to be not just good, but great at what they do,” said 2015 MHEDA President Mark Milovich of Lift Atlanta, Inc. “Recognition as a MHEDA MVS further demonstrates the member’s desire to shine above the brightest stars in all areas of running their business- both in-ternally and externally. Manual palletizer automatically raises and lowers loads

Presto Lifts P3 All-Around Spring Level Loader improves the efficiency of pallet loading and unloading opera-tion. A system of heavy-duty springs automatically lower or raise a pallet as weight is added or removed. By doing so, the P3 Spring Level Loader main-tains the top layer of boxes at an easy to access position. A turntable ring on top of the unit allows the user to rotate

the load so he or she can remain in the same position throughout the loading or unloading process eliminating the need to walk around the pallet. A compact base design allows workers unobstructed access to loads. All of the P3 Spring components fit within the diameter of the turntable ring, so the worker can stand up close to the unit at any position around the ring. The economical unit requires no power and is virtually maintenance-free. Fork pockets at the base allow for easy relocation. www.prestolifts.com

New App records crane operator experience – worker mobility enhanced

A new mobile app called SkillRe-cord makes it easy for skilled trades-people to log their work experience and share it with peers, mentors

and employers. In Canada, the BC Association for Crane Safety (BCACS) sponsored the rollout of the SkillRecord logbook app for over 10,000 crane operators. The logbook app is used by trainee and experienced crane operators, as co-founder Gunnar Mardon explained. “Our goal is to create a community of skilled professionals who track workplace activity and share information to promote con-tinued improvement of best practices - even after they are fully qual-ified,” said Mardon. An earlier web-based logbook has been in use by BCACS since 2011. The new app represents a natural progression, extending the logbook’s use to phones and other mobile devices. www.skillrecord.com

Rackart: The power of powder coatingEver heard of powder coating? Even

if you haven’t, you’ve probably used plenty of products that feature a powder coated finish. Everyday consumer goods such as automotive parts, lawn mowers, grills, garden tools, metal furniture, office furniture, pens, strollers, bikes, baseball bats, and vast number of other products utilize powder coat finishes. According to the Wikipedia definition, powder coating is “…a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder.” Powder coating differs from traditional liquid pain in that “…the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form.” In laymen’s terms, it’s a sort of spray-on dry paint. Once powder coat paint has been applied electrostatically, it gets heat-treated, or “baked on” in order for the paint to set and eventually form a hard finish.

How is all of this relevant to pallet rack? Well, it turns out the majority of pallet rack products feature a powder coating finish. Why is this? One of the reasons why powder coating finishes are so prominent among pallet rack products is the fact that powder coating is a particularly good choice for metal products, as the powder adheres well to the metal surface. Powder coating is also generally more durable than traditional liquid paint, a quality that is imperative in high-traffic, heavy-abuse warehouse and industrial settings. Not only is powder coating a durable paint option, but it’s heat-resistant as well, able to withstand temperatures of up to 130-150 degrees Fahrenheit. Hopefully, unless your

warehouse doubles as a sauna, you won’t need to put this attribute to the test. Still, considering the sometimes unpredictable conditions that are characteristic of fast-paced warehouse environments, the fact that powder coating offers a certain level of heat resistance provides some peace of mind.

Powder coating is a versatile paint finish option used on a variety of products in a wide array of industries. It’s durable and heat resistant, and looks great as well. You’re probably already a user of powder-coated products; if you own a bike, metal patio furniture, a car or garden tools, you can be almost sure of it. Maybe with your new knowledge of powder coating, you can even powder coat some items of your own.

If you want to know more about powder coating or other elements of pallet rack products, be sure to get in touch with us — our goal is to help!
